BIG DAYTIME NAMES HEADED TO WORLD’S FIRST CHRISTIAN SOAP OPERA: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ‘HILTON HEAD ISLAND’

Donna Mills! Antonio Sabato Nobody!

Christianity and soap operas are two terms that normally don’t go together. However, the world’s first Christian soap opera is in the works and a few big name daytime stars have already signed on for what is being called a “clean soap.” What can be expected from Hilton Head Island and can it compete with Days Of Our Lives, The Bold And The Beautiful, General Hospital, and The Young And The Restless?

According to Faith Wire, Christian entertainment company PureFlix is working on Hilton Head Island. The 12-episode drama is considered a Christian soap opera, which would be the first of its kind.

Antonio Sabato Jr, who played Dante Damiano on The Bold And The Beautiful, has signed on. So has Donna Mills, who portrayed Madeline Reeves on General Hospital. Viewers will also recognize Michael Swan, who had the roles of Duncan McKechnie on As The World Turns and Adam Alexander on B&B. Game show host Wink Martindale has also agreed to be in the “clean soap.”

Recently, PureFlix CEO Greg Gudorf discussed the upcoming series on Pure Talk.

“Traditionally, soap operas have overemphasized certain parts to be able to play to an audience. The underlying drama and the underlying story can be told without that emphasis. And maybe there’s even an entry for the more typical prayer life or Christian aspect flowing in as part of that drama.” Soap operas are addicting and people tune in for the drama. In order to keep in line with Christian values, it would have to not include sex scenes and other shocking storylines. So, what would keep viewers tuned in? The details were not released. However, it is possible that there will still be scandals and drama. It would probably avoid airing intimate scenes, promoting criminals getting away with murder, and won’t have people living together out of wedlock. It would likely also have a heavy emphasis on prayer and relying on faith to get through the difficult storylines.

Some soap operas already include faith, such as Days Of Our Lives. However, religion is not the foundation of DOOL and with Hilton Head Island, it would be what the characters relied on.

Most new TV shows include teasers and spoilers to get the public excited about what is coming. This is not the case with Hilton Head Island. Gudorf said he wants viewers to see it “fresh” when it’s released on PureFlix later this year. All he would reveal is that it will have “great stories.” He added that sex and adult themes are not necessary to make a successful series.

What do you think about a “clean soap” being created? Would you be interested in watching Hilton Head Island, the world’s first Christian soap opera?

"what is being called a 'clean soap.'"

No nothing happens. the stories are about what, bake sales?

Fuck this shite.

by Anonymousreply 1August 16, 2017 10:53 PM

File under, "Only in America".

by Anonymousreply 2August 16, 2017 11:03 PM

There was a soap on some religious channel in 1981-1984.

"Faith" helped solve their problems which included adultery and drugs. But their religiosity always came first.

Looked it up: "Another Life." The guys look like Eighties Gays in this clip.

Hilton HEAD Island. Unintentionally humorous.

Why not?

by Anonymousreply 5August 16, 2017 11:17 PM

GAG!

So, no nude bedroom scenes with guys again, eh, Antonio? SAD.

Antonio Sabato Jr. is hot. You can't have credibility and pretend he's not, just because he's Christian.

I'm actually really curious about how they'd pull this off in 2017, without it becoming a Hallmark movie or the new "Touched by an Angel".

Doesn't Hallmark produce these type of sappy, cheesy, family friendly shows? Is it the daytime thing that makes this one so special?

by Anonymousreply 10August 17, 2017 12:49 AM

No mention of where or how it's going to be broadcast/streamed, etc. Do they actually have a contract with someone?

by Anonymousreply 11August 17, 2017 12:55 AM

The Christian soap Another Life aired on cable's Christian Broadcast Network from 1981 to 1984. It filmed at the CBN headquarters in Virginia Beach. CBN was founded by Pat Robinson and was one of the early cable networks, launching in 1977. Before the cable launch, CBN programming was on a handful of UHF stations in large cities.

Another Life was created by Roy Winsor, who also created Search for Tomorrow, as well as Love of Life and Secret Storm.

Oppps, that should be Pat Robertson, not Pat Robinson. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 13August 17, 2017 1:41 AM

Interestingly enough, OP of this thread is a Pro-Trump deplorable.

by Anonymousreply 14August 17, 2017 1:51 AM

Thank you, R3 and R12!

I recalled something similar from the 80s, but couldn't remember specific details. Dataloungers know so much about so many things.

by Anonymousreply 15August 17, 2017 3:12 AM

Ha! The Christians are trying to resurrect a dying genre! Father, forgive them. They have no idea what they're doing.

by Anonymousreply 16August 17, 2017 5:16 AM

"A 12-episode drama" isn't really a soap opera in the true sense of the genre. Sounds like any other cable series with a season, just with a different focus.

And as others have pointed out, this is hardly a new idea. When it first began on the radio, "The Guiding Light" was basically a religious soap opera centering around Dr. John Rutledge, a church pastor, and the lives of his family and parish members, with the theme that "faith brings happiness." His fictional sermons were even collected and published in a book.

by Anonymousreply 17August 17, 2017 6:32 AM

I'm ready for my comeback.

by Anonymousreply 18August 17, 2017 7:07 AM

Maybe this is where some of the other washed up soap actors will try to land besides the ones already on The Bay.

by Anonymousreply 19August 22, 2017 4:56 PM

Now Sabato can spread his herpes amongst THIS cast...

by Anonymousreply 20August 22, 2017 4:59 PM

Somehow I don't see Judith getting cancer, everyone prays and she is cured, little Johnny is hit by a car and every prays and he survives, Nancy has a drinking problem and she prays and is saved as riveting television.

Will they show the Christians marching in White Supremacy marches and people talking about the anti-American liberals are trying to take away their heritage? Now that might actually get viewers. Deplorable viewers.

by Anonymousreply 21August 22, 2017 5:06 PM

Sabato is a nut.

by Anonymousreply 22August 22, 2017 5:06 PM

Fingers crossed that Anita Bryant and Victoria Jackson will sing the theme song together.

by Anonymousreply 23August 22, 2017 5:23 PM

Sabato can run for political office on the show just as he wants to do in real life.

by Anonymousreply 24August 22, 2017 6:36 PM

This is somewhat off-topic, but months ago I was at my local library and on a shelf was a book titled "The Choir Director" by Carl Weber. What made the book stand out was the cover, which featured 3 black people (two women, one man); trust me, I've been to my library enough to know that this was a rare thing.

Anyway, I decide to check out the book. What a soap opera! A lot of sex, plotting, sex, desire for sex, devious wives, murder, etc... All of it taking place at a mega-church in Jamaica, Queens, NY. The author likes talking about sex.

I googled the title before posting this and it's going to be a movie... man I wish it were a TV show because Weber has written a second novel at the same church. too bad all TV is getting is HHI.

If this was really about religious people it would be nothing but lies and hypocrisy.

by Anonymousreply 26August 22, 2017 8:57 PM

Donna Mills once played a nun on Love Is A Many Splendid Thing so maybe she'll be comfortable with this.

I loved Another Life - it was beyond campy. One black female character ranted about not celebrating Halloween - 'that's the time of them devils!'

by Anonymousreply 27August 22, 2017 9:03 PM

Victoria Jackson, Candace Cameron, Kirk Cameron and Roma Downey round out the star-filled cast.

What is going to really chap my hide is if they have "villains" who are two-dimensional caricatures of ball-busting feminists and prancing, mincing homosexuals. That's the usual MO with evangelical films. They have liberals/gays/the "other" portrayed as the most horribly fake caricatures of what an Evangelical person thinks us godless heathens are like. They are constantly proving and re-proving their own confirmation bias with stuff like that.

by Anonymousreply 28August 22, 2017 9:12 PM

Please hire Missy Chik Fil A.

by Anonymousreply 29August 22, 2017 9:12 PM

Soaps are basically about jealousy and betrayal. i think you can do that w/o sex or alien abductions, but it's difficult to keep it intersting.

by Anonymousreply 30August 22, 2017 9:19 PM

Soaps are about family, r30. Just ask Irna.

by Anonymousreply 31August 22, 2017 9:23 PM

Some of you should definitely check out the Weber books for soapy action, action, action! big black men who love sex, earthy women who dig going down on a man and taking his cock and bbw who actually get some!

I man, seriously, who give a crap about some 'Christian' soap? It would only be worthwhile if Kirk Cameron were ACTUALLY raptured away while filming.

by Anonymousreply 32August 22, 2017 10:12 PM

More 'Christian' (most of them aren't, not in a way Jesús would recognize), delusion. As if most 'Christians' want to watch this crap. Utah, full of Mormons, has some of the nation's highest porn consumption because what people want in private is different from what they claim to want in public. It won't last.

[quote]Antonio Sabato Jr. is hot. You can't have credibility and pretend he's not, just because he's Christian.

Doesn't matter. I used to think Kirk Cameron was cute, but now all I can see it the right-wing bullshit he promotes. Same with Sabato. At some point, who a person is overwhelms what they look like.

by Anonymousreply 33August 22, 2017 10:36 PM

I kind of remember the Christian soap. I think there was a storyline where the ugly sister killed the bitchy pretty sister's boyfriend... it kind of reminded me of Erica Kane and her sister Silver. There was another storyline where the nice young heroine was raped, which caused problems with her doctor husband, and the family used to pray as they worked through what happened. I think the prayers were led by the mother-in-law, who served as a moral backbone for the soap.

by Anonymousreply 34August 22, 2017 10:56 PM

[quote]Doesn't Hallmark produce these type of sappy, cheesy, family friendly shows? Is it the daytime thing that makes this one so special?

Yeah, they have a few shows which are very sappy and very family friendly. From what I've heard the Hallmark shows like the movies don't really show couples having sex. I used to watch some of the Hallmark movies around Christmas time. A few years back, I watched some Lifetime Christmas movies. Yes, Lifetime and Hallmark both make cheesy movies. But, Lifetime is a a bit different. They show couples having sex and there have been a few movies that had interracial lead couples and gays/lesbians as a supporting characters. You don't really see gay characters or interracial couples on Hallmark. Lifetime's movies sometimes have better acting than Hallmark's movies.

by Anonymousreply 35August 23, 2017 2:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 39August 23, 2017 4:12 AM

So obviously no gay characters

by Anonymousreply 40August 23, 2017 4:50 AM

Didn't Antonio cheat on Virginia Madsen or his ex wife?

by Anonymousreply 41August 23, 2017 5:04 AM

This sounds absolutely shite ! Hope they air it the UK !

by Anonymousreply 42August 23, 2017 7:25 AM

They should do a Jewish soap instead: [italic]The Old and the Kvetchy[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 43August 23, 2017 9:15 AM

Whet Kim Zimmer?

by Anonymousreply 44August 23, 2017 5:14 PM

Actually, [italic]Guiding Light[/italic] started out on radio as centering around Reverend Ruthledge (Arthur Peterson, later the major on [italic]Soap[/italic]), but that aspect died down over the course of the show and never seemed to figure into the TV version.

by Anonymousreply 45August 23, 2017 10:40 PM

So if you're a washed up actor who couldn't get a role with all the other washed up actors that make up the cast of The Bay. So I guess you'll try your luck on Hilton Head which doesn't sound very interesting.

by Anonymousreply 46August 27, 2017 8:01 AM

"So obviously no gay characters "

Unless they're tortured by 'sin' and overcome their 'sinful ways' at a gay conversion camp.

by Anonymousreply 47August 27, 2017 8:06 AM

All the dregs will be there. If one could forget what schmucks Kirk and Antonio are, a scene of them fucking would be hot.

by Anonymousreply 48August 27, 2017 8:30 AM

Apparently Donna Mills plays Antonio's mother on the show and she urges him not to 'spread his seed' over the townies. She pulls out the bible and quotes from scripture over the evils of pre-marital sex and fornication without the benefit of marriage. This should be a hoot.

by Anonymousreply 49September 2, 2017 4:13 AM

Former ATWT star Rita McLaughlin Walter is coming out of retirement to play tavern owner Annie Jackson, who will dispense advice to the Hilton Head residents and try to steer those who would drink their troubles away to the church of Wink Martindale. A supernatural element of the show will include an angel girl whose appearance leads folks to the light.

by Anonymousreply 50September 2, 2017 4:19 AM

Is Sabato playing an Episcopalian or Anglican Church of England type?

by Anonymousreply 51September 2, 2017 4:28 AM

This sounds like a camp hoot. I think DL should have some hate-watching threads

by Anonymousreply 52September 2, 2017 4:39 AM

Donna, dear? It's come to this? How sad.

by Anonymousreply 53September 2, 2017 4:49 AM

Apparently every scene will have a biblical scripture passage that frames the scene. When characters talk of making a business deal someone will quote Psalm 112.5 to shame them.

by Anonymousreply 54September 5, 2017 10:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 55January 27, 2018 11:11 PM

Greenleaf is a nighttime soap that takes place in a black megachurch ministry.

by Anonymousreply 56January 27, 2018 11:19 PM

I didn't even know that this "The Bay" was a thing and that it had been on for so long. Are there other digital soaps? Who watches? Where? Sounds like they'd be grim.

by Anonymousreply 57January 28, 2018 12:47 AM

I've lost all respect for Donna Mills

by Anonymousreply 58January 28, 2018 2:48 AM

So instead of having fake sex all of the couples will be holding hands or taking long walks on the beach. The one with a gay son will pray it all away!

by Anonymousreply 59January 28, 2018 2:58 AM

Yes there are other digital soaps r57 and The Bay seems to a place for washed up soap actors and actors whose acting careers aren't really going anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 60February 15, 2018 10:16 AM

How have I never heard about The Bay? Jackie Zeman AND Heather Langenkamp?

It's not even my birthday.

by Anonymousreply 61February 15, 2018 11:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 62February 15, 2018 11:59 AM

If it keeps groups like 'Ten Thousand Bored Moms' from bitching about my favorite programs, to have their own boring shit to watch? GO FOR IT! Why would I care?

by Anonymousreply 63February 15, 2018 12:12 PM

Because its terrible r61

by Anonymousreply 64March 1, 2018 9:01 PM

They should find the Real life Jerry Falwell Christian Choir director in San Diego. Christian singer in National Enquirer reported gay scandal. Seriously would be great for show.

by Anonymousreply 65March 1, 2018 9:12 PM

Can they hire Robin Christopher? I just really want her working again.

by Anonymousreply 66March 1, 2018 9:17 PM

Every day is Sunday, and even scene will be in the Church. That Christian enough for 'em?

by Anonymousreply 67March 1, 2018 10:09 PM

It’s true. No longer must you suffer the torrid, un-Christian plot lines of Days of Our Lives or whatever. Now you can luxuriate in the sweet, sanctified Christian storylines of a new soap opera called Hilton Head Island.

“Wait,” you might be saying. “It’s true that I have always wanted this, but now that it’s here, I’m getting nervous. Will this Christian soap opera feature a lot of sex and adult themes, like those non-Christian soap operas?” Never fear, says Greg Gudorf, CEO of Pure Flix Digital.

Not only "Another Life" so hardly the first -- but Charlotte on "Sex and the City" also had a carpenter "boyfriend" for one season who wanted to move to Utah to be on a Christian soap opera. So the idea has been around forever, even in fiction.

"Another Life" was actually kind of cheesey fun. I remember a black villainess with a Bermuda accent running some kind of criminal activity. Very Eartha Kitt. Maybe that is her above, I didn't watch the clip yet.

by Anonymousreply 79March 24, 2018 12:47 AM

I thought that Donna Mills was a lesbian.

And Antonio Sabato Jr. had a kid with a woman he wasn't married to.

by Anonymousreply 80March 24, 2018 12:58 AM

Isn't all the Tyler Perry soap operas religious based? Maybe they'll have people fornicating and committing adultery so that they have to repent and shown the evil of their ways. That way they can have the sex to keep the public interested and the religious pay off.

by Anonymousreply 81March 24, 2018 1:07 AM

[quote] Isn't all the Tyler Perry soap operas religious based? Maybe they'll have people fornicating and committing adultery so that they have to repent and shown the evil of their ways.

You've obviously never watched The Haves and Have Nots, r81. It's not a religious based soap in the least bit. One of the characters, Hannah, mentions God occasionally, but that's it.

I don't watch Tyler's other shows, so I can't speak for them. However, I've never gotten the impression that Tyler is religious. Although a lot of his core audience likely is.

by Anonymousreply 82March 24, 2018 1:36 AM

Tyler's plays are more religious. Meet The Browns and House of Payne were somewhat religious.

by Anonymousreply 83March 24, 2018 2:00 AM

There's a prime time soap that set in a church but it but it has many characters who have done some not so church approved things and has lesbians on it.

by Anonymousreply 84March 24, 2018 2:05 AM

Think of the story lines. The handsome minister of the Evangelical church molested the 16 year old teen when he was a youth Minister. The patriarch is on his 3rd marriage, and had has unprotected sex with porn stars, just after his 3rd wife bore him his 6th child. Meanwhile, the local 36 year old congressman scouts the mall looking for teenage dates, his preferred intellectual age group. Betty-Lou, has angst allowing her 14 year old daughter to date the 36 year old man. She later learns, he had her 14 year old daughter grab hold on his throbbing member.

Next door, the only African Americans in town, has their son walking in the sidewalk in a menacing hoodie, and get shot by the neighborhood watch patrolman. The trial is haunting television, and the neighborhood patrol found to have stood his ground.

Side stories galore. Yet another television Minister is caught in a hotel room with a prostitute. The minister down the street is caught in a hotel room with a 17 year old male escort for counseling. Even further down the street, on a side road, the another minister is shirtless in a car with a 17 year old Grindr friend. It was a warm early spring evening.

The local schools get lots of thoughts and prayers when a fellow student enters the schools with an AR-15 and shoots 17 terms. The elementary school down the street already got their much needed thoughts and prayers after their 26 are murdered.

There is definitely a need for a religious based soap.

by Anonymousreply 85March 24, 2018 2:12 AM

R26 etc. So you girls are hating on this concept? But you would love it if it were about towel heads? Why?

by Anonymousreply 86March 24, 2018 2:43 AM

I can only a Christan soap opera where all the mexicans are stealing jobs from god fearing white people. Where no one has sex before marriage and abortion is a word only evil people use. Oh and please let them have a gay conversion story line where jesus stops a man from loving the cock!

by Anonymousreply 87March 24, 2018 4:24 AM

Nah, you'll be surprised. Same affairs and kidnappings and stock soap scenarios -- but with a little God thrown in by one character or two to validate the redemption. Wait and see.

by Anonymousreply 89March 10, 2019 11:57 PM
