Cher Oscars 1988
Cate Blanchett's 1999 Oscar dress by John Galliano, memorable for the nude panel on the back with the embroidered flowers and hummingbird.

R8's has always been my favorite.

Goop is insufferable (of course), but I have to admit I loved her Tom Ford cape dress from the Oscars. It brought some drama without going over the top.

LOVE cher at r13 but not in the OP.

The swan dress must be one of the more famous ones.
I also loved Gwyneth's cape dress. Gorgeous and truly memorable. Regal.

Kidman's dress at R17 was my most favorite dress I'd eve seen anywhere ever until Blanchett's dress at R8 came along.
Galliano is brilliant, too bad he's a fucking nazi.

M's gold number from the Oscars in 2012.
A rare fashion hit for her. Very regal and fitting for the occasion; it looked like she had picked it out years beforehand in preparation for Oscar #3. I bet she's also got something picked out for #4. Less iconic (though nice) for G's green (with envy) number

That dress of Loretta Young's is a nightmare.

M should stick to acting, and just completely hand herself over to a good stylist. She looked great in that gold dress, but usually she doesn't. I wonder why she doesn't go for that kind of thing more often? As opposed to her usual look: aging hippy college professor who has money but doesn't really want to spend it who thinks she has a good eye but really knows nothing about fashion.

I don't know if Angie's *dress* was that iconic. Moreso, her bizarre jutting out of the leg.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 29, 2018 1:18 PM |
Not iconic; mercifully forgotten. It should be iconic though, for all the wrong reasons:

The problem with a lot of the clothes is that they definitely cross the border between fashion and costume.
You may as well walk into the cantina on Star Wars or be watching the Hunger Games in the capital.

That's the whole point; the fantasy of it.

Sharon Stone’s breathtaking Oscar dress in 1994. She was so beautiful. She dressed like a 1930s glamorous movie star.

r25, I know it was the 90s but damn is that dress frumpy looking. I'm sure it was very easy for girls to imitate that look on their sewing machines.

I love Chloe Sevigny's black dress @ Oscars 2000

I hate Chet's goddamn guts with a passion, but she has irritatingly good abs.
I loved Blanchett's Galliano dress. It was my favourite.

Don't remember the year but I do recall turning on the tv and the Entertainment Tonight gang was tsking about Kim Basinger in this wacky number. Someone else wore a bustle and biker shorts, forgotten who. I actually miss the days when stars dressed themselves and you could always count on someone wearing a getup by the House of WTF. It might not have helped their careers but it made for high entertainment.

R37, it wasn't iconic at all. And she was drunk/high as fuck, hence the silly leg stunt.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 30, 2018 2:50 AM |
R46, that dress was a game-changer. People ooh-ed and aah-ed and it marked the point when actresses stopped showing up in their off-the-rack gowns and started consulting stylists to put them up in high-end designer fashions.

OP that was Cher at the 1986 Oscars (not 1988), when she wasn't nominated for Mask and she wanted to create a splash with her "inappropriate" outfit.
For Cher at the 1988 Oscars, see r13.

Madonna’s Golden Globes getup from when she won for Évita. It’s memorable not because it’s anything particularly interesting, but because she had recently given birth to Lourdes. I remember it because Joan Rivers praised the dress and how becomingly Madge had stuffed her “lactating jugs” into it.

How could anyone forget the dress that made Elizabeth Hurley a star, the Versace safety pin dress. It also brought a lot of attention to Hugh Grant.

GOOP's dress was a disaster. It was obviously influenced by Grace Kelly's but it just looked a mess. Like an ill-fitting off-the-rack prom dress.

Blanchette was never interested much in clothing before, but the Galliano number caused a sensation and turned her into an overnight fashion icon. I do think the Uma dress from 1995 is wonderful too.
The Liz Hurley dresses looks horrible and tacky today.

This was a favorite--Marion Cotillard in Gaultier the eyar she won the Oscar for "La Vie en Rose." Love the drama the fish scale pattern creates.

This one likely isn’t iconic in the minds of many, but for me Drew Barrymore’s LBD worn to the Moving Picture Ball at the 1989 Oscars stands out for its sweet simplicity.
To some it may look plain or basic (I don’t believe it was designer) but in my eyes Barrymore’s cocktail number for that night looked just as fresh & youthful as she did, with a little gothic twist to signify what was to come. She kept her look relaxed & uncluttered, which I like, and her natural hair & makeup added to the easy sophistication. Teenage actresses these days never dare to look so casual.
I also remember reading a bizarre conspiracy article about it written sometime in the late ‘90s, where a zealous MK/U believer broke down every element of Drew’s dress (and the ill-fitting, chintzy tux of her then-beau Corey Feldman) and related it to mind-control symbolism. I didn’t believe it but haven’t forgotten it; I suppose as it spoiled my liking for the LBD.
