Their governor, Jim Justice, is humongous. One of the largest men I have ever laid eyes on in real life.

It is a beautiful state, but filled with West Virginians. A very ignorant, close-minded, trashy culture. And now the heroin epidemic and wrecking havoc there.

Slack-jawed hillbillies who all voted for Trump.

What r2 said. We went to visit a friend of my mother's once. While he lived on a Colonial estate, once I walked off his property, I saw a woman beating laundry on a rock or washboard at a creek.

Mountain people.

I have an old friend from West Virginia and her and her family are some of the most genteel people I have ever met. I escorted her to her senior prom and was surprised to find be held at the Greenbrier. There is an upper class there but most are more like the White family who are famous mountain cloggers from West Virginia. The movie below is an example of that lifestyle.

It's a state where large parts of the country side and the population have been decimated by the rest of the country's need for electricity.
Good change the electricity driving whatever device you're using to post to DL came from the people you take pleasure in ridiculing.
Now thanks to Trump's foolish economic message and Clinton's inability to explain her economic plan we are back on track to destroying more people and more land.

R17:
[quote] Natural gas surpassed coal last year as the most common source for electricity generation in the United States, according to a Post analysis of preliminary data from the Energy Information Administration. Coal was responsible for a majority of electricity generation at the start of the century and was still the source for nearly half in 2008 but has fallen steadily, accounting for 30 percent last year. Natural gas powered 34 percent of the country's electricity last year, passing coal as well as nuclear.
Nevertheless, West Virginia does look like it has some beautiful rural and nature areas, what with the rivers and forests.

Deplorables not withstanding, WV is a beautiful state, particularly this time of year. Harpers Ferry is particularly lovely and Morgantown & Charleston aren't bad. I travel to west to Ohio frequently and WV isn't as hard core Trump as Ohio or even rural areas of WV.

I've been there several times, but never stayed overnight.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 10, 2017 10:36 PM |
Beautiful state--the Appalachians are more interesting there than in places further South or East. Doesn't get tourists like the retiree-ridden Skyline Highway/Blue Ridge Parkway, which means you avoid a lot of annoyances. People there can surprise you--more than once I've been in very simple places and heard more interesting conversation than I'd casually encounter in DC. A lot of people with connection to the land and nature, with very active grassroots conservation groups. But also tremendous poverty and people living in places where you can't imagine anyone scratching out a living. Still, I think it's far more beautiful than places people seem to know better and treat with less disrespect like kudzu and strip mall ridden North Carolina.

Beautiful state but very, very poor. Lots of mobile homes with huge satellite dishes in rural areas. I lived in Charleston for a year and couldn't wait to get away. I grew up in a town of 2000 in the mid-west so I know rural but these people were hillbillies. I taught at the University of Charleston which is a small private college. It was very strange. Most of the students were from out of state and were rejects from Ivy league schools. The university was right on the river so it had a really good rowing program and many of them were there for crew. Most were business or liberal arts majors. The university also had a good size population of local students who were on scholarship. It was like night and day. The university also had a large nursing and pharmacy program. Most of those students were local as well. Very diverse. It was hard teaching because they had so little shared experiences in their background. The rich kids had traveled the world and the locals had never been outside of WV. I took a group of students out to the rural areas for a theater outreach program for grade school kids. There were times when I was literally scared and thought "What the fuck am I doing out here." Charleston was nice. Had one gay bar if I remember correctly and one adult bookstore.

Born and raised in WV, attended West Virginia University for undergraduate degree. Obtained my post graduate degree out of state but chose to return to WV for a business opportunity. Having been fortunate enough to travel a good amount in Europe and the US, I still chose to remain living in WV. The state has many of the qualities (and weaknesses) mentioned by above posters. Native West Virginians are loyal, hardy, and determined folks who recognized the basic goodness of the natural beauty of the state and are willing to forgo many urban perks for the solitude the rugged terrain affords. Truly a beautiful state during the summer & fall and a welcome respite to visit.

I lived on the Va/WVa border in the sixties as a kid. The people are decent and hard working; and, believe it or not, there is a small haute bourgeoisie contingent even within this land of paper and coal procurement.

That is a weird comparison. North Carolina has pockets of civilization at least. You have progressive cities like Asheville, Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte. You have Duke and UNC which are globally regarded universities.
West Virginia....is West Virginia, it is a completely provincial deadzone.

That's nice r48, I'm not here to sing their praise as the best cities, but [italic]compared to West Virginia[/italic], those places might as well be fucking Manhattan. They still have people that are educated, liberal, and know a little something of the world outside of their own backyard.

what you need is that "Appalitia" guy from the other thread.
West Virginia is gorgeous, but the people are, statistically, more poor and uneducated than most. It is a very Trump-friendly place. Every single county went for him, including the ones with their small "cities." The West Virginians I've met were decent people, despite the mass delusion that Donald Trump is worth voting for. And of course like any place the state does have a liberal minority.

THEre is the Greenbrier and the rest which is flyover country.
The interesting thing is, when Mondale (and I think Carter '80 and Dukakis) ran, West Va was one of the few (and in '84 I think only other than Minnesota) to go Dem - which back then was red btw.
And now it's redder and red. How things change. Like people don't believe me when I tell them New Jersey used to be a huge battleground state , and when Clinton won it back in '92 they were breaking out the champagne at headquarters.
My family is from Jersey and trust me it's much more conservative then you would think, especially the sections my parents were from (i.e. The nice parts).

Charleston is the capital and I believe the population is down to 45,000. And that's the biggest city in the state. Sad.

R58 The Greenbrier is most certainly not a dump. It may not be your cup of tea, but upper middle class and upper class families have been vacationing there since the forties. The golf is great and I cannot think of any other family resort which offers so many outdoor activities.

The state is a dump and the fatty governor owns The Greenbrier, which when it lost one of its Michelin stars a "star" columnist of the Charleston paper wrote "We don't need no high falutin 5 star venues in West By God Virginia."
