Te darker side of Lesley Gore
Read the brutal comments from her fans:
This interview was conducted in 1980. It was also in 1980 that Lesley Gore came into the restaurant I was working in as a waiter in New York City. I complemented her on her performance in the concert film the TAMI show that was being shown at a theatre in Manhattan. When I complemented her she immediately gave me a look that could kill. All she needed to do was say "thank you." But instead she chose to respond to a compliment in a horribly rude fashion, but she also seemed extremely hostile. Is this the way that Ms. Gore treated her fans? Has anyone else experienced this with Ms. Gore? By 1980 few people recognized Lesley Gore on the street as she did not look like her 1960's self. In fact I would not have recognized Ms. Gore in the restaurant unless the host had pointed her out to me as she was totally unrecognizable by this time.

It's because she could tell you can't spell to save your life.
Oh, [italic]dear.[/italic]

Lesley Gore was a lesbian and probably suffered from a lot of internalized homophobia and anger because she couldn't 'come out' at that time.
Maybe that's why you got such a frosty reception from her. She came out later in life not that long before she died. But it was a big secret back in the day.

I'm calling bullshit on this story.

What did she say? Clearly, whoever wrote this paragraph is not creative enough to think of a horribly rude comment she could tell back in this context -- which can only mean that the story is false.

Lesley Gore was 68 years old when she died back in 2015.

If she just gave a look... that's not a rude comment. But I think such an encounter could well have happened. Remember the Taylor Dayne story from Tig Notaro. Some people feel the need to distance themselves from their past successes because the successes hang over their present and act as a reminder that things aren't going so well nowadays.
Lesley seems to have made her peace with it by the mid to late 80s, when she duetted with the likes of Lou Christie and settled into earning a living from the oldies circuit.

Never heard of her. She looks like John Goodman.

You can't expect people will be receptive to your fangurldom 24/7, OP. She might have been in a rush, or worried about something else.

I met her after a show a couple of years before she died. She came out to the lobby after the show, signed albums,CDs . She could not have been nicer or more gracious. Striking eyes. Sounded terrific btw and seemed to be an accomplished musician.
When I told her first time I saw her was on Sha Na Na’s tv show, she said she had just seen Jon Bauman (Bowzer) recently.(I think she said they had dinner.) . I thought that was really interesting considering her appearance on the show probably was 30 years earlier and kind of cool that they were friends.
Also I was towards the end of the line but didn’t feel like there was any push or rush to get out of there.

I knew her and her partner Lois. Leslie was great, and a wonderful song writer as well. She wrote "Out Here on My Own" from Fame with her brother Michael Gore. Her parents had two gay and talented children of whom they were very proud.

Where are the “brutal comments” from her fans? You mean one possibly fabricated “anecdote” from an infuriated, spelling-impaired DL Queen? FAIL.

OP, like most addled loser waitresses who are still pocketing her "pool 'em" tips after 50 years at the diner, cannot let the late Ms. Gore's "nasty look" go,
Poor Les probably couldn't hear you because she didn't speak heifter pisspot. The look on her face probably came from her thinking she was hearing a mosquito hovering in her vicinity.
Let it go, Flo. You'll be dead soon and why carry such bullshit to your grave. Excuse me - crematorium.

Lesley didn't record this but she wrote it for a movie character loosely based on herself. It certainly has her sound. Love it.

I was surprised to read that she wasn't a smoker. I guess she used improper technique because her voice didn't age all that well.

This is my Lesley Gore M&G story. She was rude, not classy, and she lost a long time fan that day. I walked into the $350 M&G and said 'hello'. She replies with 'fat' and I shook it off because I thought maybe I had heard her wrong. As I approached her and asked to do my pose she stared at me blank faced. I continued talking 'you saved my life' I say, 'you're the reason I'm alive today.' She looks me dead in the eye and says 'you'll die soon enough, fatty' and then whispered 'obesity'. I started crying, I had never felt pain like this and she started laughing and said 'are you crying? Stop it. Stop it now,' and she flicked my vagina. The photographer took the picture and I headed out of the M&G section and that's when Lesley started speaking whale to me. I still can't believe this happened. I cried writing this. I wish this weren't true but Lesley Gore is, in fact, a horrible person. Thank you.

So, the waiter says he complimented her and was a big fan yet didn't recognizer her when she came into the restaurant?

I used to see her shopping in the Saks Fifth Avenue [the flagship store in NYC]. She seemed quite modest as she went around the store on her own and didn't seem to require any special treatment.
I suppose these days someone of her stature would be surrounded by an entourage. What happened to modesty!?
