A New Colorized "I Love Lucy" 1 Hour Special Is On CBS Tonight

Will you be tuning in or pooping out?

by Anonymousreply 97December 18, 2018 2:00 PM

I found it rather unpoopular the last time.

The colorized version of Lucy's hair looked like a carrot.

by Anonymousreply 1May 19, 2017 5:31 PM

Spoiler Alert.

She dances with Van Johnson!!!

by Anonymousreply 2May 19, 2017 6:35 PM

Harpo Marx bit was priceless

by Anonymousreply 3May 19, 2017 7:23 PM

Lucy was the epitome of grace, class and sophistication in that Van Johnson number. If only she had done Mame at this point in her life, we'd be talking about multiple Emmy and Academy Award winner Lucille Ball. And yes I realize the musical had not been written yet, but you get my point,

by Anonymousreply 4May 19, 2017 7:40 PM

Is it one episode or two?

by Anonymousreply 5May 19, 2017 11:02 PM

Two new colored eps.

by Anonymousreply 6May 19, 2017 11:07 PM

I can't wait!

by Anonymousreply 7May 19, 2017 11:54 PM

Isn't it interesting that nobody can come up with anything new? So they have to re-run colorized versions of a 65 year old sitcom (albeit a good one).

by Anonymousreply 8May 20, 2017 12:01 AM

I want them to colorize the fashion show episode.

by Anonymousreply 9May 20, 2017 12:05 AM

There is nothing wrong with treated great old series like classics. I question the need to colorise it, but OK, whatever entertains people. I think people will be entertained by this. Lord knows there aren't many people alive today who saw it when it originally aired.

by Anonymousreply 10May 20, 2017 12:05 AM

r9

I would also. I would love to see what they looked like in color

by Anonymousreply 11May 20, 2017 12:09 AM

[quote] Will you be tuning in or pooping out?

I've had sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 12May 20, 2017 12:10 AM

[quote] She dances with Van Johnson!!!

That's Golden Age Hollywood Queen Van Johnson to you, missy!

by Anonymousreply 13May 20, 2017 12:11 AM

I always liked this number. But Desi's club looked like the most uncomfortable place to be. Those chairs look cheap.

by Anonymousreply 14May 20, 2017 12:18 AM

Carolyn is such a funny doofus in this one.

by Anonymousreply 15May 20, 2017 12:30 AM

[quote]I want them to colorize the fashion show episode.

Imagine The Lovely Mrs. Richard Carlson in full bloom.

by Anonymousreply 16May 20, 2017 12:32 AM

R12 The correct quote is I HAVE sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 17May 20, 2017 12:33 AM

R1, Rex Reed was on "Today" decades back and Gene Shalit quoted him as saying "Lucy has Popsicle Orange hair" to which Shalit said admiringly, "that's completely right." It is an amazingly descriptive sentence and the color photos of her in that era prove his point.

by Anonymousreply 18May 20, 2017 12:36 AM

They edited Harpo's solo.

by Anonymousreply 19May 20, 2017 5:37 AM

[quote] They edited Harpo's solo.

Thanks for answering my question, which was about whether they cut them for time. Turns out they do.

by Anonymousreply 20May 20, 2017 8:15 AM

[quote] They edited Harpo's solo.

by Anonymousreply 21May 20, 2017 8:15 AM

Harpo said Lucy forced him to rehearse so much, he had a heart attack right after the episode.

by Anonymousreply 22May 20, 2017 9:53 AM

[quote]Two new colored eps.

Racist negro.

by Anonymousreply 23May 20, 2017 1:14 PM

R14 That is a great clip. Desi is soooo suave.

It's funny, by today's standards, I guess Lucy and Desi would be considered an interracial couple.

by Anonymousreply 24May 20, 2017 1:43 PM

r24

They were back then also... It scared CBS

by Anonymousreply 25May 20, 2017 1:49 PM

Van Johnson didn't get any funny lines.

by Anonymousreply 26May 20, 2017 4:53 PM

I wish they wouldn't have colorized Van Johnson's hair. Now he smells funny "down there".

by Anonymousreply 27May 20, 2017 4:56 PM

[quote] I guess Lucy and Desi would be considered an interracial couple.

They had to finance the I Love Lucy pilot themselves because nobody would take a chance on a sitcom about an interracial couple. Because they financed it themselves, they were able to exert more control over the process and that is why the show is so well preserved today.

by Anonymousreply 28May 20, 2017 4:58 PM

Van was supposed to play the part of the guy in the restaurant which went to Bill Holden. The writers said, "The audience would cheer thinking Van deserved it."

by Anonymousreply 29May 20, 2017 5:20 PM

Lucille looked lovely in pink.

by Anonymousreply 30May 20, 2017 5:24 PM

It's interesting to watch something in both black and white & color.

It really highlights how much detail is muddied in black and white.

Does anyone know if they stay original to the original color of everything when they do this?

by Anonymousreply 31May 20, 2017 5:27 PM

What's up with those earrings?

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2017 5:32 PM

Freddie looked cute as Zeppo or was it Chico?

by Anonymousreply 33May 20, 2017 5:37 PM

[quote]Does anyone know if they stay original to the original color of everything when they do this?

On one of the dvd extras, they have a short clip that was filmed in color by an audience member. For some reason, the sets used a lot of drab brown. I always thought the Tropicana would have a lot of bright, splashy colors.

by Anonymousreply 34May 20, 2017 5:37 PM

The Van Johnson number showed how sophisticated and charming Lucy could be. Her two different readings of "Greta Garbo! Did you see Camille" were great examples of how she crafted her lines to the situation. As Johnson sings to her, she is indeed lovable.

by Anonymousreply 35May 20, 2017 5:38 PM

She could sing in tune in this episode.

by Anonymousreply 36May 20, 2017 5:43 PM

[quote]That is a great clip. Desi is soooo suave.

I really don't think Desi was given his proper credit for his onscreen work. To the 1950s housewife, he was sex on a stick. Everybody always talks about that it was a popular show because Lucy was so funny. But how many were tuning in to see the hot Latin lover?

by Anonymousreply 37May 20, 2017 5:46 PM

I'd love to see the color of Aunt Martha's Salad Dressing.

by Anonymousreply 38May 20, 2017 5:57 PM

I was surprised by those jewel-like accents on Ethel's dress in the nightclub scene.

by Anonymousreply 39May 20, 2017 7:27 PM

I wanna see the hostess pants in color and of course Ethel in her blue jeans

[quote]She could sing in tune in this episode.

Like Ethel's piano playing her ability to play came and went depending on the jokes needed.

by Anonymousreply 40May 20, 2017 8:07 PM

The sets were actually muted because they look better in black and white that way.

by Anonymousreply 41May 20, 2017 8:08 PM

I was wondering about that, R41

by Anonymousreply 42May 20, 2017 8:14 PM

R40, but she DIDN'T sing in the episode. She has some patter with Johnson but no singing. I don't believe there was ever an episode where she sang decently because it would ruin the gag. Also, she was terrible in real life.

by Anonymousreply 43May 20, 2017 8:29 PM

She was decent as Sally Sweet, the queen of Delancey Street

by Anonymousreply 44May 20, 2017 8:32 PM

[quote]She was decent as Sally Sweet, the queen of Delancey Street

Not totally. In one of the hip pops in the dance, she's about 2 seconds ahead of the drum.

by Anonymousreply 45May 20, 2017 8:44 PM

She held her own in "Friendship"

by Anonymousreply 46May 20, 2017 10:04 PM

These were the dullest Lucy episodes. Hiss CBS. Hissssssss.

by Anonymousreply 47May 21, 2017 3:37 AM

I want to see them do some of the Connecticut episodes

by Anonymousreply 48May 21, 2017 3:42 AM

I always pictured the dress she danced in as white. I didn't like it in pink. These are very much edited but when they release them on DVD like the other color episodes I think they are uncut.

by Anonymousreply 49May 21, 2017 4:05 AM

[quote]She held her own in "Friendship"

Speaking of which, Fred held his own because Ethel would often withhold her wifely duties.

by Anonymousreply 50May 21, 2017 4:20 AM

Sometimes black and white is sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 51May 21, 2017 4:29 AM

Let me know when they colorize the grape-stomping episode.

by Anonymousreply 52May 21, 2017 4:33 AM

I think that already happened, R52

by Anonymousreply 53May 21, 2017 4:39 AM

R52 DEFINITELY already happened.

by Anonymousreply 54May 21, 2017 5:23 AM

R51 only in the good ol days could the help smoke up a storm in the laundry room and nobody notice a thing amiss when the "fresh linens" were delivered.

by Anonymousreply 55May 21, 2017 6:50 AM

She was discreet as Sally Sweet, the queen of Delancey Street

by Anonymousreply 56May 21, 2017 11:35 AM

[quote] don't believe there was ever an episode where she sang decently because it would ruin the gag. Also, she was terrible in real life.

Lucille Ball could sing very simple songs with limited range. Some people like me, can't sing a note.

See below link to Lucy on her own singing...re: Mame

Lucy és la puta estúpida, i espero que ella recorda com a tal.

by Anonymousreply 58May 21, 2017 1:17 PM

I think in her heart Lucille Ball always wanted to be a musical comedy star. When she finally did Wildcat and Mame, they were disasters.

by Anonymousreply 59May 21, 2017 3:24 PM

Dahling, will they colorize me?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 60May 21, 2017 3:42 PM

R60, that was one of the best episodes in the entire run. I'd love to see "Charm School" colorized just to see Ethel's leopard get up in color.

Here's a clip of the grape-stomping scene. Unfortunately, it's taped off of showing on someone's TV, so the quality sucks.

From 1933. Lillian Roth singing Eadie Was a Lady. At about the 5:40 mark Vivian gets the best line in the song.

[quote]The sets were actually muted because they look better in black and white that way.

So CBS made up some of the colors to make everything look better in the colorized episodes? That would be disappointing. I'd like to think I was watching them as close to how they looked in real life.

Lucy couldn't really sing but she was a good dancer.

I've watched clips of Lucy's post-I Love Lucy shows with Vivian Vance. I thought Vivian became a better actress after ILL. she seemed more comfortable in the other shows.

by Anonymousreply 64May 21, 2017 6:53 PM

r64 - Did you watch my link at r51 ?

by Anonymousreply 65May 21, 2017 7:01 PM

I think Vivian was brilliant on I Love Lucy. She was able to work with Lucy and be just as funny.

Look how brilliant the acting, writing and production of the show was. The candy wrapping scene is only 3 minutes long, but it is hilarious and has become iconic in the sitcom cannon.

I want to see sidesplittingly funny "Lucy and the Loving Cup" in Color!

by Anonymousreply 67May 21, 2017 7:19 PM

[quote] the sitcom cannon.

Like the one they had on "F Troop?"

by Anonymousreply 68May 21, 2017 7:31 PM

r68 - I think they meant the kind that goes off in Pachelbel's Cannon to make the audience wake up.

by Anonymousreply 69May 21, 2017 7:41 PM

I assumed they meant Dyan Cannon but I don't remember her starring in any sitcoms.

by Anonymousreply 70May 21, 2017 7:53 PM

I don't think she did r70 - I believe Julia was more a dramedy.

by Anonymousreply 71May 21, 2017 8:04 PM

Wasn't Diane Carroll (sp?) Julia?

by Anonymousreply 72May 21, 2017 8:06 PM

How did we go from talking about Lucille Ball to Tilda Swinton?

by Anonymousreply 73May 21, 2017 8:22 PM

They should colorize the Tallulah Bankhead episode of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour series.

by Anonymousreply 74May 21, 2017 8:29 PM

r74 - Brilliant idea. Wish I'd thought of that.

by Anonymousreply 75May 22, 2017 6:09 PM

I recently got a Roku and found a channel that runs I Love Lucy episodes 24/7 without commercials. These are full eps with none of the cuts that were done so more commercials could be crow-barred into the reruns, so I'm seeing a lot of little scenes that were missing. For instance, the ep where Lucy gets thinks Ricky had a fling with Cuban entertainer Carlotta Romero just ran and it ended with something I'd never seen before: the cast dressed up in Santa outfits and singing Jingle Bells to the camera. These unedited clips also have sponsors like "Lilt Home Permanent" advertising between scenes. I like seeing these hidden treasures.

by Anonymousreply 76May 26, 2017 6:33 PM

Is there a corresponding One Day at a Time channel that shows barb's bulimia and Schneider's speed ball addiction?

by Anonymousreply 77May 26, 2017 6:39 PM

[quote]and it ended with something I'd never seen before: the cast dressed up in Santa outfits and singing Jingle Bells to the camera.

That's from the Christmas episode, which was never shown in syndication, but was colorized and shown on CBS a few years back.

by Anonymousreply 78May 26, 2017 7:03 PM

Interesting. I never even heard of that so I checked it out on YT. As it turns out, the "Jingle Bells" number was a tag on "Drafted" and would serve as inspiration for the Xmas episode. I'm an ILL fanatic but this is completely new to me. The entrance and exit of Santa remain the same as the Xmas episode.

I loved how Lucy flubbed her "danced with Vance" line and Ricky was having none of it. Classic!

by Anonymousreply 80May 26, 2017 8:34 PM

R75, I don't scroll beyond 25 posts. Life's too short.

by Anonymousreply 81May 26, 2017 8:34 PM

R80, check out Lucy. She's definitely laughing. You can see her abdomen moving in silhouette and since she's wearing black, it's a fun moment to catch.

by Anonymousreply 82May 26, 2017 8:40 PM

[quote]and Ricky was having none of it.

Desi's ad-lib is so smooth.

by Anonymousreply 83May 27, 2017 6:50 AM

Did the show never do retakes? It seems like the show was filmed as if it were a play. If there were any flubs they were kept as part of the episode.

by Anonymousreply 84May 27, 2017 7:07 AM

[quote]Lucille Ball always wanted to be a musical comedy star. When she finally did Wildcat and Mame, they were disasters.

That's because she insisted on using cue cards and putting her untalented children in the cast.

by Anonymousreply 85May 27, 2017 7:42 AM

There's a weird blooper when Ricky and Fred come in as Caroline is leaving. Vivian is with her back to the arm of a chair. She then sits down, except she sort of misses the arm of the chair and falls into the seat. We see her struggle to bring her legs over the arm of the chair and correct herself so she's in a sitting position.

by Anonymousreply 86May 27, 2017 4:29 PM

[quote]Did the show never do retakes?

Look kid, do you know how much retakes cost? I married a loser man who was spending all my money on cheap floozies. I had to hire my children and Gale Gordon because they worked cheap. Once I wanted to do a retake, but Gary Morton talked me out of it. Retakes are for unprofessionals.

by Anonymousreply 87May 27, 2017 4:40 PM

What has Desi Jr done all these decades, besides live off the merchandising money from I Love Lucy?

by Anonymousreply 88May 27, 2017 5:43 PM

He fucked Liza with his huge Cuban cock when she was most fuckable.

by Anonymousreply 89May 27, 2017 6:00 PM

[quote]What has Desi Jr done all these decades, besides live off the merchandising money from I Love Lucy?

He did me!

by Anonymousreply 90May 27, 2017 6:09 PM

I bet Desi Jr. banged Flo Henderson when he appeared on The Brady Bunch as well. I'm sure Bob Reed chatted him up, but Bob was no Caesar Romero.

by Anonymousreply 91May 27, 2017 9:46 PM

The shows last night were well done, once again: Pioneer Women on ILL and two good ones on DIck Van Dyke: Laura's toe stuck in the spigot and Richie's birth...

by Anonymousreply 92December 15, 2018 1:45 PM

Way better in color sorry ancient gays.

by Anonymousreply 93December 18, 2018 1:09 PM

Have they ever colorized the William Holden episode?

by Anonymousreply 94December 18, 2018 1:21 PM

Colorization has come a long way. When Ted Turner tried it in the 1980’s so many films he did this to looked looked terrible but their techniques have really improved. Many of the black and white musicals from the 1930’s would be interesting to see in color such as The Great Ziegfeld or Ziegfeld Girl; it would be great to see Lana Turner and Hedy Lamarr in color while they were at the height of their beauty.

by Anonymousreply 95December 18, 2018 1:23 PM

R94 not yet, would it kill cbs to colorize all the episodes? It would probably get better ratings then their new shit shows.

by Anonymousreply 96December 18, 2018 1:24 PM

A colored episode? They're putting negroes on the television now? Heavens!
