Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum in 'Cape Fear' (1962)

Gregory Peck, who produced the film, didn't like the original novel's title "The Executioners". When thinking of a new title, he decided that movies named after places tended to be very successful, so he looked at a map of the U.S. until he happened upon Cape Fear in North Carolina.

At first, Mitchum didn't want to do the film but finally relented after Gregory Peck and J. Lee Thompson delivered a case of bourbon to his home. His reply was, "Okay, I've drunk your bourbon. I'm drunk. I'll do it."

Peck later said regarding Robert Mitchum, "I had given him the role and had paid him a terrific amount of money. It was obvious he had the better role. I thought he would understand that, but he apparently thought he acted me off the screen. I didn't think highly of him for that." (Peck was originally going to play Max Cady, but fortunately Mitchum agreed to play it instead. Max Cady was a really twisted character, can you imagine Gregory Peck being that sleazy and perverted? No way!)

According to Robert Mitchum, during the filming of the final fight scene between him and Gregory Peck, Peck once accidentally punched him for real. Mitchum, knowing that Peck didn't mean to and ever the professional, refused to break character and continued filming the scene. However, upon entering his trailer, Mitchum said that he "literally collapsed" due to the impact of the punch and said that he felt it for days afterwards. Mitchum said, "I don't feel sorry for anyone dumb enough who picks a fight with him (Peck)."

Mitchum was incredibly sexy in some scenes of this movie.

One of his best roles for sure. Animal magnetism...

According to Polly Bergen, Mitchum cut his hand on a cabinet during their scene. "His hand was covered in blood, my back was covered in blood. We just kept going, caught up in the scene. They came over and physically stopped us."

Bergen suffered minor bruises in a scene where her character struggles with Cady. He was supposed to drag her through various doors on the set, but a crewmember mistakenly left all those doors locked, so that when Mitchum forced Bergen through the doors, she was actually being used as a ram to push them open.

Gregory Peck on the set of "Cape Fear". Peck was very hot as well.

Polly Bergen sucked. She never could act (or sing).

by Anonymousreply 5April 17, 2017 1:13 PM

LOVE this movie. Love both Mitchum and Peck separately, together in this movie....amazing. I think Greg showed incredible judgement to insist on Mitch. I can't think of anyone else who could've made 'Cape Fear' work.

OP, I'd love to buy you a case of bourbon!

I can't think of anyone else who could've made 'Cape Fear' work.

Gee, thanks.

The daughter in the original film was played by gorgeous little Lori Martin, a ringer for young Elizabeth Taylor, who also reprised Liz's role on the TV series of National Velvet.

by Anonymousreply 9April 17, 2017 1:26 PM

Yeah sorry Bob, your remake can't compare. Go make a shitty comedy.

by Anonymousreply 10April 17, 2017 1:26 PM

[quote]Polly Bergen sucked. She never could act (or sing).

Since she sucked, she didn't have to do those other things.

by Anonymousreply 11April 17, 2017 2:28 PM

R10 I disagree. The 1990s remake with Robert Deniro as the crazy con, and the family played by Nick Nolte, as lawyer, Jessica Lange as the mom, and crazy little Juliette Lewis as the scared-fascinated daughter, more than lived up to the older one, with a few extra twists.

I love both these movies, and get velcroed to each if I'm clicking and it happens to be on. The con tracks the family, insinuates himself into their lives through the daughter, and closes in like a python. You start to feel claustrophobic, hopeless, and fearful. (I forget why the dad doesn't just call the authorities-- Professional pride? fear for his reputation?).

Both Mitchum and DeNiro are excellent as remorseless psychopaths bent on revenge. Michum, whose movie was of a more innocent time, was just as horrifying and depraved as over-the-top de Nino was in his.

Highly, highly recommend each. Bourbons for the house.

Gregory was a gorgeous and petulant homosexual who was rumored to be horse-hung.

by Anonymousreply 13April 17, 2017 3:04 PM

It should also be mentioned that the film's score was pretty effective as well.

by Anonymousreply 14April 17, 2017 3:05 PM

R12 here. Just remembered. The lawyer had withheld evidence that would have assisted his client in avoiding a guilty verdict in a previous case. While in jail, the convict learns of his lawyer's double cross, and decides on revenge.

Mitchen took a bushel of Peck's pecker

by Anonymousreply 16May 18, 2017 11:08 AM

The movie was incredibly tedious and Peck has always been a terrible, terrible actor.

Sorry give me 12 Angry Men or Sweet Smell of Success anytime over this cliche laden bore.

by Anonymousreply 17May 18, 2017 11:14 AM

I always feel the need to shower after watching Sweet Smell of Success but it is a great movie. There isn't one looker in 12 Angry Men but I'm a sucker for movies that deal with the flaws in our criminal justice system and Cape Fear is special. It works because Mitchum is handsome and sexy as hell and a 'real good talker' and it is difficult to believe that someone with that much charisma and sex appeal would need to rape a woman let alone take pleasure in beating and torturing them as well as committing murder but then no one thought that about Ted Bundy. Lori Martin was phenomenal in this. The scene where she's growing more panicked and hysterical because she thinks she's being stalked by Cady is a tour du force of acting.

by Anonymousreply 18May 18, 2017 12:27 PM

I have a question for fans of Cape Fear. What do you think Cady did to the woman he picked up in the bar that she wouldn't want to testify to in a trial or want the folks back home to read about in the local paper? Surely anal sex wasn't that big of a taboo in the early 60's but rape is rape no matter what hole is used so I'm thinking he sodomized her with an inanimate object or used his fist. Even as a kid I knew something really weird had taken place.

by Anonymousreply 19May 18, 2017 12:36 PM

I never understood why Mitchum was alway presented as devastatingly handsome. He's OK but there were dozen of actors far more attractive and better built. He had a good publicity machine.

by Anonymousreply 20May 18, 2017 4:04 PM

Peck could play sleazy when he wanted to...DUEL IN THE SUN anyone?

by Anonymousreply 21May 18, 2017 4:25 PM

That poor, frowsy woman in the picture at R4! Those glasses! That hair! You just know she lived alone in a tiny apartment with seven cats. And, stand up straight, girl!

by Anonymousreply 22May 18, 2017 5:04 PM

I always thought Candy beat the woman in a way that didn't show, or tortured her, maybe burned her with a cigarette or twisted her nipples.

by Anonymousreply 23May 18, 2017 6:45 PM

Bib Mitchem was always a total asshole but he knew how to act.

by Anonymousreply 24May 18, 2017 6:50 PM

Mitchum just oozed animal magnetism, he was sex on a stick. He always had the badboy image. I've always wondered hoe much Budwiser paid to have their sign over the bar.

by Anonymousreply 25May 18, 2017 7:06 PM

The original Cape Fear was the superior version IMHO. Mitchum was at his magnetic best. Gregory Peck was always fine as fuck and he and Mitchum made Cape Fear worth watching.

I wonder if they hooked up during filming? Who'd be the bottom? They're both ruggedly butch.

by Anonymousreply 26May 18, 2017 7:18 PM

Mitchum had that deep, slow, drawl, sleepy bedroom eyes, and a dimpled chin which I always thought was sexy. He was handsome but not devastatingly handsome and that was good enough for me. A great double feature starring Mitchum is Cape Fear and The Night Of The Hunter. All I need is a Dark and Stormy Night, a few tokes of good weed, a delivery from my favorite Taco joint, and these two screen gems, and I am good to go any night of the week. I bet Laughton thought he had died and gone to heaven on TNOTH. Elsa, too;)

by Anonymousreply 27May 18, 2017 9:16 PM

Peck was plenty sleazy in The Boys From Brazil. I thought Bergen was better than good in CF. Particulary in the scene where she believes Cady is going to rape her and she's hysterical and then he throws her in the closet and locks the door and she realizes it's her daughter he's after. Scary as fuck. Bergen and Martin were both outstanding in those harrowing scenes with Mitchum.

by Anonymousreply 28May 18, 2017 9:23 PM

Love this movie

by Anonymousreply 29May 18, 2017 9:30 PM

Mitchum was a conservative creep in real life, not sexy at all.

by Anonymousreply 30May 18, 2017 9:50 PM

[quote]it is difficult to believe that someone with that much charisma and sex appeal would need to rape a woman

I don't think you understand rape.

by Anonymousreply 31May 18, 2017 11:56 PM

Yay cape fear filmed in my home town.

by Anonymousreply 32May 19, 2017 1:54 AM

I have a vagina. I know all too well about rape, r31. But after re-reading what I wrote I do realize it sounds rather dunderheaded and ill informed. I guess what I meant to say is how easily it is for a psychopath who is charming, charismatic, and attractive to hide his or her darker, more sinister, character traits because on the surface they appear normal and appealing and desirable. And harmless. Like Ted Bundy. Cady certainly had an air of danger about him but even the world weary woman he picks up at the bar who sizes up right away that he's no saint can't guess at the depth of his depravity. He definitely looks like he can get all the sex he wants so rapist doesn't really spring to mind at first glance. I'll stop now:)

I loved how Poly Bergen went from cute game show panel girl to movie star. Got to give her her props.
