Universities In India And Pakistan Are Offering Free Tuition To Transgender Students

“The transgender community has a great desire to acquire and complete their education.”

by Kristina Marusic 10h ago

Universities in both India and Pakistan have begun offering a free college education to transgender students.

In April, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu waived tuition for transgender students at all ten of its campuses. Last week, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in Islamabad, Pakistan, followed suit.

Trans students admitted to either university can pursue their degree for free, all the way up through the doctoral level.

“If we can create a favorable condition for acquiring better educational qualifications, it will enable [transgender people] to occupy enviable positions in government or private institutions,” MSU vice-chancellor K. Baskartold The Hindu Times.

Trans activists in Pakistan applauded the decision.

“This is a positive, welcome and much-needed step by the AIOU,” Uzma Yaqoob, founder of the The Forum for Dignity Initiatives, told Arab News. “The transgender community has a great desire to acquire and complete their education. I’m sure they’ll make use of this offer.”

While trans women, known as hijras, have been a part of Indian culture for centuries, they have faced harassment and persecution in more recent generations: Both countriesreport high rates of rejection, poverty, and anti-trans violence and murder.

There have been concerted efforts to improve conditions, though: Trans people in both India and Pakistan can choose a third gender on their passports and government IDs. In India, federal laws provide comprehensive anti-discrimination protections and similar legislation was introduced in Pakistan, which just began counting trans people in the official census this year.

Many of the hijaras (trans "women") are just gay men. This is just another way to make sure that male homosexuality is not accepted.

by Anonymousreply 1November 30, 2017 7:49 AM

Are they giving tuition to the thousands of women violently raped there every year?

No, of course not.

by Anonymousreply 2November 30, 2017 8:02 AM

Once they complete their paid-fir degrees, will anyone in India give them a job?

I bet not, I think the cultural exclusion of hijaras is as entrenched as the exclusion of untouchables.

by Anonymousreply 3November 30, 2017 8:14 AM

Thousands of women, R2? More like every woman in India has been sexually assaulted, if not raped.

by Anonymousreply 4November 30, 2017 8:19 AM

Good god.

Wonder if Bob Jones., Liberty, and BYU, would do rhis?

by Anonymousreply 8February 1, 2018 9:55 PM

So this is kinda so persuade gays to turn trans?

by Anonymousreply 9February 1, 2018 9:58 PM

American institutions need to give gays free tuition.

You fucking Right Wing assholes.

SOS everyday.

by Anonymousreply 12February 1, 2018 10:26 PM

Half of India has no toilet.

They do it in the streets.

[quote] Trans students admitted to either university can pursue their degree for free, all the way up through the doctoral level.

And what about the other gay & straight people, born into poverty, who want to pursue a higher state education for free too?

Do they have to resort to chopping off their cocks to get a chance at a better life, on par with the T?

by Anonymousreply 14February 1, 2018 10:42 PM

WTF is this? Do indian and Pakistani politicians have a tranny fetish?

by Anonymousreply 15February 1, 2018 10:45 PM

The Ts & allies in the west will support this for how 'progressive and accepting' these 3rd-world countries are without examining how gays and lesbians are continuously shat on there.

by Anonymousreply 16February 2, 2018 5:46 AM

R16 How much activism have you done to help them? Or do you just sit on the sidelines and complain when another group recieves assistance?

by Anonymousreply 17February 2, 2018 5:49 AM

R16 Please don't use the word "shat".

The people of India do it in the street and in the rivers.

Graduating with a Phd from an Indian or Pakistani university has less worth than flunking out of the first grade in Camden.

by Anonymousreply 20February 2, 2018 12:16 PM

Pakistan imprisons people for homosexuality. Wake up! This is about promoting T to wipe out homosexuality. T and straight are your "choices." Like Iran. And "LGBT " sites in the West are cheering it on as they do with the transing of gay-ish kids.

Indians in the US get jobs based on degrees from universities that the hiring manager has never heard of, and never checks with. How do you confirm a degree from a “university” in Madras?

by Anonymousreply 22February 2, 2018 2:17 PM

This also might be a ruse to get them out of the country. With a university degree, they can immigrate to countries where they'll be more accepted by society, and able to contribute to it as educated people.

by Anonymousreply 23February 2, 2018 2:31 PM

r20, half of Silicon Valley/Microsoft/IBM/AI etc are South Asians educated at Indian and Pakistani universities. Your racist sense of superiority is hilarious. Perhaps if you were better educated, you'd be better informed and less ignorant.

Hijras (people who blur the lines between male and female) have been an accepted part of traditional South Asian cultures (both Hindu and Muslim) for centuries, so of course it's easier for them to win acceptance there.

by Anonymousreply 24February 2, 2018 2:42 PM

Uh no, R24. The south Asians employed I the tech industry are educated in the US. If you think somebody with an Indian degree is going to get hired in tech, I've got a bridge I'd like to ask you.

They get a bachelor's degree in India. Then they compete like crazy to get into computer science programs in the US, get master's degrees or PhDs and then struggle to get hired. Because the thing they all realize is that no matter what you do, there are always 10,000 other Indians who are clones of you, willing to do it cheaper.

r25, this is Apple's massive tech facility in India, staffed by locally-educated technicians and IT specialists. Microsoft has similar facilities there. India's middle class is 250 million people.

Hijra (presenting as female) is the sole way gay men can live openly in Muslim societies and in India. While still socially marginalized, the social harrassment, ostracism, and censure is slightly less brutal.

by Anonymousreply 29May 3, 2018 9:53 AM

Indians will pretend to be trans to get their bit of paper to help make the move to the West.

I thought the same thing, r2:

[quote]“The female community has a great desire to NOT GET RAPED.”

by Anonymousreply 32May 29, 2018 8:08 PM

Why, r11?

According to fun feminists. renting out your orfices to strange penises is EMPOWERING.

by Anonymousreply 33May 29, 2018 8:11 PM

[quote] this is Apple's massive tech facility in India, staffed by locally-educated technicians and IT specialists.

No, R25, no. That's Apple's massive new headquarters in Cupertino, California.

by Anonymousreply 34May 29, 2018 8:16 PM

R24, “Hijras” are born male & dress female.

They are not androgynous people. They are effeminate men.

Forcing effeminate men to become women is barbaric.

by Anonymousreply 35May 29, 2018 8:20 PM

Are these scholarships contingent on getting one's wiener hacked off, or can any man willing to wear a dress qualify?

And are they open to those born female? This is something I've noted before, that male-to-female or male-to-third-sex transitions are much more common that female-to-male in conservative societies. Men who aren't masculine may be given some options in religious or patriarchal societies, usually pretty bad ones, but women don't seem to be allowed any options but being a womb on two legs.
