Ryan Murphy Fox Drama ‘9-1-1’
Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, and Peter Krause work as members of various branches of Los Angeles’ emergency response teams. Premieres January 3, 2018.
I'm so happy to see Krause on my TV again but using animal cruelty as a joke gets this an immediate no from me, unfortunately.
Your thoughts on the trailer, the cast, the name of the series...?

But why is he in everything fuckin' thing? Dude has been in show after show since Six Feet Under. He has literally been in a TV show for 20 years. No breaks.

R11 I was thinking the same thing. He already has tons of shows. Brad Falchuk is listed as co-creator so maybe he's more in charge. I don't see this show lasting more than one season. There are talented people in the cast, but procedural fans are already hooked on the CBS shows and Dick Wolf's Chicago shows on NBC.

R13 Ha! I knew someone would make that joke soon enough. I hate, hate snakes but even so, I firmly believe you shouldn't use either animal abuse or animal cuteness to add dramatic weight in TV and movies. It's just a cheap trick that's discouraged in Screenwriting 101.
Also, it's just my gay self and my gay-ass parrot in my household. And that little bitch abuses [italic]me[/italic] all the time.

Good ratings for the first episode.
“9-1-1” built on its “X-Files” lead in at 9, drawing a 1.8 and 6.8 million viewers. That marks a 29 percent jump in the demo and a 30 percent jump in total viewers. “9-1-1” was also the top-rated show of the night and the higest-rated Wednesday premiere on Fox in over a year.

In more interesting Ryan Murphy news:
American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy is thinking way past 2018. Murphy revealed during the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour in Pasadena on Friday that season eight of AHS will take place in the—wait for it—future.
“All I’ll say about it is I want to go to the future — still topical, but the future, which I’ve never done,” Murphy said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
This probably means it'll be years, maybe decades, after season 7's present-day setting in Trump's America—but it could be a look at the aftermath. And even though he's keeping quiet about other details, we do know what the season is not about: outer space, as Murphy confirmed.
The writers won't start working on the script until February, but the storyline has been approved by FX. “I pitched it to [FX chief] John Landgraf today right after his TCA panel, and he loved it, but he’s asked me not to say what it is,” Murphy said. “I told him, and he fell out of his chair with joy. I think people will like it; it’s different from what we’ve done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I’ve done on that show.”

R36 And all of them turn to shit halfway into the season because he doesn't bother finishing them but just dumps it on the co-showrunner and moves on to the next project.
R35 Angela Bassett was live-tweeting the show and I saw quite a large portion of black Twitter tuned in because of that. But they mostly commented on the shock value, which I don't think is really sustainable in the long run.

Obviously it's cheaper and lazier for a Hollywood production company to just point the camera out the window and shoot a program in Los Angeles, but I also suspect another reason there have been SO MANY variations of this same show may be that giving such handjobs to the LAPD police and prosecutors helps the producers buy their way out of trouble when some underage extra makes accusations.
Having such friends has lately been very useful to Harvey.

Are you talking about Henrietta Lacks (the one Oprah made the movie about). R108? It wasn't her blood that was remarkable, it's that she had tissue cells that survive and can be endlessly grown in the lab without dying off, which finally permitted in-depth testing of various drugs and treatments. Before her, scientists could keep samples alive long enough to complete testing.

R112, there's only lesbian action.
Although in this past episode called "Full Moon (WAF)" there was a gay couple, and one of them had a tape worm that started crawling out of his ass because he ate too much sushi, and one of the paramedics had to pull it out of his butt.
It was really disgusting.

I think they were just taking it from a recent story in the news R116, where something like that really happened.
Basically the face-eating zombie guy and the tapeworm guy were both real people in the news, and the show made stories out of them.
They didn't just make it up.

I thought Connie Britton looked great during her Friday Night Lights days. But, she has already started to age badly. The pairing of her character with a young firefighter is dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | March 12, 2018 1:56 PM
|
Is she aging badly or just aging?-- the premiere of Friday Night Lights was over ten years ago. At the time she would have been around 40 -- now she is around 50. Not that you cannot still look good at that age, but you are less likely going to be "hot" to attract the young stud.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 12, 2018 2:13 PM
|
Aside from the question of looks -- after all, the young stud could have a thing for older women -- there is no on-screen chemistry between the two actors. Britten brings an innate intelligence and emotional sensitivity to her role, which makes the pairing with a young, dumb stud all the more ridiculous. Meanwhile, she and Krause really connected in their brief scenes.

I love this show too. It strikes the right balance between soapy drama, action and absurd situations Murphy is known for. I actually think its his best show on air right now. Angela Bassett is amazing. I miss Connie Brittons character and her exit was a little weird but they are making up for it now. J Love is a surprisingly suitable replacement. I liked the backstory episode about Hen.

R159, I've tried to watch this show and have the opposite reaction to your assessment. I don't find any of it plausible. What was with that absurd storyline for Hen, the black lesbian at the firehouse? All of a sudden she feels put upon by some cromagnum fire chief? No one is coming to her aid throughout the hour? ugh...

This show is so beneath Bassett (just as it was Connie Britton, and is Peter Krause and Aisha Hinds) that I almost feel sorry for them -- until I realize they all probably make more money from this than anything else they've ever done. This retread of the 1970s-era "Emergency" series is not at all what I envisioned for any of these actors.

A 10 pound bag of holiday episode clichés thrown into this one: Marine returning home, gets in a random truck/bus accident, assists the medics in saving a life, and they return the favor by driving him sirens blaring to his daughter’s Xmas pageant just in time to hear her sing “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”.

Spinoff with Rob Lowe.
The new entry in the budding franchise is titled “9-1-1: Lone Star.” It follows a sophisticated New York cop (Lowe) who, along with his son, re-locates to Austin, Texas, and must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in his own life.
Sources say Lowe stands to make more than $200,000 per episode for his role on the show, which is slated to premiere during the 2019-2020 season. The series hails from “9-1-1” co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear.

I doubt they’ll do a gay story between two hot main characters. Whenever there’s gay male characters on network tv, they’re always presented as nerdy or they’re side characters, OR their personalities are only their sexuality. We’ve never gotten a gay storyline from masculine main characters on a broadcast TV show and something tells me this won’t be the one to shatter the rainbow glass ceiling.

I just started watching this show. It's good, don't get me wrong, but a couple of things annoy the hell out of me. First, I love Connie Britton but her character is the most annoying character I've ever seen on any tv show. Her character is just too perfect and nice and sweet. What are her flaws? Every other character is flawed and multi-dimensional except hers. Also, we are following a fire department, but where are the fires? At least on another tv show Station 19 we get to see them fight fires. I'm on episode 6 now, not one single fire so far. Station 19 has a mix of fires and other emergencies, I wish 911 had that too. Like, I get that only some emergencies are fires, but why not have both, like Station 19? It's just weird watching a fire department not put out one single fire.

What if the statement means that Buck and Eddie are NOT getting together, so the fangirls should stop hoping. but maybe that's not the whole story? What if they really do make Buck bi or gay? I've been watching and I actually do think they've been hinting at Buck's sexuality for a while now. Eddie? Nah, he seems straight. Buck on the other hand... he definitely has a crush on Eddie, even called him cute, lol. Anyways, I think either the writers will make Buck bi or gay, or he'll continue to be straight and they will continue to gaybait (most likely).

I binged the show and I really want to like it, but they have a problem with gay characters. On the one hand we have a wonderful lesbian couple, who gets to kiss and be affectionate. On the other we have a gay recurring character, the ONLY character without a love life. Not only that but now he has a brain tumor so we might end up with yet another dead gay character, yay! Remember that montage of the gay elderly couple spending their lives together? Well... they showed everything EXCEPT a kiss. That part was cut out, of course. WHAT THE FUCK?! Why is a gay kiss not allowed on FOX? Oh and btw, I have a feeling they added a gay couple to the spin off because they knew killing off the only loveless/sexless gay character on 9-1-1 would create a backlash. This way they can say "we don't deserve the backlash because we have lesbians on 9-1-1 and gays on the spinoff", a spinoff that will probably end up getting cancelled, mind you. Again, this is a cheap cop out because they don't have the balls to actually treat the one gay character they have with respect, not to mention the pathetic depiction of Buck and Eddie who clearly have feelings for each other, but it will never happen because this show is terrified of showing gay affection.

I've recently started watching and it's AWFULLY written, I seriously couldn't believe Ryan Murphy was attached to it at first (say what you want, but he's never even touched this particular brand of bad), and yet it's super fun to binge. Just mindless entertainment, I never found myself bored. Oliver Stark is great to look at, I hope he does a nude scene sometime soon (not in this obviously). It ain't Ibsen, but it's entertaining enough.

R243, it is both awful and entertaining therefore, IMHO, it's not awful at all.
I don't think the writers planned on Buck and Eddie -- even their couple name 'Buddy' is intimate -- having such a following.

Both Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman (the hottie who plays Eddie) are on board with the Buddy stuff, pressed to make their characters gay, and are very active allies to the community. Ryan in particular has thrown us plenty a bone.
Fox is the thing standing in the way of major male characters on 9-1-1 being gay, never forget that. It's always the networks/channels/streaming services.
