Debbie Gibson, 1988 Guiness Book of Records
Remember her? Youngest female to write, record and produce a #1 single?
Accomplished teen pop sensation who later became an actress.
Fast forward 30 years, and I was sad to hear that she's appeared on Dancing With the Stars and recording duets with Jordan Knight.
Poor lady. The pressure on her must have been intense.

She seems to have had a very stable life, so why "poor lady?"

My favorite Christmas song is her version of Sleigh Ride!

Shrewd negotiator too. I recall reading she made Playboy pay her full frontal money for just topless shots. Comparing to Op's picture I guess she had some work on her nose.

R1, I did this as a comparison post to the Debbie Thomas, 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics post and copied everything they wrote.

I thought he voice was good enough back in her peak in the late 80s and early 90s, but in more recent years, her voice is now shot and sounds terrible. Listen to her singing live and her re-recorded past hits on youtube. Here's a painful live performance "Foolish Beat".
Her main competition back then, Tiffany, voiced has held up much better and still sounds great. She was the better vocalist of the two back then also.

I bought all of Debbie Gibson's hit singles back in the day.
She was only 16 when she came out with her first big hit, Only In My Dreams.
Had two #1 hit singles, Lost In Your Eyes and Foolish Beat.
She didn't last long but left her mark.

R16 She looks a lot like current day Britney Spears in that pic. A little older, skinner and without Brit's dead eyes though.

There's actually a few Debbie Gibson songs that have deep house remixes and it works. I liked Gibson. A teen sensation, end of peak was early. She didn't take it all too seriously or freak out when she wasn't a big thing anymore.

Those pop hits from the 80s are all so awful. No one was shocked that they were made by a total amateur.
“Only in my dreams
As real at it may seem
It was only in my dreams!”
Not exactly Mozart.

We went to the same vocal coach (who's still in business 40 years later) in the 80s and I ran into her maybe around 2000...remembered me and we talked for a while and she's still apparently as down to earth as she's always been. Which I think you can tell in interviews.
She lied about her age by about two years however. They tried to push this prodigy music writing angle but I'm pretty sure she was 18.
But even what you hear is so seriously doctored... her voice really is pretty poor and when she would hit notes, it would shake. I'm really not sure how she got "discovered" but I remember being shocked when it did happen.
She was a big Billy Joel fan and used to play his songs on the piano (she was a good piano player I'll give her that). I think he was more or less her inspiration.

Tiffany Darwish's father was homeless, and basically hung out at a McDonald's in Hollywood all day. Apple didn't fall far from the tree- the dumb whore bought an expensive house in Santa Ana CA, which I'm sure she lost years ago.

Tiffany's career "could've been so beautiful" had she been given better material. 2 of her hits were covers and most of her original songs sucked.

Tiffany ventured out into motion pictures, while Debbie did Broadway. Debbie should have been nominated for a Tiny for her performance in Beauty and the Beast.
Tiffany came back years later with an album that was supposedly excellent, and made many top ten of the year lists.

Unfortunately I can't find a clip of it, but I vividly remember her going on Arsenio Hall to promote her Anything is Possible album. He held up the linked photo from the inner sleeve and asked something about going with a new adult image. She actually said "Yes, Debbie Gibson has a sexy image now. Anything is possible!"
My fifteenish year old self laughed laughed laughed and laughed.

Debbie and Tiffany had no rivalry, that was just something cooked up by the press.
They both capitalized on it in more recent years by touring together and starring in the craptastic movie Mega Python vs. Gatoroid where they have a hilarious catfight where at one point Debbie smeared a cream pie over Tiffany's big, fake tits.

R44 Martika was good. Toy Soldiers was a big hit for and I love More than you know also. She seemed to be forgotten compared to Deb and Tiff though.
The new wave of pop tarts that came around about a decade later - Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera (easily the best singer of the bunch), Mandy Moore (good enough as an actress though) and Jessica Simpson all left me cold. They were hyped even more though, and Spears in particular got very lucky that her career was hot for nearly a decade when she had next to no talent.

DG, ignore the bitter queens above. The last election was painful for them, and they are still self-medicating and lashing out at anyone with a pulse.
Take a look at the soul-destroying Janet and Madonna threads, and be thankful you are not in their shoes.

[quote] Back in the day I went to this meet and greet where this very popular 80’s singer carried on a running conversation with one of her handlers about a train she said she witnessed involving her arch rival. It was surreal. Each person would come up and get their photo taken or an autograph and the singer is going on and on with this XXX rated situation she had seen.
My question would have been what was Debbie doing at such a party herself to have seen Tiffany do this.
