Gay Pride. NYC. 1985

I saw this on a NYC Facebook nostalgia page and thought some here might be interested to see it.

I'm not sure why they're all wearing the same clothes.

Where are the Trannies?

by Anonymousreply 2January 24, 2018 1:11 AM

NB - Quite a few VERY VPLs.

by Anonymousreply 3January 24, 2018 1:11 AM

I wonder whether any of the young men in that photo survived the AIDS crisis and are still alive today?

by Anonymousreply 4January 24, 2018 1:22 AM

everyone's hangin' to the right R3

by Anonymousreply 5January 24, 2018 1:24 AM

The Boneyard Boys

by Anonymousreply 6January 24, 2018 1:35 AM

is this GMHC ? They guy 2nd from the left looks very familiar.

by Anonymousreply 7January 24, 2018 1:41 AM

They look hotter to me than any of the ab-zombies on Grindr.

by Anonymousreply 8January 24, 2018 1:43 AM

The third guy from the left wearing glasses has a GMC pin on. The Gay Men's Chorus? I can't make out the logo they have on their shirts.

by Anonymousreply 9January 24, 2018 1:45 AM

Before the Muscle Mary Era.

Gays in general, if they went to the gym, they went to keep fit. Not do all sorts of weird shit with their bodies.

by Anonymousreply 10January 24, 2018 1:49 AM

Agreed with R3 - bulgefest.

by Anonymousreply 11January 24, 2018 1:49 AM

They sandpapered the jeans crotch.

by Anonymousreply 12January 24, 2018 1:52 AM

I love those 80s bulges.

by Anonymousreply 13January 24, 2018 2:46 AM

NORMAL, and more appealing guys, than the ones you see today. Just regular guys. Not narcissists.

by Anonymousreply 14January 24, 2018 6:26 PM

R14 as an elder, I think today's men look fantastic(women don't)! I never saw that many hotties back in the day. They are ubiquitous these days, although some are a bit too "swole" for my tastes. All in all ,I approve this message. .

by Anonymousreply 15January 24, 2018 6:30 PM

[quote]NORMAL, and more appealing guys, than the ones you see today. Just regular guys. Not narcissists.

The vanity and self-obsession today, is horrible.

by Anonymousreply 16January 24, 2018 6:43 PM

How many of these guys did the towel dance?

Answer = Zero.

The millennials can fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 17January 24, 2018 6:46 PM

(Shame on you, R6!)

by Anonymousreply 18January 24, 2018 7:01 PM

A dear friend of mine is in the front row. He died of AIDS in 1989.

(Actually, you can barely see us, but my boyfriend (now my husband) and I are also in the photo, about 3 rows behind him.)

As for the clothing, at the time every gay community in major US and European cities had a “clone” look. We didn’t see ourselves as clones then, any more than do the youth of today. Nonetheless, one could readily identify a visitor to NYC, and often be fairly certain of their home city, by their dress. The truth is, what is the trend today will almost always be seen as clone-like tomorrow. Very much like today’s twinks will morph onto tomorrow’s eldergays, in the blink of an eye... if they’re lucky enough to live that long.

by Anonymousreply 19January 24, 2018 10:37 PM

[quote]As for the clothing, at the time every gay community in major US and European cities had a “clone” look.

That was the clone look of 1985?

Surely it wasn't as cloney as that? They were dressed exactly the same for a reason, non? They came from the same organization or something.

by Anonymousreply 21January 24, 2018 10:45 PM

The “clone key” is seen in the jeans (though I’m surprised not to see a few button-flys) and footwear, R21. However, essentially the same shirt, sans logo, could be found, by the dozen, in every young gay man’s dresser, alongside a stack of T-shirts, generally in black, charcoal, light grey and white.... not that we didn’t discard our shirts at every conceivable opportunity.

from the Army & Navy on the next corner from this photo - just out of view.

I still don't remember gays being THIS uniform. I was there too. Living on Carmine Street.

by Anonymousreply 23January 24, 2018 11:10 PM

There was a time when Levis 501's and Lacoste shirts (later, Polo shirts) was indeed the "gay uniform." It was common for gay men to wear 501's with the bottom button unbuttoned and to have a visible bulge.

by Anonymousreply 24January 24, 2018 11:38 PM

I remember it was 501s , Lacoste and Nikes

by Anonymousreply 25January 24, 2018 11:45 PM

I had many Levi 501s. & of course, I let them get holey at the knee.

In more modern times, you could buy them already looking old and worn out and dirty even. Weird.

by Anonymousreply 26January 24, 2018 11:54 PM

It’s a photo of the NYC Gay Men’a Chorus.

Wow. Amazing picture. I wonder if gay people then would be disappointed in gay people today—the closet still dominates. “Gay” is going away...the closet still permeates and excuses for it. Despite AIDS and Reagan, the 80s (and 70s) seemed like a great time to live as a gay person because there was so much empowerment. Not so much today.

by Anonymousreply 29January 25, 2018 12:30 AM

If Reagan had given a speech in 1982 when it was still called GRID, that would have done more to make the public think all gay men — and only gay men — can or will get it.

by Anonymousreply 30January 25, 2018 12:31 AM

I don't agree with a single word R29 has said.

by Anonymousreply 31January 25, 2018 12:45 AM

If I were the age I am now in 1985 (I'm 34; I was 2 then), I'd be lucky and happy to still be alive today.

by Anonymousreply 32January 25, 2018 12:48 AM

You could have chosen not to act on your same-sex attraction. Is a jolly trip to the bathhouse really worth dying for?

by Anonymousreply 33January 25, 2018 7:00 PM

Does being an ill informed, bigoted cunt make your life worth living, R33?

by Anonymousreply 34January 25, 2018 7:04 PM

R19 is right. I partnered with an aging twink in my late 20s (he was already 30). He is a sweet man, but so insecure, as his identity was so tied into being young and desirable. He has sought therapy and is doing well, but hark, lads, it's a hard time when it catches up with you. All the fillers and reps in the world won't preserve you forever.

by Anonymousreply 35January 25, 2018 7:08 PM

[quote]I wonder whether any of the young men in that photo survived the AIDS crisis and are still alive today?

I immediately teared up a bit when watching the photo thinking how many of them died.

by Anonymousreply 36January 25, 2018 7:08 PM

and not one morbid obese in sight! Those were the days!

by Anonymousreply 37January 25, 2018 7:24 PM

I'm thinking they are all dead unfortunately. They already look sick.

by Anonymousreply 38January 25, 2018 7:45 PM

Fior God's sake - you can see the shirts are a uniform, they all have badges on them. They look like crowns.

by Anonymousreply 39January 25, 2018 7:48 PM

And, another ignorant and homophobic thread to block.

by Anonymousreply 40January 25, 2018 8:18 PM

How is it homophobic?? Serious question.

Ain't that the truth, gurl.

R40 is insane or doesn't know posts from threads.
