Ed Rendell: Joe Biden Would Destroy Trump In a 2020 Presidential Race
by Anonymous | reply 406 | October 12, 2024 7:21 PM |
No, he's too fuckin' old. How about getting someone born in the last 50 years.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 2, 2018 4:09 PM |
Have they really forgotten their history? And Biden's age? God, I get so tired of stories like this.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 2, 2018 4:09 PM |
They’d lose.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 2, 2018 4:11 PM |
How would they lose? What blue state from 2016 is Trump holding onto? You think Pennsylvania votes for Trump over Biden? 😂
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 2, 2018 4:12 PM |
Rendell is old school Dem - I respect him but it's clear the electorate is in a new phase, and the "old" conventional wisdom is no longer applicable.
We need younger, dynamic and inclusive. And someone who has some serious blue collar credibility. The best candidate IMHO would be Sherrod Brown.

by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 2, 2018 4:14 PM |
Sherrod Brown is not energetic.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 2, 2018 4:16 PM |
So Trump is going to accuse Biden of being a molester?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 2, 2018 4:16 PM |
He probabaly would.

by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 2, 2018 4:19 PM |
So Joe Biden was preparing to feel up that little girl? You think the American people will buy that?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 2, 2018 4:21 PM |
[quote] Sherrod Brown is not energetic.
He's not old and farty. He's a bit old school, but he'd appeal to the millworkers/car plant workers, etc. better than most others of that age.
[quote] So Trump is going to accuse Biden of being a molester?
I don't think Biden was ever a molester, or did anything illegal, but he's definitely Uncle Touchy Feely, and that makes him a liability. I wish he'd run in 2016, but he didn't, and that's that.
If we assume he's got the nom in 2020 because he didn't do it in 2016, we have the same assumed ascension we had with Hillary. Better than a field of candidates put each other through paces and get the momentum and backing of the public. Unless we get someone who can work with our Congress, though, it's all an exercise in futility.....
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 2, 2018 4:22 PM |
I agree about Brown and that Biden is much too old. Biden would appeal to some of the older blue-collar voters, but not younger voters so much.
The only problem with Brown is that he's up for re-election this year, so he would need to vacate his Senate seat if he won a Presidential election in 2020, and OH voters would need to vote in a Democrat as governor this year (a stretch IMO) to appoint his successor.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 2, 2018 4:24 PM |
The Dems could run a celebrity but please not Clooney.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 2, 2018 4:27 PM |
The Dems still have no one. The better ones are too old and the younger ones look like slick phonies.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 2, 2018 4:27 PM |
Having dealt with Biden when I was a lobbyist in the 80s I have never liked him. He's an ass. And a not too bright ass at that. And he's not my idea of honest. But his positions on issues were mostly good and he had great, great staff working for him in his office and in committee. With his staff's help, and cooperation we achieved some very important things.
His lack of real support of Hillary during the campaign, his games about running and his indefensible insults toward her after the election leave a terrible taste in my mouth - though none of this behavior surprised me in the least.
But in the end, if he really could beat Trump then he'd have my vote - while I held my nose.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 2, 2018 4:30 PM |
The dangerous thing is that in 2020 Dems could probably run almost anyone and win, and God love 'em but the Democratic Party never really understands why candidates win. So, if they put up Joe "Plagiarism & Near Incest" Biden and he won, they would inevitably think it proves that candidates like him are a good idea.
It would be catastrophic.

Yes, he is too old (just my opinion), but he's the only democrat that can fight back verbally against trump. He would call out trump on his shit during a debate. He'd kick his ass. The rest of the luke warm dems might call trump on his shit but they sound like wimps doing it
To beat someone like trump the dems are going to need someone who can kick ass
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 2, 2018 4:34 PM |
No. No. No. No.
Someone really needs to stop Biden from running. Also calling Biden a "superstar" the guy has run for President before and always lost.
And I like Biden, but enough is enough. Retire.

The Republicans are willing to fight dirty and have been for years. It worked for them for Obama, since a portion of the country would believe any and everything they said about him without the GOP having to lift a finger.
It worked for Hillary, because they found her weaknesses (her slimy husband and history). That's why they focused on Benghazi, to keep weakening her in the eyes of the public.
They'd do it with Biden, too.
And while I liked Sanders well enough and did not get into the heated Hillary/Bernie debates, they would have done it to him, too. If Bernie had been nominated, he would not have easily sailed to victory. They would have made much of the fact that he wasn't a real democrat, that he was a socialist, and worked to weaken his credibility. Would it have worked as well as it did with Hillary? Probably, but it's impossible to know for sure.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 2, 2018 4:49 PM |
How did it work for Obama when he destroyed them at the polls twice and has been the most admired man in America for 10 years in a row?

The party’s progressive base didn’t want Hillary Clinton. Are you a Berniebro, R35?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 2, 2018 5:07 PM |
Biden is too old and has verbal gaffe disease.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 2, 2018 5:09 PM |
What presidential candidate doesn’t make gaffes? Didn’t seem to hurt Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 2, 2018 5:14 PM |
Biden would have kicked Trump's ass in 2016. Biden would have won states likes Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin. It's a shame that the party didn't pressure him into running, but the Powers That Be had decided early on that the nominee had to be Hillary. But I agree that Biden will be too old in 2020. His time has come and gone. We need a younger version of Biden -- someone younger who has Biden's talent for speaking in a plain-spoken way that resonates with working-class Midwest voters. I think we're fooling ourselves if we believe that someone like Kamala Harris or Corey Booker or Kirsten Gillibrand will appeal to factory workers or farmers in Ohio and Wisconsin. 2020 should be an easy victory for the Democrats, but I'm not sure if we have anyone who is up to the task.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 2, 2018 5:16 PM |
Biden ran for president before and couldn’t get past the primaries.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 2, 2018 5:26 PM |
Absolutely, R2. Biden has a huge ego, almost as big as Trump's, although he's not crazy. I'm also not too happy with Gillibrand, though, after what she did to Franken. Her purity tests make her too polarizing for the job as well.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 2, 2018 5:30 PM |

Well, you have a point, R30, I didn't word that quite right.
I meant more that they did serious damage to Obama's credibility - but ONLY in the eyes of a certain demographic. (most of us know that, while O wasn't perfect in every decision, he made a lot of great moves meant to improve the US long term.)
What they learned from attacking the Obamas, though, is what they have used with HRC, Liz Warren, etc to greater success.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 2, 2018 5:40 PM |
Franken should have fought back but I guess they threw him under the bus.
The Republicans have it all set up with a million hugging clips that Biden is a perv. And he will not appeal to the Bernie or SJW set.
He would not necessarily have won against Trump. In a dirty fight, the Dems always back down. There is also big internet-fueled and decades of inequality-fueled disgust with establishment politicians.

[quote] The Democratic party needs to stop throwing shit at their actual base in the hopes of winning over old white men.
The evidence is in from the 2017 elections, and the verdict is clear—the constituencies that twice voted to put a black man in the White House remain the majority in this country. Democrats spent a year wailing and navel gazing as they tried to figure out how to woo Trump supporters, but it turns out that the way to win is to mobilize the New American Majority—people of color and progressive whites.
In the elections on November 7, Democrats carried the day in contests across the country. From Virginia and New Jersey to Montana to California—and myriad races in between—Democratic candidates swept to victory. What was the secret to all this success? Inspiring and mobilizing those people who are with us rather than trying to persuade those who support Trump that they made a mistake. In Virginia, 91 percent of those who approve of Trump’s performance voted Republican, but Ralph Northam nonetheless trounced his Republican opponent, Ed Gillespie. In New Jersey, 87 percent of Trump supporters stuck with the Republicans, but Democrat Phil Murphy cruised to a landslide victory.
In Virginia and New Jersey, it was the “Obama coalition” of people of color and progressive whites—what I call the New American Majority—that propelled Democrats to victory. In both of those states, the Democratic candidates for governor lost the white vote but won the election because 80 percent of people of color supported them, providing the same kind of cornerstone that Obama enjoyed.
Despite 12 months of worried think pieces, high-profile initiatives, and expensive, poll-driven campaigns designed to appeal to the white working class, the levels of support for Democrats from that constituency barely budged. In Virginia, Northam received 26 percent of the white working-class vote, as compared to the 24 percent Hillary Clinton received in 2016. It is worth noting that Northam and Murphy both received a higher percentage of the white college-educated vote than Clinton did last year, but that could just be a statistical quirk reflecting a higher number of white Democrats turning out to vote than white Republicans. If that uptick is real, it was nonetheless among college-educated whites; in other words, not from the constituency that Democrats have obsessively focused on. The ceiling with the white working class is what it is.
The ability to win without picking up significant additional support from Trump supporters lays bare the fundamental fallacy underlying most Democratic and progressive strategy—the notion that Trump won and enjoys majority support. He didn’t, and he doesn’t. What happened in 2016 was not a mass defection of Democratic voters to Trump. What happened was a dramatic decline in black voter turnout (because of voter suppression, grossly insufficient investment, and overall lack of inspiration from the all-white Democratic ticket), combined with a splintering of the Obama coalition that saw statistically significant numbers of Democratic voters defect to the third- and fourth-party candidacies of Gary Johnson and Jill Stein. Not only did Trump lose the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes; he also failed to garner a majority of the vote in the states that tipped the Electoral College vote—Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.
What does all of this mean for 2018? It means that by inspiring and investing in the core components of the Obama coalition, namely people of color and progressive whites, Democrats can capture control of the House of Representatives and replace Republican governors in key states such as Georgia, Florida, Arizona, Maryland, Illinois, Ohio, and Massachusetts.

Thank you, R78. Bill Clinton was a great president, someone who managed to get a lot done, DESPITE republican majorities in Congress. The Republicans spent millions on an investigation and then finally had to recommend impeachment on a ridiculous charge to slow him down.

In 2016 we heard over and over again:
Voters are tired of Washington insiders. Voters want an outsider
Hillary has baggage.
So who does Ed Rendell proclaim to be the DNC up and coming "Superstar"
A man who has spent 50+ yrs in Washington
A man with 50+ yrs of Washington insider baggage
Jo Biden is an up and coming "superstar" only to 75 yr old political insiders.
I have a great deal of respect for the Democratic elders. However, the party needs to move past many of these old stale ideas and this constant desire to resurrect the past.

[quote] When she does talk, she talks as much as she can about jobs and wages and the economy and as little as she can about guns and abortion and other socially divisive issues—which, for her, are “no-win conversations,” she explained. And at a time when members of both parties are being tugged toward their respective ideological poles, the more center-left Bustos has picked her spots to buck such partisanship. She’s a pro-choice Catholic and an advocate for limited gun control, but she has supported the Keystone pipeline and called for improvements to Barack Obama’s “imperfect” Affordable Care Act. It’s worked. She’s the only Democratic member of the Illinois’ congressional delegation from outside Chicagoland.
She's a moderate Democrat. Is that supposed to be so sort of revelation? As Republicans have continued to move further right. Democrats have moved further and further to the center. Which does nothing for progressive politics and helps feed the "both parties are the same" nonsense.

Working class whites rather vote for policies that hurt, rather than policies that help. The Democratic Party has never stopped supporting them. Despite the work that the white working class is doing to hinder and dismantle those efforts. White working class voters make their own lives harder, and they make it increasingly harder for Democrats to help them, though Democrats continue to try. They vote for their own destruction. Then they turn around and complain that Democrats won't help them.

In addition to the other factors, age is also a problem, because we need someone who can win and serve 2 terms.

Yes, white, old guys should now be disqualified from the Presidency. I think Reagan and now Trump are pretty strong examples of why age should be a qualification. I've worked with people in their late 60s and early 70s, while they may be functioning, they aren't nearly as sharp as they were in their 50s.

This assumption that the Democrats will win with anyone against Trump in 2020 is harmful. This is nothing but head-in-the-sand stuff. It gives the feeling of 1984 ('Reagan is finished') and 2004 ('Dubya's going to be a one-termer').
People seem to think Trump is the worst, the dumbest and nastiest president - and assume he's an inevitable one-term pres. Remember how dumb Dubya was? While Trump's sentences are odd, Dubya couldn't pronounce certain words. The anti-gay bile of 2004 got him votes. Remember how stupid Reagan was? Remember the Reagan era dog-whistle racism? Remember his attitude to AIDS and "sodomites"?
Trump took PA, WI and MI where McCain, Romney and W Bush failed. Trump will have the advantage of incumbency and Congressional GOP will be more onside with him than in 2016. The GOP will run Trump again and the Democrats will lose if itos does not get its shit together.

[quote] agree with you but only to a point. People ARE sick and tired, and people WILL vote in outsiders. Just look at Trump.
I never said people would not vote in outsiders. That is what the last election was about. The establishment candidates were rejected in both parties.
I think they are still hungry for outsiders and that will cause a certain lack of enthusiasm for the people already named as potential nominees...

I met Joe Biden while waiting to get seated at a restaurant. I went up to him to say hello and shake his hand. Instead, he reached for my shoulder and gave it a squeeze while saying "nice to meet you". Wasn't what I expected, but I took it as a warm and friendly gesture. I thanked him for his public service, and that was that. He's very well groomed, tall and smelled good, btw.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | January 2, 2018 9:29 PM |
Joe missed his chance. If he ran in 2016 I think he could have won over Hillary and would have beat Trump. However, I understand why he did not run as his heart wasn't in it after grieving for his son.
That being said, I doubt Trump will run for a second term. He'll find some reasonable reason (family, health, etc) to not run and come out of all this with a golden parachute. That is, if he doesn't resign beforehand.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | January 2, 2018 9:35 PM |
Joe running against Hillary in 2016 would’ve been a nasty, bitter affair. The entire party lined up behind Hillary. Ed Rendell, the man quoted for this article, was singing a far different tune three years ago when he warned Democrats not to run against Hillary. And for a President to back another candidate over his own Vice President was very troubling. Joe had no choice but to retreat, and I don’t blame him for doing so.

Here is the one thing I can confidently predict: no matter who the Democratic Party chooses in 2020, that candidate will not have your identical views, will not say things exactly the way you want them said, and will not run their campaign exactly the way you them to run it.
Knowing that, what are you going to do about it?

I live in the Midwest r39 and Biden doesn't appeal to working class folks here, not even the liberal working class. He's seen as a guy who loses more elections than he wins and who keeps putting his foot in his mouth.

I think some of Obama's reticence in backing HRC was that he wanted Biden to run, r109, but Biden has too many liabilities and his son was terminal at the time, so he wasn't an option.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | January 3, 2018 1:36 AM |
I speculated about that, r105, so they're probably talking to me. I do think that it's possible the Dems can win with a sub-par candidate in 2020 and that would be a bad thing overall.

[quote] I live in the Midwest [R39] and Biden doesn't appeal to working class folks here, not even the liberal working class. He's seen as a guy who loses more elections than he wins and who keeps putting his foot in his mouth.
Well, then who DOES appeal to the Midwest working class voters? Hillary was a disaster in the Midwest. Hell, she almost lost Minnesota, a state that hasn't gone Republican since 1972. Iowa, which Obama won fairly easily in both 2008 and 2012, was never even considered to be in play in 2016. I refuse to believe that farmers in Iowa or factory workers in Ohio are clamoring for someone like Kamala Harris or Kirsten Gillibrand. If we're going to be perfectly honest, Bernie Sanders seems to be the only Democrat (OK, I know he's not really a Democrat) who has been able to light any kind of a fire among Midwest working-class voters. I thought Al Franken might be a contender, but now he's out of the picture. Sherrod Brown might be a possibility. Amy Klobuchar might be a possibility, but she doesn't seem to be presidential material. Who else is there?

Sanders supporters took over the caucus in Kansas and alienated the long-time Dem voters, and then whined when the party withered away by Election Day. They're still bragging on FB about their coup but it's done more harm than good.
Kansas has a good chunk of Democrats (Kathleen Sebelius wasn't that long ago) so the disarray the handful of BernieBros caused is significant.

That argument can be made, but I don't think it's true. Voters ALWAYS want someone who is a rock star and has lots of charisma. And they always seem to prefer someone who can brand him/herself as an "outsider." The general mood in the country is anti-Washington, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Steady, calm and experienced (think Gore, Kerry, Dukakis -- and on the Republican side, McCain, Romney, Dole) never seems to be successful. My biggest fear is that we'll nominate a calm, experienced policy wonk in 2020, thinking that voters will prefer that after 4 years of Trump, only to lose again.

Whether you loath her or not, Hillary Clinton is and was the most qualified person who will run for president in our lifetime - eight years as Bill Clinton's "unofficial" chief strategy advisor, eight years as a Senator and four years as Secretary of State plus Yale Law School. If there was a male sitting on the sidelines right now with those credentials, everyone would be demanding that they run. The only issue I ever had with Hillary was that I wanted her to be a little more real but after 25 years of being pounded by republicans for every utterance, I can see why she was reserved and held back.

As one ages, mental functions decline. It is a given fact. I'm in my early 50s and I certainly can feel my body and mind changing with age. I've worked with several people -- both men and women who are in their late 60s, 70s and early 80s and while they are still functioning, no one can argue that they are functioning like they did when they were in their 40s or 50s. The Presidency takes a huge amount of mental capacity. Hillary used to carry around policy binders and Obama would take a huge three binder notebook into the private quarters to read each night after everyone else was asleep - not to mention the physical stamina needed. I just don't think a man or woman in their late 60s or 70s is the right choice. It is going to take a huge effort to put this country back together again. And for me it ain't Joe or Bernie. We need a young charismatic leader like Kennedy or Obama to get us back on track. It will be the most important presidency of our country.

[quote] In recent decades the candidates who've been successful Presidential candidates for the democrats have been vigorous energetic candidates aged between their early forties to early fifties. John F Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. That's a pattern worth taking note of.
All of those Democratic presidents you mention also won, in part, because they had charisma and strong personalities (JFK and Bill Clinton), or because they could brand themselves as an outsider or someone fresh and new (Carter and Obama). Hillary had neither of those things going for her, which is why she was a flawed candidate from the start. Who do we have today who is cut from the same cloth as JFK, Carter, Bill Clinton or Obama?

The candidate has to be a fake populist to win like Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Trump. (GWB was famously seen as someone you would want to have a beer with more than Kerry). Obama wasn't really a populist but some saw him that way.
Biden and Bernie are too old and the rest are too corporate. Those spouting "SJW" lines will not win. No one wants Zuckerberg - let him run in China.

R199 - you're just wrong. Site one recent study supporting your position about cognitive abilities as you age. Look at the work Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter have been up to since they left office. Neither one is showing lack of cognitive abilities. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was 61 when he started his thirty year on the US Supreme Court. Earl Warren was over 60 when he brokered Brown v Board of Ed.
R197 - JFK may ave been many things, but vigorous and energetic. Not so much.

He was also a "Go To" guy when TV News panels were looking for a Dem to criticize Obama during the financial crisis. I remember him acting like he knew every damned thing about our Financial crisis and Obama was getting it wrong. He's also crooked himself with a lot of Wall Street Connections. Didn't he have to resign or something? My point is I don't really give a shit who he thinks would be a good candidate to go after Trump. Has anyone here ever tried to wake up someone over 70? You would have watched the 40 minute ritual it takes for them to wake up their brain, sit up in bed, put in eye drops so they can see after a night of dry eyes, drink their water before they can talk because their mouths are so dry they can't talk...and that's before they even make it to the bathroom to start a whole other set of very slow morning wake-up rituals just to get them to a place where they can function among other humans? And, that is if they are a relatively healthy 70 year old.
Not someone who you want to have to jump up at 4am when something blows up somewhere.

Just as they did with Hillary, the Republicans will uses every thing that they can find to sew discord among Democrats. It's not about what side of the issue they are on or were on. Its about what can they use to create apathy and discord among liberals. Republicans used the Crime Bill against Hillary, with some success and she merely gave her support to Bill. Here’s what I don’t get. (This post is exclusively about age, not platform, so save your screaming.)
Bernie Sanders was too old to be president, according to just about all media pundits on both the left and the right. He was 73 during the campaign.
Clinton was 69 during the campaign. Four years younger.
Trump was 70. Three years younger.
Now the DNC is pushing Biden, who will be SEVENTY SEVEN in 2020. And Trump will be 73–the same age Sanders was when he was “too old to be president,” except that Trump is a couple decades older senilitywise.
I work in the media and I have to say I am sick of the way thoughts are fed to voters and disturbed by the way voters embrace the thoughts that are fed to them.

Biden wouldn't run as VP again. I think he's done with that. I would only vote for him if he had a young and charismatic VP--as in Beto O'Rourke, Chris Murphy. (Well, I would vote for any Democrat really--have never voted for a Republican in my entire life and wouldn't start now). I would love to see Sally Yates as VP but not sure if she is interested in politics--everything about her says genuine integrity and gravitas. I don't see Kamala Harris as having much personal appeal (she seems very cold to me). Amy Klobuchar is popular in Minnesota but I think she is too frauish for the rest of the country. Saw Seth Moulton, MA congressman.on morning show today. He is impressive and young. (Harvard degrees, 3 tours as a Marine officer in Iraq). Could make a great VP candidate. Just wish there was a stronger, more charismatic presidential contender in the wings. I like Booker, but people don't like his corporate connections and some won't like his "bachelor" status. Al Franken could have been good but that's not happening. I love Liz Warren but she's too left to appeal in the Midwest. I neither like or trust Bernie and never have (I do like his policies). I think we may be stuck with Biden in the end (unfortunately) so we need a running mate who represents the future.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | July 22, 2018 10:34 PM |
Biden is elderly. He is older than Bernie was when Bernie was called too old to run. I will be very upset if the Democrats run Biden—and so I expect they will. Perhaps with Pelosi or Chelsea Clinton as his VP, because if you’re going to self-sabotage, self-sabotage consistently.

Biden would have won against Trump in 2016 but I can't see him winning the Democrat nomination in 2020 because we are now in the #metoo era and he has too many pics/videos of himself getting handsy

Rendell supported Hillary in 2007-2008 and was damned insulting towards Obama who he decided had no chance of getting the nomination and "couldn't win" against the Republicans..... Fuck him. No to Joe Biden, No, to Hillary, and Hell No, to Bernie Sanders.
by Anonymous | reply 331 | July 22, 2018 11:11 PM |
Too old, so is Sanders. My problem is, though, a lot of people who are saying this are still supporting Diane Feinstein in CA. She'll be 91 at the end of this six year term, should she win. If she lives through it that is. This party needs a serious retirement/buy out at the national level. Like yesterday.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | July 22, 2018 11:15 PM |
We've had a lot of old-assed Senators. Not very much criticism of all those old men who served into their 0's. But Diane is too old?? uh, uh. When she took it upon herself to release those transcripts a few months ago that was it for me. I will support her as long as she wants to hold office. A senile Diane is worth more than Bitch McConnell, Chuck Grassley and all the rest of the GOP senators combines.

There isn’t a single Democrat with a high regional, let alone national, profile that can unite Democrats to take on Trump in 2020. Since straight white males are going to be excluded from the pool of potential candidates, the chances of winning are very low.

It doesn't matter who runs. I'm voting for the Democrat. If you want to get in the weeds of it and support someone in the primaries, fine. I plan on doing that too. But one we have a nominee, whoever it is, we go with it. Period. We cannot afford the luxury of getting divisive and pissed off . Who ever it is will be "Good enough." And since we now can count on the fact the Russians and the Republicans will be working together to undermine us even in the primaries, get ready for some ugly shit. Just stand fast. Right now, I have to say, that the only thing I'm absolutely against is Bernie. I wish the fuck someone would shut him up. Right now he is traveling all over the country creating mischief in the Congressional races and it stinks. He's got that naive young woman from NYC traveling with him as if she's a celebrity because she wants to be a Social Democrat. As LBJ used to say, "Better he's in the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in."

While the focus has been on his sidesow, the Cabinet level departments and the regulatory agencies as well as Congress have been wrecking our country. Seriously.

[QUOTE]One Democrat keeps emerging as the candidate Republicans are worried about most in 2020: Joe Biden.

by Anonymous | reply 377 | September 29, 2018 2:14 PM |
I'd be very leery of Republican strategists announcing publicly who they fear.
Personally, I think Biden is authentic and would clean the floor with Trump in debates, with a kind of effortlessness because Biden, unlike a Booker or a Harris or Warren, feels he's got nothing to prove against Trump. Biden knows who he its and he knows what Trump is.
Every great candidate has his (or someday her) moment when he or she looks or feels right, beyond whatever they are selling as platform. I think the stars have aligned for Biden. He's known. He has a great vibe. He doesn't have to do anything except be himself. If you want an antidote to Trump, you don't have to take a leap of faith with Biden because you know him much better than many other potential candidates.
Trump is angry. I think the worst thing the Dems could offer is an alternative kind of anger (like the indignance of Elizabeth Warren or Cory Booker.). We've had enough. We need an Obama or (Bill) Clinton tone... forward, positive, eager to accomplish, optimistic.). If you want anger you've got it. People want solutions. That's how Trump fooled them. A combination of outrage and snake oil. If people still want angry, they'll have it in Trump.
Among the newcomers or outsiders, Mitch Landrieu reminds me most of Biden.
by Anonymous | reply 378 | September 29, 2018 2:24 PM |
When has a couple Republican stategists handicapping the Democratic race, mostly anonymous, ever had an actual effect? Being quoted by Politico that you think Biden is the hardest Dem to beat will have absolutely no bearing on his chances of getting the nomination.
And yes, I like Mitch as well (I started the one and only thread about him running in 2020 on here). The problem is that I fear there’s some skeletons in his closet we don’t know about, potentially of the #MeToo variety. With Biden, everything is already out there. He’s been a national figure for decades now, not to mention Vice President for eight years.
by Anonymous | reply 379 | September 29, 2018 5:25 PM |
Rendell is as delusional as Biden is. In the metoo age, Biden's treatment of Anita Hill has really turned a lot of people off. He quasi-apologized several years ago, but then seemed to become more critical in the past couple of years. Keep in mind that democrats pay the price for metoo much more quickly than republicans and for much less.

Have none of you ever known any Irish or Italian huggers? That is all Joe is. I agree that all the hugging is not always appreciated, but it truly does come from a non sexual place.

Why? He’ll be running against two white ass white supremacists.
And all he has to do is turn some combination of PA, OH, MI, WI and FL blue again—not even all of them, but most. It’s not like Trump is some formidable wall of a candidate. He barely got in by the skin of his teeth. Three million more Americans voted for Hillary.

Biden would need a young vigorous VP. That's obvious, because of his age and his centrism--personally am not a Kamala Harris fan (even though I'm a woman in California)--just don't find her likeable enough. I think Beto would be great as VP even if he is not elected in Texas today. Stacey Abrams and Andrew Gillum are future stars--I don't see either of them running in 2020 as they will be new governors (fingers crossed). Biden still has the gravitas to oppose Trump IMO (although I have a faint hope that Trump will resign before 2020--and maybe move to Russia, otherwise he is indictable in New York even if Pence pardons him).
