The Juicy Couture tracksuit AND the ironed hair AND the skinny crochet scarf in one coke addled package.

What bothered me the most was that people in the US were at their very fattest, yet you had all of these hipster type pants, which meant if you didn't have a iron flat stomach, it looked bad. Can't believe how long these low waisted slacks were a thing.

The 80s made Z. Cavaricci, Vuarnet & Body Glove. Remember Chess King & Merry Go Round? Yeah.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 10, 2018 2:38 PM |
How much of that was adopted by the masses though the way 70s and 80s fashion was?
I watch Friends now (okay once, not regularly) and the clothes and hairstyles in the later seasons, after Aniston got rid of "the Rachel" don't look dramatically different than what people wear today. A little looser, especially for the guys, but not that dramatic.

I've seen people wear distressed jeans and bustier tops consistently over the years. I really hate what are obviously intentionally distressed jeans. They just look stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 11, 2018 6:02 PM |
After the 90's, styles starts to blur together for me, except for the obvious tragedies like Kelly's jeansdresses and high-contrast, chunky highlights.
Also popular were orange spray tans, excessive hair extensions, comical platform shoes that gave women Miss Piggy feet and the word "Juicy" emblazoned across women's butts, which made me associate the wearer with diarrhea.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 11, 2018 6:07 PM |
No worse than any other decade in fashion. Someone should post those pics of people in a New Jersey mall in 1990, and how everyone looked like cave people with late 80s big hair.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 12, 2018 3:14 AM |
I don't see much of a difference in today's fashion compared to the early-mid-00s.
Let's see -- boot cut pants have been replaced by straight leg/skinny pants. Black and white sneakers are de rigueur Boots, boots, boots. And the boots are pointy toed. I went to a funeral recently and saw the first pair of square toed boots since 2002. It was an oldster who is too cheap to buy new boots. Tights, jeggings, dresses as shirts.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 12, 2018 3:28 AM |
R30, of course, commits the usual sins of illiteracy that cunts usually offend us with as they pretend to bleed down their legs in outrage, with a ketchup bottle in their purses.
I see four errors and three additional dubious usages and questionable rhetorical cliches.
Amanda is "genuinely very funny" and "has seen it all" and therefore "does not need" CENSURE!
What a cunt. The type that wishes she "actually" had a pussy so she could claim someone tried to grab it.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 12, 2018 3:29 AM |
I'm not sure but I think people wore pointy shoes in the late 90s/early 2000s too, R47. People are wearing boot cut jeans again I think along with skinny jeans.

R50, I agree that Christian Siriano and Chloe Dao have fashion lines. But they are not successful in the same sense that Alexander McQueen or Thierry Mugler are. Please cite designers from Project Runway who have achieved that level of success. After, this is what was promised by Heidi Klum.

R46, advances in fashion, music, and even politics have always come from younger people, not older ones.
This is not a situation where an older group has control over a younger one. Instead, we're all looking for the younger generation to step up to the plate and blaze a trail into the next societal trends. As a baby boomer, I was thrilled to death by GenX's move into punk and new wave. We haven't seen anything like that since.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 12, 2018 4:08 AM |

Uggs are one long-lasting trend though. You still see middle school girls in Brentwood and the Upper East Side sporting them, maybe not as frequently as 15 years ago, but if they're still a thing in those places, I'm guessing they're still a thing in less trendy precincts as well.

In OP’s example, it’s piquant & amusing that La Lohan is the only one wearing sensible slingbacks & a well-fitted bra. She looks almost office-ready, it’s a clean look.
Hilary Duff has always had a strange magnetism, and it shows here. Her curvacious self clad in the most shoddy plastic cuts & fabrics and highlighted brassy as can be still catches the eye. She looks cute in anything. Is it pure confidence?
It’s quite a disturbing cover, and one wonders exactly who it was targeted to.

R66 I was convinced that Chester Bennington’s sad & sudden death last year would bring nu-metal culture & style roaring back into retro fashion as is the wont these days.
This has not yet happened, so I suppose the 20-year rule abides. Give it 5 years and everyone will again be sporting gelled spikes & ICP-size baggy jeans with wallet-chains.

R71 wear what you like. My opinion is that trends are generally stupid, but older people should definitely NEVER follow them unless they actually like the trend. It's not ageism. I think at a certain age it becomes even more pathetic to blindly follow trends. It seems like you know what you don't like; figure out what you do like (of course, maybe you already do).

As far as having healthy contemporary careers, the placement of the three center girls was prescient. Moore(This is Us), Duff (Younger), and Bledel (strong performance in A Handmaid’s Tale). None of those ladies should be disappointed with where they are at the moment.

It’s incredible how fast the Emo-twink/diesel fashion for kids has aged.
Flat-ironed peek-a-bangs, Chucks, studded belts, messenger bags & long plaid shirts were uniform for gay teens a decade ago. For a long time it seemed like every gay or misfit kid had bleached or color-streaked ‘anime’ hair and some sort of acid-gothic-preppy combo attire. It was like a gay club style mixed with an awkward 80s hipster wardrobe and run through the Valley.
I have no idea what the babygays all wear now but it’s not that passé indie style.

The hair on men & women was sleeker & more styled back then, I’ll give it that.

And everyone trying to thrust their piggy little HOCKS into strappy sandals. It made their legs, hips, and asses look enormous.

R163 Yeah they were pretty cute back in the day. I don't know why they bothered getting nose jobs. Unless it was from all the coke? And I think we can put most of the blame on Lilo's parents for her downfall. In Amanda's case i think DS had a lot to do with it.

There was a lot of skin on the red carpet.
Either plunging necklines or transparent piecing.

At least with the hipsters of the 2010s, they st least try to dress themselves. People in the 2000s looked like white trash. It was anti-fashion, just rolled out of bed, let me go outside in pajama bottoms.

Call me crazy, but I love the transparency look when its done tastefully like in R167. If your young and beautiful and have a flawless body,of course.

[quote] Remember the cropped shrug cardigan?
I was a high-schooler in the late '00s, and I can't forget it because it's all over my fucking yearbook.
The bully girls at my HS were into a Western variation of the 'kogal'/'gyaru' ('gal') look, which basically means you do big ratty hair & pancake makeup in the biggest sloppiest way possible to the point it scares people then behave in a loud abrasive manner to match. You also need the darkest tanner and the biggest designer tote bag and the shortest skirts you can find if you're going to class (could even tie up your school shirt to show off that belly-button piercing), then tight leisurewear and crop/spaghetti tube tops to change into for clubbing after (maybe with a blingy pendant). Uggs, aforementioned shrugs and leggings get you A to B. It was a Pineapple dance studios-cum-Paris Hilton-cum whoever-was-big-in-reality-TV-that year look. Interestingly the girls wearing it were the ones who had the money to dress in Vogue/Gossip Girl-esque fashion if they wanted yet they chose to dress like delinquents. I guess it does make sense in retrospect.
Thinking back on it, though, clothes don't make the woman. I knew cruel bitchy MGs who wore emo/goth, hipster, chic and street styles as well as the Plastics - the latter style has just aged the worst, I think.

I say bring back neo-disco. I’m bored of grey and wool and catalogue-everything.

I am sooo guilty of having worn this hideous crap. Especially the low rise jeans, cropped tops, and velour track suits.
But at least I had a BANGING body, and I got all of the superficial attention I sought out. Yes, I hang my head in shame. But my ass and abs were on POINT. All real, all natural, no butt implants or lipo.
I still have a pretty decent body, and I give credit to that moment in tawdry fashion history, for making me a dedicated gym attendee.

Idk if many of the fashions listed here from '01/'02 can really be considered "'00s fashion" at all. Trends don't strictly alter at the start or end of every decade like clockwork. Personally I couldn't notice any perceptible shift in Western cultural style away from '90s staples until we hit 2005, particularly in fashion & music, and imho there's negligible difference between the look and sound and attires of 1997-8 and 2001-2.
It's the same this decade around, where only in the last few years (around 2016 onward) has anything significantly changed or evolved from the '00s in terms of trends or artistic styles. Think back; objectively examining the way people dressed and talked and made art, 2013-4 may as well have been 2009-10.

Wrong, R186. The cargo pants and skater-wear-as-fashion that ruled 1997-1999 were long gone by 2001.
The baggy look of the Nineties gave way to a more streamlined look for men as early as 2001. By 2002, Men's clothing was much more fitted and neat.
Women's fashion changed hugely with the advent of trouser pants (2001-2002) that were not seen in the Late Nineties. Stripes were much more prominent for women starting in 2000.
Denim??? Goodbye lighter washes and looser styles! 2001 was all about darker denim and fitted pieces.
2000 to 2005 is distinctly different from the Late Nineties. 2006 would hold over some looks but veer off wildly in other directions as well. 2000 to 2005 is its own entity.
