Do people even buy many books anymore?

by Anonymousreply 1February 26, 2018 3:29 AM

At least we know she can write her own words unlike another first lady...

by Anonymousreply 2February 26, 2018 3:32 AM

Any books I’m interested in I get from the library. This won’t be one of them.

by Anonymousreply 3February 26, 2018 3:32 AM

What you think?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 4February 26, 2018 3:33 AM

A lot of angry black women will buy it. And Oprah will plug the hell out of it.

by Anonymousreply 5February 26, 2018 3:35 AM

No ma'm

by Anonymousreply 6February 26, 2018 3:35 AM

I think it will sell well. People are so sick of Trump that reading about the Obamas will give the people a sense of hope.

by Anonymousreply 7February 26, 2018 3:35 AM

I want the inside scoop on the Obama's coping with the current nightmare. So, yes.

by Anonymousreply 8February 26, 2018 3:35 AM

I don't think it will really say anything. Most politician books do not.

by Anonymousreply 9February 26, 2018 3:39 AM

Yep, I like her. I enjoy reading so why wouldn't I go ahead and get this one, too?

by Anonymousreply 10February 26, 2018 3:39 AM

I don't care enough about any former president or first lady, enough to buy their books

by Anonymousreply 11February 26, 2018 3:40 AM

My book vil be hitting da shelves a week later. It culled "Becoming by Michelle Obama".

by Anonymousreply 12February 26, 2018 3:43 AM

It’s not a matter of whether it sells. It’s just a payoff for being such a good little housewife.

by Anonymousreply 13February 26, 2018 3:44 AM

We most definitely are...

by Anonymousreply 14February 26, 2018 3:45 AM

No.

I adore her husband though, and I will buy anything he sells.

by Anonymousreply 15February 26, 2018 3:48 AM

R14 those boys are cute, but what's with the wildebeest?

by Anonymousreply 16February 26, 2018 3:57 AM

They certainly bought that Wolf book.

by Anonymousreply 17February 26, 2018 4:08 AM

I'll buy it and read it.

by Anonymousreply 18February 26, 2018 4:36 AM

Sounds boring. She's obviously considering her own career in politics.

by Anonymousreply 19February 26, 2018 4:56 AM

I'm surprised it isn't a cookbook considering how popular her school lunches were with kids

R20 is an obese Republican who wants to cut off health care to obese people.

by Anonymousreply 21February 26, 2018 5:47 AM

I bet Mrs Obama will be honest and straightforward. And I bet she will talk in a way she could not in the White House about her ancestors, who were slaves and treated like dirt by white America.

by Anonymousreply 22February 26, 2018 5:49 AM

I have no interest in Michelle Obama. Or Barbara Bush or Rosalynn Carter for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 23February 26, 2018 5:55 AM

Glad Michelle is collecting a huge check. She deserves it after what America put her and her family through. And yes I'm absolutely buying her book and Baracks book too. The Obamas deserve all the money they can get they're hands on. They earned it.

by Anonymousreply 24February 26, 2018 5:56 AM

R22 Let me guess: black bi lesbian with a Glock, amirite?

by Anonymousreply 25February 26, 2018 5:59 AM

She’s releasing it a week after the midterms? I hope that means she spends the month before on a book tour in every district with a close race.

by Anonymousreply 26February 26, 2018 6:17 AM

I'll probably buy it, even tho I dont care much about 1st Ladies. Hell, Id buy the inevitable books by Sasha and Malia too. I'm thrilled to see the Obamas getting those coins; I KNOW it enrages the Orangutan In Chief and his equally illiterate spawn.

by Anonymousreply 27February 26, 2018 6:20 AM

She doesn't strike me as the type who'd write anything salacious or gossipy - now if somebody could get Melania to come clean about all she knows about her man (ewww Mel, how could you fall for 'that'?) Or even Babs Bush might let it rip, if her mind's still clear. But Michelle is too SJW-y.

by Anonymousreply 28February 26, 2018 7:07 AM

R28 and I like that about Mrs Obama. She always speaks the raw naked truth.

by Anonymousreply 29February 26, 2018 7:31 AM

r25, let me guess, white guy with a tiny penis, amirite?

by Anonymousreply 30February 26, 2018 7:48 AM

R29 = Naïve Millennial

by Anonymousreply 31February 26, 2018 7:52 AM

Will she discuss the trans rumors ???

by Anonymousreply 32February 26, 2018 8:01 AM

Is this a money laundering scheme? 30 million seems... excessive.

by Anonymousreply 33February 26, 2018 8:07 AM

R30 Nope.

by Anonymousreply 34February 26, 2018 8:16 AM

What r33 said. They probably won't gross more than 10% of that from sales of her book. This is simply a way to pay them off for having done such a good job. Their 1%er bosses are fulfilling their end of the contract. This is part of their payment for having done their jobs. Can't imagine what the under the table money is if Michelle publically being paid 30 million.

by Anonymousreply 35February 26, 2018 8:20 AM

The title is "Uppity Black Woman"

by Anonymousreply 36February 26, 2018 8:20 AM

President Obama was voted 8th best president, trump was voted worst president in history. That streamed him permanently.

by Anonymousreply 37February 26, 2018 8:34 AM

r37 you realize that the median age of the population of the US is mid 30's right? There's only been 6 presidents in that time span. They're voting on what they've read in history books about the rest.

by Anonymousreply 38February 26, 2018 8:39 AM

For R38, who thinks a cross section of Americans did the voting:

[quote]A panel of 170 presidential politics experts considers Trump the worst president in history, according to rankings published by the New York Times. Obama is 8th, with Lincoln, Washington and Franklin Roosevelt holding the top three spots. The same experts ranked Buchanan last and Obama 18th in 2014.

by Anonymousreply 39February 26, 2018 8:56 AM

R31 I am a millennial but I'm not naive by a long shot. Michelle grew up on the south side of Chicago. She's black and she's a woman. She knows exactly what inequality is all about. And what it looks like. And to be under valued as a human being and a woman. Which is why when she speaks I know she's coming from a real honest truthful place. Which would probably explain why she was more of a SJW first lady. She was speaking up for and giving a voice to people who were never given one by other former first ladies. Once again her background is what makes her real.

by Anonymousreply 40February 26, 2018 4:00 PM

Will it include a chapter on Weinstein? You know the guy she called "a wonderful human being, a good friend and just a powerhouse."

by Anonymousreply 41February 26, 2018 6:41 PM

[quote]Do people even buy many books anymore?

Yes they do. Michael Wolf's book just lit up the charts and sold more than 1.7mil copies in the first few weeks it was out.

There is a huge audience out there that is going to buy up a book by Michelle Obama, I'm not surprised she was offered such a large deal. The publisher knows they will make it back.

by Anonymousreply 42February 26, 2018 8:09 PM

I will definitely be buying it once it comes out in ebook format. J'adore Madam Obama.

by Anonymousreply 43February 26, 2018 8:10 PM

[quote]The publisher knows they will make it back.

God! Really?

by Anonymousreply 44February 26, 2018 8:19 PM

r41 wins!

by Anonymousreply 45February 26, 2018 8:43 PM

Don't know why she and Barack thought that idiots like Linda Sarsour and Beyonce were idols. Young people deserve better than an oversexed dumb singer and a vile Islamist.

by Anonymousreply 46February 26, 2018 8:59 PM

I won't buy it because I don't buy books but I'll certainly reserve a copy at the library and read with pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 47February 26, 2018 9:16 PM

I'm generally not interested in first ladies, and honestly not interested in the Obama legacy right now, not with so much at stake. I see too many of my fellow liberals getting nostalgic and losing the plot when the Obamas are brought up. They mean well but "why couldn't we have had Obama for a third term" sounds really off nowadays. So did Michelle's "Trump wants your kids to eat junk at school" message.

I mean, yeah, shit lunch is bad, but he also wants students to die in the hallways so his NRA pals can make a buck selling firearms. Let's prioritize.

In a few years I'll probably go back and revisit their books. Right now it's just too soon.

by Anonymousreply 48February 26, 2018 10:42 PM

I've never been a big fan of Michelle's. I felt she could have done much more with her influence. I also know things I probably shouldn't regarding her work back in Chicago. Nothing terrible but not impressive either.

Having said that I would give anything to have their sanity back in the WH. The book has an even chance of having some interesting parts. I wouldn't count on her feeling completely free to be completely honest. That is not happening. She and Barack are still young and not about to burn bridges.

by Anonymousreply 49February 26, 2018 10:53 PM

[quote]That is not happening. She and Barack are still young and not about to burn bridges.

$30 million bridges.

by Anonymousreply 50February 26, 2018 11:03 PM

And she will happily pocket that money, without giving away anything too juicy.

A couple of minor tidbits to ensure it will sell, but obviously nothing too revealing.

by Anonymousreply 51February 26, 2018 11:06 PM

My understanding is the Obamas received a combined deal for 65 million dollars. These are the memoirs of the first African-American President and First Lady. There is an excellent chance they will become classics and generate revenue for a very long time.

R20 - so your idea of good parenting is feeding children whatever they want?

by Anonymousreply 52February 26, 2018 11:06 PM

It's a crazy amount, but it will be earned back and them some. It's being published in 24 languages. Whether it's good and interesting is a different question than if it will sell. It will sell.

by Anonymousreply 53February 26, 2018 11:07 PM

Girl is getting ready to make a run for public office. <3

A senate seat for Illinois?

by Anonymousreply 54February 26, 2018 11:09 PM

Yes I will buy it, read it, and think about the words she writes. It would be worth buying if nothing else than to piss off the haters and liars who spout hate in her direction.

by Anonymousreply 55February 26, 2018 11:11 PM

The Obamas are as image conscious as any other political couple.

The book will be very polite and measured.

by Anonymousreply 56February 26, 2018 11:12 PM

Won't read hers. Will definitely read his.

by Anonymousreply 57February 26, 2018 11:13 PM

The should have wrote one book together. "Love on the Potomac" or something like that.

by Anonymousreply 58February 26, 2018 11:20 PM

Will she discuss her husbands 'special' friendship with Rahm Emanuel?

by Anonymousreply 59February 27, 2018 12:19 AM

[quote] Girl is getting ready to make a run for public office. <3 A senate seat for Illinois?

This is a highly unlikely scenario. She's just not interested. Michelle will head up some organization as a figurehead - possibly related to media or the industry. Or maybe a non-profit.

by Anonymousreply 60February 27, 2018 12:33 AM

I like her, but i doubt i'll read the book. First lady memoirs aren't particularly interesting historically and MO knows how to safeguard her inner most feelings.

by Anonymousreply 61February 27, 2018 12:34 AM

I'm glad to see that LBJ is pretty high on the list. His Presidency was hurt by the US involvement in the Vietnam war but he did many great things. His mistake was not dumping all of JFK's people after he took office. He relied on their advice and his own advisors would have done a better job for him.

JFK is still too high on the list.. He wasn't a very good President. His bungling of the Vienna Summit with Khrushchev led directly to the Soviets putting their missiles in Cuba. Yes, JFK handled the Missile Crisis, but the Missile Crisis would never have even existed if he had been a better President. It was awful that he was killed, and he still has plenty of acolytes around (Chris Matthews for one), but the more time that elapses after his death, the lower JFK will drop on these lists.

by Anonymousreply 62February 27, 2018 12:41 AM

What list are you referring to R62?

by Anonymousreply 63February 27, 2018 1:40 AM

Michelle is not running for office of any kind. And I don't blame her. But she was definitely much more active in her role as first lady then Laura Bush was. Michelle became something of a celebrity/pop culture figure. She also opened up the white house in a way it had never been opened before. She did things I've never seen other first ladies do. She was truly a modern first lady. When she did her first lady farewell interview with Oprah on CBS right before the new year came in. They showed a montage of her eight years as first lady. And Michelle really did go above and beyond as first lady. She put Laura Bush to shame. Not to take anything away from her. But Michelle truly executed her role as first lady. I look forward to seeing what she's going to do next. Along with Barack.

by Anonymousreply 64February 27, 2018 2:03 AM

[quote]Will it include a chapter on Weinstein? You know the guy she called "a wonderful human being, a good friend and just a powerhouse."

She's dedicating the book to him, R41.

by Anonymousreply 65February 27, 2018 2:30 AM

[quote]When she did her first lady farewell interview with Oprah on CBS right before the new year came in.

I actually would have liked her doing the interview with somebody else than Oprah, who's as cheap and unsophisticated as they come.

by Anonymousreply 66February 27, 2018 8:45 AM

R16

You just done disrespected one of the sisters of the church !

by Anonymousreply 67March 1, 2018 5:28 PM

Is I gonna turn up for the book signing ?

I'm buying it. It's something historic and I want it in my library. I curate my library so only "significant" hard cover books are placed there. I usually get most everything else form the library. When you live in an apartment with space limitations you make sacrifices. I used to have more than two thousand volumes I have Hillary & Bill's books too. I also intend to add to my Obama collection. I'm still waiting for the definitive book to come out on the 2016 election. If they don't include the media's role in delivering Trump I don't intend to waste my time.
