Looking forward to seeing this film and kind of hoping the chances of Jake Gyllenhaal finally winning a best actor Oscar or at least another nomination are close to being realised. Some of his performances in recent years felt definitely wrongly overlooked at the oscars.
Jake Gyllenhaal latest film Stronger and his performance in it getting great early reviews tipping it as Oscar Worthy

I go to imdb to check on this movie I just glance at the cast. The girl from Orphan Black, Miranda Richardson and Clancy Brown. I'm interested.
I'm sure Jake was almost nominated for Nightcrawler he was great and got a SAG nod.

[quote]The movie is pure Oscar bait.
So what? Julianne Moore won her Oscar for her least worthy performance in a terrible movie that she only could have taken in the hope of winning an Oscar. That's the way it sometimes goes. I know DiCaprio is hated here but he took on a variety of challenging parts and went full throttle with them for years. His throttle is kind of weak. Jake is more interesting to me. He has a haunted quality and a googly charm. Maybe all the time, but he is never a bad actor. There are a number of times he deserved a nomination.
I won't say Jake is due but he has delivered many solid performances and a few fine ones. Why are gay men so unkind to him? I suspect for the same reason the industry is. You can see he is gay.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 10, 2017 11:02 PM |
It would be nice if Jake won an Oscar if he deserved it. His performances onscreen are more convincing than his off-screen portrayal of a straight man. Too bad it didn't out between him and Austin Nichols.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 10, 2017 11:04 PM |
It's because he's closeted for me R11. But I'm. It mean, I just don't see his films. Once he comes out, I'll see his films.

If Casey Affleck can get a fucking Oscar, than Jake can at least get a nomination. Shit. I know nothing about this movie, but I know he deserved one for Nightcrawler. He was scary good in that movie. And Casey Affleck is a piece of shit. He's an arrogant punk and I can't stand him or his asshole brother Ben.

Jake in NIGHTCRAWLER was at least as good as some of these other dudes who have been nominated in the last few years.
The movie doesn't look good, but I'll probably watch it for Tatiana Maslany. LOVE HER.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 11, 2017 12:22 AM |
I saw the trailer and I got emotional. It may be Disability Inspiration Porn, but it's pretty damned inspiring and it happens to be true. I saw a picture of the guy and he looks kind of lost. I don't know how I would act if all of a sudden, with no warning, I was in an explosion and had my legs blown off and I was in my early 20's and perfectly healthy in every other respect. That would fuck me up for ever.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 11, 2017 1:02 AM |
I agree that if Casey Affleck got an Oscar, Jake probably can. But he is cast wrong all the time. He should be a star in the Dustin Hoffman, Jack Lemon vein. Romantic comedy and drama. he tries too hard and it shoes in his performances. He is a turn off to movie goers, and interviews terribly. Everything he says rings false. He is supposedly hooking up with the guy from Younger, Nico Tortorella which makes him a bit more interesting.

You're wrong about Jeff Bauman's relationship. He and his girlfriend, later wife had a rocky relationship all along.. At the time of the Marathon bombing they were broken up, and he was trying to win her back so he was raising money for her charity run, and promised her he was going to be reliable and go to the race and carry a big sign to cheer her on. He actually did. and then they bombed the race. She helped him during recovery and rehab, , they reconciled, married had a kid, they still had problems, and broke up again. Jeff is an alcoholic. He's been sober for about a year and a half. You need to read his book. It's a good story. I read it. I remember him. In fact it was kind of hard to ignore the photo of him after the bomb went off and he was wounded. It was pretty gruesome and unforgettable. And from what I 've heard the feedback on the movie is that it avoids cliches and has a lot of humor and heart. If you don't want to see a move about a disabled guy who has to struggle to kee sane and try to make sense out of his life after it has been completely fucked up, then don't. I'll see it. But then, I'm from Massachsetts.

Better than Leo or Gosling, r2. Casey only won because his movie was so good. I hope this one is better. Maybe a little luck of the Boston Irish will float Jake's way. He is still my favorite actor of his generation.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 11, 2017 2:46 AM |
Casey won because his brother and Matt Damon actively campaigned for him and they have a lot of muscle as far as Oscar campaigns go.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 11, 2017 3:21 AM |
R29, You are probably right. Jake has the same agent as Casey, Ben and Matt, Patrick Whitesell who co heads WME and is very powerful.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 11, 2017 3:25 AM |
Yeah, well if that guy is so powerful why isn't it ever Jake's turn? It seems like the Afflecks do very well in the awards department.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 11, 2017 3:27 AM |
Ben and Matt seem much smarter than Jake and they pushed Casey along. They also earn much more money for WME so what they say goes a long way.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 11, 2017 3:39 AM |
If he didn't win an Oscar for this scene, he never will.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 11, 2017 4:12 AM |
Ben and Matt are big sharks compared to Jake because they are not primarily actors. They are kind of the rat pack of late Hollywood who lucked in through business and a script and the right look and just enough talent. Inside men. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will never win an acting Oscar.
Jake is a real actor, a creative man who keeps to himself and let's his agent do business. He's pissy and a bit prissy. SEXY. Just because his films haven't been big hits doesn't mean he isn't a very good actor. He's tried most every genre and his name always makes me want to watch. I think DL must be very old fashioned and status conscious if they think that Affleck Damon and Pitt are the male powers of Hollywood. They may be great dealmakers, but no one wants to see them anymore. Ask George Clooney. I repeat. Gyllenhaal is an actor. I would have liked to see him in La La Land to be honest. He would have learned to dance and sing.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 11, 2017 4:22 AM |

There was word he'd get a nom for Demolition, but the film flopped and had a limited release. He is pretty much as bad a Leo now, every film he does seems solely a vehicle made to win him best actor.

Nightcrawler was not a "flop." He was likely in the 6th position for a nomination that year. And Rene Russo was very much in the conversation in supporting actress.

Not every nomination is based on box office. Nightcrawler was very inexpensive but it is critically acclaimed and Dan Gilroy is going to work with Jake again. [R45] I genuinely don't recall Oscar buzz or speculation around demolition but rather Nocturnal animals.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 12, 2017 6:44 PM |
Jake was excellent in the uneven Nocturnal Animals.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 12, 2017 6:48 PM |
The Oscar buzz for Nocturnal Animals was generated because it was Tom Ford's second effort following his too much acclaimed Colin Firth A Single Man movie. Also because it had Amy Adams and it was supposed to be "her year" although not for NA.
I don't recall any Oscar buzz for Demolition. But the guy who directed it, didn't he win an Oscar, or get nominated the year before? You know when all the smoke and mirrors clears, the "Academy" knows who it wants to give an Oscar to.
Anyone who didn't see Casey Affleck getting locked in early on as the "frontrunner" months before his movie even opened was blind. Same for Leo. It was Leo's "turn" with Revenant.
Whenever an actor, almost any top tier actor, opens a movie in the Fall or late summer, or WTF ever, there's always Oscar buzz used for publicity even if it's not ever going to happen. And especially if the actor is in an "Oscar-adjacent" movie with a director who is hot because he just won, or is critically acclaimed and was recently nominated.
People always say, "Well, Jake gave an awards caliber performance." And he has done that in Nightcrawler for sure, and maybe even in Nocturnal Animals although I thought Michael Shannon was the Oscar contender in supporting for that movie, along with Aaron Taylor Johnson.
Jake held his own, but there we re three heavy weight performances in NA. The person who dropped the ball IMO, was Tom Ford. The movie was visually stunning, but his adaptation and his directing fell short. So if they are saying Jake ought to get a nomination for this new movie even though it's pretty traditional and checks off a lot of boxes, I have no argument. When I see how that whole thing goes, with the awards, I like Jake, so why not, know what I'm sayin' ?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 12, 2017 11:36 PM |
Casey Affleck is a terrific actor. I hate to say it, but it's true. He's been in a number of movies and is such a natural in everything. I don't think the academy was itching to give him an oscar but his performance was that good. Jake Gyllenhaal can be good in the right roles, but most of the time he is mediocre. He's kind of like Leonardo Dicaprio to me. Always given plum roles in spite of his average talent.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 13, 2017 1:44 AM |

Controversy on the horizon.
[quote]Filmmakers have been criticised for casting Jake Gyllenhaal in the leading role of double amputee Jeff Bauman in new movie Stronger – rather than an actor with disabilities.
[quote]Campaigners said the opportunity to cast a disabled actor for the part of the Boston Marathon survivor was “overlooked”.
[quote]The Ruderman Family Foundation, which fights for the rights of people with disabilities, called it an “all too common discrimination in Hollywood”.

these type of movies are so pathetic: obvious as to its intent: for idiots who think these events unite us, we over come because of love. Its It indulges peoples needs to be part of something they weren't part of other than those directly effected. Its a movie for lonely people who need to be inspired by Hollywood manipulation of a terrible moment in peoples lives. Jake should be embarrassed.

You could not be more wrong about that R21. The Bauman character is an asshole right from the beginning. As R26 writes, the relationship was rocky before, during, and after the time in which the movie was set. No one who sees the movie will be surprised that the marriage didn't last. The acting throughout is excellent. Tatiana Maslany, who I've never heard of, is heartbreaking as the girlfriend, and Miranda Richardson as Bauman's alcoholic, messed up mother, merits an Oscar nomination of her own.

I've never found Gyllenhaal attractive but he looked awful in "Stronger". He looked so gaunt. There was even a scene early in the movie (Stronger) where someone talks about how skinny he is and I wondered if it was because the real guy was incredibly skinny or the writer just wanted to acknowledge that they know he looks sickly. I wanted to like the movie but these were really unpleasant people, even before the attack. His family and friends are so annoying I couldn't wait for the movie to be over. There is a really weird scene at the beginning where his family and friends are saying "faggot" and Jake's character tells them they can't be saying that. It has no pay off. It just shows that these people are horrible. Also a scene where his drunk friends let drunk, legless Jake drive a car is played for laughs.

Definitely think Jake is sexier with the brown eyes. Brown hair blue eyed leading men are boring. Hollywood needs to change it up.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | October 4, 2017 11:21 PM |
Sorry, stop trying so hard. Dark hair and blue eyes is killer hot. Brown eyes with dark hair is a very ordinary combination. Jake is hot except for some angles when his face looks elongated and he has this "bloodhound" look. And he has a huge head. Too big IMO for all that hair. He looks like a sleezy international gigolo from the 60's. He needs shorter hair. I saw a movie of his on TV the other night, about some guy who's wife gets killed in a car accident, and the movie was shit, but he looked hotter than I've seen him in a long time and it was the hair. Very short.
