Look gays, the first look at "American Crime Story: Versace " is here

[quote]How do you top a phenomenon like last year’s The People v. O.J. Simpson? Opulence, sex and Ricky Martin, naturally. Those are just a few of the elements viewers can expect when The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story premieres in early 2018, focusing on the tragic killing of the fashion titan (Martin plays his long-time love Antonio D’Amico). FX’s follow-up to Simpson, featuring the same team of executive producers including Ryan Murphy, Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson, won’t premiere for months but EW was exclusively on the set in May as the cast shot in Versace’s former home, Casa Casuarina. “It was very moving, sometimes disturbing,” says Penelope Cruz, who plays Gianni’s sister Donatella, of shooting in the house. “We all felt a very powerful energy. It just made me have more passion to tell this story.”

Does this mean a sex scene between Finn and Darren?

Edgar Ramirez is spot on casting.

by Anonymousreply 2June 21, 2017 6:20 PM

A bit odd that the Italians are played by hispanics. Non è vero?

Yeah it works well

[quote]A bit odd that the Italians are played by hispanics. Non è vero?

Italians have played hispanics so many times in Hollywood

Darren Criss as Andrew Cunanan is also good casting, at least looks wise

by Anonymousreply 5June 21, 2017 6:26 PM

Ryan Murphy was very nice to by casting such a pretty actress for Donatella

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 6June 21, 2017 6:26 PM

Total vanity casting for Donatella, indeed.

The only actor of Italian ancestry I can think of as Gianni V.'s doppelganger is Enrico Colantoni. Ramirez is still the better option.

by Anonymousreply 7June 21, 2017 6:32 PM

Don't think so, r1. Jeff Trail and Cunanan were not lovers.

by Anonymousreply 8June 21, 2017 6:33 PM

Ricky looks great.

So, who from Ryan Murphy's stable of actors will play David Madson?

Donatella did not always look like the melted wax figure she looks like now......the result of excessive plastic surgery.

This is how Donatella looked around the time of Gianni's death without the tricks of studio photography.

The actor they get to play Madsen might have a sex scene with Darren as Cunanan. Trail and Cunanan were apparently just friends.

by Anonymousreply 13June 21, 2017 9:19 PM

[quote]Trail and Cunanan were apparently just friends.

Hey, nothing wrong with a little dramatic license, well all know Criss and Wittrock could work magic together.

Hell, AHS has proven to me that Finn is actually better on camera with men than he is women.

by Anonymousreply 14June 21, 2017 9:22 PM

Could the cast get any GAYER? with all the male leads being friends of Dorothy.

by Anonymousreply 15June 21, 2017 9:45 PM

Also wondering they get to play Lee Miglin? Will they portray the rumored sexual relationship he and Cunanan had?

by Anonymousreply 16June 21, 2017 9:52 PM

[quote]Also wondering they get to play Lee Miglin?

More importantly -- who will play MARILYN Miglin?

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2017 9:58 PM

Will there be a porn version?

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2017 9:59 PM

Unbelievable as that may seem to R15, Criss isn't gay in his private life. He's a casting couch opportunist.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2017 10:03 PM

MARY!

by Anonymousreply 23June 21, 2017 10:54 PM

r15, are you complaining the cast is too gay? Can Datalounge get any weirder?

The story is about gay men.

Much better to see gay men cat in a story about gay men than someone like Michael Douglas and Matt Damon being all edgy by playing gay.

by Anonymousreply 24June 21, 2017 11:00 PM

Darren Criss isn't gay? Whatever ... millennials are odd little people.

by Anonymousreply 25June 21, 2017 11:01 PM

The only gay guy in the cast is Ricky Martin right?

I know Ramirez is gay, but not openly so.

And yes, Darren Criss is officially straight, as he repeated over and over while doing "Glee"

by Anonymousreply 26June 21, 2017 11:02 PM

only openly*

by Anonymousreply 27June 21, 2017 11:03 PM

Darren Criss has said a number of cunty things starting with "I came out as straight" to my gays in San Francisco.

It's all just a "clever" word salad for him. He's a private school dude who went to college on his rich family's dime, then got a well-paid TV gig and racked up appearance fees from as many events as he could. This guy told fans at a Glee convention to make sure they buy the song he wrote for Glee because he's "a poor artist" - this after the fans had paid him a pretty dime for the dubious privilege to be in his company and take "cute" pictures with him.

by Anonymousreply 28June 21, 2017 11:21 PM

Donatella looks like the elephant woman with that face of hers. It's like casting Chris Pine to play James Gandolfini.

Go ahead and hate me for it but this story is too gay. It's going to affect the ratings. .

by Anonymousreply 29June 21, 2017 11:32 PM

I never thought Cruz was pretty so I am ok with the casting.

by Anonymousreply 30June 21, 2017 11:36 PM

I will watch every minute of this show but I'm skeptical.

Will the murder happen at the beginning of the series? Middle? End? Is this a story about Versace? Cunanan? Something bigger than either or both of them?

by Anonymousreply 31June 21, 2017 11:42 PM

I am having a hard time with this grim season of American Crime Story so maybe the Versace will be a welcome uplift of trash and glamour and luxury villas and fashion.

[quote] Is this a story about Versace? Cunanan? Something bigger than either or both of them?

So far, EW says, "The series cuts back and forth between the murder in July 1997 and various points in both men’s lives."

by Anonymousreply 34June 21, 2017 11:51 PM

[quote]Go ahead and hate me for it but this story is too gay. It's going to affect the ratings. .

I love that were are getting a high production series that revolves around gay male protagonists, I thank Ryan Murphy for making it happen.

Maybe the ratings won't be great who knows, but I applaud them for making this happen.

by Anonymousreply 35June 21, 2017 11:53 PM

So probably heavy on flashbacks / flashforwards.

by Anonymousreply 36June 21, 2017 11:53 PM

This isn't some run of the mill gay story. It's about one of the biggest fashion names and a serial killer. It will be watched.

by Anonymousreply 37June 21, 2017 11:57 PM

[quote]The color palate is very Versace cum Miami.

Of course. The story of Versace is very much tied to Miami, he really helped that city make a name for itself.

[quote]Is this a story about Versace? Cunanan? Something bigger than either or both of them?

I wonder how this will work also. You have the story of Cunanan, this damaged soul who became a serial killer. And of course you have Versace a famous fashion designer. Two very different stories, that only interweave because of the murder. Given it is called 'American Crime' I presume it must focus more on Cunanan.

by Anonymousreply 38June 22, 2017 12:29 AM

This thread was my first time seeing pics of Ramirez as Versace, and the resemblance is terrific. I agree with others that he – and Criss as Cunanan – were inspired casting. Martin as D’Amico is a miss. However, I wager that of the principle characters, the latter is the least known to the public; thus, his casting is moot. I am rather familiar with Donatella, and Cruz playing her is a huge WTF as their looks are so discordant. If I were to watch this, I wonder if that would take me out of her scenes.

Re Donatella: My impression was that her misshapen nose was due to doing too much coke, as only the most inept of cosmetic surgeons would have given her that thing. If it isn’t too damaged, she certainly has the money to rebuild it.

And Cunanan is referred to as a spree killer rather than as a serial killer.

by Anonymousreply 39June 22, 2017 12:33 AM

Ricky looks very unattractive in that photo.

by Anonymousreply 40June 22, 2017 12:41 AM

I hate PENNE-LOPE-É CRUSSS' accent in anything.

by Anonymousreply 41June 22, 2017 12:42 AM

Gianni had many famous friends so will we see "Cindy" and "Claudia" and "Naomi"? "Elton"? "Madonna"?

Squee!

by Anonymousreply 42June 22, 2017 1:22 AM

I hope it doesn't devolve into a parade of celebrity impersonators, even if he knew a lot of them, R42.

by Anonymousreply 44June 22, 2017 1:42 AM

I'll live for this, but I have to say I'm not pleased about the flashbacks. How we loathe flashbacks.

by Anonymousreply 49June 22, 2017 4:07 AM

A linear story is possible if they intercut scenes of the lives of Cunanan and Versace, until the murder and aftermath. Essentially two-track parallel storytelling. How are your feelings on that account, R49?

by Anonymousreply 50June 22, 2017 5:57 AM

What happened to Ricky Martin??

by Anonymousreply 51June 22, 2017 9:28 AM

Where is the evidence ramirez is gay. Everyone keeps saying it but there is zero proof. His gf is some Cuban actress

by Anonymousreply 52June 22, 2017 10:43 AM

by Anonymousreply 58June 22, 2017 12:46 PM

Ryan Murphy thinks "[Versace killer Andrew Cunanan] really was only allowed to get away with it because of homophobia. There was this great apathy about it and nobody cared and I think part of that was because it seemed like gay people were disposable in our culture.”

Revisionist, sloganist, or nay? What sayeth DL?

Neither. He's not wrong.

by Anonymousreply 60June 22, 2017 5:10 PM

Does that mean nobody cared that Versace was killed because the victim was gay?

by Anonymousreply 61June 22, 2017 5:13 PM

What does he mean get away with it exactly? Cunanan killed himself 9 days after killing Versace.

by Anonymousreply 62June 22, 2017 5:13 PM

[quote]Does that mean nobody cared that Versace was killed because the victim was gay?

No, Versace was famous. That's when it started to matter. Maybe a bit with Lee Miglin, since he was rich.

[quote]What does he mean get away with it exactly?

He committed a cross-country murder spree and no one seemed to look for him all that hard until the Versace murder.

by Anonymousreply 63June 22, 2017 5:17 PM

How can this be too gay? How can the cast be too gay? Gay story. Globally known murder. I'll be watching.

by Anonymousreply 64June 22, 2017 5:22 PM

[quote]He committed a cross-country murder spree and no one seemed to look for him all that hard until the Versace murder.

I see. But to clarify, wasn't only one of his victims before Versace actually gay, at least confirmed? David Madson. Though I believe they were all single men right? So maybe possibly gay to the cops.

I guess I can get Ryan Murphy's Argument that it seemed like "gay drama", and 90s era cops just didn't care that much.

by Anonymousreply 65June 22, 2017 5:23 PM

Does Ryan know something that we don't about the cops' pursuit of Cunanan?

Can Ricky Martin act? I know that he has experience but is he good? Maybe his part will be small.

by Anonymousreply 66June 22, 2017 5:25 PM

I vividly recall news about the hunt for Cunanan once it was clear to police that he was traveling east. I live in NYC and remember that gays were asked to look out/beware. This was well before the Versace murder.

by Anonymousreply 67June 22, 2017 5:28 PM

[quote]For ACS‘s second installment, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, the TV producer hopes to once again use a crime as a way to explore social issues. In particular, Murphy sees the 1997 murder of the fashion designer as a chance to discuss sexuality and homophobia in the 1990s

Ryan Murphy often has the subtlety of a sledge hammer when discussing social issues...

by Anonymousreply 68June 22, 2017 5:28 PM

Absolutely r67.

by Anonymousreply 69June 22, 2017 5:30 PM

[quote]I see. But to clarify, wasn't only one of his victims before Versace actually gay, at least confirmed? David Madson

I thought Jeff Trail was openly gay too.

by Anonymousreply 70June 22, 2017 5:30 PM

to be fair r68, sometimes you need a sledgehammer when dealing with some of the hard headed idiots who inhabit this planet.

by Anonymousreply 71June 22, 2017 5:31 PM

A bronze age here. Cunanan's wanted poster/alert was in the gay bars here in Minneapolis well before Versace was killed. What caught my attention was his first victim lived 3-4 blocks from from that bar. There had been a series of gay bashings/ murders around that time and many were freaked-- not knowing who was doing the killings- then finding out it was another gay man doing the killings rather than being a hate (anti-gay) crime.

by Anonymousreply 72June 22, 2017 5:32 PM

[quote]How can this be too gay? I'll be watching.

I think people are worried whether the show will have a broad appeal. Obviously the DL will be watching, but we need more than that demographic for the show to be a success.

[quote]Can Ricky Martin act? I know that he has experience but is he good? Maybe his part will be small.

I've never seen Ricky act, but weight of the show isn't on his shoulders as it is a supporting role as Versace's boyfriend.

Since he is playing Cunanan, Darren Criss is carrying so much of the show on his shoulders. So it is really his performance I am most nervous about.

by Anonymousreply 73June 22, 2017 5:40 PM

I think it's a good choice for a second installment. I'll give it a chance; could be fun.

by Anonymousreply 74June 22, 2017 5:42 PM

The Katrina story was obviously a red herring.....RM does that a lot.....clues he drops for his shows are usually a smokescreen.

by Anonymousreply 75June 22, 2017 5:45 PM

Looks awesome; I can't wait.

by Anonymousreply 76June 22, 2017 5:54 PM

R50 Thank you, yes, I'm feeling much better now. Please tell my you're Ryan M.

by Anonymousreply 77June 22, 2017 5:56 PM

[quote]Since he is playing Cunanan, Darren Criss is carrying so much of the show on his shoulders. So it is really his performance I am most nervous about.

Depends how his scenes are edited. He can do the charm. He's lousy in heavy or dramatic scenes. His line readings are mannered and sometimes take you out of a scene.

by Anonymousreply 78June 22, 2017 5:56 PM

When will the show premier?

by Anonymousreply 79June 22, 2017 5:59 PM

"Early 2018"

by Anonymousreply 80June 22, 2017 6:00 PM

[quote]I thought Jeff Trail was openly gay too.

Right you are.

Also Jeff's sister Candance disagrees with Murphy at least, she personally felt the cops did everything they could for him

The whole article is worth reading if you are interested in this story

[quote]That evening I got two calls from the Minneapolis police asking about my conversations with Jeff about Andrew. Police had already staked out the San Diego airport. I take issue with people who say they weren’t on top of their job. I cannot say enough about the Minneapolis police and the FBI. Our whole family feels very strongly that law enforcement went above and beyond the call of duty. Andrew was put on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list on June 12. So they were doing their job long before Versace’s death.

by Anonymousreply 81June 22, 2017 6:11 PM

You know, there was still a lot of homophobia 20 years ago. I remember Tom Brokaw referring to Cunanan as a "homicidal homosexual" on NBC News.

by Anonymousreply 82June 22, 2017 6:44 PM

good move to switch seasons: Versace was supposed to be the third and Katrina the second one. Of course people are more inclined to watch a sexy thriller set in the fashion world than the story of a natural disaster, so Murphy started the production of Versace first. Katrina will be shot next year. I love Penelope Cruz, but it's mindblowing that her american accent is still so awful after more than 10 years playing american movies.

by Anonymousreply 83June 22, 2017 7:33 PM

People's inclinations have nothing to do with the switch.

They always planned to shoot both almost simultaneously, separate production teams and all. But Katrina is more expensive and logistically complicated, as well as some actors were unavailable.

by Anonymousreply 84June 22, 2017 7:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 86June 22, 2017 7:46 PM

r31, knowing Ryan Murphy, he hasn't decided yet - even if it's done filming, he may change his mind.

by Anonymousreply 87June 23, 2017 12:36 AM

r78, it's actually quite easy to play psychopath/sociopath ... despite mainstream opinion, it isn't that hard at all and does not take acting chops.

by Anonymousreply 88June 23, 2017 12:39 AM

I disagree R88. R78, was stating that if Criss has to have any subtle but layered dramatic or compelling scenes, will he be able to sell it? I get that often psychopaths and such are often depicted as being silent with stony looks when many of them actually have Jeykell and Hyde abilities. Can he convincingly do menace or dangerous at all? Then flip to sweetie pie the next?

by Anonymousreply 89June 24, 2017 7:46 AM

Wow! Edgar Ramirez is a dead ringer for Versace and Gaga should've played Donatella

by Anonymousreply 90June 24, 2017 7:55 AM

The producers must have spent quite a bit of money on makeup to cover up Ricky Martin's many tattoos and also darken Darren Criss' Irish pale skin to make him appear half-Filipino (Cunanan is Filipino-American).

by Anonymousreply 91June 24, 2017 8:12 AM

Also latinos are a big group of individuals that would be good for an audience compared to Italians. It's probably like 95% of the reason why Ricky is even here since he can't act worth shit.

by Anonymousreply 96June 24, 2017 3:32 PM

r95, yes.

[quote]It’s also a role that requires Martin’s first on-screen sex scene which came rather naturally to the star. “I thought I was going to be more uncomfortable,” admits the singer. “The exhibitionism kicked in for a moment and all of a sudden I was naked in bed in front of 20 people from the crew and another actor I met that same day. Nice ding at "Glee" at there Darren, don't judge me for that, it was a shitty part!

Everyone dealt with the same shitty writing but certain players (Lea, Chris, Naya) were clearly more skilled than the rest of the kids in that choir room.

I want this to be good, I want Darren to succeed, but I am skeptical he really has it him.

That said, I think he will be perfectly adequate, especially with right editing. But this is easily could be an emmy winning role in the hands of the right actor.

by Anonymousreply 115June 29, 2017 2:37 AM

I think Criss could be fine if he manages to reign the stage acting / overacting and do better with the line readings. One thing he may be right to hope for, that this role will be better written because 1) it's based on an existing literary source and 2) won't be Murphy writing the scripts. At least I'm assuming he's only producing and directing, as on O.J.

So EW says Max Greenfield plays Versace's older brother? He looks much younger than Edgar in this location photo.

[quote]The New Girl star, who also appeared in American Horror Story: Hotel, is playing Santo, Versace's older brother, who became the president and co-chief executive officer of Gianni Versace SpA after his death.

For this story, the first 15 minutes involve music—opera, no dialogue, and it’s Versace restored to health, and starting his day with his staff, then walking to the News Café, intercut with Cunanan stalking him. So it starts with Versace’s murder. What we wanted to do was tell the story backwards. So, we end with the Cunanan figure as a young man, and Versace as a young man trying to make a stab of it as a designer. The interesting thing about this show is that there’s only violence and murder in the first four or five episodes. The last episode, of course, is of Cunanan on the houseboat and making a decision to kill himself before they can arrest him.

As long as hot ass Ricky shows his ass/dick, I'll be watching. I wonder if they will have Lee and Marilyn as characters? Maybe they could get a RuPaul alum to play Mailyn? I could totally see Pandora or Jinxx convincingly doing this.

by Anonymousreply 118July 2, 2017 3:18 AM

They don't show dick on FX but he will definitely show his ass. Apparently he's already shot a sex scene.

by Anonymousreply 119July 2, 2017 11:46 AM

That's unfortunate, because Ricky doesn't have an ass but has a nice dick if some of his bulges mean anything

by Anonymousreply 120July 2, 2017 1:20 PM

From r117's link:

"Miglin was a closeted gay man."

I think the same thing as well. However, Murphy might want to run it by FX's legal department, or he could be embroiled in another lawsuit.

by Anonymousreply 121July 2, 2017 9:23 PM

Lol, who is the darren is straight troll? Honey there's nothing straight about her.

by Anonymousreply 122July 2, 2017 9:38 PM

I live about 45 minutes from the Miglin house. I can tell you, this was HUGE news when it happened, and Marilyn Miglin shut it down so tight and fast it was truly unbelievable. I have never seen such power and money used to change a news event in my life. The family stated immediately it was a horrific stranger killing, Lee was tragically and randomly killed in a nightmare scenario and no further stories need be written. No details were to be released about how Lee was found. He was a happily married man and father who suffered tragically in a home invasion. End of story. It took a very long time for details to trickle out. Twenty years before one of his kids talked about it. (Hey! Like Harry and William!).

by Anonymousreply 123July 2, 2017 10:05 PM

I bet Miglin and Cunanan fucked around. The 4th victim was random but that one seemed too specific and odd to be random. Though I agree with an earlier post. I doubt they'll portray any affair between Miglin and Cunanan. Miglin's family would be on the attack. That murder is definitely the one I'm lost interested in seeing how they portray it.

by Anonymousreply 124July 2, 2017 11:13 PM

In 2014, the Chicago reporter Chuck Goudie used the FOIA to get 100's of pages of info on the case released. The FBI definitely believed Miglin knew him and that Miglin was closeted. They found and interviewed a local rent boy who had a number of encounters with Miglin and Cunanan. He stated they would pick him up together and all have sex. The FBI believed him after extensive fact-checking. It gave credence to how Cunanan knew the house, felt comfortable in it (ham sandwich, shaving), and the severity of the torture death, something reserved for Miglin. Many details are still not released, but he punished him horribly. The FBI had specific info stating Cunanan thought he had AIDS (he did not) and was going to punish those he thought gave it to him. Can't wait to see if the Miglin power is still strong enough to keep it all quiet, especially with the FBI report available.

Darren Criss must be the most committed bearder of recent time while making a career out of playing gay men. So committed that he bearded when he was a nobody in some college theater group?

This is from before Glee.

Some people are gay. And some are just raised in San Francisco, and are ambitious and pretentious millennial half-Asian hipsters.

I checked out instagram under the hashtag americancrimestory and found out that the first name of the actor playing David Madson is Cody. Any guesses who it could be?

by Anonymousreply 127July 8, 2017 6:33 PM

Why are they promoting a show that doesn't come out for a year? I'm looking forward to this but I'll probably forget all about it by then.

Also, this upcoming season of AHS sounds like shit and with no interesting cast members. Not even a wasted-as-usual Angela Bassett or Kathy Bates to be found.

[quote]Also, this upcoming season of AHS sounds like shit and with no interesting cast members. Not even a wasted-as-usual Angela Bassett or Kathy Bates to be found.

I thought Vera Farmiga was supposed to be in this season, but Entertainment Weekly reported yesterday that she is not.

by Anonymousreply 129July 8, 2017 7:32 PM

I wonder if the show will portray when Cunanan was in a relationship with that Madson guy. I have no clue of any famous Codys bit it might be a nobody that was cast.

by Anonymousreply 130July 8, 2017 7:37 PM

Vera Farmiga was wishful thinking.

First they got rid of Jessica Lange and now they've gotten rid of Lady Gaga and Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates. Now it's just the Colton Haynes and dish rag Sarah "did I mention I'm a lesbian?" Paulson.

by Anonymousreply 131July 8, 2017 7:37 PM

[quote]I have no clue of any famous Codys bit it might be a nobody that was cast.

Well, then, it's probably someone who won the role on Ryan Murphy's casting couch.

by Anonymousreply 132July 8, 2017 7:45 PM

r131, you know you've gone wrong when Mary Cherry from Popular is the most exciting person in your cast.

by Anonymousreply 133July 8, 2017 7:47 PM

Maybe it's Paul Walker's brother, Cody?

I wish Murphy would do a series about the Patty Hearst kidnapping and the media frenzy that followed.

Ryan Murphy kills Bille August's movie even though the movie was announced first.

R137 Thanks for that. I was wondering what point the Banderas movie would be with the Ryan Murphy series coming out first. Interesting that neither cast an Italian to play an Italian icon. The Banderas movie had a Spaniard and the Ryan Murphy one has a Venezuelan (with a Spaniard as the sister).

The title of the season has been changed to "American Crime Story: Versace/Cunanan" per Finn Witrock's Instagram.

by Anonymousreply 141August 9, 2017 5:28 PM

Makese sense I suppose. Not as catchy, but a more honest title for what the show actually is r141.

by Anonymousreply 142August 9, 2017 7:37 PM

Nah, Versace/Cunanan was a working title. The official title is "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story".

by Anonymousreply 143August 9, 2017 7:50 PM

Did they ever cast Lee Miglin and David Madson?

by Anonymousreply 144August 10, 2017 2:46 AM

They haven't announced those yet, but through some instagram snooping I've discovered Madson is being played by an actor with the first name Cody.

Think Darren Criss will have a sex scene in this? Or at least show his ass?

by Anonymousreply 148August 12, 2017 12:22 AM

Ricky certainly will, otherwise why bother to cover that butt tattoo.

by Anonymousreply 149August 12, 2017 8:34 AM

Ricky barely even has an ass though. I'd rather see his dick, provided some of those bulges were the real deal.

by Anonymousreply 150August 13, 2017 6:15 AM

Andrew was a gigolo. He absolutely will have sex scenes.

by Anonymousreply 151August 15, 2017 1:34 AM

Ricky should stick to his singing career cuz he is a horrible actor

by Anonymousreply 152August 15, 2017 2:01 AM

"Since Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace was shot dead outside his Miami Beach home in 1997, his murder has been pored over in countless articles, books and films. Now the shooting will be examined on television next year in the award-winning American Crime Story.

Amid the speculation, Antonio D’Amico, Versace’s boyfriend of 15 years and the person who found him sprawled on the steps of the mansion, has remained remarkably taciturn. But the forthcoming series, in which he will be played by singer and actor Ricky Martin, has spurred D’Amico to speak his mind.

“There has been so much written and said about the murder, and thousands of suppositions, but not a trace of reality,” D’Amico told the Observer. The 58-year-old has not been consulted for the series, which will be entitled American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, and said the images he has seen online of how he reacted are incorrect.

“The picture of Ricky Martin holding the body in his arms is ridiculous,” he said, adding that it was like looking at a mimic of Michelangelo’s Pietà, which depicts the body of Jesus in the arms of his mother after the crucifixion. “Maybe it’s the director’s poetic licence, but that is not how I reacted.” .....

In an interview last June, Martin, who came out as gay in 2010, spoke about a scene in the television show in which Gianni, played by Edgar Ramirez, is walking along the beach with Antonio when he suddenly becomes weak. His boyfriend touches him and Gianni responds: “Don’t touch me! The paparazzi!”

But Versace never tried to hide his sexuality, D’Amico said, and was one of the first people in the public eye to declare being gay in the late 1980s.

“We lived like a natural couple, there was never a problem,” he said. “It was the right moment for him to come out in public, but everyone involved in our world knew. He never tried to hide who he was.”

D’Amico doesn’t plan to watch American Crime Story but said he’d be happy if Martin got in contact to get some insight into his relationship with Versace. “It’s getting to know the small things about a relationship … for example, Gianni was so ordered and focused at work but in his private life everything was disorganised. He’d leave the bathroom in a mess. At a certain point I said ‘enough’! And when it came to cooking, he didn’t even know how to [boil] an egg.”

Apparently an actor named Cody Fern is playing David Madson. According to Wikipedia anyway which obviously could be bullshit. He kind of looks like the real guy.

When will this show up on Netflix?

by Anonymousreply 155August 26, 2017 6:12 PM

R154, his credits are only a few short films. It's kind of odd for RM to cast a considerable role with a no-name. So, did RM spend all his budget, or is he fucking this Aussie?

I am watching it sort of.... but the actor portraying Cunanan is making the character so awful in every way (which is probably an accurate portrayal) its hard to watch. You have to wonder why both Madsen and Trail, good looking, smart, outgoing, and successful men would have spent one second with this guy Cunanan. It just reinforces the fact you have to filter who you let into your life very very carefully, something I see everybody. but particularly gay men. drop the ball time and time again . Whether it s self esteem issues or what, I dont know. 5 seconds with Cunanan and I guarantee I would have diagnosed sociopath and run the other way.

by Anonymousreply 158January 29, 2018 6:59 PM

Ricky Martin was awesome. The scene where he holds the dead Versace in his arms--you have to have a heart of stone not to laugh. Give Ricky "Streep" a comedy Emmy.

(That's what Oscar Wilde might have said.)

by Anonymousreply 159January 29, 2018 7:23 PM

[quote] You have to wonder why both Madsen and Trail, good looking, smart, outgoing, and successful men would have spent one second with this guy Cunanan.

Andrew paid for everything, he knew everybody, he knew every social event that was going on. He was a great person to be friends with, and both Jeff and David benefited a lot from knowing him.

After a while you get over his superficial charm and you see the troubled pathological liar underneath but at that point they felt like they owed him their friendship, just that loyalty that comes.

Jeff described Andrew like a member of the family. Sometimes he hated him, but he felt he had to be there for him. Pity, their kindness end up getting them killed.

And join us over here
