Why Was Barbra Streisand Never Considered Beautiful?

Before there was Giselle Bundchen, there was Barbra Steisand.

Streisand milked the ugly duckling thing for a decade, then wanted to be considered "cute." At the peak of her career in the 60s and 70s, she was never ever considered beautiful except by her biggest fans. I was a fan and thought she was attractive, but not pretty or beautiful in the slightest.

As far as the Jewish woman thing goes, OP, that's ridiculous. The great opera star Roberta Peters was an extremely pretty, bordering on beautiful, obvious Jewish woman. I met her several times because I went to school with her son Paul. Streisand looks like the "average Jewish woman" just like Woody Allen looks like the "average Jewish man" - like NO.

The famous photo of her profile is striking and she looks beautiful in it if you loosen conventions of beauty to allow for it—but you also have to acknowledge that the styling, makeup and lighting contribute a lot to the image.

She is not conventionally beautiful. But beauty conventions are restrictive and I would argue that yes, a lot of (particularly Ashkanazi) typical Jewish features are too large to be considered beautiful, by standard Western conventions, anyway.

But so what? A lot of classically beautiful people are also so beautiful that they practically whitewash themselves into unexceptional oblivion. I don’t know her, but Streisand seems like the type who desperately needs to be seen as exceptional, and she is exceptional looking.

Note that Evangeline Lily has more classically beautiful features and by almost anyone’s measure would be called “more beautiful” placed beside Streisand. But Streisand is memorable looking, and Lily is an unremarkable, unmemorable nice face to look at.

I think during the 60's and early 70's she was really lovely. Her looks began to coarsen a bit around the time Jon Peters came into her life and she got that awful afro.

It was Peter's movie, and he told Streisand as much at the beginning when she started "advising" him on how to direct her scenes. . She's ugly as far back as I can remember that is all the way back to I Can Get it For You Wholesale when she was 19 and I was 8 seeing the show with my mom and dad. I remember saying to them she's ugly. I've always thought so.

This thread has reminded me of all the celebrity plastic surgery pictures where the women's noses have uniformly been thinned to fit some new aesthetic standard. I'm not talking about actresses who had giant noses before the surgery. I'm talking about women who were conventionally attractive who decided to get a 'fashionable' thinner nose.

it's kind of creepy. it makes me wonder if Hollywood has incredibly rigid standards for facial features or if actresses are just so conformist and insecure that they would have a surgeon change their features when they are already beautiful.
