Weird or Obscure Artists You're a Fan Of

For a gay forum, there's a surprising dearth of art-related threads (besides music, movies and home interiors, that is).

I've always loved the work of Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński, who was sadly murdered in an armed robbery back in 2005. It's sad to think of the talent that was forever lost. He was also quite an interesting guy. Although his paintings come across as creepy and dark, he was not the stereotypical brooding, tortured artist. He was, by all accounts, a perfectly normal, cheerful guy who thought of his paintings as optimistic. He also never named any of his paintings.

Nothing I like is obscure enough for any of these threads.

Only R3 is appealing in any way.

Leonora Carrington did strange, surreal painting and was a companion of Max Ernst.

I'm a fan of George Gobel, among others.

OP, those paintings are technically well-painted and moody but the content is depressing.

by Anonymousreply 8August 8, 2017 11:30 AM

R8 I find them aesthetically gorgeous. The content itself can be interpreted in many ways. The artist himself refused to explain or ascribe meanings to his paintings.

Anselm Kiefer's work is outwordly.

I was put-off/creeped out by Ray Caesar's work when I first saw it many years ago, but now oddly enough I'm crazy about it. It just has such a eerie glamorous vibe to it.

This stuff is a bit creepy for me, though technically well done. Hello, Dali!

Louis Wain painted cats. He was also schizophrenic. The further he descended into his illness, the trippier his paintings got.

Somewhat normal cat:

I would not consider H.R. Giger obscure (he's famous for contributing to the design of the xenomorphs in the Ridley Scott Alien movies), but he was definitely creepy and weird. Beautifully executed, though.

Not obscure in his other life, but not well known as a painter.

Richard Dadd. Brilliant English painter who killed his dad.

by Anonymousreply 38August 9, 2017 5:13 AM

R38

[quote]In August of that year, having become convinced that his father was the Devil in disguise, Dadd killed him with a knife and fled to France. En route to Paris, Dadd attempted to kill another tourist with a razor but was overpowered and arrested by police.

Wow, an 18th-century painter more fucked-up than Van Gogh! Neat works too
