POLL: Bonnie Tyler’s "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" v. Kim Carnes’s "Bette Davis Eyes"

Though some categorize it as such, I don't think of "Bette Davis Eyes" as a power ballad. It was my pre-"Every Breath You Take" anthem, though. However it's categorized, for me, "Bette Davis Eyes" totally eclipsed "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which, in spite of its '80s ubiquity, I barely noticed before season one of Glee.

But what do YOU think? Yours is the only opinion that matters. To you.

Total Eclipse of the Heart, by Bonnie Tyler.

I remember wanking to those guys in the shower in Total Eclipse of the Heart as a teen.

by Anonymousreply 2December 25, 2017 3:31 PM

If I were going to wank to guys in a Total Eclipse video, it would be Finn and Jesse.

Total Eclipse of the Heart. Not even close.

by Anonymousreply 4December 25, 2017 3:43 PM

R3, well, since Cory Monteith was like 1 and Groff wasn't even born when the song came out I just had to do with the hot shirtless guys and their speedo bulges.

by Anonymousreply 5December 25, 2017 3:47 PM

Total Eclipse of the Heart - was one of those played to death songs. I'll never like it.

by Anonymousreply 6December 25, 2017 4:19 PM

Bette Davis Eyes - lots of jive and sass in it. Great song.

Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Interesting song but such a downer, like a funeral dirge. Doesn't make you feel better after you hear it. Bette Davis Eyes for the win - and songwriter/singer Jackie DeShannon co-wrote it.

Bette Davis Eyes was #1 for 9 weeks on Billboard's Top 100 singles and ended up being the #1 best selling single of 1981. I remember buying it in the exact record sleeve shown in the photo. Super popular song.

Bette Davis Eyes.

Total Eclipse is a power ballad. Bette Davis is simply a pop song.

I would compare T.E. to "The Power of Love". Or even Cher's "I Found Someone".

Total Eclipse Of The Heart wins for the cougar schoolteacher/teenage vampire video.

by Anonymousreply 11December 25, 2017 5:24 PM

Bette Davis Eyes for me, and it's not even close.

I didn't even realize until recently that Kim Carnes' version was a remake. But she sings the hell out of it, and I like it better than the original.

Bette Davis Eyes--a little novelty. Total Eclipse--one of those songs I never want to hear again.

by Anonymousreply 13December 25, 2017 6:05 PM

Kim Carnes "singing" is painful. The lyrics are fucking awful.

by Anonymousreply 14December 25, 2017 6:15 PM

What about Endless Love?

by Anonymousreply 15December 25, 2017 6:47 PM

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" was written and produced by Jim Steinman, the same guy who wrote those overblown rock-opera ballads for Meatloaf ("I'd Do Anything for Love [But I Won't Do That]") and Celine Dion (It's All Coming Back to Me Now), songs that I never want to hear again.

I could not stop listening to BDE. I had the opposite reaction to TE.

by Anonymousreply 18December 26, 2017 10:08 PM

BDE is one of my all-time favorites. Fun fact: The recording is a live performance in studio, with no post-production. She and her band rehearsed for two days and recordrd it on the first take, which is what was released.

I like TEOTH also, even the 90s dance remake by Niki French.

Bump

by Anonymousreply 20December 30, 2017 4:04 AM

The bitch who sang the remake of TEOTH should have her tongue ripped out and her teeth kicked in.

by Anonymousreply 21December 30, 2017 4:07 AM

This bitch, Chloe Kohanski is going to be the first winner of the voice to become a STAR. She just has it. Her voice is ruff and raspy and full of vocal pockets but has this gorgeous resonance. She sang Blondie and Bette Davis Eyes and Landslide too.

Depends on which version you hear. More of an upper.

Eighties pop rock needs a revival. She's hot stuff. Can't wait to see what her original music will be like.

Total Eclipse Of The Heart has been restored to 4K. Not that it matters much since the source material is so dark and blurry. Still, a great reason to watch the video once again. I can't even remember how many times I wanked to the guys in speedos bit when I was 12. I assume kids these days with their endless supply of hardcore porn don't realize how hot a simple furry chest and a speedo bulge was to us.

BTW, I love the video, especially the pre-chorus part. There's something so deliciously dark and weird about it all. And yes, it's a very male video which is probably the reason Bonnie Tyler apparently hates it herself.

Why don't you have your own little revival on Spotify.

by Anonymousreply 27January 13, 2020 1:29 PM

Bette Davis Eyes by a country mile. Total Eclipse is fine, but it's not one I reach for unless I'm in a mood.

Terrific version by Brandon Flowers. I wish he'd have released it commercially.

In my early-'80s gay-teen wannabe-video-producer's eye, I envisioned TEOTH as a remake of the end of [italic]Sunset Boulevard,[/italic] during Norma's descent into madness when she kills Joe.

More than two years have passed, R22, and we're still waiting for this marginally talented "Chloe" person to become a STAH.

by Anonymousreply 30January 13, 2020 1:42 PM

Total Eclipse of the Heart is incredibly popular on spotify and youtube. Kind of surprising to me.

by Anonymousreply 31January 13, 2020 1:52 PM

It was played TO DEATH back in the day. TO DEATH.

by Anonymousreply 32January 13, 2020 1:56 PM

"She's pure as New York snow" is just such a great lyric.

by Anonymousreply 33January 13, 2020 2:00 PM

^^^ Even better is the naughty-naughty original lyric Jackie DeShannon and Donna Weiss wrote that Carnes changed, to be sure her version of BDE got radio airplay:

"She'll expose you

When she BLOWS you

Off your feet with the crumbs she throws you . . ."

by Anonymousreply 34January 13, 2020 2:11 PM

How about neither tune, OP?
