African American speed skater Shani Davis BOYCOTTS the Winter Olympic opening ceremony in 'race row' for losing coin toss

Talk about black privilege!

by Anonymousreply 1February 10, 2018 1:12 AM

And his gold and silver even with her bronze.

It's bull shit. Shouldn't have been a coin toss.

Team Shani.

I don't blame him. Of course they were going to give it to the white girl. This is the TRUMP era.

by Anonymousreply 4February 10, 2018 1:27 AM

Remember his rivalry with white, Christian fundamentalist skater Chad Hedrick from a few Olympics ago (mid 2000s if I recall)? Chad is pictured below.

Black people....Endearing themselves to their fellow Americans, since 1776.

by Anonymousreply 7February 10, 2018 2:04 AM

He needs to get over himself. How long has he lived in America? If you're not white, you're not right. And now Trump is president....move on. Take in it the ass like nelly bottom and move on.

by Anonymousreply 8February 10, 2018 3:11 AM

The flag bearer vote is a popularity contest voted on by the athletes, not based on the medals won. He lost, he needs to get over it.

by Anonymousreply 11February 10, 2018 3:52 AM

If it was a tie, why couldn't they both be the flag bearers? Other countries have two, so what was the need for a coin toss??

If he agreed to the coin toss, fuck him. If not, that's another story. As mentioned above, it could have, been shared.

by Anonymousreply 21February 10, 2018 5:02 AM

The huge error he made was bringing race into it.

He should have focused on his accomplishments as an Olympic athlete and the ridiculousness of awarding this honor based on a coin toss. He should have stated that he would have accepted losing if it had been purely based on the vote by the various sports federations selecting the flag bearer, but since it was a tie his accomplishments should have been taken into consideration, rather than the capriciousness of luck.

by Anonymousreply 22February 10, 2018 5:05 AM

R22 he LOST a goddamn coin toss. He's got Jada Pinknstink Syndrome.

by Anonymousreply 23February 10, 2018 5:10 AM

Like R9 said, the flag bearer is voted in by the other athletes. Davis did not win the honor because he's a colossal douche, and his reaction only serves to illustrate why he lost.

R24- But he did win - along with another athlete. That was the whole point of the coin toss.

by Anonymousreply 30February 10, 2018 5:42 AM

The voting was tied of the panel that decided. So they did a coin flip.

The headline is kind of misleading. He isn't boycotting the opening ceremony because he did not win the coin toss. He wasn't going to go period because he wanted to focus on what he needed to do in his event but the chance to carry the flag he was going to make that exception and go. Snce he isn't going to carry the flag, he went back to his old plan which was not to attend.

by Anonymousreply 31February 10, 2018 5:46 AM

I was a big fan of Shani, so this is disappointing. It seems very girlish to me, very bitchy. If there were a white person carrying the flag for the USA in the summer games that would be a scandal. But for the winter games? Like Bomani Jones says, it is the Whiter Olympics not the Winter Olympics. All the events are Nordic, Swiss, German etc. That is reality.

Had he won the popular vote outright I certainly would have supported him as the flag bearer. Now I don't even want to watch him compete.

by Anonymousreply 32February 10, 2018 5:57 AM

All eight federations that make up the US Olympic team get one vote each. 4 voted for him. 4 voted for her. The tie was broken by a coin toss. This is how it has been done for decades. They both knew and agreed to this. If it were merit based, he still wouldn't have won because he is not the decorated member of the team. Shaun White is. He skipped the opening ceremonies because he was having a temper tantrum and thought that he would get support for protesting but he just got called out for being a punk. That's when the story changed to him skipping to prep for his first race. He's a whiny baby who cannot take criticism which is why he locked his Twitter.

I wonder what the vote count was. Anyone know? I find it difficult to believe the actual vote count of the athletes was tied.

It also seems to me that in the case of a tie it would make more sense to decide based upon medal count.

None of that matters.

The white supremacist bigots here just an excuse to complain about black people. Mind you these people live in predominantly white neighborhoods in predominantly white cities in predominantly white states in a country that is predominantly white. They work with mostly whites. They can go most anywhere and see nothing but whites. But they spend everyday complaining about the 13% of the population that has little to no affect whatsoever on their lives. The race of people who is most responsible for their daily irritation, aggravation and misery in their own. But somehow that lifetime of negative experiences, involving people who look just like them, does not translate into negative stereotypes and generalizations about whites. It translates into: Now that my white family has kicked my ass; the white men in Washington have kicked my ass; the white men at work have kicked mu ass. Let me rush in here and complain about black people. I read about one on the internet,

by Anonymousreply 46February 10, 2018 12:58 PM

R45 is correct.

by Anonymousreply 47February 10, 2018 2:35 PM

R46 you are so right. This is just an excuse to complain about black people. PERIOD! In this world White people will always get what they want. at least for the foreseeable future anyways. All good things eventually come to an end. And white people have had a good thing going for them for centuries. At the expense of other people.

by Anonymousreply 49February 10, 2018 6:29 PM

R45 except none of that happened so the whole scenario is only in your imagination. Did he throw a hissy fit because he lost a coin toss? Yes he did. Did he claim it was racist? Yes he did. The girl has done nothing wrong but you are still whining about imaginary situations so you can throw in an MRA fantasy. Fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 50February 10, 2018 6:31 PM

It's an excuse to complain about black people? How stupid. No, Davis brought the negative attention on to himself when he chose to be a crybaby after losing a fair coin toss and then tried to make it about race. And it blew up in his face. But do go ahead and blame whitey for keeping the black man down, when in reality he does the job all by himself.

by Anonymousreply 51February 10, 2018 6:31 PM

R48 oh and did you miss the coin toss part? Was the coin racist?

I did not know that we had even 10 AAs in the Winter Olympics team.

by Anonymousreply 59February 10, 2018 7:38 PM

We know America is racist. DL is racist. Why is a black person always lambasted with racist vitriol just for speaking the truth? You're a racist, black people are going to call you on it. Just be a racist and keep it moving. What is infuriating is people arguing that obviously racist actions and attitudes are not racist. We see you and know how you are.

by Anonymousreply 63February 10, 2018 8:50 PM

R60 painting every white person as racist is no different than stereotyping all black people as...fill in the blank. It also stops whites from participating in your cause and the ones who do are over exaggerating for brownie points.

There was no racism involved in this decision. There is a clear voting process, there was a tie and a tie breaker via coin toss, left to chance.

People like you set back the civil rights movement.

by Anonymousreply 64February 10, 2018 9:10 PM

Both Shani and Chad Hedrick have horrible attitudes as a result of their delicate egos. Hedrick is now a real estate agent and Christian speaker in Houston. His Instagram page for his real estate activities is the cheesy “From Gold to Sold!” He had a couple of other jobs after his skating career but apparently failed at them.

by Anonymousreply 65February 10, 2018 10:05 PM

I agree with R64. BTW, I use up my allotment of FFs every day on DL on racist posts, so I agree about hating racism in the US, and on the DL. But, in this case, it was Shani who inserted race into the controversy in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 66February 10, 2018 10:12 PM

[quote]It seems very girlish to me, very bitchy. If there were a white person carrying the flag for the USA in the summer games that would be a scandal.

Uh, why would that be a scandal, R32? I assume there are a lot more white athletes than black ones at the summer games as well.

by Anonymousreply 67February 10, 2018 10:17 PM

The coin toss is a stupid way to decide it. They should've rotated holding the flag instead. But if Shani had won the coin toss instead of that white girl would he have still called it an unfair and racist process?

by Anonymousreply 68February 10, 2018 10:17 PM

Meanwhile, lots of athletes from all over the world who "broke training" to walk in the ceremony Friday are competing now and in coming days. Sorry we missed you, Shani.

(As an aside, the US dudes in the first event in snowboarding got way outclassed by Europeans and Asians today. Bummer, as one of them actually said on live TV)

by Anonymousreply 74February 10, 2018 11:25 PM

No endorsements for Tyrone.

by Anonymousreply 75February 10, 2018 11:44 PM

R74 No. Hamlin was the first American woman to ever win a medal in Olympic luge.

Shani is a little bitch. No one likes him. That he even got half the votes is amazing. He lost the coin toss and bitched like the whiner that he always is. No one came to his defense and no one boycotted with him because he is an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 76February 10, 2018 11:50 PM

This really doesn’t move the dial to bring us into mainstream US culture and society. Bad move.

by Anonymousreply 77February 10, 2018 11:55 PM

R74 it’s not based on medal count it’s voted by other athletes. Nobody likes the whiny assed racist and I would bet he only got half votes because people don’t want to be called racist for not picking the annoying black guy. He’s a disgrace and his ridiculous posturing diminishes every victim of real racism.

by Anonymousreply 78February 10, 2018 11:55 PM

You are making my point. America is racist. Black people don't imagine racism -- Trump is ACTUALLY President. Davis apparently believes he is the victim of racism and why should he be doubted when racism is everywhere and present in all of our institutions? How would you know it was NOT racist if you were not part of the transaction? Why bother to argue a point you cannot know? Particularly when racism is so real and prevalent in our past and present. Trust Davis to recognise racism when he experiences it. Accept that it was racist and move on.

I think he's objecting partly to the fact that the votes were split evenly in the first place. Maybe he feels that, as he has more medals than she has, they should have skipped the coin toss and let him carry the flag. I can understand why he might feel that way, for all that he hasn't really shown good shortsmanship in the way he's expressed it.

by Anonymousreply 90February 11, 2018 1:53 AM

Maybe he should show a little self control and stop whining like a petulant child over something that is very clearly not racist in any way, maybe the other athletes would like him enough to vote for him.

Unless of course r83 thinks the coin is a secret racist just waiting for the day it will be called upon to aid a decision in a black vs white question.

by Anonymousreply 91February 11, 2018 2:00 AM

R91 - unless they didn't vote for him because he is African-American. The fact that this is the most diverse team yet - that includes 10 African American athletes out of 224 means nothing? Yep, nothing to see here, keep moving.

by Anonymousreply 92February 11, 2018 2:13 AM

If they didn't vote for him it's because his reputation as a jackass is well-known and they don't want him representing them.

by Anonymousreply 93February 11, 2018 2:14 AM

[quote] He really should have been the flag carrier. He's won 2 gold and 2 silver medals while the chick only won one bronze. He's the better US athlete.

You would do well to read up on this before you open your mouth and spout off about things you know nothing about. This had nothing to do with who was the most accomplished athlete. If it were, Shani would never have been considered. It would have gone to Shawn White. This was actually a popularity contest. The position was voted on by the athletes. Shani and this woman tied. So, there was a coin toss. If this had to do with athletic ability, Shani would never have been considered. Can you understand that? That's always been the rules. But I guess you expect the Olympics to switch the rules for this guy?

Frankly, I'm astonished anyone voted for him. He's kind of always been an asshole. I'm sure almost every person who voted for him regrets doing it.

by Anonymousreply 95February 11, 2018 2:42 AM

Agree that it’s odd that anyone would vote for Shani. He’s a bad person. There must have been a political motivation.

by Anonymousreply 96February 11, 2018 2:49 AM

R92 he claimed the coin toss was dishonorable and racist, not the fact it was a tied vote. He’s a whiny child with a huge sense of entitlement. Fuck him. He’s not liked, he lost a coin flip, he exposed himself as a bad loser who’s willing to play the race card over an inanimate object.

by Anonymousreply 97February 11, 2018 3:59 AM

Um, why the fuck should there be forced diversity in athletics? The fastest/strongest wins, period.

by Anonymousreply 102February 11, 2018 4:55 AM

The rules for the selection of who would carry the flag for the US team in the Opening Ceremonies were decided a YEAR AGO. And that included using a coin toss should there be a tie of votes as there was.

If Mr. Davis had a problem with the way the choice was to be made, he should have expressed his doubts a year ago.

by Anonymousreply 103February 11, 2018 5:54 AM

Nice that he's shown that a great black athlete can be as cunty as a great white athlete.

by Anonymousreply 104February 11, 2018 7:10 AM

Just to be clear the first Winter Olympics were 94 years ago. Over that time we have worked our way up to 10 African-Americans on Team USA out of 224. There is no way that racism was at ll involved in getting us to the point where a coin toss determined who would carry the flag?

You at least have to appreciate the irony that this happened during Black History Month.

If you want to dig a little deeper into race and the Olympics compare Team USA for the Summer Olympics with Team USA for the Winter Olympics.

Go even further and add class into the mix. Compare diversity among the various sports.

by Anonymousreply 105February 11, 2018 8:21 AM

How many black people have tried for a Winter Olympics place r105? You’re shrieking racism without anything to back it up. Do black people take much of an interest in winter sports? The sports are very definitely Northern European in invention, you don’t see many ski slopes in Baltimore.

Why should diversity matter when it is a competition based on ability? There should be a quota made of of non-whites even if they suck at ski jumping?

by Anonymousreply 106February 11, 2018 12:24 PM

When you compare with the Summer Olympics, obviously there are some sports where AAs have a monopoly, so rather than mess up any of the sports, it would be better to let people do what they do best and let the results decide the team selections.

by Anonymousreply 107February 11, 2018 12:30 PM

R106 and R107 - you're right when something is dominated by white people no reason to think racism is at play.

Team USA - lots of white folks. American prisons - lot of black folks. Nothing to see here. Keep moving.,

by Anonymousreply 108February 11, 2018 4:34 PM

Team USA - lots of white folks: yes, lots of talented white folks who worked their asses off at their sports to qualify for the Olympic team.

American prisons - lots of black folks: yes, lots of black folks breaking laws and ending up in prison, through nobody's fault but their own.

Yep, nothing to see here. It's really very simple.

by Anonymousreply 109February 11, 2018 4:40 PM

Yesterday when introducing "senior figure skating analyst" or whatever title Scott Hamilton now has, they showed the little guy holding the flag at Lake Placid 1980, his (ahem) first Olympics.

He won gold in 1984, and obviously had won none when he was selected as flag bearer in '80, for whatever reason.

Shani should have taken the fair decision with grace. God knows he already has more endorsement / appearance money than Hamlin, a different kind of groundbreaker, will probably ever earn in her life

by Anonymousreply 110February 11, 2018 4:46 PM

If Davis was unhappy with the rules for selecting the flag bearer, he should have spoken up when the rules were set or published.

To only express his unhappiness now is due to the fact that he lost.

Childish.

And, so the coin toss was in February? That is the month of the Winter Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 111February 11, 2018 4:48 PM

Shameful. During Black History Month.

by Anonymousreply 112February 11, 2018 4:52 PM

I'm surprised Shani didn't bash the other black athletes who were at the opening ceremony.

by Anonymousreply 113February 11, 2018 4:59 PM

If the voting had tied between two white athletes how would the committee make the decision? A coin toss? Or would they have broken the tie with merit-based considerations? We will never know.

by Anonymousreply 114February 11, 2018 5:00 PM

That's ridiculous, r114. The coin-toss tiebreaker rule was already in place before the vote.

But you probably knew that. And who defines "merit," anyway?

I'm just glad at least one of the candidates for the coin toss wasn't a wealthy, already-famous media star (Lindsay, Shaun W, Nathan, or some Mountain Dew spokesperson).

Maybe what Hamlin achieved against all odds four years ago in an obscure sport, and the fact she continued to train and work for this year, made as much of an impression on her fellow athletes as anyone else did. Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 115February 11, 2018 5:19 PM

They always get what they want. It's historical in America. Has been for centuries. With no real repercussions. Look at whats going on in Washington the white house and congress. No one is even trying to hold TRUMP accountable for anything. But republicans attacked Obama for wearing a tan suit. James Brown said this is a mans world. It should have been it a white mans world. Because it truly is. The "opioid epidemic" can eat all of them. I don't give a fuck.

[quote] If the voting had tied between two white athletes how would the committee make the decision? A coin toss? Or would they have broken the tie with merit-based considerations?

They'd have used a coin toss. That's the rules. How the heck are you people not able to understand this? Why are you even bringing merit into this? This had NOTHING to do with merit. If it did, Shani wouldn't have been considered. It was actually a popularity contest

I have to wonder how he was even up for consideration in the first place. This man is such an asshole. I can't imagine that many people voting for him. Thankfully, he lost the coin toss and we didn't have such an asshole representing our country. I'm sure if he loses, he'll make sure to blame everyone else

by Anonymousreply 119February 11, 2018 7:01 PM

I don't understand how she was even chosen in the first place. A bronze in luge? Sorry, but that's some bullshit. Shani Davis is right to feel slighted.

It shouldn't be down to a personality contest and a coin toss. No one has ever heard of this woman. She's 31 and he's 35 - you'd think the older person who has been in more olympics would win by default.

He's right to be upset - she's a nobody.

by Anonymousreply 120February 11, 2018 7:11 PM

Not anymore thanks to his whining. He was the tire iron of this Olympics.

[quote] I don't understand how she was even chosen in the first place. A bronze in luge? Sorry, but that's some bullshit. Shani Davis is right to feel slighted.

No, it isn't bullshit. She's the first American woman to medal in her event, that's a big deal in sports, and there is no win by default in the Olympics, not even when choosing the flag-bearer. A coin toss is the standard procedure in the event of a tie.

by Anonymousreply 122February 11, 2018 7:19 PM

[quote]you'd think the older person who has been in more olympics would win by default.

And you'd be wrong.

Especially if the "older person" was not planning g to be available to walk unles he got the flag, and can't be bothered with the whole "I'm part of a team" thing.

by Anonymousreply 123February 11, 2018 7:20 PM

This thread is no different than what America is truly about. Demonizing black men as much and as often as possible. But the true villans "white men" hence their the ones with the real power destroying people's lives for their own gain. But no let's go after the black guy. This whole thread is completely over blown.

by Anonymousreply 126February 11, 2018 7:40 PM

[quote]It pays to not be a sullen nasty jerk.

I can't remember if I read this in the Constitution or in my Business 101 textbook. Or was it just advice passed down by decent people in my family for generations?

Good advice to follow, generally. Best of luck, Shani. Everybody always roots for the good guy...

by Anonymousreply 127February 11, 2018 7:43 PM

Oh please R126. If he had one and she was as equally disagreeable with the sexist remarks there would have been a thousand what a cunt threads.

by Anonymousreply 128February 11, 2018 7:44 PM

Unless they found a way to rig the coin toss, she is just a sore loser.

Racist coin toss gripes

Oh please, Shani Davis, please!

Just skate and win, bitch

by Anonymousreply 130February 11, 2018 8:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 131February 11, 2018 8:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 132February 11, 2018 8:38 PM

Oh, I also hope Erin Hamlin wins gold to rub it in his face.

by Anonymousreply 133February 11, 2018 8:39 PM

Wasn't he caught lying about a rival making racist remarks?

by Anonymousreply 134February 11, 2018 8:44 PM

I watched some of the Opening Ceremonies and saw the USA team (and many other teams) come in.

The flag waver for USA was just so excited and delighted to be there. As were the rest of the team coming in directly behind her. You could see the joy in their faces.

The same was true of teams of other nations even as it was pointed out since most of them would not win a medal and knew they didn't have a chance of medaling that the Opening Ceremony was a really big deal for them.

Davis had no intention of attending. So, the coin toss luckily supported the decision he already made. It relieved him of having to attend a Ceremony he did not want to attend.

One of the best things about the Opening Ceremonies is seeing the happy faces of the athletes.

Having the sullen, nasty jerks stay away works in everybody's favor.

by Anonymousreply 135February 11, 2018 8:48 PM

Miss Shani made her Twitter private.

by Anonymousreply 136February 11, 2018 8:53 PM

R134 That would not surprise me at all. That is becoming a "thing," just like faking Neo Nazi graffiti and leaving a noose hanging on one's tree is becoming a thing" too. Of course, lying about being a victim of racism will eventually backfire.

by Anonymousreply 137February 11, 2018 8:58 PM

He's one of those people who tries to make everything about race. It's the reason no one can stand him.

by Anonymousreply 138February 11, 2018 9:00 PM

Oh well, I guess no one noticed, what with the 241 U.S. athletes who DID choose to march in the opening ceremonies. Not everything is an "issue." When one throws a tantrum over carrying a flag, it kind of diminishes the shouts of people who are crying out for justice for African American children who are being murdered in the streets. Choose your issues wisely.

by Anonymousreply 139February 11, 2018 10:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 140February 11, 2018 10:03 PM

From looking around on Twitter, plenty of people called him out for being a whiner and he deserved it. Many people have said they will not root for him.

by Anonymousreply 141February 11, 2018 10:19 PM

Oh he's very good looking I think, but the chip on his shoulder combined with his sense of entitlement make him much less attractive.

But what white people like is often as far as one can get from what Black people like in sports celebrities. I adore Charles "Mr. Say Anything" Barkley. but the majority of black call him a coon because he is so beloved by white Americans.

So I am guessing that they will love this guy for being woke and refusing to coon for the man. Of course, that won't get him a job or make him a multi-millionaire like Charles.

by Anonymousreply 142February 11, 2018 10:21 PM

Jesse Jackson is also getting dragged on twitter for calling the coin flip unfair. I'm also sick of him. I'm surprised Jackson isn't bitching about the black Team USA members who marched behind the white woman carrying the flag.

by Anonymousreply 143February 11, 2018 10:25 PM

This whole thing is just uncalled for, and very sad. Pathetic, truly.

I would bet that of the athletes who voted 50/50 between him and the young woman who won, exactly zero of them voted based on race.

by Anonymousreply 144February 11, 2018 10:38 PM

R142 needs to head over to LSA. That board is virtually all black women and they've been criticizing him too. NO ONE likes this twerp.

by Anonymousreply 145February 11, 2018 10:39 PM

Think how much credit Ms Davis could have gained by showing up for the ceremony and getting pics taken with the flag bearer. And maybe even making a good-natured joke of the coin flip with her, in some way.

Instead he had to be a sore loser kind of douche.

by Anonymousreply 146February 11, 2018 10:44 PM

There are a couple of posters on LSA defending him. One has said that USOC has been trying Shani for awhile and that he trains in Canada due to the issues. He has a history of being cry baby douche and I think USOC doesn't give into his shit.

by Anonymousreply 150February 11, 2018 11:12 PM

R147 please explain how a coin flip is racist? I’m truly astonished that anyone can think that - the rule about tossing a coin to break a tie has been in place long before Shani had his tantrum. The coin doesn’t know where he falls on the Pantone chart. He knew about the selection process beforehand but didn’t complain until he lost so he’d have been quite happy with the coin toss if it went his way. Somehow in your mind that’s racist? Hunty, you have more immediate problems you should be addressing instead of wasting time whining on DL.

by Anonymousreply 151February 11, 2018 11:19 PM

If Shani had been selected and actually showed up and carried the flag, would he then be complaining that the white athletes got to have fun and take selfies while he was made to carry the baggage? He’s a bitter person who is always complaining about something.

by Anonymousreply 152February 12, 2018 12:46 AM

Dr Boyce Watkins was right. Dealing with white people will literally make you physically sick. "WHITE SUPREMACY" is toxic and and is apart of every facet of American life. life on this earth period!

[quote]Funny how everyone all of sudden is an expert on this guy and I can't imagine how any knew who the fuck he was before then.

I laughed at that. It looks most of the LSA posters think he's douche and then there are the few posters that claim Davis has been targeted by the Olympic committees for years. They are probably pulling that out of their asses to defend him. Some LSA posters will make up shit to defend people. Since Davis lost a coin toss to a white woman that probably pisses off those couple of posters.

R166 not giving him a Gold Medal before the Olympics

by Anonymousreply 167February 12, 2018 5:48 AM

There are petitions to have him removed him from Team USA. Of course, those petitions won't do shit. But, it's another thing that shows that most people don't sympathize with his whiny attitude. In his whiny tweet he said "I can wait until 2022". If he makes it compete in 2022, he's not going to be voted as flag bearer due to this incident.

by Anonymousreply 168February 12, 2018 6:12 AM

GANGNEUNG, South Korea (AP) — Shani Davis labored across the line, gulping for air, a shell of what he once was in a clapskate.

The years can be cruel that way.At 35, Davis is very likely skating in his final Olympics. On Tuesday night, he finished 19th in his debut at Pyeongchang Games, hardly looking like the guy who will surely go down as one of America's greatest Winter Olympians.

"The ice is super-fast," he said. "Unfortunately, I wasn't."
