Has John Malkovich commented?

Shit, I almost started a thread about her after watching Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She was so likeable and incandescent.

I remember her as Dr Abby Keaton -- the Dr who wasn't a doctor on ER, and Dr Mary Guinan -- the doctor who was a doctor -- in And The Band Played On.

Why wasn't she more famous? Love her.

Damn, I've liked her in everything I've seen her in. Very talented and charismatic.

She was terrific in MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS. She has a really nice moment when she's at the school's Gershwin revue, reading the program, and suddenly realizes exactly who "Rowena" is.
Very much a "less is more" actress, the kind I really like. RIP.

Every article says something about cause of death not known, not disclosed, etc. Was she sick? This reminds me of Elizabeth Peña, who I also really liked. When she died, they said nothing, then later referred to an "illness."
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 9, 2017 5:03 PM

Also, re Peña, the cause was revealed later on the death certificate, and by then the news cycle was long past her. Only a few outlets returned to it (like TMZ). I wonder if we'll have to wait for the death certificate here, too.

Truly a great one of a kind actress like Geraldine Page, Ruth Gordon , Madelyn Kahn ,Judy Holiday and Joan Hacket that was gone too soon.

Her er character is memorable for telling Dr Benton that he should basically rethink becoming a pediatrician.

I doubt she was sick since she was currently filming Future Man. It's never good when the family don't mention cause of death.

TMZ did an update.
"9:10 AM PT -- Sources connected to Glenne tell us she had checked in to a hospital last week to get treatment for blood clots. We're told she seemed to be getting better, but things took a turn Thursday."

R4, I think you're confusing her with Mare Winningham's character. Headly's Keaton was head of pediatrics, and had an affair with Carter. Winningham's character was an impostor obsessed with Mark Green.

Dammit. One of my good female friends has Factor V and blood clots, and I worry about her constantly — it can just take you out without warning.

She spoke so meticulously on ER "John Carter.....John Carter..."
Just call him " John!"
It drove me nuts
I'm already going to hell for laughing at R19
RIP, Glenne Headly

She looks like a less good version of Teri Garr.
Her demise is making NPR headlines. Why? Slow news day?
I am an elder gay and a "culture vulture" and never heard of this bimbo. Her claim to fame is two Emmy nominations in a career of 40 years. WTF!

Making Mr. Right got terrible reviews when it came out., but I have always thought it was funny and a non-condemnational look at differences between men and women.
Everyone in it is good, including Susan Anton!, but I came away perhaps most impressed by Glenne Headly as a slightly dingy soap star. She is instantly likeable on the screen and can pull off dippiness without being ingratiating. Sort of like what Victoria Jackson would be like if she were funny.
I am sad she has died. She was never a big star, but always a welcome presence.

R36 the fact that you have never heard of her or ever watched dirty rotten scoundrels is a sad reflection on you. Clearly you can scrub the idiotic title of "culture vulture" from your resume.

Her telling off Peter Benton after the botched surgery on the baby was one of the top moments for me on ER. Pretty much loved her in everything she did. And yes, she was the awesome as that hellish defense counsel on The Night Of. She was really a versatile actress.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 9, 2017 11:37 PM

No, r56, I meant ingratiating.
She was not. She didn't come off as actively seeking approval or likeability. She was a natural.

Exactly, r59. She could play "dingbat" or "ditzy" with almost elegance, but she never let you think her character was an idiot.
This worked to perfect effect in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, where we learn in the end that she was playing us all along.

r58 - You're right. I didn't think to ingratiate was necessarily a deliberate effort.

After Malkovich left her, she was caught having sex with Polish hussy, Joanna Pacula, in a hotel room. Sounds like some great revenge sex.

A long time ago Glenn made a movie called "Mortal Thoughts" with Demi Moore, Bruce Willis, and Harvey Keitel. It was very good. An indie you would have never expected out of Demi or Bruce. If you can get a hold of it it's worth watching.

r68 totally agree! Mortal Thoughts is an excellent film; very underrated. Bruce, Demi and of course, Glenne, are terrific in it. I really thought Glenne would go onto a huge career because in the late '80s/early '90s she was giving exceptional performances.
She didn't become a huge star, but as this thread demonstrates, she was highly respected as an actress.

I live out in LA. Glenne lived with her husband and son in a house just a few blocks up the street from me. One of my best friends was friends with Glenne. He went to acting school with her and occasionally worked for her as an assistant before moving out of LA a few years ago. They stayed in touch. He called me yesterday morning to tell me he had just turned on his computer and the first thing he saw was her obituary. He was devastated!
I would occasionally run into her at Gelson's and we'd chat a little. She was very sweet, earthy, and a little kooky. A very, very nice woman.
I also believe she was practically best friends with Laurie Metcalfe, who is expected to win the Tony on Sunday. I wonder if she'll mention Glenne in her speech if she wins.
