Carmen Miranda's Death

Even though I was not alive during all this, I have heard of her/seen her in old movies. Why was she so famous?

She was a fun personality. She's still huge in Brazil 60 years after her death.

She was the first Brazilian singer that most Americans knew. Showed up in the cartoons and everything (see below)

The Brazilian (military) government shamelessly dragged her for being "too Americanized" because of her Hollywood movies.

r3 beat me to it. I learned of Carmen Miranda thanks to Warner Bros. cartoons.

Even Daffy Duck loved to dress up and sing as Carmen Miranda

Very odd thread title for an intro to discuss the unique talents and well earned fame of Miranda!

Carmen Miranda was a very colorful character literally. She took Hollywood by storm but her popularity began to decrease after World War II. Eventually she began having health problems which culminated in a heart attack which killed her at only age 46.

She was likable, accessible, and non threating, plus the lady had talent. At one time, Hollywood's highest paid female star.

R1 Love that clip!

Fabulous photo, R6.

OP, find the documentary called "Bananas is My Business" for a look at her amazing life story.

Every female star has borrowed a little from Carmen. Whether they know it or not. Some men too.

She was actually Portuguese. Her family moved to Brazil when she was fairly young.
