Played Carla's second husband Eddie LeBec on Cheers, but got canned (and his character killed off) after he insulted Rhea Perlman's looks on a radio show.

He was sexy on Love & War with Dame Annie Potts.

The actor had been battling cancer. Thomas’ wife Sally and his sons, Sam, Jake, and J.T., were by his side when he died on August 24, 2017, aged 69.

It's too bad he was a dick. He was a good comedic actor, but he apparently wore out his welcome after being an asshole on the set yet again back in the 1990s, maybe while filming Mr Holland's Opus, but I'm not sure. He immediately fell to D-list status.

After the Cheers thing I'm surprised he still got roles. Garry Marshall also had to fire him from Mork & Mindy.

I always mixed him up with Donnelly Rhodes from SOAP.

I remember listening to him on LA morning radio back in the '80s and early '90s. He was quite funny back then, and was a breath of fresh air compared to Rick Dees.

I only knew him from his annual appearances on Letterman. His Lone Ranger story was hilarious.

I met him at the gym years ago.

I had dropped my keys, he saw it, got off his machine and caught up with me as I was about to exit.

Really nice guy, I thought.

Rhea is known to be difficult.

When I was a gayling back in the mid-70s I had just finished fooling around with a somewhat older guy, and we were talking about who was gay in show business,, and he told me that a local DJ named Jay Thomas was known to be gay in New York circles.

I didn't know who that was, it was before he had any sceeen credits, but that info has stayed with me all these years, and I have casually followed some of his career since then.

Anyone have any more info on this?

r59 I only have vague memories of Mork and Mindy but I think he was part of a new supporting cast they brought in and got rid of the father and I think a grandmother character of Mindys.

People didn't like the new supporting cast and I think they were all let go.

I remember when he hosted that Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? show.

Trash though it was, it initially had great ratings and was scheduled to be re-broadcast. However, within two days the truth about the bachelor's creepy past, the revelation that $2 million doesn't make someone all that wealthy (there were pictures of a discarded toilet at his house), and the bride's utter revulsion at the guy sank the re-airing and any further similar projects. Frankly, good riddance, though the tidal wave of reality shows still came.

What I also remember is how much Jay Thomas went on the attack against the bride -- Darva Conger I think her name was. He railed against her, putting all the blame on her for being both money-grubbing and not giving the guy a chance. No blame on the creeper guy. No self-evaluation that, perhaps, he had signed on for the trashiest of the trash in entertainment programming. Just how she killed his chance for a great future monetary gig.

I saw a Mork & Mindy rerun today, and was reminded of hot Jay Thomas, one of my gayling days crushes. I came here and searched him to see if there was a post and was saddened to see he died last year. Now I'm bummed.

They should have made him the father of Murphy's baby. Baby needed a father and he would have been a good one. I guess they thought it would have been anti-feminist to actually have a freaking father as part of the child's life. No I'm not Dan Quayle but I agreed with him that they mocked the importance of fatherhood on that show. They never mentioned his father on the reboot either. That whole show was such a horrible concept from the get-go.
