It was a MISTAKE? How come we haven’t had this kind of mistake happen before the incompetent Trump administration took over.
Imagine the panic this can cause.

Your'e living in Hawaii for gods sake... stop the whining. What's a little fallout when the rest of us are freezing to death.

The Ruling Class like to keep us living in fear. They can get away with more shit that way. "They contrive to frighten us" as Morrissey might say.
Unless some despotic leader really wanted to blow up Hawaii because he didn't like one of the reruns of 'Hawaii 5 O'.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 13, 2018 6:40 PM |
I'm here in Hawaii. A little after 8AM, our cell phones started going crazy with the alert. Overhead, jet planes were deployed. It was surreal because it's a beautiful, clear day with birds chirping.
One news channel repeated the warning, with no details. Twitter was the only place where I was able to find any information.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 13, 2018 6:41 PM |
Seriously people were running and crying? Go down with dignity people
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 13, 2018 6:41 PM |
I'll take wind and rain over a nuclear bomb any day.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 13, 2018 6:41 PM |
That’s actually terrifying, R31.
Forgive my cynicism but I suspect this is just a test for a Kremlin grid takeover.

I wouldn't put anything past Kim Jong Un. He is not a reasonable human being. Sadly neither is our leader right now.

BTW, on Saturdays, we have only one live local news show on TV (KITV). The news anchor is ex-American Idol twink Jordan Segundo. Nice to look at, but I would hate to have him as the only reliable source of streaming news of this magnitude.
It's 8:45AM, and they just alerted us on the emergency warning system that it was a false alarm.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 13, 2018 6:48 PM |

Insanity that it took them that long to tell people it is a false alarm. Not everyone stalks twitter for info.

If any country starts World War 3 it will be the United States (especially with nutcase Trump at the helm).
It was a Russian who bravely refused orders to press the button during the Cold War. We all owe a massive debt of gratitude to unsung hero VASILY ARKHIPOV.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | January 13, 2018 7:09 PM |
It's one way to distract from Trump's shithole remark in the news. Nothing would surprise me.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | January 13, 2018 7:11 PM |
Nobody is talking about shitholes and porn stars anymore, are they? Now the conversation will become how terrifying this was for America and how we can't live with this fear so we must strike first.

by Anonymous | reply 71 | January 13, 2018 7:16 PM |
r70 Woah woah woah I wouldn't call them smart, It doesn't take much brains to trip a system, and I doubt Trump profits off scaring the American people.

Lol so they scared the crap out of hawaii's residents to deflect from Trump's shittiness?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 13, 2018 7:17 PM |
To me it reads as more or less a tacit threat from Trump — stop exposing my obvious treason or I will start a thermonuclear war!
by Anonymous | reply 74 | January 13, 2018 7:17 PM |
Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, tweeted “it was a false alarm based on human error. There is nothing more important to Hawaii than professionalizing and fool-proofing this process."
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 13, 2018 7:18 PM |
The fact that this happened in Hawaii, which has been concerned that NK missiles could reach the islands, is cause for alarm.
I'm the one who saw a false alarm in MO back in the 1970s and no one was concerned because it didn't make sense for MO to get bombed. Hawaii sadly is a target again. Very unnerving.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 13, 2018 7:19 PM |
Not good enough, Brian. How did it happen? Who ordered it? Who has the power to order such a warning, and who has universal access to all iPhones?

by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 13, 2018 7:21 PM |
Bet this proves to be hackers from a "foreign country" trying to stir some shit. Something like this ought to jar people and make them realize that the fact that this administration has totally ignored the cyber threats that have been covered in the media for the past three years or more, and have done nothing to fight back and protect us,while it has been reported that Russia is busy and openly going about the hacking attacks with renewed vigor?
We need to impeach, try, and convict this piece of shit Traitor NOW! And get rid of the fuckers in Congress who supported him. Because no matter whether or not they get their come to Jesus moment and have an 11th hour conversion and suddenly decide to do the right thing, they have allowed this living pile of excrement to soil himself all over us for too long. Shit. An hour would be too long. All of them need to go. And I'd have the fucking Koch Brothers charged with Treason. Mercers too.

by Anonymous | reply 86 | January 13, 2018 7:25 PM |
According to a December 2017 piece by CNN, it is very difficult to trigger the emergency system accidentally:
“The attack warning siren test will be triggered from inside the 6-feet-thick concrete walls of a civil defense bunker nestled under the rock and dirt of the Diamond Head volcano crater, near Honolulu on the island of Oahu.”
by Anonymous | reply 87 | January 13, 2018 7:25 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 91 | January 13, 2018 7:28 PM |
I'm not so much of a conspiracy theorist to think that the WH wanted this "false alarm," but I would bet that the fatboss tweets to capitalize on it in a matter of hours, if not minutes.
Fucking false alarms on this level should not happen. It is not like a fake bomb threat called in to a school on final exam day (which happens somewhere in every state, every year)
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 13, 2018 7:29 PM |
I wonder if that person posting he had a “bad feeling” yesterday about something big coming was posting from Honolulu.

Not just Hawaii. They did it to scare the whole country. "What if it wasn't a mistake? What if it was real? What if the US launched missiles based on a false alarm? We'd all be dead. Who did this? How did they do it? Why did it take 18 minutes (or however long it took) to notify everyone it's a false alarm? Who's in charge of sending those alarms? Could Russia have hacked not the civil defence system?"

by Anonymous | reply 102 | January 13, 2018 7:37 PM |

Lots of other Pittsburghers here. We should have a meet.
The fighter jets scare the shit out of me, too, but then I have to remind myself -- They're "practicing" for their flyover of the football game. Because fuckin' Steelers are worth terrifying the population over.
Goddamn yinzer douchebags.

Here's a thought: What if higher ups in the intelligence or military community did this to show the man in charge that he can't be so impulsive when it comes to NK?
by Anonymous | reply 119 | January 13, 2018 7:58 PM |
Wow, what a coincidence in timing, r118. Do they do these flyover often? I know about the fireworks, but the flyover was a first for me.

Amazing that our fucking President who lives to tweet could not be bothered to interrupt his golfing to tweet about this.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 13, 2018 8:00 PM |
According to MSNBC, there is no way that this was a test because the button is in a bunker behind 6-ft-thick walls, with people specifically trained to push the button ONLY if and when they receive a call from Pacific Command. So either it was hacked, it was intentional, or there was a real belief that a missile was inbound.
Is it possible that a real missile was intercepted by THAAD, but the military is trying its damnedest to keep it under wraps in an attempt to avoid an escalation?
by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 13, 2018 8:01 PM |
r122 Trump wants to be a great military leader, no way he passes on a chance if a real missle came inbounds. They wouldn't cover it up.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | January 13, 2018 8:03 PM |
If the emergency alert is network connected, which it would have to be, it's susceptible to hacking. This could have been human error or it could be that. I'm sure we will find out soon what happened. No system is 100% foolproof, to everyone posting above saying it must be perfect, that's not possible.
That being said, who cares? You can't do anything if a nuclear missile is headed your way, so why stress over it and freak out? As I get older I worry less and less about this stuff.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | January 13, 2018 8:05 PM |

[quote]R122 Trump wants to be a great military leader, no way he passes on a chance if a real missle came inbounds. They wouldn't cover it up.
No, not Trump, R124. USPACOM. The military is well aware of what Trump's impulse would be, and I'm hoping some Admiral somewhere would have the sense to cover it up, at least in the short term, to avoid Armageddon.

by Anonymous | reply 129 | January 13, 2018 8:12 PM |
This is a false alarm. It has already been confirmed. Y'all dumb asses need to learn to do some simple Google research before believing something on any social media site. No wonder Trump got elected.

That should fill you with joy R129!
by Anonymous | reply 131 | January 13, 2018 8:14 PM |
Apparently Governor Ige of Hawaii KNEW it was a false alarm almost immediately, but did not issue a retraction. Senator Brian Schatz reported that he had to call the governor TWICE and insist that a retraction be issued over the same emergency alert system. Ige was going to send out an email!
Bottom line - 38 minutes before a correction was issued.

I am sure that Putin has had control of our military satellites and energy grids for several years now. During Obama's presidency, I never understood why they weren't willing to reveal this even if it meant going to war with Russia. Obviously, Dump is never going to go to war with Russia. I do wonder, however, if the current situation might lead to someone high up in military intelligence spilling the beans as a means of dethroning Dump.

What kind of shelter works for a missile threat?
by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 13, 2018 10:04 PM |
r158 I seriously doubt the leaders in Hawaii had anything to do with this. I also doubt Trump had anything to do with this, except possibly by not ramping up counterintelligence and defending the nation's networks and aging infrastructure. He's too busy passing Republican dream bills that are all about making him and their donors wealthier.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | January 13, 2018 10:04 PM |
Actually, it may very well be Trump's fault, now that I read this:
"It is unclear how or why the initial alert was sent out, and how many people received it. Wireless emergency alerts are usually dispatched during critical emergency situations and are a partnership between the Federal Communications Commission, FEMA and the wireless industry. Shortly after the false alarm, FCC chairman Ajit Pai said the commission was launching an investigation into what happened."
by Anonymous | reply 161 | January 13, 2018 10:07 PM |
I am thinking hawaii was hacked and they would rather blame human error than alarm people with how easily they could be hacked!
by Anonymous | reply 162 | January 13, 2018 10:07 PM |

And this bitch immediately shifts any possible blame to the state:
On Saturday, deputy White House press secretary Lindsay Walters said President Trump had been briefed on the situation. She added that it was “purely a state exercise.”
Maybe she should wait and see how it happened.

As someone said above, it’s one of three possibilities — hacking, purposeful enactment or a missile really was on the way but was contained.
Also, it was not just phone text messages, the emergency notice was broadcast over television as well. This to me suggests options 1 or 3.

I would have freaked if I were in Hawaii and got that message! A missile strike from NK certainly feels plausible at the moment.
I know that no system is foolproof and maybe they're telling the truth about an employee having sent it accidentally, but why did it take so long to clarify that it was a mistake? I wonder if it was the result of a hacking.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | January 13, 2018 10:59 PM |
FEMA is really just a central resources management agency for coordinating emergency services, R182. State and local agencies are always going to provide the first response.
They don't actually provide food or shelter or get the power back on or provide security--that would be the Red Cross/National Guard/various contractors. They're not dispatchers remotely triggering missile sirens, they're paper pushers. They might push those papers faster than most federal bodies but that's still their basic function.

Meanwhile "The President" hasn't even bothered to issue a response. Except to tweet bashing Democrats an hour ago.
They trashed W. for waiting five minutes to do something on 9/11, yet it's been almost FIVE HOURS since this false alarm and he has DONE NOTHING.
If this isn't "Dereliction of duty" and an impeachable offense, I don't know what is.

by Anonymous | reply 188 | January 13, 2018 11:16 PM |
If military got the alarm 20 minutes earlier than means it was a genuine scare and not an accident. You don’t accidentally push that button once and alert the military, then push it a second time to alert the public 20 minutes later, then wait another 37 minutes to tell the public it was a “mistake”.

[quote]Ray Gerst was vacationing on Oahu with his wife to celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary. Just as they pulled up for their tour of Kualoa Ranch, they received the alert.“All the buses stopped, and people came running out of the ranch and said, ‘Just sit still for a minute, nobody get off the bus, nobody get off the bus,’” he said. They were taken into the mountains, Mr. Gerst said, and dropped off at a concrete bunker. They sheltered in place for about 15 minutes, he said, during which time they had no cell signal. “It was scary,” Mr. Gerst said. “I mean, there was no intel.”

The military were already aware that the origin of the threat was actually a black bean burrito bowl consumed by a Gunners Mate Second Class at the Taco del Mar in the JB Pearl Hickam Exchange Complex, R210. Unfortunately, by the time it was established that GM2 posed no danger beyond the immediate environs of Van Valkenburg Avenue, news of the concussions and subsequent alarms (actually a CO2 alarm in nearby base housing) were already all over Twitter.

Which is the wrong attitude, something simple as standing behind a door, or pulling a curtain can stop the nuclear flash and save you from burns. Even in Hiroshima, which saw about 78,000 killed in all, had over 400,000 people in 1945, which means 83% of the people there lived.
You need to be informed.

Yes NK's last test was estimated to have a yield of up to 140kt, about 10x the power of the Hiroshima bomb. But they probably have yet to miniaturize the design to place atop a missile.

I had a dream Friday night, really Saturday morning that there was a nuclear war.
I was outside, looking up at the clouds with a friend, in an area like a beach and a field or park - a large wide-open space. All of a sudden we saw a coming out of the clouds a fighter jet that dropped a bomb which was coming down, landing toward us. It was coming down so quickly we didn't have time to run anywhere and when it landed I was wondering if I was dead or alive. Then I woke up. (And then posted on DL, of course: See link).
It scared me because it was such a realistic and scary dream and also scared me a bit because I have had a few precognitive dreams

Are TPTB so insane they want a nuclear war?
by Anonymous | reply 266 | January 14, 2018 7:32 PM |
Yes R266 they imagine they're all going to be safe in their luxury bunkers and then emerge like Gods when the fallout clears into a beautiful de-populated paradise.

There's a story I tell in the book about George Stephanopoulos when he was at the Clinton White House. And Aaron Sorkin, when he was doing the research for what became "The West Wing" and "The American President," was meeting with Stephanopoulos. Stephanopoulos pulls out this little evacuation card that Aaron Sorkin originally thinks is a bus pass only to realize that it's actually, you know, George Stephanopoulos' get-out-of-nuclear-war-free card.
And then when Aaron Sorkin incorporates this into a "West Wing" episode where the deputy chief of staff, Josh Lyman, gets one of these cards from the National Security Council, Dee Dee Myers, who was the press secretary at the time - the White House press secretary at the time - pulls Aaron Sorkin aside on the set and says, you know, Aaron, I think that this is crazy that you're doing this because these cards don't actually exist. And Aaron Sorkin realizes in that moment that Dee Dee Myers, who worked alongside George Stephanopoulos in the White House, never realized that she was not going to be saved in an evacuation but that George Stephanopoulos was.

Hawaii is a blue state and coughed up Barack Obama so no, The Dumpster doesn't give a rip about our state. I'm surprised he hasn't farted out a negative tweet about shitholes again.

One more reason to love Nicolle W:
She just showed the new cover of Germany's Der Speigel magazine.
Some of these magazine and newspaper cover artists are getting very creative and clever in their mocking. It must result in tantrums in the WH.

Can you imagine in the 80s if someone came up to you and said: "In the future, everyone carries a phone with them at all time. People even sleep with them. Diana Ross got scared when she was rushed into the hotel basement when everyone in Hawaii got a message on the phone that a nuclear missile was headed for Hawaii. People were angry because President Donald Trump did not send a message on the phone but he took time to comment on a book that called him 'dumb as shit.'"
