She can sing, she just doesn't have power or range, but she can sing. There's a documentary podcast that has her isolated voca tracks. She did most of her own BG vocals with stacked harmony.
Control alone cemented her success. As already stated, it broke all kinds of records (mainly due to Jam & Lewis) but Janet has the personality and presence to pull it off. Despite not being a trained dancer, much like Michael, her natural ability is evident in her videos and concerts where her dancing is just more "ON" than any of the trained dancers behind her.
Jam &lewis were responsible for like75% of the R&B and a huge chunk of Pop hits in the 80s. They knew how to craft a hit.

Gimme a beat!
The feminist lyrics to Nasty Boys and social justice-tinged lyrics to Rhythm Nation resonate now more than ever.
Janet pioneered head mics and highly choreographed dance breaks into the video age. The song Nasty was the first new jack swing hit and lots of female and male artists started using that sound and incorporating dance into their music after that. The whole TRL age of singer/dancers (*NSYNC, Britney, Usher, Beyonce) all credit Janet's videos as an influence. The success of Janet's Control was so great it landed her choreographer (Paula Abdul) a music career.

R27, and neither does Janet. She's an okay dancer, but I've never been a fan of her whispery, cooing voice. Poor Michael was really the only truly talented Jackson. I can respect how hard they've worked, though, with those abusive parents who were all about the money. Like I said, I don't have anything against JJ, and have enjoyed some off her singles, but I've never gone out to Youtube to listen to or watch any of her work, like I have with so many other singers.
I love and admire Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Patti Labelle, Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Etta James, Gladys Knight, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Diana Ross, Phyllis Hyman. And Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cook, Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye.
Anyway, I wish you peace and happiness enjoying Janet as much as you do. I own recordings of all the other performers I mentioned, but none of JJ's.

Like Madonna, she was an "entertainer" and a personality". You don't need a great vice if you've got those attributes. Her songs sucked but frankly a lot of female pop singers from the 80s onward sound the same to me and seem devoid of talent.

Anyone who thinks Janet has no talent or was not a megastar in the 80s and early 90's is clearly ignorant.
She herself never claimed to be a great voice, but her talent was her overall package and she had jsut as much stage presence and persona, that "X Factor" in Simon Cowell's words...... Star Quaity as Michael.
She was nowhere as talented a musician as he was (he wrote several of his own hits on his own; Janet needed Jam & Lewis to really make her songs though she did collaborate with them).
But she broke many records, has the charts and sales to prove it, and if you were around in the 80s and 90s she was EVERYWHERE.
It's really just stupid to try and argue otherwise.
Now once she left Jam & Lewis and started working Jermaine Dupri and others???? Her impact and place in the pop world dwindled.

I’m not a HUGE fan of Janet’s. However, she was fabulous in her prime and I really enjoyed her music. She was very pretty and when she set her mind to it, she was in great shape.
I’m not sure what ails her, where she lets herself go, & doesn’t take care of herself. I’m guessing it’s depression. She needs to take better care of herself. I’ve seen plenty of black women look AMAZING forever, well into their 60s and 70s. But they all have several things in common: genetics, obviously, which is why they hardly show signs of aging, they eat very healthy diets, and they work out religiously.
Janet has enough money to do all of this, whereas others don’t. She should be kinder to herself.

I love all these ridiculous comments talking about Janet as if she’s not the legend that she is and will always be. She’s one of the only three artists alive to have a #1 album in each of the last four decades. She’s also the only artist of her time to put out a recent #1 album, to have a recent single place on the Hot 100, and she just finished up a VERY critically successful tour that packed audiences in every night and looked fabulous while doing it, all without cancelling or postponing a single show. I’d even say that her RN 1814 is the most timely and relevant of all ‘80s pop albums in terms of its subject matter literally making the headlines as I type. She’s won and or been nominated for just about every award under the sun, has a legion of fans worldwide (despite haters saying she never made an imprint outside of North America, try telling that to her Japanese, Dutch, African, Australian, South American and UK fan bases), has touched every aspect of the industry from music to TV to film to books, has sold millions of albums, and has behind her a wealth of iconic dance hits and groundbreaking music videos that have been the inspiration to just about every pop star occupying the Hot 100 today (Bruno Mars, Britney, Beyonce, Rihanna, X-Tina, Gaga, Taylor Swift, Timberlake, Ciara, etc have ALL noted her as an inspiration).

R62, though I understand what you’re saying, what can she do? This is how musicians make money. You know this is true. I don’t see anything wrong with Mick Jagger strutting his old ass out on stage (I’ve seen the Stones at least 5 times). Now, I understand that very few musicians hold the public’s interest, as well as The Rolling Stones, but I think that they do it because they obviously want/need the money, and enjoy performing.
I’m not sure that The Rolling Stones or Madonna need the money as much as Janet does. The aforementioned artists all seem to have been very careful with their cash. I’ve heard rumors that Janet is personally broke.
If that’s true, then this is why she tours, and why she had a biological baby with a billionaire who allegedly didn’t treat her as well as she would have liked.

It’s intersting to see just how influential even her personal style is. We’ve talked about how ‘Control’ inspired several wannabes, but into the ‘90s, when she went from being militant and tomboyish to svelte and sexy, various acts from TLC to Salt-N-Pepa had similar transitions. And with her crimson-colored Velvet Rope-era hair and neo-soul vibe, artists like Mary J. Blige and Faith Evans were shortly thereafter sportin similar looks. Hell, even Rihanna co-opted the look during her ‘Loud’ era...

This all has to with personal tastes and preferences. If I’m driving, listening to the radio, and CONTROL comes on, you can bet your butt I’m numbing the volume on that shit, and I’m gonna have a really good few minutes.

Better at what? You’re comparing apples to oranges. Those women SANG. Janet can sing as well, but she doesn’t have the range that those women have. Janet is a performer. All around. When you see her in concert you get a SHOW. Oddly enough, Whitney’s “How Will I Know” was written for Janet. Whitney also covered “Control” in concert in the ‘80s...

Her versatility alone is underrated. Her hard rock song “Black Cat” (which she wrote solo) is the only song in history to top the Billboard Hot 100 and Mainstream Rock Chart, as well as going Top 10 on R&B. Tommy Lee from Motley Crue spoke publicly of his love for the song and Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead loved the track so much that he wanted to remake it with her. by Anonymous | reply 111 | December 31, 2017 5:58 AM |
She was in her peak form and prime in the 80's and very early 90's. Very few artist could match her success. Really only Madonna and Whitney were on the same level. You have to remember that when she was at her peak it was the time of music videos and "image is everything." She had wonderful choreographed videos which helped propell her to the top. Her videos were the gold standard with respect to choreography. She even eclipsed her brother for a while when he started looking weird and his popularity waned. Was she the best singer? No, but that's no different than today's crop of Katie Perry, Pink. Rihanna etc. the music industry has never been solely about talent. This is why Tracy Chapman and Natalie Merchant aren't hugely famous.

R121, outside of America, Janet really isn't that popular. She hasn't sold anywhere close to what Madonna, Whitney, Mariah or Celine have. The other women I mentioned make the top 20 artists, with Madonna, Celine and Mariah in the top 11. Janet is number 34 on this list. Britney Spears, Shania Twain (who only really had three albums), and even Rihanna have all outsold her.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | December 31, 2017 9:35 PM |
If we are just comparing physical sales of studio albums (not compilations), Madonna's best selling album is True Blue at 22.5 million copies. Janet's best selling album is Janet 12.6 million copies. That's a huge difference. It would be even worse if you threw in The Immaculate Collection.

R123, Janet’s biggest sellers have not even been recertification. Richard Branson himself has gone on record as saying that the janet. album sold over 20 million copies. So basically, your point, like Madonna’s career, is irrelevant.

R125, I seriously doubt the Janet. certification was underestimated by 10 million copies. She is just not on the same level as those other divas. Anyone who says otherwise is just not looking at the numbers. Is there any artist in popular entertainment who would just be ok with their albums being undercertified by 10 million copies? Doubtful. And if Janet. sold 20 million, that's well under Madonna's 28-30 million for Immaculate Collection, Mariah's 25-30 million for Music Box, Celine's 30-35 million for Falling Into/Let's Talk About Love and Whitney's 40 million for The Bodyguard.

Also, comparing singles sales...from that same site, a ranking of artists with the most platinum singles (globally).
To complete MJD’s answer, here is the list of artists who have the most million selling singles (question 2): 1. Madonna – 38 2. Beatles – 31 3. Rolling Stones – 28 4. Janet Jackson – 24 4. Whitney Houston – 24 6. Bee Gees – 21 7. ABBA – 20 8. David Bowie – 15 9. George Michael – 13 10. Bon Jovi – 12 10. Céline Dion – 12 10. Fleetwood Mac – 12

R112 Says it best. I will completely cop to the fact the 89-92 were major Janet years. I think her fame peaked when the Herb Ritts video was released which made her look gorgeous for the first time. Before that she was cute.
And as for her vs Rhi Rhi, I get it that black folks do not think she can sing. I disagree. She absolutely can sing, but it's not that "started in the church choir" style singing which is so popular with AAs. Of course I concede that Whitney had a rare talent, but her singing was generally not pleasant to me. Some of her pop stuff certainly was, but once she got ballad-y or very R&B, I wasn't a fan. Don't get me wrong, I like R&B very much. But call me a sexist(even though I am female) I have never liked female R&B. The first album I ever bought was Otis Redding, followed by Marvin Gaye, but I never bought a female R&B album. I went to see my all time fave Al Green on Broadway and his costar was Ms Patti LaBelle. So help me God, if I didn't love Hot Grits so much I would have left after 20 minutes. My ears rang for a week following the show.
Rhianna appeals to me in a way no other singer has in ages. Live your Life(w/TI) is my favorite song, and her collab with Em is right up there. Chris Martin said that Rhianna is his favorite girl singer...maybe it's just a white thing?

Janet is one of them, darling. Janet’s output was also not as frequent as Madonna’s and Mariah’s—two artists who put out nearly an album a year at their peaks. Janet always had 3-4 year gaps between projects. And her biggest albums haven’t been recertified. So shut the fuck up.

JJ’s RN 1814, 1990’s biggest selling album, is not only more relevant today than any album ever put out by Whitney, Mariah or Madonna, but it also achieved chart stats that nothing they’ve put out has achieved. In fact, RN, Thriller and Born in the USA are the only three albums from the ‘80s to have 7 top 10 singles. What separates them is that RN’s singles all went top 5.

It's funny how even at the height of her success so long ago, Janet's album sales didn't even come close to what Madonna was selling. You'd think that since Janet only put out an album once ever 3 years, that the fans would be clamoring to buy it. But no, that never happened. Sad.

Rythm Nation was a fabulous album... in 1989. That's nearly 30 years ago. Time to get over it. Bankrupting State Fairs, cancelling "world tours", calling in sick over and over, repeated fake health crisis's, having a perverted pedophile brother, marrying/prego at 50/divorcing/victim of spousal abuse/shaking spouse down for $, well all these things were just shovel after shovel of dirt on her career. She's totally done, no one's going to touch her in the music industry. Easier to start fresh with someone new without all the "Jackson Drama" and likely have more success. The Jackson have horrendous work ethic and have way too much drama.

Wrong again, on every level. First off, Universal owns her videos, which is the reason there isn’t a proper Janet VEVO channel. There used to be one which had all of her videos, and they all had tens of millions of views, but the channel disappeared because of Universal and now when her videos are put up on YouTube it’s because a fan uploads it. As for her “new videos flopping,” — WRONG. “No Sleeep” has handily passed the 10 million mark.

Janet is a mixed bag to me, honestly. I don't hate her, but she is not my favorite. She is pretty, but a lot of that is the result of her plastic surgeon - her nose looks like an architect's triangular ruler. Her voice is drowned out by her instrumentals, but her songs are catchy and yes, she can dance. Often, she'd hide her limited talents through a rather pretentious and mysterious image. Her music is fun and catchy, but thanks to her producers. Basically, to me, she was a proto-Beyonce/Rihanna - light-brown black girls with a prettiness acceptable to white people, with limited vocal ability covered up by slick, glamorous packaging. Jody Watley, actually, had a bit more depth than Janet.

Janet herself said she suffers from depression and stress eating. During the Velvet Rope era, she eluded to molestation/ something "traumatic" happening to her at age 4 or 5.
She had body image issues since her role on Good Times. She was married to that crazy drug addicted Debarge boy at 18 and they had domestic violence issues. Allegedly, she was pregnant during this time and got a late term abortion by request of Joe. Some say her nose job really came about because Debarge broke her nose.
She had already seen alot by the time Control came out when she was 19. She had alot to say.
I think she did very well for herself. It seemed she was going down the path of another wayward and dysfunctional celebrity sibling but Control turned that all around and she actually became a big pop star instead.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | January 2, 2018 12:06 AM |
Unfortunately, for Janet, she is in the shadow of brother Michael, Madonna, and of course Whitney who all were far bigger global stars, but she still did quite well for herself. She has 10 #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits and most of her albums went to #1 as well. That's nothing to sneeze at.

[quote]Unfortunately, for Janet, she is in the shadow of brother Michael, Madonna, and of course Whitney who all were far bigger global stars
You are so misguided, lol. Janet Jackson escaped any shadows in 1986 when she broke out and attained mega-success with her third album. Each subsequent album was an even bigger event. The woman has been nominated for gobs of industry awards, has fans on a GLOBAL level (social media doesn’t lie, and neither does the fact that she’s toured all over the world, on six of the seven continents), and has a litany of hit albums and singles under her belt as well as success in other areas of the business. Does she get her proper due as the trailblazing artist she’s been over the past 30-something years? No, but she’s definitely not in anyone’s shadow.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | January 2, 2018 4:52 AM |
R218, your snide sarcasm is delightful, but you have to be pretty fucking stupid if you can’t see how the RRHOF has slighted black female artists over the years. Not only should Janet have been in years ago, but artists like Whitney, Mariah, and (solo) Tina Turner have never even been nominated. Chaka Khan is also long overdue. Hell, Donna Summer had to die before they let her in.

Is it just me, or is "global" the dominant word in this thread?
Honey Janbot, are you a masochist? Why do you continue to beat this same old drum? Janet is fine, she's great, she's an 80s phenom. But she is not an icon in the greater universe. She is not Madonna, Elvis, The Beatles, The Stones or even Miss Nippy.
You have to capture black and white fandom to become an icon. Aretha and Whitney did it, so it's not impossible for a black woman to do so. But yes, it is harder. I know black people who wouldn't listen to a white artist if you gave them the music free. Why then isn't understandable that some white folks prefer white music? That isn't any more racist than when a black man choses to date white only. It may sound close minded to some, but you cannot legislate people's taste. It's funny because black folks often castigate their own for "selling out." For instance. Snoop and Dre. But the fact is, unless you crossover, you will never attain the status reached by Whitney, Aretha and Mariah. Phyllis Hyman could out sing all of them put together, but I would wager that no more than 20% of American Caucasians even know who she was.
by Anonymous | reply 228 | January 2, 2018 7:51 AM |
^^Well, aren’t you an ignorant bitch?
What planet do YOU live on that you aren’t already aware of Janet’s massive white audience? An ‘80s phenom? Bitch, please. You’re talking about this GLOBAL ICON as if she’s Mary J. Blige or Faith Evans—not slighting them but these are women whose audiences are mostly black. Janet Jackson is a pop icon. She crossed over with Control. White kids banged their heads to Black Cat and various white rock artists remade the song and gave her plaudits for it, which took it to #1. She has Russian, German and Dutch fan clubs. Going to one of her shows (which I’m certainy you’ve never done or else you’d know better) will tell you just what her demographic is, and it is largely diverse—young, old, black, white, gay, straight, male, female... Many white artists have given her props over the years for being an inspiration. Janet Jackson is not some MTV relic from yesteryear (although she IS their first-declared icon). Her imagery and influences spans the ‘80s (Jody Watley, Vanessa Williams, Paula Abdul, Pebbles, Karyn White, Nia Peebles), the ‘90s (TLC, Salt N Pepa, Aaliyah) and the new millennium (Britney, Christina, Ciara, Beyonce, Rihanna, JLo, Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys, Chris Brown, Mya, P!nk...).
So, in closing, you can take your silly non-factor of an unfounded opinion and go sit in a corner somewhere.

Why people want to limit this woman to having only North American popularity is beyond me, especially when much proof to the contrary is readily available online. Janet has fans all over the world. I can remember one of more popular fan clubs back in the day being one based out of The Netherlands. She sold out the Tokyo Done in record time when she toured with Rhythm Nation. Australia loves her. One of her most ardent supporters online is a guy named Darren Burn—a white bloke from the U.K. Yeah, she’s totally underrated.

2001? You mean, the year she got her biggest first week sales ever and landed her 5th consecutive #1 album, landed her 10th Hot 100 #1 with a song that was the longest running #1 of the year, won yet another Grammy, played to massive audiences on tour including the Aloha Stadium, was declared the first MTV Icon, and looked like a million bucks doing all of it? That 2001? Girl, ‘bye!
by Anonymous | reply 240 | January 2, 2018 9:28 PM |
The Beatles are also played in elevators. That in no way negates their contribution to popular music. One day Beyonce and Taylor Swift will be played in elevators. That means nothing at all.
Janet was an entertainer and that's what she did. Her shows were fun. The music was great as was the dancing. It was a party atmosphere. If you've never seen her live, you can't know. She was every bit the entertainer her brother was.
I honestly don't know why this is an issue. Some people love her, some people like her, and some don't. So what? That doesn't change the fact that she was a force to be reckoned with. She was on top. If you don't remember it that way, then clearly her music was not to your taste.
To answer your question, OP, No she was not overrated in her prime.

Listen, the harsh fact is that the only reason Janet got any traction was because she was Michael's sister. Michael became a worldwide phenomenon in 1983, the biggest act since The Beatles. He was so huge that anything he had even a finger in went through the roof. Rockwell? Exploded and then was never heard from again. Diana Ross' terrible Muscles? Huge. The Jacksons' Victory album and tour- it was all because of Michael. Jesus, even some outtake from when he was 12 years old wound up charting. Fucking Kim Fields even charted with a song called "Dear Michael."
However, by the beginning of 1985, Thriller had waned and everyone was dying for the next piece of product from Jackson. Bad was taking far too long, so in the interim, Capitol managed to take his fat, less talented sister (and by less talented, I mean even less talented than Rebbie. Don't believe me? Put Centipede up against any song by Janet and tell me Rebbie doesn't blow her away) and plug her into a couple of hot producers and have them mimic Michael. How could it fail? They could have done it with Tito and it would have been a hit. And Rhythm Nation was the same thing. Bad was a monster hit, but my early 89, it was over, so what do they do until Michael's next album? Another Janet copy. By that point, people had been brainwashed into thinking Janet actually had talent, because thanks to Michael, Jam & Lewis, they managed to disguise the fact that Janet couldn't really sing, certainly couldn't dance, and had zero onscreen presence. I'm sure John Singleton was sorry he cast her in his follow up film after he saw her completely amateur, embarrassing performance.
Once Michael fell out of favor in the US, so did Janet. The only difference is people actually loved Michael. No one loved Janet, they just went along for the ride because she was something connected to Michael. And nothing could prove that more than the debacle her "career" has been for the past 15 years.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | January 2, 2018 11:07 PM |
^Get out of here with that mess. Less talented sister? Please. Janet's vocals are stronger than most every single female artist out there with the exception of maybe Whitney!!!
And she's totally getting in to the RNR Hall of Fame next year!!! Mark my words!
by Anonymous | reply 248 | January 2, 2018 11:49 PM |
LOL at the “Rebbie sings better” troll remark. Honey, that was Martha Wash performing those vocal acrobats on Centipede, not Rebbie. Neither Rebbie nor LaToya could touch Janet’s vocal harmonies and versatility. If either one of them had attempted to go from the whimsical vocals of a song like When I Think of You to the rocker chick edge of a Black Cat, they would’ve failed—BIG.
Oh, and while your continuous “Janet is only famous because of Michael” dreck is cute, it’s also highly incorrect and tiresome at this point. I realize that you’re a troll of the lowest order, and that you clearly don’t mean what you’re saying, but let’s just say that you do mean it. Janet Jackson did not maintain a decades-long career as an icon by being Michael jacnson’s sister. Logistically, it doesn’t even make sense. You know it. I know it. Everybody knows it.
Also, Janet’s albums are like in-depth looks into her life. Michael could not have and would not have been as candid as Janet was in her records. He had too much to hide. As for copying, MJ actively sought out Janet’s video directors, choreographers and producers in the early to mid ‘90s, which is why his Dangerous album is basically a blatant rip-off of Janet’s RN 1814, complete with an appearance from rapper Heavy D. and gobs of that Janet/Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis-esque New Jack Swing flava. Hell, Michael even rehearsed his dance moves to Janet’s The Knowledge and said on record that it was his favorite song by her (he even copied her a bit from her video for The Knowledge at the end of his Black or White clip).

[quote]Once Michael fell out of favor in the US, so did Janet.
Wrong again! When Michael was fending off child molestation charges in the mid ‘90s, Janet had just come off an Oscar nom, yet another #1 album, a #1 US film,, and had already signed one of the two landmark record deals that she would sign in that decade which would twice make her the highest paid artist in history. It literally got to a point where Michael was calling her and asking her if she would duet with him on a single, a sort of F. You to the negative press, which would end up being their single Scream. But of course, you knew that too.

Only really good performance she did was Pleasure Principle and the accompanying dance. But of course she didn't write that or produce that and she dances now like its still 1992. And how does she go from 200 pounds to 100 pounds in three months. It cant be good for the heart. And why do all black women performers look like Wendy Williams?

[R247], Janet's career was basically just filler for in between Michael's albums. When Michael started to change his face then she had her nose done and other procedures in order to still appearing as his little sister

Whitney Houston was a good looking lady, but she was nowhere near as pretty as Janet Jackson.

by Anonymous | reply 345 | January 11, 2018 6:42 PM |
Whitney Houston was a LOT of things, but prettier than Janet Jackson was not one of them. She had height and a lanky, pencil body with a dazzling smile and a small b-cup implant (after giving birth to Bobbie C), which was fine for her, but Janet Jackson is, was and will always be gorgeous. Stunning. Her curves and flawless skin are just two things, but she has the most gorgeous smile I’ve ever seen on a woman.

Jabba, grasping as usual.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | January 11, 2018 7:28 PM |
LOL. Janet getting called prettier is one of the most insulting things I've heard about Whitney in my life. The delusion is real. Janet is the spitting image of MJ and neither one of them were/are beautiful. Attractive/pretty at best which was quickly ruined by terrible rhinoplasty
by Anonymous | reply 348 | January 11, 2018 7:39 PM |
Honey, you can post as many glamour shots of Nippy as you want, but the fact remains that, while she was a nice looking lady, she was no Janet in the beauty dept. Janet Jackson is beautiful. BEAU-TI-FUL. Doe eyes, caramel complexion, coke bottle figure, unmatched smile...

[quote]Was Janet Jackson Overrated in her prime??
She was a pop singer. Many times people try to make them seem as some kind of otherworldly deities but they are just normal people who are more or less talented in some ways. Usually the songs you hear are the result of a group effort, and with Janet Jackson that's certainly the case.

p.s., who gives a fuck about no one bringing her up here? Seriously? She’s on the minds of everyone all over social media because of the SB, which is par for the course this time of year. This year everyone is taking about how Justina Timberwimp owes her an apology.
