Is he going to transition?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 19, 2018 10:25 PM |
After that K-Pop star killed himself in December, the last paragraph of this quote (about feeling that he is hated) from an interview since his win has me worried about Hanyu:
(The condition of your right ankle and your mental state during the 3 months before the Olympics) As for the current condition of my injuries, quite honestly, I do not know the details of the current status. I went through many substantive check-ups, but some parts of ligament had already been damaged, and the new injuries I caused [at the practice of NHK cup] were so complicated that the check-ups could not detect what were wrong. So many kinds of new pain came out. Therefore, it is not clear what is causing which pain and what kind of treatment would work best, at the moment. Well, perhaps, I should stop here…? (laughter)
In terms of my mental condition during the past 3 months, … well… what would you like me to say? (sore laughter) I don’t think there were moments when my own mental condition or my own mindset led myself into negative feeling. But the environment, the situation, the status, the condition, etc. all such external factors drew me into something extremely negative. I have devoted so many things [only] for my figure-skating; I have abandoned so many things. I think that I am fine as far as I have figure-skating only. Thus, there were moments when I wondered what I should do if I had to quit skating. In fact, it is not clear even now what will happen next under the current condition [of my ankle]. So, it’s a slightly complicating situation. Well, the press-conference should not ideally end with such a question, so…
As you know, my story is a kind of happy ending. Obviously, I am extremely happy that I can skate like this. There is the Olympic plaque; so many people have cheered me up. My real feeling is that I don’t want to be hated. The more people watch me and the more I speak, the more I am hated. (laugher) So many different things will be written [about me]. Probably, there will be many more articles including lies and untruth. Having said that, what I said and the history I have made, none of which will change. I think I was able to become an Olympic Champion with a good sense of pride with myself; I am able to feel proud of myself this time. So, I would like to complete my own life from now on, as an Olympic Gold Medallist. Thank you so much.

The Shibs are screwed.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 19, 2018 11:25 PM |
Free Dance practice going on right now. P/C seem in good spirits.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 19, 2018 11:25 PM |
Maia's at the boards bitching about something. Probably trying to rat out H/D for something.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 19, 2018 11:33 PM |
Donohue is kind of fat to be at this level, isn't he?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 20, 2018 12:01 AM |
Hey homos, try to remember every 4 minute Ice Dance program is a unique thing of beauty.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 20, 2018 12:05 AM |
NBCSN is breaking down the Short Dance. They are evaluating performances from last night but one, Charlie (big surprise) is up V/M ass trying to subtly / not so subtly say that P/C should have been given a lower placement because she was "clearly distracted" and that they shouldn't be rewarded just because they have more technical content. The other guy (Phil?) immediately said that V/M weren't deducted for some edge work when they should have been, and he had the replay to prove it, unfortunately they have angles judges don't.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 20, 2018 12:20 AM |
About the only advantage V/M have is that they skate last to an energetic program that builds to a finish. P/C have a disadvantage because they've got a low key program and there is another couple between them and V/M. It comes across as Prologue, Intermission, Main Event.
I have a feeling that the judges won't see it the way the audience does.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 20, 2018 12:32 AM |
Johnny is saying that P/C is still in it citing that P/C has beaten V/M by more than what they're behind right now.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 20, 2018 12:33 AM |
Oh look Belbin's pulled her V/M dildo out already.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 20, 2018 12:40 AM |
When they say "dep edging," does that mean when the skater is leaning?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 20, 2018 12:48 AM |
I'm bracing myself for a V/M win, and the avalanche of Canadian smugness that will befall us all when they do.
It tears my skating heart up to think of that histrionic and tacky team trumping the sublime artistry of the French.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 20, 2018 12:53 AM |
uh oh ... they just asked Johnny and Tara what other sport they would like to commentate on.... sounds like they're already planning to get rid of them for Adam and Ashley!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 20, 2018 12:54 AM |
Tara and Johnny obviously hate V/M.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 20, 2018 12:55 AM |
V/M profile... just makes me hate them even more. They really are so fake and smug all at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 20, 2018 12:58 AM |
So who does the Judging Panel favor?
CAN obviously V/M...but the others? JPN always seems to fall in line with the Canadians.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 20, 2018 1:02 AM |
I don't think Moonlight Sonata is what you call "low-key"--it's a warhorse for a reason. Moulin Rouge with Kidman's and McEwan's thin little vocals is going to seem weirdly flat *if* P/C do their thing right. V/M should have picked Turandot if they were going to go with generic skating music.
Charlie isn't always up V/M's ass--but he's a very technical skater and V/M do have a technical edge over P/C. They and Canada will be insufferable, but I suppose Charlie can always quietly remind people that he and Meryl beat them over and over . . .
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 20, 2018 1:05 AM |
Oh yeah do we know the final panel?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 20, 2018 1:05 AM |
Adam Rippon flirting with Liam McHugh from NBC Cable was something to see.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 20, 2018 1:12 AM |
V/M act like it's an inconvenience that they even have to skate instead of just being handed the medal like they "deserve"
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 20, 2018 1:22 AM |
Adam might have been able to turn Liam. He must rival Blanche Devereaux on the jungle gym for flexibility and endurance.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 20, 2018 1:27 AM |
It sucks that Tennel has to go first yet again but I'm assuming its not as bad as it was under the old scoring system when judges "saved" their marks for later competitors.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 20, 2018 1:30 AM |
I don't blame Adam for trying. Liam is a cutie.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 20, 2018 1:37 AM |
Bradie has no chance for a medal anyway so skating first or last doesn't really matter.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 20, 2018 1:49 AM |
Long program = Long dress?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 20, 2018 1:54 AM |
Adam Rippon did not seem like he was into being set up with Sally Fields son. On the today show when asked about it he said "yeah I know" but not in a happy way. The guy is cute and talks like 50 purses fell out of his mouth just like Adam.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 20, 2018 2:10 AM |

Love how Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence Programs never have anything to do with the plot of the movie. Meanwhile, Schindler’s List programs always get such literal interpretations.
Personally I would love to see Yuzu and Javi do an exhibition to MCML.

The fake Russkies seem so confused
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 20, 2018 2:25 AM |
Hanyu's "Hope and Legacy" long program had a similar sounding flavor to MCML.
Its composer, Joe Hisaishi, obviously takes inspiration from Ryuichi Sakamoto. Until I researched otherwise, I thought MCML was composed by Joe Hisaishi.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 20, 2018 2:27 AM |
I like Sara and Kirill together, but this Don Quixote program is so uninspired and stale. Give them something young and cool and fresh for god's sake.

The James Bond program is so much better than that Perry Mason FD. The retro style works for them, but there was something about that one that fell totally flat. Happy to see them doing better now.

Carol Lane on Piper’s new dress: “I told Paul, ‘Don’t worry, nobody’s going to be looking at you.’”

They got silver in 1998, behind the infamous Pasha Grishuk (they stumbled in the Free Skate, but she still burst into tears when the program was over because she knew gold was preordained). That was also the year Bourne/Kraatz got mysteriously marked down in one of the compulsory dances so that, despite finishing third in the free skate, they would still be 4th overall.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 20, 2018 3:39 AM |
I'm watching hockey on one screen and ice dancing on the other. As I sit here on my couch critiquing shit, I'm reminded that these folks are dancing and playing soccer on ice. How in the actual fuck can people do these things and I can't walk from my couch to my room without tripping on the throw rug and turning a corner without hitting the wall.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | February 20, 2018 3:39 AM |
Sochi left a bad taste in V/M/s mouths because basically they felt they should have won because NO ONE could skate better than them. I guess Skate Canada didn't pay off enough judges.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | February 20, 2018 3:39 AM |
There is way too much Shib hate. They're obviously smart, work hard, and are cute as hell.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | February 20, 2018 3:40 AM |
Belbin's Canadian is showing, and has been the last 24 hours. This will depend on the technical specialists--if they hold up V/M's levels, they probably win.
Hubbell/Donohue are probably locks for bronze unless they fuck up again (like last year at Worlds).

by Anonymous | reply 91 | February 20, 2018 3:41 AM |
Crazy as it sounds, the Russians could also vault to bronze with help. They were given very high PCS scores, and level 4s on all but one element. They are being set up for 3rd if there's a mistake.

If she were American, I guarantee they would have had her fix her nose. I almost admire her for her "take me as I am" spirit.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | February 20, 2018 4:03 AM |
So that's a higher score, but I don't know enough about the event to tell how that was better than the Shib sibs.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | February 20, 2018 4:03 AM |
"They're on par with V/M who are the BEST technicians EVER."
by Anonymous | reply 144 | February 20, 2018 4:03 AM |
I desperately want P/C to win. This Moonlight Sonata program is stunning. And I want her to win after the wardrobe malfunction. And I am sick of V/M.
But there were errors at the beginning of that skate.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | February 20, 2018 4:03 AM |
God the Italian guy is so fucking hot.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | February 20, 2018 4:03 AM |
P/C were mesmerizing. That was stunningly beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | February 20, 2018 4:03 AM |
R134 yeah... Im not talking about what they do on ice. Do you see the shit they do on Social Media?
by Anonymous | reply 148 | February 20, 2018 4:04 AM |
i love the long legs and arms the men have...such fab extension
but the asians do not seem to have that....
by Anonymous | reply 149 | February 20, 2018 4:04 AM |
I guess cause they did more lifts than the siiblings?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 20, 2018 4:04 AM |
I so prefer P/C to V/M
by Anonymous | reply 151 | February 20, 2018 4:04 AM |
I thought that was beautiful too, what I love about ice dancing.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | February 20, 2018 4:04 AM |
Canadian channel doesn't have as many commercials - world record score.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | February 20, 2018 4:04 AM |
That was a beautiful program.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | February 20, 2018 4:05 AM |
I've never watched ice dancing before this Olympics. P/C really rock that arty/spooky/ethereal vibe -- that was stunning.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | February 20, 2018 4:05 AM |
Sacre bleu!
by Anonymous | reply 156 | February 20, 2018 4:05 AM |
Yep, as technically great as they are, the Asians(in all disciplines) don't have the look of elegance you see in the taller long limbed men.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | February 20, 2018 4:06 AM |
What's this now?
by Anonymous | reply 158 | February 20, 2018 4:06 AM |
I prefer P/C to V/M 2018. I did enjoy V/M in 2010 (even though I dislike them, i loved their program and skating that season).
by Anonymous | reply 159 | February 20, 2018 4:06 AM |
I know all of these pairs aren't lovers or anything. But, even so, they can play with adult romanticism and soft eroticism. Do you think that holds back the Shibs since their siblings and if they even play with that it's weird. Or, is that simply not a factor?
by Anonymous | reply 160 | February 20, 2018 4:06 AM |
This is a fantastic program!
Talk about slow-burn.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | February 20, 2018 4:06 AM |
Come on H/D!!!
by Anonymous | reply 162 | February 20, 2018 4:07 AM |
I loved P/C's free skate in 2016, but this is truly iconic stuff, too.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | February 20, 2018 4:07 AM |
I wonder what is her affinity for the beige skates about? She is the only one wearing the...including the pairs.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | February 20, 2018 4:07 AM |
Those H/D twizzles were definitely not great.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | February 20, 2018 4:08 AM |
Wow. I love ice dance.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | February 20, 2018 4:08 AM |
P/C are so stunning to me because of their speed. The grace, long limbs and emotion too but they are really moving.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | February 20, 2018 4:08 AM |
Did P/C get their idea for this FS from Gordeava and Grinkov in 1994?
by Anonymous | reply 168 | February 20, 2018 4:09 AM |
This Silk Stalkings music is, I'm not sure.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | February 20, 2018 4:09 AM |
R148, why should I? I just watch FS and comment during competitions.
If social media were already invented during Pasha Grishchuk's time, you betcha nobody will be checking the Shibs twitters.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | February 20, 2018 4:10 AM |
H/D are definitely not as good as the Shibs tonight. Not close.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | February 20, 2018 4:10 AM |
Grinkov is the one who dies right?
by Anonymous | reply 172 | February 20, 2018 4:10 AM |
Is it me or is the USA bombing in this olympics?
by Anonymous | reply 173 | February 20, 2018 4:10 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 174 | February 20, 2018 4:11 AM |
R170 no one is saying you should . The topic was about WHY people hate them. And the point was if you saw a lot of the shit they did (on Social Media) you'd get a better idea.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | February 20, 2018 4:11 AM |

You missed that I didn't comment on that topic. I commented on the other which comes up about them - that they're a brother-sister duo

Carol Lane and the other CBC commentators are so annoying.

The Shibs medal!
by Anonymous | reply 190 | February 20, 2018 4:14 AM |
I hate this arrangement.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | February 20, 2018 4:15 AM |
Yeah, R182 you said you didnt get the general ick about them because of brother / siter teams have been around... And I said.. if you saw the shit they do on social media you'd get a better understanding. They give off incestuous vibes in their constant vlogging. That's all.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | February 20, 2018 4:15 AM |
H/D blew it !!
Damn, they do smolder so well.
Even she said "fuck" at the end.

by Anonymous | reply 198 | February 20, 2018 4:18 AM |
V/M have done much better programs with higher difficulty.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | February 20, 2018 4:18 AM |
Belbin why lie and say you can't choose? You've already got a V/M dildo up your ass.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | February 20, 2018 4:18 AM |
Yes, they were.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | February 20, 2018 4:18 AM |
Definitely prefer the canadians!
by Anonymous | reply 202 | February 20, 2018 4:19 AM |
I think the French were slightly better, but I can't argue if they give it to V/M
by Anonymous | reply 203 | February 20, 2018 4:19 AM |
Tacky and underwhelming.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | February 20, 2018 4:19 AM |
What did the Shib's do on social media that is so bad?
by Anonymous | reply 205 | February 20, 2018 4:19 AM |
I don't think anybody has answered... how do V/M and P/C get along?
by Anonymous | reply 206 | February 20, 2018 4:19 AM |
God, I just want to see Scott's face fall in complete disappointment.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | February 20, 2018 4:20 AM |
Tessa’s nosejob has aged very poorly over the years.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | February 20, 2018 4:20 AM |
That was exciting. The French were fucking boring!
by Anonymous | reply 209 | February 20, 2018 4:20 AM |
I prefer the French but that was a great skate. Was Scott singing? Or talking to Tessa? I found that very distracting.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | February 20, 2018 4:20 AM |
Classic shot of an unimpressed P/C on the sidelines.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | February 20, 2018 4:20 AM |
They act so freaking phony.
by Anonymous | reply 212 | February 20, 2018 4:20 AM |
Belbin really loves them. I know that's been said a lot, but she's actually wet talking about them.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | February 20, 2018 4:20 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 214 | February 20, 2018 4:21 AM |
Bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | February 20, 2018 4:21 AM |
I don't mind if they win. It's their last skate after all.
by Anonymous | reply 216 | February 20, 2018 4:21 AM |
Second in the free but overall OGM for Tessa's frozen forehead! Oh, Canada!
by Anonymous | reply 217 | February 20, 2018 4:21 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 218 | February 20, 2018 4:21 AM |

HA HA!!!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 220 | February 20, 2018 4:22 AM |
Well, everyone backstage knows the Canadian $$$ that went into this win, from the moment they declared they were coming back. Ask Weaver and Poje what happens when the Canadian cash stops flowing.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | February 20, 2018 4:22 AM |
Yuck. French were robbed.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | February 20, 2018 4:22 AM |
P/C lost by less than point! Damn costume!
by Anonymous | reply 223 | February 20, 2018 4:22 AM |
P/C would have won if they had skated the Team event!
by Anonymous | reply 224 | February 20, 2018 4:23 AM |
Highway robbery
by Anonymous | reply 225 | February 20, 2018 4:23 AM |

yay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
scott got gold !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 227 | February 20, 2018 4:23 AM |
I thought the siblings did better than the French. Them getting silver was more than enough. Love the Canadian pair!
by Anonymous | reply 228 | February 20, 2018 4:24 AM |
If P/C hadn't fucked up in the short, they'd have the gold.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | February 20, 2018 4:24 AM |
Fuck this shit, honestly.
Argh...Moulin Rogue wins over Beethoven. My god.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | February 20, 2018 4:24 AM |
^Or the judges would have increased the Canadians' scores to whatever they needed anyway.
Do we know who the judges were?
by Anonymous | reply 231 | February 20, 2018 4:24 AM |
The Shibs routine was cute and fun. The French were elegant but boring. I felt that the Canadians really interpreted the music well, and I thought he was singing to her also.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | February 20, 2018 4:25 AM |
You know, why were V/M bitter after Sochi. They were the better team in Vancouver and they were the second best team in Sochi. They got in line. So sick of hearing about their unfounded "bitterness."
by Anonymous | reply 234 | February 20, 2018 4:25 AM |
Why all the incest hate? Love is love is love? No?
by Anonymous | reply 235 | February 20, 2018 4:25 AM |
Coulda, shoulda, woulda...
by Anonymous | reply 236 | February 20, 2018 4:25 AM |
Okay, Scott Virtue is beyond annoying. That said, again, I preferred the French, but I don't find it wrong that V/M won. He reminds me of "Duncan" from the Seinfeld "The Race" episode.
by Anonymous | reply 237 | February 20, 2018 4:25 AM |
The French skated so elegantly. Disappointed in the final outcome ...
by Anonymous | reply 238 | February 20, 2018 4:25 AM |
Wow you queenfaces sure do get in a dither about freaking faggy ice dancing! LOL LOL
by Anonymous | reply 239 | February 20, 2018 4:26 AM |
R230 Classical music is way too stuffy and expected for something like figure skating! That Moulin rouge medley was fun and dramatic!
by Anonymous | reply 241 | February 20, 2018 4:26 AM |
Ah, showing now past V/M wins. She was so much lighter then and Scott didn't have to make those pained faces during the lifts.
Their Umbrellas of Cherbourg was one of the all time best dances.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | February 20, 2018 4:26 AM |
DL skating fans worst nightmare......V/M win gold, and the Shibs on the podium.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | February 20, 2018 4:27 AM |
Skate Canada got their money's worth this time!

R248 everyone hires bots now. Margot Robbie did. Seriously.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | February 20, 2018 4:30 AM |
Virtue & Moir are now in the history books winning the most Olympic medals, 5 in total, 3 Gold 2 Silver
by Anonymous | reply 252 | February 20, 2018 4:30 AM |
Scott could poke somebody's eye out with that nose.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | February 20, 2018 4:31 AM |
Absolutely sickening! Everything I said about Canada rigging this is SPOT ON! The French were SO CLEARLY BETTER, yet somehow, SOMEHOW fucking Virtue and Moir were able to get just ONE POINT MORE for the win! Another thing I notice, is that they're always so cocky and full of themselves, because it's almost like they KNOW the fix is in and all they have to do is just not make a huge mistake and they'll win! I think the French knew it too and it was reflected in their faces just now backstage. I also still wouldn't put it past the Canadians to have sabotaged Gabriella's costume for the short. That is how sick they are and how they'll do anything to win. I would absolutely LOVE to see V/M's gold medal stripped from them and given to the French once the pay-off's are exposed.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | February 20, 2018 4:31 AM |

I couldn't take my eyes off Tessa, and it finally struck me she looks like a beautiful Katy Perry. That routine was sublime!
by Anonymous | reply 256 | February 20, 2018 4:32 AM |
There should be an asterisk about their 5 medals considering Team titles weren't a gift other skaters were previously afforded.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | February 20, 2018 4:32 AM |
Hey, guys, quick, did you hear that Virtue & Moir are a record holder now?
Scott is also handsome, gays.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | February 20, 2018 4:32 AM |
Shouldn't you be out there on the ledge somewhere, R254? Screaming at passers by, I assume?
by Anonymous | reply 259 | February 20, 2018 4:33 AM |
Cizeron is some pissed!
by Anonymous | reply 260 | February 20, 2018 4:33 AM |
R254 V/M actually lost the free dance to the French, But because the French had that accident with the costume they were behnd V/M after the short. If they won the short, the french would have won the Gold
by Anonymous | reply 261 | February 20, 2018 4:33 AM |
The only good thing about this is that those smug assholes will go away now.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | February 20, 2018 4:33 AM |
The Canadians only hold a record because a new event was added.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | February 20, 2018 4:34 AM |
R254 I know you are joking, but that is the oldest trick in the book in the beauty pageant world. Cutting straps and hiding shoes...happens all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 264 | February 20, 2018 4:34 AM |
Guys, remember: if you don't think that the record holding Virtue & Moir aren't the greatest ever, including tonight, you are delusional or something.
by Anonymous | reply 265 | February 20, 2018 4:34 AM |

R262..hopefully they'll take the incest twins with them.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | February 20, 2018 4:35 AM |
Scott is considered hot?
It's easy to have the most medals when you keep adding events like the just-for-more-ad-money team event.
That said, I think they skated well and deserve gold.
by Anonymous | reply 268 | February 20, 2018 4:35 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 271 | February 20, 2018 4:35 AM |
I don't see how V/M have passed Torvill and Dean. They skated so long together, she looked near 50 in their final Olympics.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | February 20, 2018 4:36 AM |
Even if you take away the team events, V/M would have three medals. Two gold, one Silver. Which would still put them among the most medals won. Not at the top of the list, but very close up.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | February 20, 2018 4:36 AM |
Wtf is up with the stuffed animals instead of medals?
by Anonymous | reply 274 | February 20, 2018 4:37 AM |
Torvill and Dean got fucked by different judges in '94.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | February 20, 2018 4:37 AM |
No. It's stuffed animals instead of flowers.
by Anonymous | reply 276 | February 20, 2018 4:38 AM |
R261, I know this! But don't you think it's a little odd that all of a sudden, after her wearing the exact same costume this whole season it would suddenly fall apart at the most important moment? Honestly, this type of sabotage has been done before. And I wouldn't have put it past one of the Canadians to do it, KNOWING Virtue and Moir could NEVER have won another gold on their own merits. Also, Virtue and Moir were NEVER scored so high for doing that exact same program. But it's like the judges already "knew the score," to add JUST the right amount to push them over the top. Even though the French had a record breaking score. Something doesn't add up-- literally.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | February 20, 2018 4:38 AM |
Medal ceremony comes later.
by Anonymous | reply 278 | February 20, 2018 4:38 AM |
The french had the same problem tonight that Nathan Chen had in the mens events, You don't win the event in the short, but you can certainly lose it.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | February 20, 2018 4:38 AM |
Now the creepy V/M shippers will write even more fanfics.

Charlie and Meryl (even if she looks like an alien) are still my all time favorites.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | February 20, 2018 4:39 AM |
R277 after Tonya Harding all skaters sign a 'code of conduct' so it is doubtful anyone would tamper with the costume.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | February 20, 2018 4:40 AM |
R277 All you have to do is snip ONE thread. The stress on the strap will break if even one stich is missing.
I swear I have not done this. But many have.
by Anonymous | reply 284 | February 20, 2018 4:40 AM |
R283 signing a code of conduct only matters if you get caught. Just saying!
by Anonymous | reply 285 | February 20, 2018 4:42 AM |
Can't believe this podium has two of the most overrated, hammy and unsubtle dance teams in history on the podium. Bunch of over-acting masked as good artistry.
Well, guess it's clear...big and loud wins.
Fuck depth, fuck nuance, fuck poetic movement....let's just do some crazy acrobatic shit and orgasm faces timed to giant crescendos.
by Anonymous | reply 286 | February 20, 2018 4:42 AM |
R282, mine too! I'm stunned they were allowed to beat the precious Virtue & Moir. I guess they realized they couldn't win another gold fair and square from that Olympics, hence the costume tampering at this one.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | February 20, 2018 4:42 AM |
Did Gabrielle's strap just magically come off though? I thought Cizeron accidentally unhooked it?
by Anonymous | reply 288 | February 20, 2018 4:43 AM |
was it the costumers fault who sewed it on?
or who?
by Anonymous | reply 289 | February 20, 2018 4:43 AM |
R288, it was no accident! That was revealed when they said someone was trying to sew it up backstage beforehand!!! All the more proof it was tampered with. Probably by Tessa. I swear that woman looks like such an evil bitch!!
by Anonymous | reply 290 | February 20, 2018 4:44 AM |
It was Justin Timberlake!
by Anonymous | reply 291 | February 20, 2018 4:44 AM |
Oh wait.. I remember now. She was having problems with it all of a sudden popping off and then someone sewed it back on and it still fell off. Do they share the same costume people as V/M?
by Anonymous | reply 292 | February 20, 2018 4:44 AM |
in slo mo tho u could see his hand passin over it and possibly unhookin it by accident
by Anonymous | reply 293 | February 20, 2018 4:45 AM |
The thing is though so realistically.. V/M won by a technicality.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | February 20, 2018 4:45 AM |
R293, but they said someone was trying to sew it up BEFORE that happened, hence the tampering.

I prefer the old school innovators of ice dance like Klimova/Ponomarenko, etc. Not this trashy lowest-common-denominator pandering. P/C are on the level of the greatest from yesteryear...time for their era now. Bye V/M, don't let the door hit ya...
by Anonymous | reply 296 | February 20, 2018 4:46 AM |
Costumes also need to be made with the understanding that they are for athletic competitions. Papadakis’ dress was held up by one strap around her neck. It was gorgeous, but it clearly wasn’t strong enough to hold up to the twizzles and lifts required in ice dancing.
So they only have themselves to blame
by Anonymous | reply 297 | February 20, 2018 4:46 AM |
R298, I'm still putting the blame squarely on Tessa where it belongs, thanks! LOL
by Anonymous | reply 298 | February 20, 2018 4:47 AM |
In addition skaters are responsible to bring a 'back-up' costume just in case something happens to the first one, The french team did not do that
by Anonymous | reply 299 | February 20, 2018 4:47 AM |
R257- It's true that skaters back in the day didn't have the team event, but if you watch their skating, it's not like they really had they had any kind of real skating skills. Henie basically did nothing but a few spins and hops around the ice. So the competition for medals these days is a lot harder and therefore a lot harder to get a medal.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | February 20, 2018 4:47 AM |
Canada dominates. As it should be. All is well in the skating world. The end.

Thanks for bringing them up. I was just typing that can you imagine how many medals they would have if the Team competition was gifted to them back in the day?
by Anonymous | reply 302 | February 20, 2018 4:48 AM |
And regardless of the costume "mishap" (aka tampering!), they had the highest program score EVER in the long. Therefore, if they were actually judging this FAIRLY, they still would have beat the Canadians by a point or so.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | February 20, 2018 4:49 AM |
[quote]but if you watch their skating, it's not like they really had they had any kind of real skating skills.
Klimova/Ponomarenko would make V/M look like roller skating novices.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | February 20, 2018 4:49 AM |
Exactly R300 back in the days of Henie and Grafston 60% of the mark was on figures, 40% was on freestyle. So the competition was based on who could do figure 8s the best
by Anonymous | reply 306 | February 20, 2018 4:50 AM |
It's also hard to downplay the importance of skating order. Had V/M skated before P/C things might have turned out differently

by Anonymous | reply 308 | February 20, 2018 4:50 AM |
R303 again you don't win the event in the short, but you can lose it.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | February 20, 2018 4:51 AM |
I told you guys. The French should have done the team competition as a dry run. They only have themselves to blame for any mishaps.

Doubtful. K/P were under the old system. V/M were legitimately innovators under the new.

by Anonymous | reply 314 | February 20, 2018 4:53 AM |
I was thinking the same thing [R307] I think the skating order is a huge factor when the team's are so closely matched. PC definitely had two unfortunate hurdles (costume and skate order) that cost them the gold. Otherwise I think they would have squeaked by for the win.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | February 20, 2018 4:56 AM |
P/C remind me of an amazing ice dancing performance I saw years ago to Ravel’s Bolero. Not Torvill and Dean. I want to say the pair were Russian but I could be wrong. Def not American. Does anyone know what I’m thinking of. Can’t find it on YouTube.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | February 20, 2018 4:56 AM |
This was one exiting final, especially because the audience, unlike Sochi, were really loud. P/C and H/D were flat when it counted.
Scott Moir can fucking get it. Did you guys see that intensity at the end? Fuck, all the testosterone you just know he fuck really hard. I bet he would fuck Guillaume Cizeron if he was given the opportunity tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 317 | February 20, 2018 4:57 AM |
The judges had left plenty of room for P/C to get higher scores no matter what the skate order. P/C just weren't sharp enough technically because it looks like they got good artistic scores.
by Anonymous | reply 318 | February 20, 2018 4:59 AM |
skating order is the luck of the draw, each team has to pull a number out of a hat

How do they determine who draws first?!
by Anonymous | reply 321 | February 20, 2018 5:01 AM |
The wardrobe problem really didn't affect P/C's composition score - their lift and twizzle problems weren't given a deduction at all so P/C had plenty of room to win tonight. They'll do better for the next Olympics and hopefully get a better costume.
by Anonymous | reply 322 | February 20, 2018 5:02 AM |
R321 it is done by the order of the placement after the short.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | February 20, 2018 5:03 AM |
The wardrobe issue totally affected the skater's confidence and concentration throughout her routine. A huge issue even though she didn't let it stop her. And whoever skates last gets a slight edge if they skate an equally compelling routine as someone who skated before them. The gold and silver medals could have been easily switched if those two factors (costume and skate order) hadn't happened. Either team deserved the gold IMO and V/M didn't have as many deterrents.
by Anonymous | reply 324 | February 20, 2018 5:15 AM |
So V/M got to draw first?
by Anonymous | reply 325 | February 20, 2018 5:18 AM |
Here's the medal count in figure skating not counting this year: U.S., 48; Canada, 25, Russia/Unified Team/Ukraine/etc., 56. Even though the Russians didn't win their first medal until the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, they had so many years where they multiple couples on the podium for pairs and ice dancing.
Yes, V/M are good, and it pains me to admit it because I find them smug, but I don't think their artistry compares with T/D or Klimova/Ponomarenko (Bestmianova and Bukin were "garish" and "frenetic," as I think Peggy Fleming once perfectly described them).

Well, at least V/M should stay retired this time. P/C were likely to stick around for another quad no matter yet. Expect that there will continue to be a glut up at the top of the American podium.
Poor H/D and C/B. I can't fault the judging, per se, but it's a shame that a stupid costume problem and a stumble determined the medals.
Can we encourage the Shibs to retire?
by Anonymous | reply 333 | February 20, 2018 5:45 AM |
Lol enjoying the wailing and hysteria. Not so much the Canadian troll.
The Canadian announcer was totally calling it for the French... she said something's like...I hate to bring you back to earth but VM would need higher than they've ever scored to win. Then Kurt was like oh well they'll be happy whatever color the metal.
Also the shibs were clearly the best American term this competition so I'm enjoying those tears too even so I wasn't that invested in them particularly.
Scott is not classically handsome but I have to admit that I like the look of his arms in the stockings. I also used to like that he would hang all over Charlie White back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | February 20, 2018 5:50 AM |
R334...it still can be as P/C have shown.
But judges nowadays don't care. They want Michael Bay skating--big, loud, explosive and dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | February 20, 2018 5:54 AM |
Ice dancing could be the last hope for any artistry in skating. They should reward the artistic skaters more than the circus performers.

LOL, love the bitter bitches here seething here over V/M win. They won despite really biased pro-P/C judging. In the short they should have been further ahead. In the free, it's a toss up, but they had a really P/C friendly judging panel as well.
by Anonymous | reply 338 | February 20, 2018 6:10 AM |
Apparently R226 et al. have collective amnesia that Tessa and Scott won their first OGM with Mahler. It was a fantastic lyrical program, while it was Davis/White who were "big explosive" with the Phantom.
A little bit of perspective.

Please, that hot mess of a program should not have gotten that close to P/C's Moonlight Sonata on PCS. I'll give V/M skating skills, but they should not have gotten 10s on composition and interpretation.
But, in a way it makes sense I guess...we are living in the Trump era, so no wonder creative innovation, artistic subtlety and poetic nuance gets trumped by hammy tricks, flailing arms, hammy orgasm faces and easily consumable motifs.
Fuck it...they have their stupid gold medal. Now just go away and never come back.

R341, you just seethe and stay bitter. I think V/M skated this program the best they have all season, and it definitely deserved the 10s. You may not like it or find it tacky, but they know how to perform.
As for PCS, if anyone's PCS are a joke it's P/C in SD. Ridiculous they were the highest for a flawed performance.
And I'm not leaving. You'll just have to deal. Toodles!

Well, at least there won't be any complaint about Canadian fans from this point on for the next few years. V/M retire, D/R retire, Chan retires and Osmond/Daleman will be lucky to get top 10. There's no one behind any of these skaters that will be in the hunt for a medal in the near future so no more fan wars.

R355, Hubbell and Donohue actually dated for years. So, yes, they have chemistry. You VM-stans are so insecure. I wish Virtue/Moir did have chemistry--or acting chops, either would do--I'd have an easier time watching them.

Is this the new "he dated women, he isn't gay"?
Who cares if they dated or not, on the ice H/D have no detectable chemistry. They're the most boring dance pair in the top echelon, and yes, even more boring than the Shibs.
Cizeron is like a ballet dancer on the ice, his lines and movement are hard to match. Without him, there's no pair. Gabi is a meh skater.
by Anonymous | reply 362 | February 20, 2018 7:38 AM |
P/C have had trouble with their SD before - that's what they needed to work on. Knowing that was their weakest spot, they should have done everything to make sure every detail - including costume- was secure.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | February 20, 2018 7:41 AM |
Have you seen them live R362? I have and there's a ton of chemistry. I don't even care that much if there is chemistry or not (I liked Davis/White who give off little if any sexual vibe), but Hubbell/Donohue have it. Probably helps that they haven't been skating together since they were little kids, though that would help with their consistency.
Damn, I do love the petulance and insecurity of Virtue/Moir fans. Sore losers, sore winners . . .

Shockingly for you, I'm not a fan of the V/M comeback or the MR program.
But P/C didn't offer anything new with MS either that they didn't do much better in 2016 with To Build a Home. That one was a magical program comparable to V/M's Mahler in 2010.
by Anonymous | reply 366 | February 20, 2018 8:10 AM |
I just realized the Anti-shibutani troll (aka the Shibot) is also the unhinged anti-V/M troll.
Anyways V/M were phenomenal tonight. I called it at the beginning of the season, P/C don't have strong programs, especially their Free dance which happens to be very one note. They also don't skate facing each other that much in the free dance which makes their program much easier.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | February 20, 2018 8:19 AM |
To compare P/C's 2016 FD with that overrated Mahler program is blasphemy.
To Build a Home was so layered in its artistic composition and interpretation....V/M's Mahler was two kids making lovey eyes at each other and playing kissy face for 4 minutes.
God, so fucking sad people think these teams are on par artistically.
[quote]I just realized the Anti-shibutani troll (aka the Shibot) is also the unhinged anti-V/M troll.
Yeah, and like you're not the Canadian cunt who's been polluting this thread and DL with all those posts about wanting Scott Moir's dick.

R368, is completely unhinged and raving.
In any case, P/C have been winning the free dance during the season, and they won it here too. The judges were business as usual but the inflation of scores got out of control.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | February 20, 2018 8:30 AM |
I'm not Canadian nor their fan. R368 you're projecting little troll. The best thing would be to block you. Blocked.
On a better note, these Olympics have been some of the best I can remember in some time.
by Anonymous | reply 370 | February 20, 2018 9:30 AM |
P/C had the slight edge going in, but they couldn't afford errors--it really came down to the dress and the loss of focus that it caused.
There isn't a single anti-V/M troll. Several threads ago--in other words, before the Olympics--it was pretty clear that there were at least four different people who didn't like Virtue/Moir. Not that surprising--lots of Americans on this board and V/M and their fans were real twits when Davis/White won in Sochi--some of my own dislike of them stems from then.
As for the Shibs--I've liked them some years, not others. I didn't like that they were the only ones who got to skate for the team bronze when both H/D and C/B were as deserving of a shot. I also think they're stale as a partnership--"Fix You" was fresh, but they've been back to the well too often.
That said, both Virtue/Moir and the Shibs won fairly tonight--unless Tess took scissors to Gabby's costume. (That's a joke, by the way).
I'm still waiting for V/M fans to acknowledge that Davis/White beat them fairly in Sochi and the years leading up to Sochi.

I love listening to Orser. I got the feeling he wanted Javi to win - read a long interview and he talked about Javi having to make it on his own, while Yuzu lived with his mother, who "does a lot of things for him." He kept breakfast bars and protein drinks in his office for Javi, who'd show up for practice and look hungry in the mornings, lol.
And to a point made above, Hanyu has long arms and legs, unlike most Asians. And a silky Oksana Baiul style. He's really great but I fear he's emotionally fragile - WHY does he have to go one bigger (the quad-A)? Why so driven?? He's got the second gold, my God, is nothing ever enough? And his comment about people hating him ("My real feeling is that I don’t want to be hated. The more people watch me and the more I speak, the more I am hated. (laugher) So many different things will be written [about me]. Probably, there will be many more articles including lies and untruth.")- I haven't see anybody hating on him, WHERE IS ALL THIS? -- so he must be searching for negative comments by fans of other skaters or something - and then taking the comments way much to heart (ignoring all the positives).
Japanese (and Koreans) can be so extreme emotionally (except cute little Shoma - as he's said - he benefited from being in Hanyu's shadow - Hanyu gets all the fans and all the press, and Shoma can just work on his skating in peace, without the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Anyway, if that ankle doesn't get fixed, Yuzu should do ice shows (huge in Japan) and then settle into coaching or commentating in Japan. And find a nice partner to settle down with and try to be more normal. Although... can you be gay in Japan? Getting respect is like absolutely a requirement for a Japaner. Don't know if he is gay but maybe that's one of his intractable issues. I haven't noticed the other Asian skaters wear all the feminine jewelry like he does - almost to a Weir standard (and I would say past Rippon's).

Hanyu has long limbs but he has no extension or port de bras whatsoever so really it doesn't matter. I never understood how he can get such high PCS scores when he skates with flexed feet and terrible posture and arms the whole time. He skates mostly on flats too.

Free Dance
Tech Panel gave a tie in base value
Canada, Slovakia and Japan gave it to Virtue/Moir
Poland went for a tie
USA, Russia, Turkey, China and Spain gave it to Papadakis/Cizeron
In particular, USA, China and Turkey went hard for P/C over V/M. Something like 4-5 points lead. If it was for them, P/C would have got Gold.
Slovakia, Japan, USA, China and Spain had Shibutanis third in FD
Russia and Turkey had Bobrova/Soloviev in third

R375, I wonder if Hanyu's legion of obsessed female fans in Japan makes it hard for him to come out.
I think that was a big factor in Ian Thorpe's staying closeted for so long. Thorpe was a huge idol in Japan with young women and he made a lot of money doing ads there on the back of that fanbase. His management likely persuaded him it didn't make economic sense to come out and disappoint them, although EVERYONE in Australia knew that he was gay.

I'm always on the fence with Hanyu. Sometimes i think it's evident he is gay but most of the time I think he is not.

from Sports Illustrated
"It was all over now: the performance, the scoring and all the whispers. Louder than whispers, really. Alex and Maia Shibutani had been told no so many times that maybe their biggest achievement was not even winning the bronze medal in ice dancing. It was believing that they could.
There were doubts, right up to the end. They are siblings in an event in which romantic tension often pays off on the scoreboard. So many of the other skating pairs on the ice Tuesday night looked like they couldn’t wait to undress each other. Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the gold medalists, filled their free skate with their usual sexual tension. So did Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the U.S.
The Shibutanis had been told for years that being siblings would cost them—that judges favored romantic chemistry over common genetics. Alex said their short program in Korea was “our strongest skate of the season, and our strongest skate should get more points.” But it was later that night, with nobody watching, that Alex and Maia Shibutani were rewarded for their faith.
“Maia did this really awesome thing where she just pulled out her computer,” Alex said, describing the events of the night before. “And we started watching these old family videos that we had of us when we were little kids, off the ice, dancing around together and having a good time.…”
His voice caught. He was fighting back tears. Next to him, Maia wasn’t fighting anything back: the tears dripped down her cheeks, two decades in the making.
“Uh …” Alex said, trying to continue.
Was this the Shibutanis? Really? Usually, they are so smooth and so composed that it can be hard to elicit genuine emotions from them. Usually, they don’t want you to know that ice dancing can be physically painful, or that they push each other so hard that they fight with each other, or that ….
“Uh …” Alex said again.
Usually, they choose their words carefully, so nobody thinks they are complaining. Usually, they want you to think that they are just happy to be there, and that they aren’t too concerned with medals.
“It’s been such an amazing …” Alex said.
::::.....
Maia, the younger and more reserved Shibutani, said simply that she thought skating with Alex would be “way more fun.” But in skating circles, people whispered that Maia should have found a different partner.
The Shibutanis heard those whispers. Alex says, “There’s a point where people are like, ‘When the cuteness fades, and it’s awesome seeing them have fun on the ice, what is the real ceiling on their career?’” He knew why they said it: “We saw teams before us that were siblings that got stopped for one reason or the other.”
The Shibutanis apparently never considered a split. Where others saw a ceiling, they saw a foundation. Says Alex, “The family bond that we have with each other is a strength that no other team in this event has.” Maybe Maia or Alex could have won gold with a different partner. But that would not mean as much to them as winning bronze together.

I don't think Hanyu is gay...it's just that Japanese aesthetic that tends to be more feminine. I do think Daisuke Takahashi is gay, and perhaps Tatsuki Machida. Shoma seems asexual to me.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | February 20, 2018 12:35 PM |
Machida is obviously gay. Uno i don't know but he seems very close to some guy from his rink who posts a lot of pictures with him on social media. Takahashi i thought was bisexual since he was so into Meryl Davis. But...
by Anonymous | reply 393 | February 20, 2018 12:41 PM |
That's interesting R378. Johnny Weir said that the quality of the jumps plays a bigger part in the PCS than people realize, as does the overall effect. Skating has to have its idols and Hanyu has an appeal - he's good looking and as a mystique about him, an enigma, with all that effusive crying, the teddy bears, and then the death glares when he dances. He's also got a great Bielmann spin though he didn't use it in the Olympics this time due to his wonky ankle. So it's not like he's without talent - along with the sex appeal, androgynous though it may be. Hell, that IS the appeal.
I think this quote from Daisuke Takahashi summed up the Asian men pretty well:
"Hanyu tends to explode during his performance. Uno just keeps going at his own pace. Boyang doesn't get shaken by anything else going on around him. Chan, Kolyada and Chen tend to make mistakes and when they do they get dragged down by their own mistakes."
by Anonymous | reply 394 | February 20, 2018 12:43 PM |
* dances should be skates, lol, and I think I misspelled Bielman (Biellman?) oh well it's too early...
by Anonymous | reply 395 | February 20, 2018 12:48 PM |
Yuzu is very obviously not straight and it's even more obvious if you follow his Japanese interviews where he tries so hard to appear as 'manly' as possible using typically strong male word endings/expressions but there is always a moment where the facade breaks and he can't control his gay voice or mannerisms. And it's not some 'cultural' difference issue as plenty of Japanese also believe he is gay. Sadly I don't expect him to come out any time soon if at all, as more than the prospect of upsetting his fans I think it's the fear of disappointing his dragon mom who will have him settle down with a girl at some point.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | February 20, 2018 12:50 PM |
Also what kind of straight guy has Johnny Weir as one of his idols?
by Anonymous | reply 397 | February 20, 2018 12:53 PM |
R394 Well beautiful jumps and high tech should positively impact Performance and Composition so they do impact PCS. But they shouldn't impact SS tbh. That's why we get Zagitova/Medvedeva/Hanyu all these people getting the best skating skills scores when really it's not deserved. Or even worse some 8s et 9s for Boyang Jin. Also are you kidding me his Biellman spin sucks! Obviously he is not without talent he won two olympic golds! but his marks and that frenzy of him being the "best ever" are just unwarranted.
by Anonymous | reply 398 | February 20, 2018 1:01 PM |
It was Hanyu's flirting with Jeremy Abbott that made me think he was likely gay.
by Anonymous | reply 399 | February 20, 2018 1:08 PM |
It's funny how we can't say anything about Mr every corrupt judge's favourite's boy Shoma but trashing Hanyu seems to be perfectly ok. The guy has great skating skills and transitions + 1 foot skating and while his bielllmann isn't the best try and do one while also doing 4 quads. The guy deserves his high pcs and number one place.

R400 Hanyu has a lot of transitions and one foot skating but his skating skills are not that good. He skates on flats especially when he gets tired and his posture and projection are not good. No one is objecting to his 1st place or great quads.
Uno as much as you dislike him has the best rhythmic knee-bend, his positioning of his weight on the blade is fantastic which is why his skating is so smooth with no help from the upper body, his edges are fantastic, he skates in both directions completely effortlessly. His projection and musicality is far better. His jumps are definitely not.
by Anonymous | reply 411 | February 20, 2018 1:23 PM |
Lol. Easy to have deeper edges when all you do is 2 footed skating. Also I am still trying to understand what people mean by Shoma's musicality because I really can't see it. He looks dead inside most of the time. If you want incredible musicality it's Hanyu's ballade SP interpretation where literally every nuance is translated into a move. It's mesmerizing.

I think you can see the disappointment in Javi's face ever since Uno knocked him out of the silver medal. It made me sad.
But I say that as a Shoma fan - and Javi just screwed up on that quad Salchow and only had 3 while the other majors had 4. It's just the way it's done now.
I do see Shoma's musicality and thought the last minute of his Nessum Dorma was explosive as hell - he was selling it for all it was worth, on very tired legs.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | February 20, 2018 1:33 PM |
Yeah but the thing is, Shoma’s quad loop that he fell on was definitely under rotated and the tech panel didn’t call it as such. If they had called the UR, Javi would have been second, as he should be. He doubled his quad but he didn’t fall. Shoma’s 4T was borderline UR as well.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | February 20, 2018 1:35 PM |
Shoma never gets any UR calls when what he jumps can hardly be called quads most of the time. He is the new Chan in that judges completely throw away any objectivity while scoring him. It's clear he has strong backers within the isu/jsf.

R404 - Javi had just told Yuzu that he was retiring and Yuzu was wailing "I can't do it without you"
And if it's true about them not calling Shoma's URs, then I agree - Javi should have the silver. I do love watching Shoma skate though and think he has a nice flair.
I love Javi as a person but for some reason, his skating just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's too masculine :)

I feel sorry for Yuzu. His crush on Javi seems completely unrequited.
by Anonymous | reply 422 | February 20, 2018 1:46 PM |
I think whoever was talking about Yuzu's "dragon mom" was right:
Javier who trains with Yuzuru: “I never go to his apartment or go out to eat with him. I only see him on the rink.” Keiji Tanaka who has competed with him since they were young boys says that, “We probably won’t go out until he has retired.” He leads a very disciplined life and has left a trail of world records that have put pressure on other skaters.
Yuzu about his mom: My mother always cooks for me in Toronto. She would always ask, “what do you want to eat today?” Because she understands that, based on my physical condition at the time, the things that I can eat and the the things that I can’t would differ. She makes food that is easy for me to eat during that particular phase, while also keeping nutritional balance in mind––she made yakiniku (t/n: Japanese grilled meat) so that I can build physical strength, for example––and I am really grateful for that. My mother had to wake up even in the middle of the night when there was need to get in touch with Japan, which is in a different time zone. Speaking English all the time when abroad. Accompanying me to practice. And more. All of which I think are extremely exhausting. Not only physically, but also mentally tiring. Because, although I can take breaks and rest, there is no rest for my mother. But––and perhaps only I think so––but I feel that my mom, too, is fighting alongside me, with me. I’m truly thankful to my mother who supports all aspects of my life in Toronto.
by Anonymous | reply 423 | February 20, 2018 1:49 PM |
She accompanies him to practice !!!
I think I get Orser's comments a little better: his mother does a lot of things for him so he hasn't matured the way Javi had already done when he started in Toronto. He'd already lived away from home, on his own, was social and ran his own life. Yuzu "lived with his mother". He said Yuzu was still a "young man" and now he needs to transition into being a grown man. I noticed when Yuzu finished his FS, Orser said "You're a great man" just before saying he had to go (because Javi was next up).
by Anonymous | reply 424 | February 20, 2018 1:52 PM |
From what I read in some past article his mom was like this initially and moved with him to Toronto because he used to have pretty bad asthma (still does but it has gotten better) since he wa a child and couldn't sleep properly. But now I really wish she would go back to get husband who has been living separated from her for 6 years. Yuzu is in good hands in Toronto and maybe with her away he would finally start having a social life.

I've wondered since I read the line-up if they put Oma at the end so he could pull an 'upset' - that they thought that might happen. I swear I think there's a bit of reality-show like tinkering - with the upgrading of scores for the "stars" in order to create/maintain the idols (Hanyu, the Russian women).
Skating is diminished in popularity in the US (not sure about the rest of the world or if they care about that); it's flying high in Japan - so you'd think they'd do a better job of favoring Americans, if they're gonna rig it. Or even the Spaniard to break the Asian fatigue. Who knows? The coaches may play a role but I think Shoma's are Japanese (except the jumping coach in Chicago who said this about Shoma:)
"Sometimes you get people you really like, and you are entirely happy to help them," Chicago jumping coach Ukrainian Ouriashev said. "Even if we don't speak English, his personality is such that even if you are in a bad mood, he puts you in a better mood. He is bright, like good weather."

In the 2014 season it didn't matter what V/M did, they were constantly 2nd to D/W in every competition. V/M would listen to judges feedback, make changes, do extra practice on the ice. But the scores never moved and they would always be 2nd.

R449 I keep seeing conflicting things on that. I thought (maybe it was an old rule) that they could make a deduction for a malfunction but then others are saying it's only if something falls off on to the ice and endangers the skaters.
Someone else asked this before and I don't know if anyone answered. Could P/C have stopped and requested a re-skate like Tonya did?
by Anonymous | reply 451 | February 20, 2018 2:56 PM |
Have to love the V/M fans who complain about corruption and unfair judging...except when it comes to Canadian skaters. And LOL at the poster upthread bitching about a panel "unfriendly" to Virtue/Moir. That's typical V/M uber bullshit.
There was no French judge on the FD panel. But there was the President of Skate Canada, Leanna Caron. Surely you remember her from the SD...when she scored P/C almost 7 points behind V/M...just ahead of Weaver/Poje in 3rd. Some of the other competitions she's judged are the 2017 Worlds (where Scott Moir stumbled in an element but they still won)...and the 2015 GPF won by Weaver/Poje.
What I posted earlier about V/M and Shibutani fans has been in full view since the end of the competition. Shibutani fans (and seemingly Maia and Alex themselves) are so invested in the narrative of how they've been disrespected and so deserve everything they get. They've had to overcome being siblings, being Asian-American...blah blah blah. No wonder all the other teams hate them.
But V/M fans are batshit crazy and delusional. Yes, R443, V/M and their fans think they should have won in Sochi...but then V/M fans think they should have won every competition. They're pissed off now that P/C won the FD. Again, V/M have been on the last 3 Olympic podiums...the judges obviously don't hate them. And yet, like Shibutani supporters, V/M fans have convinced themselves that the entire system is rigged against them. Papadakis/Cizeron get good scores and it's corrupt judging. V/M get good scores and it's the fact that they are so amazing that the judges can't take it away from them like they did in Sochi.
Both those teams need to retire today and take their fans with them.

There’s a reason most skating costumes don’t feature flowy feathers or loose objects. If anything falls on the ice during a performance – something from their costume, a piece of jewelry, or something in their hair – it’s an automatic deduction from the judges.

But in the entire season leading up to Sochi it didn't matter what V/M did, they always came second to D/W
by Anonymous | reply 456 | February 20, 2018 3:13 PM |
R449-If P/C had stopped and requested a restart, they'd get an automatic 3 point deduction. The deductions they didn't receive were for the mistakes on the twizzles and one of the lifts. That kept them closer to V/M going into the free dance. Actually, being behind V/M in the short dance isn't unusual for them so it's not like this was unexpected.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | February 20, 2018 3:14 PM |
Interesting, R457. I thought they did receive a 2 point deduction which was what put them behind V/M.
I just checked the deductions for an interruption and from the deduction list I saw it would have been 1.0 point or an 11-20 second interruption and 2.0 point for a 21-30 second interruption, etc. A 5.0 point deduction is used for the 3 minute break like Tonya had. I don't believe there was a deduction in Tonya's day though?

Something fall from costume to ice: -1 deduction mandatory.
Interruption of music: 3 minutes to resolve the issue, -5 deduction mandatory
Interruption without stopping music: -1 every 10 seconds mandatory
Costume violation: costume not considered appropriate, blah blah. -1 if majority of judges call for it.

by Anonymous | reply 473 | February 20, 2018 4:43 PM |
Abachkina is a true star in the making in my opinion. I hope she finds a good partner. Thorn had become too short for her and kept fucking up the twizzles. That's a blow for French ice dance though because i wonder if she will keep competing for France.

*Thauron
by Anonymous | reply 475 | February 20, 2018 5:28 PM |
yes, she grew too much for him. He had troubles to handle her.
They continued to make mistakes this season. At Franch Nationals they were tied after SP with L/L and they fell in the FD. At Euros they were close to L/L and they aborted a lift in the FD.
Do France have any decent dance teams in Junior coming up? They have 3 spots at Euros but with A/T they don't have a decent third couple. Allesandrini/Souquet are also done (she retired). Who is left? At Senior Bs, there was another French team with a totally trashy Free Dance. Can't recall their names. They were very weak though.

[quote]Takahashi i thought was bisexual since he was so into Meryl Davis.
Being into Meryl is a definitive sign of a gay skater. She and Jeremy Abbott had a series of "prom" pics they took for fun, and people were like, omg they are dating! I mean, really?

[Quote] Do France have any decent dance teams in Junior coming up?
They have Lagouge/Rahier who podiumed at one of the GPs but had to pull out of their second because she broke her arm. And another even younger couple Demougeot/ Le Mercier who had a really interesting FD to Games of Thrones music this season. Both teams are kinda promising but they will have to work a lot to catch up to the Russians who are dominant in juniors at the moment.
by Anonymous | reply 478 | February 20, 2018 6:17 PM |
I saw that smug bastard, Moir make some remark on Twitter about how he didn't want to go up against the French again... not surprised! After all, it must have cost Canada a lot to pay off the right judges this time around!! Not to mention the costume sabotage!!
by Anonymous | reply 479 | February 20, 2018 6:27 PM |
Totally surprised about Abachkina/Thauron. I totally agree that she has star potential. And I feel like whenever P/C were performing this past season...she always got airtime in the audience waving a French flag. They're both young so I expect them to keep skating. I'd assume either the Russian or French federations were behind this. Like R478 said, Russia is actually very strong in upcoming Ice Dancers (both junior and recent seniors)...I'd be surprised if Russia called her back. But, I guess we'll see....

R478. thanks, I remember L/R now that your mention them.
Russia need some new talent in Senior. Bobrova/Soloviev are on their way out. But the only fact they stayed as Russian #1 for this quad speak volume about the current state of Russian Ice Dance. Stepanova/Bukin will take over. They can sneak into World podiums but I can't see them challenging P/C too much. Katsalapov will be the usual head case he has always been. Tiffany and Jonathan are nice but they are going nowhere. They were very lucky this year and got their Olympic moment
In the last decade Russian teams seem to have troubles transitioning from Jr to Sr. If I look at the Junior World medalists, I see many Russian couples who didn't last as Senior. Only Stepanova/Bukin survived
Both Popova/Mozgov and Loboda/Drozd suffer from having a weaker female partner. Could Abachkina come into play?
Ah, Bobrova said he won't compete for sure next season. It's not clear what Soloviev will do...some said he had a new girl lined up....

There is not one iota of doubt in my mind that V/M deserved the gold.
by Anonymous | reply 484 | February 20, 2018 6:52 PM |
I just really really hate the fact that Canada got their way. They are so insufferable.
It makes me realize that the reason they are cool about most things unlike Americans is because they have no opportunity to be powerful/the best at them (geopolitics, economy, most sport/cultural stuff).
But when it is something where they think they are number 1, they are worse than ultranationalist Trumpistas.
Try talking about the US team with a hockey fan, say you think Germany has the most beautiful forests or speak about how Swedish people are the most polite and welcoming ever. All hell breaks loose.
It baffles me that I find their figure skaters and figure skating community worse than Russia.

Your level of delusion is jaw-dropping.

I just had to blocked R485. A troll in every sense of the word.
The V/M FD was a fantastic performance done under the biggest pressure, Olympic pressure. I'm surprised the French edge them on the FD.
With that said it makes me yearn for D/W. They could have made this Olympics even better.
by Anonymous | reply 487 | February 20, 2018 7:24 PM |

And in this area, R488, it will be more than 4 years. They're about to drop off the face of the skating world. They should be happy they got their medals here. It's going to be a generation before they're on the podium again.

If someone is responsible for their loss apart from whoever went "snip snip" on Gabi's dress, it's Didier himself for being a complete twat boasting about them winning gold one year in advance and generating tons of hate towards them.

Bobrova/Soloviev, Cappellini/Lanotte and Weaver/Poje finished in the same exact positions as 4 years ago in Sochi.
As you already know Virtue/Moir moved from #2 to #1
Shibutanis moved from #9 to #3
Chock/Bates moved from #8 to #9
Coomes/Buckland moved from #10 to #11
Guignard/Fabbri moved from #14 to #10
Agafonova/Ucar moved from #22 to #19
Hurtado/Khalavin (#12) did one spot better than Hurtado/Diaz (#13)
Muramoto/Reed (#15) did much better than Reed/Reed (#21)

R503 I hate the judging system more. Yes, quads are amazing, but I miss the artistic performances. But it looks like they are considering options to fix it. This article was really interesting and covered some proposed changes.
"Another change may include replacing the current short program and free skate with what would effectively be an athletic program and an artistic program. Each would award full medals in events like the Olympics and the world championships, and there also would be a full medal for the all-around winner."

Fernandez won't go to Worlds. Spain will enter Javier Raya and leave the second spot vacant as Felipe Montoya doesn't have the minimum TES for Worlds (they are harder than those for Olympics).
Savchenko/Massot will go to Worlds. Then they will decide about their future. She seems keen to continue...he is the one who wants to retire.
by Anonymous | reply 510 | February 20, 2018 10:37 PM |
LOL is she gonna get a new partner for 2022?? She should skate with Zhang for China tbh.
Doing one "athletic" and one "artistic" program each with medal winners is the dumbest thing i have ever heard so i have no doubt that ISU is gonna implement that as quick as possible. They want to make skating like one of those 90's shows or pro competitions so they can distribute medals to American skaters allegedly more artistic. Newsflash, that won't revive skating in USA and that will destroy it in Japan.
by Anonymous | reply 511 | February 20, 2018 11:13 PM |
R456, thanks for proving my point about V/M fans. Maybe the reason that V/M couldn't beat D/W that year is that D/W were that much better--more athletic, faster, more intricate programs. And Charlie had cleaned up his act on twizzles and stumbles.
The accusations about vote trading and bribery have never had any substance behind them. It's poor sportsmanship--and V/M didn't do much to discourage it. Davis/White, on the other hand, have always shown a lot of class that way.
I'd say the real proof that Davis/White were an unbeatable team in 2014 is that V/M has aped them in terms of increasing speed and variety of acrobatic lifts and the Shibs went for the multiple lift changes, perfect twizzles and almost-never-ever-making a mistake. In contrast, Papadakis/Cizeron do their own thing (which the Shibs also pull from).
As for Tanith's attitude--I don't find her as problematic as some others do here. V/M are technically very strong. I think she's dead wrong about their acting ability--it's all ham and no sandwich--but whatever. I value her knowledge of the sport and ability to explain it. Also like the fact she doesn't talk all the time. I don't miss Tracy Wilson. Charlie and Ben Agosto also do a decent job as commentators.
Wonder if NBC will bother showing Bradie Tennell's short since it's so early--what a nightmare draw. She has the highest score internationally this year of any American woman, but this is the sort of start position that will pull her down a couple of placements.
For the person who wants Evgenia Medvedeva to pull a Nathan Chen--never gonna happen. The last time this chick fell it was because she had a broken foot. That girl is a rock. Zagitova is more prone to nerves, but she also has so many points in her programs that she can fall a lot and still be up there.
This is like ice dance--the only really question is who will get the bronze after Medved and Zags split up gold and silver. Third Russian, Japanese or Canadian.

We need Hanyu voodoo coach to make Medvedeva fall. Or can Tessa stop sucking Scott's dick for a minute and snip snip Medvedeva's costume too? (This reminds me 2002 when Plushenko and Mishin said that Yagudin cursed them with black magic and that's why he fell in the SP. I miss the Russian crazies.)

Gadbois obviously had a good Olympics. Hubbell/Donohue are disappointed (he looked devasted in K&C) but we are still talking about 4th place
Zueva did well in the end. She got the bronze for the Shibs. And her 2 low level teams got the placements they were hoping for
Shpilband did worse. Chock/Bates' mistake totally killed their score. The Brits did ok, they didn't look too please, but that's their level this season. MIn/Gamelin are probably happy, they couldn't hope for much more. Then he had 2 teams out of the 4 who didn't make FD (and Nazarova/Nikitin's elimination wasn't expected).

by Anonymous | reply 577 | February 21, 2018 1:50 AM |
Damn. Even with a fall, Bradie finishes almost 10 points higher than anyone else in her group.

Ha! Terrance is telling people to stick around and not change the channel after Johnnie pretty much says it's the two Ruskies for Gold and silver
"Stay! It'll be competitive, I promise".

Tara has upped her game with the bedazzler.
by Anonymous | reply 580 | February 21, 2018 1:54 AM |
R557 Tara was 15 and Michelle was 17 in 1998. Bradie is 20, but she still looks like a junior skater in her presentation.

Has China had a competitive female skater since Chen Lu?
by Anonymous | reply 582 | February 21, 2018 1:56 AM |
Damn, that shade of blue is amazing. A lot of skaters have been rocking that color.
Does anybody know what the name of the color is?
by Anonymous | reply 583 | February 21, 2018 1:57 AM |
It’s from Johnny Weir's jewelry collection, R577.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | February 21, 2018 1:58 AM |
Yeah, R581. I just find it ridiculous that they keep going on and on about how young they are. They're not really any younger than athletes who've been competing at the Olympics for decades. Chen Lu was also what, 15 at her first Olympics?
And Bradie is an embarrassment skating to Cinderella at 20.

R583 the lighter or darker shade?
by Anonymous | reply 586 | February 21, 2018 1:59 AM |
From her interviews Bradie sounds like she has the emotional maturity of a 15 year old, so I guess the music suits her.
by Anonymous | reply 587 | February 21, 2018 2:00 AM |
Wow, cool, R584, thanks.
The darker blue, like a dark royal or peacock or something.

It's odd that Chen Lu didn't inspire more singles skaters. Her 96 Worlds long program to Rachmaninoff is the best artistic program that I've ever seen from a singles skater.

Bradie might just be hungry.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | February 21, 2018 2:01 AM |
Wait Bradie is 20? OMG I would have guessed 16. Maybe even 15.
by Anonymous | reply 591 | February 21, 2018 2:02 AM |
R588 sort of looks like Admiral blue.
by Anonymous | reply 592 | February 21, 2018 2:02 AM |
So Bradie qualified. Little doubt she wouldn't.

I just saw someone post that Brian Boitano won 30 years ago today. Damn that was a long time ago.

Link to new thread for when this one maxes out.
by Anonymous | reply 595 | February 21, 2018 2:07 AM |
Didn't Johnny wear a head piece just like this?
by Anonymous | reply 596 | February 21, 2018 2:10 AM |
It even has a pretty name: Admiral Blue. Beautiful.
Talk about a tin hat! 😳😳
by Anonymous | reply 597 | February 21, 2018 2:10 AM |
I rooted for Boitano, but God I hated those military-style costumes he wore.
by Anonymous | reply 598 | February 21, 2018 2:11 AM |
R598 well he was portraying some kind of Lieutenant wasn't he?
