I just checked (my family is in Alaska) - 8.2 earthquake in Alaska has caused this, and there is also a tsunami warning for all of Alaska's south-central coast.

But Monterey is far south of SF, why wouldn't a wave arrive first in SF?

Unlike my own family, who live on the south-central coast. It arrives in ten minutes there and I have been trying to call my mom to wake her up there, and she is not picking up. Hopefully she is just asleep. The house is a mile from the beach, sloping upward with a bluff.
