Monday nights @ 10pm/9c on ABC. Anyone else watching? It's pretty good for a network drama.

Love Freddie Highmore
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 3, 2017 4:06 AM |
I love Freddie Highmore also. Weak american accent aside, he was fantastic on Bates Motel.
But the reviews for this were not great, and don't think I am going to commit to a network drama.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 3, 2017 4:09 AM |
It's too soon. I just see Norman Bates as a doctor.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 3, 2017 4:16 AM |
I'd sooner trust Barron to operate on me
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 3, 2017 4:21 AM |
Not bad. He is a good actor.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 3, 2017 4:38 AM |
Is this an update of the Magical Negro trope - the Miraculous Autistic. "He doesn't know how to socialize. Or react to social cues. But, dammit! He KNOWS how to save lives!"
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 3, 2017 5:29 AM |
Yup, Greg House (same producer) meets Rainman meets Doogie. Could be interesting if they have the right entourage of doctors and other personnel. Romantic storylines could be dicey if they want to appear realistic but not offensive.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 3, 2017 8:08 AM |
Stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 3, 2017 8:10 AM |
Not even Richard Schiff can make me watch network TV.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 3, 2017 8:13 AM |
I love it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 3, 2017 11:17 AM |
R8 Yeah, the aspies in the AV Club comment section are all outraged that this was even greenlit.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 3, 2017 11:44 AM |
I like it a lot. I have not seen Freddie Highmore in anything before.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 3, 2017 11:51 AM |
[quote] Yeah, the aspies in the AV Club comment section are all outraged that this was even greenlit.
I'm an Aspie, and I don't understand why any other Aspie would be outraged. His is a very credible performance. His freaking out about the screwdriver was very realistic. As an Aspie, what bothered me is that they didn't show him clean up his apartment after he messed it up. Even vicariously I wanted that room back to how it should be.

R17, would you have thrown everything out of drawers that way? I thought he might have been much more organized in his search techniques.

How are the ratings for "The Good Doctor"?

It appears to be winning in its timeslot (as of 10/16/17).
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 17, 2017 7:39 PM |
Would like to play doctor with him. Hope he doesn't go out with that neighbor whore. Get your own batteries for your vibrator bitch

That would normally be the case, but at times when something about which one has a particular fixation one gets very frustrated and the usual OCD-type organization and processes go out the window to a degree.

Adrian Monk had more issues than a news stand and he was a great detective.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 20, 2017 6:57 PM |
More people watch this show than "The Big Bang Theory." America loves autistic geniuses.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 20, 2017 7:05 PM |
Requires an enormous amount of willing suspension of disbelief. Don’t see where the story is going bc the miracle save of the week and social awkwardness with colleagues and patients is going to get old quickly. Operating on a donor liver in a convenience store is already pretty close to jumping the shark!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 20, 2017 7:09 PM |
Good to know. This is the only new show I watch, and the only show I look forward to all week.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 20, 2017 7:16 PM |
R25 and if the slushee cooking technique wasn't enough then they took the liver out in sunlight on the trunk of the police cruiser, stuck in nasty polluted highway traffic to remove some clot or something. Very sanitary. Calling the donor "Oliver" was cute, tho.

Damn autocorrect- cooling not cooking.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 24, 2017 2:29 AM |
I was excited about it from the previews, but I lost it at the first episode. I never watch network TV and that weird blueish hazy cast made me feel I was being sublimated.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 24, 2017 3:01 AM |
I guess I mean subliminalized.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 24, 2017 3:04 AM |
Well tonight's episode felt a bit more "grounded in plausible reality". Interesting underlying theme of honesty and where it may be good or bad. Reminded me a bit of Chicago Hope that always seemed to have more legal/philosophical issues than ER back then. The kid telling his parents he was looking forward to being with his deceased relatives (when earlier he told the doc he didn't believe in heaven) was well played. More of this and less of Dr McGuyver, please.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 24, 2017 2:40 PM |
Not gonna lie, I teared up at the end of the episode. When he read the ending of the book (that apparently his own brother couldn't finish) to the sick boy was so so sad.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 25, 2017 12:25 AM |
r34 He left the book with the boy, right? I wasn't quite clear on that.

Yes, and took the bookmark.

R19,
ABC’s [Italic]The Good Doctor[/Italic] is a Top 10 hit.
It has defeated CBS’s [Italic]Scorpion[/Italic] in that time slot.
NBC’s [Italic]The Brave[/Italic] and [Italic]Scorpion[/Italic] are battling for second in that time-slot with the former narrowly ahead.
[Italic]Scorpion[/Italic] ranked Nos. 15, 17, and 22 its first three seasons (2014–15; 2015–16; 2016–17). It was moved from 9 to 10 p.m. ET with its third season. And it has a dropoff, compared to this time last year, of just over 25 percent. That is not good. But, it—and [Italic]The Brave[/Italic]—are above 40th place so far for the season.
I will provide a link for more informative. (I’ve been referencing total viewers.)
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 25, 2017 10:59 PM |
I want to add…because it is an immediate hit, ABC has [Italic]The Good Doctor[/Italic] for the entire season. A full season.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 25, 2017 11:01 PM |
What's so unusual about it. Three quarters of surgeons are on the autistic scale. They are only happy dealing with unconscious people and incapable of communicating in normal conversation. Trust me I have family members who are surgeons .
Also a friend was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. he went to see the surgeon who barely looked at him who spent the whole session showing him vids of the new keyhole machine and raving about it.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 25, 2017 11:18 PM |
What's a "keyhole machine"?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 25, 2017 11:28 PM |
a machine for assholes who have keys?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 26, 2017 2:02 AM |
I think I like this show, but I’m already tiring of the weird, distinctive, “autistic voice.” I’m thinking it will wear pretty thin week after week. I talk this way to my husband until he says “uncle.”
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 26, 2017 2:16 AM |
I know autism often presents with speech characteristics but I hope they actually did some research on this. From here sounds s bit Stephen Hawking-esque.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 26, 2017 2:24 AM |
Sounds more like upspeak?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 26, 2017 4:22 PM |
With a full week of DVR and on-demand playback counted for the week of Oct. 9, “The Good Doctor” is the most-watched show on TV with 18.22 million viewers. It's Adult 18-49 rating (4.2) ranked behind only "This is Us" (5.0) and "The Big Bang Theory" (4.5).

It's trying to warm us up to AI health care providers.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 26, 2017 5:38 PM |
Highmore is not only a talented actor but also, a very talented director. Regardless of the success or failure of "The Good Doctor" this kid has a bright future ahead of him.
I could have easily enjoyed at least another five seasons of "Bates Motel." Freddy and Vera were a dynamic duo!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 26, 2017 5:51 PM |
This week’s episode with the autistic patient and the parents who don’t trust the autistic doctor was odd. In a way it was a good plot device to force doubters on staff to come around and support Shaun and his medical abilities, but the whole thing felt a little lazy and hamfisted with a side of “very special episode”.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 15, 2017 8:02 PM |
I'm enjoying it! And I love Richard Schiff in anything.
This week's episode with the good looking British doctor letting the old man die was pretty moving.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 15, 2017 8:09 PM |
This is a fantastic show.
This past weekend they were showing Charlie and the chocolate factory and Freddie was so cute!
He’s come a long way.
Love how he’s being more assertive now. He wants a tv, dammit!!!
I also love Schiff.

Love it! The doctors don't seem as realistic as the ones on Grey's Anatomy but I still love it.

I like it, too. I wonder if they're going to give him a romantic interest at some point.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 16, 2017 2:43 AM |
Oh, poop on you, R48. I love this show. It doesn't need to be "accurate." It's charming. And I do not want to see it get Shonda-ized, R52. Not at all.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 16, 2017 2:50 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 16, 2017 3:16 PM |
I think the neighbor with the loud music just friendzoned him. The only guy who is brutally honest... she’ll be over complaining after every breakup wth other guys.
Hands up and give me your wallet - I cannot do both. HIlarious and tragic all at once.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 21, 2017 6:52 PM |
I watched part of last night's episode. The finicky robotic delivery of his lines got old real fast. And the writers of these new medical shows think that just following the original manic reality of working in an E.R. is enough to sustain interest. Speaking of E.R it is getting a second life on cable with several episodes airing daily and a twelve hour block of episodes on weekends. Watching it is like visiting old friends. I love it. There is no medical drama in the past 20 years that comes close to the quality of that show. The writing, the diverse cast, the great acting, and just plain good story telling is sorely missed.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 21, 2017 8:08 PM |
Fuck auto-correct and Apple. I typed gimmicky R2, not finicky.

Reminds me of when I took my father to see his surgeon for him to see how effective his throat cancer treatment had been - and the surgeon spent half an hour talking to me about Procol Harum because I'd remarked on the photo of them he'd hung on the wall of his office.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 21, 2017 8:15 PM |

r63, I like this show more than you liked ER, which I found to be the least interesting medical show ever, except for post-13 House. I hope David Shore doesn't fuck The Good Doctor up that way in season 3.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 21, 2017 9:28 PM |
He probably wanted to eat your butt, R66, instead of discussing your father's with him.

How ABC Found a Surprise Hit in ‘The Good Doctor’:
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 22, 2017 6:19 AM |
Well, I worked as a nurse for forty years so I have some frame of reference when it comes to what I find believable and compelling about a t.v drama based on what happens in an actual E.R. and the people who work in trauma medicine. I was bored by The Good Doctor and the actor who plays him and prefer re-runs of E.R to most of the recent medical dramas. It's a personal preference not a pissing contest, r68.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | November 26, 2017 1:56 PM |
And yet, R71, here you are, taking another leak.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 26, 2017 1:57 PM |
Please, R63, Chicago Hope was by far the superior medical drama of the day.
Better actors, storylines and everything else. Fuck ER
I’m loving The Good Doctor. Next weeks episode looks fantastic. He finally snaps! 😳
by Anonymous | reply 73 | December 1, 2017 6:11 PM |
Well this was an interesting episode, showing the complexity of his character. On one hand he sees symptoms that all the others ignore and ends up saving that pro gamer's life (death vs partial paralysis, tough call). And at the same time he's sleeping in the janitor's room and goes off the deep end at the end of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 5, 2017 9:30 AM |
R42, I think you're lucky he doesn't slap you silly.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 5, 2017 9:53 AM |
Bullshit SJW premise. "We must be accepting of all for nobody is truly handicapped or limited when we believe in them". You can have my share of it.
And LOTSA luck finding an insurance carrier that would provide malpractice insurance for a child doctor with this diagnosis of record.

The Good Doctor falls in love.

The Good Doctor gets schooled on preferred pronouns as he treats a young trans patient with testicular cancer. Some interesting debate with the grandmother accusing the parents of child abuse via puberty blockers, and mention of other side effects.

[bold]‘Good Doctor’ Renewed for Season 2 at ABC[/bold]
[quote]The medical drama has been the undisputed freshman hit of the 2017-2018 season. It is currently averaging a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 9.8 million viewers per episode in the Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings, making it the second highest-rated show on ABC, behind only “Grey’s Anatomy.” It’s continued strong ratings, both in Live+Same Day and in delayed viewing, all but guaranteed the show a second season. ABC previously picked it up for a full season after airing just two episodes.
[quote]“The Good Doctor’s message of inclusiveness resonates with our viewers and is a hallmark of what we aim to accomplish here at ABC,” said Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment. “This series has quickly joined the zeitgeist and broken records in the competitive television landscape. We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Shaun Murphy will be back for another season.”

Good news
by Anonymous | reply 82 | March 13, 2018 10:41 PM |
I admittedly haven't watched the show, but from clips I've seen, the main character is just Norman Bates in a white coat. Same hairstyle, speech, mannerisms, etc. FH was talented as a child actor, but I wonder if he's become something of a one-trick-pony, talent wise. I wonder if the reason why he gets cast in these type of roles in the US is because of how he sounds doing an American accent. He is decent, but you can tell that he's really focused on it, which would be distracting in any other role, but actually works for characters like Norman and the Aspie doctor.
BTW I want to hear more real life stories of people's experiences with doctors/surgeons on the spectrum.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | March 13, 2018 11:06 PM |
Freddie Highmore is listed as a producer of this show. Does that help his bottom line?
by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 21, 2018 7:39 PM |
Daniel Dae Kim is one of the producers but that didn't prevent the remake getting whitewashed. Aspie Highmore was supposed to be KOREAN!
Didn't a Meryl spawn get a doctor show of her own? I was going to check it out but it got cancelled mid season.
I guess acting prowess skips a generation.

Well, that's disappointing. I had no idea.

That would be like saying Brian in QAF should be British. The Good Doctor is based on a Korean TV series.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 21, 2018 9:17 PM |
r88 That example falls apart under closer scrutiny because there are Asian Americans who desperately need representation on TV, while Brits do not.

I liked the season finale.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | March 28, 2018 9:10 PM |
Good for the actress for getting a regular gig, but I really don't know why they feel the need to bring back the neighbor/love interest. It's just a boring distraction that serves no other purpose than to deep-six any question the show's female audience might have as to Shawn's sexual orientation (i.e., "Fear not, ladies. He may be different but he ain't gay").
by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 4, 2018 12:45 AM |
