What is Carol Burnett doing these days?
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 13, 2018 12:32 AM |
She is almost age 85, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 3, 2018 12:57 AM |
What does that have to do with anything?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 3, 2018 12:58 AM |
Even in those Time Life commercials, you can see that everything is slower, timing, movement, even her thought process for her lines.
She should stay retired.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 3, 2018 12:59 AM |
Escorting
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 3, 2018 1:00 AM |
When did she retire? And why shouldn’t she work if she wants to?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 3, 2018 1:00 AM |
She tried several different new follow-up comedy series after The Carol Burnett Show. They all failed. The kind of success of the original Carol Burnett Show couldn't be repeated because younger audiences didn't appreciate her kind of humor anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 3, 2018 1:07 AM |
But she could do a sitcom.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 3, 2018 1:08 AM |
Why was the blonde from "2 Broke Girls" on Carol's 50th Anniverary show?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 3, 2018 1:10 AM |
I'm sick of her. Can't enjoy anything she ever did. Don't know why, don't care.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 3, 2018 1:35 AM |
She seems like a nice lady but I think the best she could do now is play a sassy grandmother on a minor sitcom. And even then she would probably delivery 90% of her lines from the sofa.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 3, 2018 1:39 AM |
There was a rumour she was going to play Mama Morton in Chicago.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 3, 2018 1:42 AM |
The other 10% of her lines would be delivered over her shoulder as she walks from the sofa to the kitchen.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 3, 2018 1:54 AM |
Hello Dolly! after Bernadette.

BI: what former tv has-been comedienne is now desperate for cash? She had a successful variety show on CBS for years. This is no Christmas Carol... She made the wrong people mad and now She allegedly gives blowjobs down by the railroad tracks for $2 In her 'Unique' country bumpkin costume, which She is famous for. If you want more it costs a bit more, For an extra dollar, she will take out her false teeth And give you a gum job! For $5 she will call a friend of yours on your cellie And mess with them or leave them a message in Your favorite character's voice She gives it away for free if you have a good joke that She can steal for her new series on Netflix.
BI WILL BE REVEALED IN SEVERAL WEEKS (or possibly months, meh possibly never)
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 3, 2018 2:12 AM |
She had the last really successful, long running variety show and that ended how many years ago? That was a big sign that her time had come and past.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 3, 2018 2:22 AM |
Couldn't she be on Blackish?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 3, 2018 2:27 AM |
Whys should she be on Blackish or anything else.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 3, 2018 2:30 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 3, 2018 2:32 AM |
Is she breaking up any more happy homes?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 3, 2018 3:20 AM |
I've just never found her that funny outside her variety show. It was tailored to her. I mean, she's a good performer, and a seemingly nice enough person, but she kind of pushes too hard.
She writes autobiographies now, and does then does the books-on-tape versions. And she did some show for years where she toured around and people asked her questions.
She had a full career, and that's it.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 3, 2018 6:02 AM |
I often wonder if the nut who hates Carol Burnett for being a "homewrecker" is the same mentally disturbed person who hates Jessica Lange, loves Faye Dunaway, and hates Elaine Stritch.
That would mean I could just loathe one person instead of 3.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 3, 2018 6:11 AM |
She still does her tour where she tells stories and answers questions. I am sure she makes good coin from those shows.
She was here in Toronto in October.
Anderson and Andy will be at the same venue. Unbelievable.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 3, 2018 6:26 AM |
[quote] But she could do a sitcom.
She was the original choice to play Penny on "The Big Bang Theory", but bailed at the last minute.

Well, realistically, there's a lot us suspects for those posts...she really was a crotchety, staggering, braying old sea lion.

Is the blind item...
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 3, 2018 7:05 AM |
Over-rated and homely. Mother Harper was her only funny character.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 3, 2018 8:40 AM |
Why are some of you acting like she should be put out to pasture just because of her age? She looked great on Stephen Colbert. Seemed in great health. Why quit just because she’s old? So much ageism!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 3, 2018 4:04 PM |
“Put out to pasture?” “Quit”?
She’s working exactly the amount she wants to work. Why are you judging her personal choices?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 3, 2018 4:12 PM |
She's trying to convince Betty White to do a national tour of "The Whales of August."
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 3, 2018 4:48 PM |
She did an Amy Poehler-produced pilot for ABC last spring called Household Name.
I would much rather ABC picked that up, instead of Roseanne "Trump is the Greatest President Ever and Democrats are Pedophiles/Anti-Semitic" Barr's sitcom reboot.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 3, 2018 5:14 PM |
How do you know, R30?

I just reject the idea that because someone is 85 that they’re “at death’s door” and should go away. People are always celebrating youth and putting down wisdom and experience.

Because most people are dead by 85 or about to die - they're not launching new TV series.

You're obviously frightened of your own mortality.
I think this is so of all the people on here wanting very old people to do young things, like be president etc...
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 3, 2018 11:09 PM |
I saw her 50th anniversary special and it was a rehash of everything her show is already known for. "Here we are breaking out of character!" "Here's the longest laugh Tim Conway ever got!" "Here's my Tarzan yell!" "Here's why I tug on my ear!" I don't know why I was expecting something else.
Her daughter Erin Hamilton was a fledgling dance club singer. Back in 2000, I was on line at Roxy, the inside part with all of the steps, when Carol walked right past me on her way out. That was when Roxy was hot-hot-hot. Erin was performing live, her act was done, and Carol was beating a hasty retreat out of there, all by herself.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 3, 2018 11:17 PM |
Her refusal to do full-frontal nudity limits the parts she's offered.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 3, 2018 11:17 PM |
I just watched her TWILIGHT ZONE episode, "Cavender is Coming", which is one of the dumbest episodes, story wise, but her warmth and charm sell it and make it one of my favorites from the series.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 3, 2018 11:23 PM |
In the 90s, she was escorted around town by a gay guy she met at AA.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 3, 2018 11:31 PM |
She does not live in Santa Fe anymore. She could easily be on Blackish and would be the only cast member who actually has any talent. She also could be a second banana on any other sitcom. She could have a half hour talk show. She could go on SVC and sell her wigs, tight dresses, books, ever etc. She could replace Matt on the today show. She could make Eunice The Musical with Julie, and plastic face Bernadette. She could give tarot card readings. She could be a regular on Ru Paul. She could sell Avon. She could be a cashier at Vons or Gelsons. She could work in an aids hospice. She could write kiddy books like Julie.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 3, 2018 11:47 PM |
Probably she didn’t come back to TV because she didn’t want to. Comedy is a job just like any other. She made her money, left a great legacy, and got the fuck out while the getting was good. Would you expect some quant whiz kid to keep trading after he’s already made enough to comfortably live several lives? Some do, some move on to a different things, some cash out and surf for the rest of their lives. She’s done because she wants to be, I bet.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 3, 2018 11:53 PM |
I think Carol needs to take a chair on The View. Or maybe they could do a Senior Citizens version of The View. Carol, Betty White, Faye Dunaway and Dionne Warwick. They could have a satellite hookup for when Olivia de Havilland wanted to chime in.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 3, 2018 11:57 PM |
Yes r45, TZ wasn't good at doing "warm and fuzzy". It would have been fun to have her in a macabre episode, but it has its charms. She had to have given some input to the writer, what with her being a movie usherette.

[quote]quote of the week.
Well, you don’t die of nothing! You have a heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc. And people of all ages get them, not just old people.
The only reason people nowadays have diseases is because we don’t live with nature. In the olden days, people lived naturally and then just went to be with God when they were 700 or so. There was no illness and people didn’t “just die.”

So what should she be doing? She had the last really successful variety show. She had sense enough not to do Mama's Family. She really had no business making movies and knew that after her few offers. She does the odd personal appearance and gets asked to do or present schtick on tv periodically. Not a bad way to coast along. Presumably she's financially secure.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 6, 2018 2:15 AM |
She WAS just on TV, for her CBS special that she was probably paid a pretty penny for. CBS made pissloads of money from her and owed the old bitch.
Her series with Amy Poehler appears to have fallen through.
She is supposed to be doing a Netflix thing.
She's eighty FUCKING five.

I believe that she lives in Santa Barbara. When she did her appearance/concert gig in town a few years back, she said that she and her husband, who I think is a lot younger than her, do crossword puzzles

Well, actually...a year or so after NBC canceled Mama, she called Vicki wanting to relaunch show again. However, Vicki had just signed to do the show again with Carol's ex-husband, Joe Hamilton. That caused friction between Carol and Vicki for a few years.

I always read that she first got plastic surgery during the filming of Annie. But I watched her special, and there was a big difference in how she looked in the 70s clips (which they always show) and the late 60s clips (which they never show). I mean God, she was REALLY chinless in the 60s clips.
Incidentally, why did they never rerun the first few seasons of the show? All the sketches and characters we know are from the second half of it's run.

I think the full ownership of the first 5 years are (or at least were) in legal dispute.
Did Carol pull a fast one?

[quote]Carol Burnett Sued In Dispute Over Copyright And TV Show Revenue November 21, 2012
[quote]Bob Banner Associates has filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court against Carol Burnett and her Whacko Inc. seeking an accounting of revenues from The Carol Burnett Show, spinoff show Mama’s Family (suit refers to it as Mama’s House) and reunion specials. BBA’s suit (Banner himself died in 2011) says the company and Burnett and her Whacko are co-owners of the copyrights to the first five seasons of the show. According to the suit (read it here) Banner and Burnett entered an agreement in 1967 which continued until 1972. During that time, according to BBA, closing credits identified BBA as co-owner of the copyright with Burnett. “Sometime in 1969”, the suit says, Burnett’s company Burngood Inc filed its first copyright registration solely in Burnett’s Burngood company name (later absorbed by Whacko) with no mention of BBA. The series continued until 1979. The series subsequently was edited into half-hour episodes entitled Carol Burnett And Friends. The show and reunion episodes have been distributed in syndication and via home-video licenses to Columbia House, Guthy-Renker and Time Life. The spinoff Mama’s Family also continues in syndication and home video distribution.
[quote]BBA says it has received no accounting or compensation for exploitation of the episodes in question. Additionally, according to the suit, Burnett has never clearly repudiated BBA’s co-ownership. BBA charges Burnett/Whacko with breach of fiduciary duty, unfair business practice and seeks a full accounting of revenue and profits plus damages, interest and court costs.

There are now a few1st to 3rd season full episodes on YouTube. The show was cute during those first couple of years. Burnett and the rest of the cast were charming.
But it got increasingly un-funny and brittle as the years went by. Those first episodes owe a lot to the Steve Allen Show (1956-1960).
If Burnett hadn't gone into all of the surgery, she could have aged like Mary Wickes...and she'd still be working today. But instead, she now looks like a bad car accident victim.

I've seen some of the reruns and wonder why when I was a kid did I find this show funny. Now it seems pretty horrible. Maybe it's the first few seasons I remember fondly which I haven't seen in a very long time.
Harvey Korman's and Tim Conway's schtick of breaking up is incredibly god awful and embarrassing.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | January 8, 2018 1:18 AM |
We remember the Burnett fondly because of its highlights: Eunice/Mama, Scarlett & the curtain rod, the movie parodies. There were 279 episodes made. They all couldn't be comedy gold.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | January 8, 2018 1:41 AM |
The Mama's Family sketches on the show were really dark and uncomfortable. A look at lower-class white America that seldom got such a spotlight. I grew up around families like that.
I also recently watched the Twilight Zone episode. It was indeed corny, but she was a winning presence from the get-go. Moreover, at the end, she didn't sacrifice the glamourous life for a man. In fact, there was no love interest for her at all, and that wasn't an issue. It was refreshing for its time.
Rita Moreno is the same age and just did One Day at a Time, which critics loved, especially for her.
I don't see why Carol Burnett couldn't work if she wanted to. She's still very sharp on talk shows.
I wish we didn't put people down just for being old. We'll be there one day. Maybe.
