Let's Talk about Wade Nichols, aka Dennis Parker - 1970s -1980s Porn Star, Recording Artist, and Soap Opera Actor
His life story would make an incredible movie. He was gay, but appeared in only one gay porn movie - "Boynapped," in 1975. After that, he became a leading man in straight porn films. He was a trained actor and singer who had some disco era fame with the songs "Like an Eagle" and "New York by Night." He then transitioned to mainstream work, where he starred in the "Edge of Night Soap Opera" for five years. He died of AIDS in 1985 at just 38 years of age.
He was hot and sexy in that 1970s blow-dried way.

Here's a still from his single gay porn movie, "Boynapped." The guy on the left is Jamie Gillis, who was also a big straight porn star, but who was bisexual in his daily life. Gillis was almost exclusively in straight porn throughout his career.

OP, what makes you think this guy was gay and not just bisexual/gay4pay?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 11, 2017 2:28 AM

He was in a porn movie from 1979 called "Take Off," which was actually very good, and he was excellent in it. He played a kind of Dorian Gray character who never ages, starting in the 1920s and going through the 1970s. You get to see how his character changes throughout the decades, and he really did a great job in the movie.
Incidentally, this movie also has the first onscreen appearance of a young and cute Peter Scolari (in a non-sex role, unfortunately).

R7 In interviews with his co-stars and friends, they all confirmed that he was gay in his private life. He was actually Jacques Morali's lover for a while, which probably got him his record deal.

Eric Edwards, a well-known 1970s and 80s straight porn star, made a movie with him called "Love You," which was directed by John Derek (Bo's hubby). The movie features a nude wrestling match between Nichols and Edwards. In an interview, Edwards said he knew Nichols was gay, and Nichols was more nervous about doing the nude scene than Edwards was. Edwards said he pulled Nichols aside and said, "Let's just go for it," which they did. Edwards said Nichols never made a move on him and was a complete pro and that Edwards really respected him.

He had to leave Edge of Night in early October 1984 due to his quickly declining health. He was losing a lot of weight and having terrible coughing spells. His last episode aired on October 18, 1984, just 12 days shy of his 5th anniversary of his first airdate (October 30, 1979) on the show.

When he was clearly ill, he had some pretty hot and heavy open kissing scenes with the actress who played Chris Egan. Same with Joel Crothers and Sandy Faison near the end of Edge. The media made such a big deal over the Rock Hudson/Linda Evans kiss, you have to wonder how many instances there were of actors with HIV or full blown AIDS who kissed female co-stars in daytime that fell under the radar. In 1983/1984, given what little was known about how the disease was and was not contracted, I can't imagine some of these women weren't terrified and didn't make a bee-line to a testing clinic as soon as they learned that their screen partner had the virus.

FWIW, this is what his Wikipedia entry read:
Though Crothers was gay, he remained in the closet publicly and was engaged to actress Veleka Gray at the time of his death. They became close friends on the set when they played the lovers Julian Cannell and Vicki Paisley in Somerset. He chose to share his sexual orientation only with his friends and co-workers. Crothers died from AIDS-related lymphoma on November 6, 1985. His remains were cremated and scattered in Lake George, New York.

Dennis/Wade did try to play it straight for the press for his porn career since he starred in mostly straight porn. Being labeled bisexual wasn't a bad thing back then. Funny he picked Sharon Mitchell as the co-star he liked best and fooled around with off-camera, since she was very boyish and endogenous looking then.
Jamie Gillis, George Payne, Rick/Jim Cassidy, Michael Gaunt, and David Morris were straight leaning bisexuals who had good careers. Besides Wade, Jack Wrangler, Marc Stevens (although I think he had some trouble coming to terms with it), RJ Reynolds and Zebedy Colt were gay men who worked mostly in straight porn over gay porn back then. Several of the directors back then were gay too like Chuck Vincent, The Amero Brothers and John Christopher. You had the chance to work more, payed a little more, and act/direct in more ambitiously made movies.

Sharon Gabet did an interview a few years ago and talks about Wade Nichols (Dennis Parker) and Joel Crothers' s deaths. She also allude to her knowledge of Nichols' adult film career:
SHARON GABET: I loved them all so much. Joel was such a beautiful spirit (and gorgeous man). We were very close. He took me with him to his favorite haunts on a "night on the town" once and it was an outrageous night, I will tell you that! He called me from his hospital bed a few days before he passed to say good-bye. His spirits were high and he joked around as usual. So sad. Of course, I worked with Dennis quite a bit and he was also one with a fabulous sense of humor who always had great stories to tell about his "unique" theatrical background. Dennis was getting ill toward the end of the show and we all knew there was something terrible going on, but no one knew how serious it was then. He was losing weight and did not feel well. We made fun of him for being cranky - no one knew what AIDS was then. But he knew we loved him.

More on Wade. This bio says that Nichols ended his adult film career after snagging his "Edge of Night" role, but that doesn't seem to be true. His work on "Edge" began in 1979, but he made one more adult movie after that - "Blonde Ambition," in 1981. He's also credited with the film "Blue Voodoo" in 1984, but that movie was actually made in the late 70s.

This contradicts other reports about Gabet from that time in which due to ignorance about how AIDS/HIV was transmitted and her pregnancy, she refused to kiss Parker on EON because she [bold]knew[/bold] that he had the illness.

r114 Sharon Gabet (Raven) was paired with Larkin Malloy (Sky) by the time Edge ended in 1984, so she wouldn't have had any kissing scenes with Dennis Parker (Derek), who was paired Jennifer Taylor (Chris Egan). Raven's brief fling with Derek happened in 1980.
In 1984, the facts about HIV transmission were not widely known. Transmission via saliva from coughing or kissing was still uncertain. Transmission via sneezing was still uncertain. How long the virus could live outside the body was unknown. Some hospitals were turning away AIDS patients because they didn't know exactly how the virus was spread.
The Edge cast may have suspected Parker had that new disease that was killing gay men, but they couldn't be certain it was AIDS. All they knew for sure is that he was obviously sick. Many people don't want to be around sick people who are coughing, afraid of picking up their germs and consequently get a cold, the flu, or whatever. That's just human nature to want to avoid getting sick.
Pregnant women are notorious about wanting to protect their unborn babies from potential illnesses. Again, that's human nature. Look up the story of actress Gene Tierney who picked up German measles while pregnant from an infected, overzealous fan hugging her. Tierney subsequently gave birth to a deaf, mentally disabled baby as a result of that infection. That story may not be well known today, but it was commonly cited by pregnant woman for several decades (and it was also part of the plotline of the 1980 movie The Mirror Cracked starring Elizabeth Taylor, Angela Lansbury and Rock Hudson).
Sharon Gabet was pregnant with her first child in 1984 so she was naturally concerned about the baby's health. Any expectant mother working around someone who is obviously sick and coughing heavily day after day after day would be worried. And its clear by looking at r40's video that Parker was very sick by the time he filmed his last episode in late Sept/early Oct 1984.
Yes, it was would be homophobic by today's standards given the information we now. However, in 1984 given what little information was out there, her reaction was perfectly natural. No doubt, others in the cast were also concerned, but Gabet, being pregnant and the show's star, generated more buzz when she raised her concerns.

Edge ended in 1984. The Elisa test for HIV wasn't developed until 1985.
Joel Crothers may have suspected he was HIV positive, but there was no way to verify it at the time until he started showing symptoms.
He appears healthy in the final episode of Edge that r105 posted. As noted, it was filmed 11 months before Crothers died.

I get all of that, R115, and I clearly indicated that likely drivers for Gabet's reaction were ignorance and (understandably) wanting to protect her unborn child. I'm merely repeating what I've read more than once over the years about Gabet allegedly refusing to kiss Parker once it was known that he was ill. Perhaps those accounts were exaggerated or completely false. I was questioning how they were contradictory to statements that were attributed to her years later.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | April 14, 2017 3:02 AM

r119, Again, Gabet wasn't paired with Parker on screen, so their characters would not have been kissing. There was no reason for her to refuse to kiss him since the script wouldn't have called for it.
At the time, I recall rumors that the pregnant Gabet was worried about working around him and picking up germs. I also recall a rumor that the reason he was written out of the show was because Gabet insisted on it. Whether those are true, I don't know, but looking at the video of his final episode at r40, it's clear he was very sick.
TPTB may have opted to write him out (with or without prompting from Gabet) to allow him some time to recover from his obvious illness. They clearly wanted to leave the door open to bring Derek back since no onscreen explanation was offered for his absence until the next to the last episode.
As for the changing story over the years, people grow and gain new insights, so their explanations for their behavior evolves over time. The various stories over the years likely reflect that changing insights/understanding.
I sincerely doubt you'll ever hear Sharon Gabet admit publicly to pushing him out, if, in fact, she did that.

I remember Gabet saying in an interview that there was actor, whom she didn't name, had AIDS, She said that he hacked up a lung every day, and that she was afraid of being around him, as she was pregnant. I was never sure if she was talking about Parker or Crothers, but it's clear now that she meant Parker. You really can't blame her. 1983/1984 was the infancy of AIDS becoming part of the cultural landscape, and no one was sure how it was transmitted. I'd have been terrified too, especially if I were pregnant.

I heard/read that same interview r121. That was the interview I was referring to my posts at r115 and r120.
It was at least 15 years ago, if not 20 years, that I saw/heard that. I believe it was some kind of radio interview or podcast where she said that.

Having been a gay teenager during those years, I can attest to the fact that it was an extremely frightening time. People didn't know enough about AIDS in the early days to be sure it couldn't be transmitted through a mere cough. I wouldn't blame Gabert for being worried about her health, as well as her baby's. I'm sure in retrospect, she probably feels bad for her reaction to Parker being sick, but at the time, no one knew what was going on and had to be extra careful.
Hell, I didn't kiss or sleep with anyone for a 2-year stretch.

R113 Actually, his last adult movie was likely John Derek's feature, "Love You," in 1979. I know this one was indeed filmed in 1979, because in an interview, Eric Edwards, the other male lead in the movie, talked about Bo Derek being on location with them, and this was right after "10" had come out and made her a star. "10" also came out in 1979.
Since Nichols got his Edge of Night gig in 1979, it makes sense that "Love You" would have been his adult film swan song. By the way, his body was at its absolute hottest in that movie. And his nude wrestling scene with Edwards, albeit short, was very erotic. Edwards said the actual scene was rather lengthy, but it was cut for the final print because Derek decided it was a little too homoerotic. Damn.

It's heartbreaking watching him in R40's video. He looked so sick, and if you watch closely, he appears to have trouble even walking across the room, like it's painful and taking every bit of strength he had to move. I admire him for making that effort, though. He really persevered.

Philip Casnoff also in those clips starred in the original cast of "Chess" on Broadway and sang "One Night In Bangkok". His co-star was David Carroll who also died of AIDS. r132 That's a great idea. Could make a fantastic film. With the right script and director, as you said.
Not a lot of cast members around to offer inside scoop on what it was like. So, need to interview them fairly soon. Sharon Gabet's 65 now. Obviously she could provide the best insights to those last couple of years.
Ann Flood is 82. No idea how her health or memory is. Charles Flohe (Preacher) is 59 and likely has some tales to tell.
Lori Loughlin (Jody) and Mark Arnold (Gavin) were both gone by the final year.
Some of actors who played the minor characters might have some good insights. Marianna Alda (Didi Bannister), Lela Ivy (Mitzi Martin), Sandy Faison (Beth Correll), Ernie Townsend (Cliff Nelson), Jennifer Taylor (Chris Egan).

R11 There might be a reason why "Manhole" (or "Manhold") has disappeared. This comes from an article about the director, David E. Durston, and references information contained in the book "Sleazoid Express." ( Also, I've read that it was in 3D. Not a techie, but if copies exist, perhaps that complicates transfer ??)
From here, Durston’s career as a filmmaker goes into its swan song. Durston had “always had a hand in the specialized and insular netherworld of gay hardcore porn,” according to Landis and Clifford’s indispensable book, Sleazoid Express (2002). Durston wrote and directed these last couple films under the name “Spencer Logan” and/or “David Ransom.” In 1975 he made Boy-napped! a hardcore gay porn film starring the late Jamie Gillis–-who, as it happened, passed away just a few months before Durston in 2010. In 1978 another gay hardcore film Manhole was made, also with Gillis. Landis and Clifford say this last film was called Manhold, not Manhole, as IMDB has it, and that it was not released because one of the cast members got a role in Escape from Alcatraz, and the association with gay hardcore would have been bad for this unspecified person’s career, as well as for Clint Eastwood’s blockbuster.

Manhole/Manhold was released in theaters. More likely it didn't do that well in theaters and the prints were lost over the years. They didn't think about the long-term value of these movies and attempt to preserve them. Quite a bit of the prints of 70s porn films are missing, and some of them never released in any another form.

Eric Edwards did an interview a couple of years ago where he talked about making the movie "Love You," which also starred Nichols. He said he knew Nichols was gay, but Edwards was never uncomfortable around him and Nichols was a complete professional.
Edwards thought John Derek, Bo's husband and the director of the movie, might have been bisexual or closeted, because he was really into filming the nude wrestling scene between Nichols and Edwards.
Edwards said Nichols was more nervous about filming that scene than he was.

That was an interesting read, if not quite on the level of pathos etc. as the Helen Wood/Dolly Sharp one. They don't try to downplay his vanity or ability to use others (Jacques Morali, it would seem). It's not clarified but it wouldn't surprise me if Dennis kept paying his half of the rent controlled apartment, or more likely the full amount, while with Morali. He and Joey probably never broke up.
It's amazing how Dennis' looks vary in the pics. He looks handsome in one shot, not i the next, handsome again then not. And the pics appear to be roughly chronological. He looks downright cartoonish in the pic with Dinah Shore. He looked his best in the two clean shaven pics that look like early headshots. I'd bet that his body looked better too - his face looks fuller than in his porn era pics.
I didn't think he looked as bad as I was expecting in his final Edge of Night scene. He didn't look as bad ad Rock Hudson, for instance. That ski slope nosejob was a mistake.

R197 Morali seemed to be very difficult to deal with and could be verbally abusive towards Dennis. It was mutually beneficial relationship, it would seem. Although it looks like Morali really fell in love with him while Dennis still loved Joey. I get the feeling they never really broke up either.
Yes, his looks changed and not for the better in his later years. He aged quickly, his face could looks gaunt, and the nose and dental work wasn't a improvement. I wonder who idea is was, Dennis (who could be vain) or Morali who thought he'd be more marketable with the "improvements" and looking less ethnic.

R118 here, and R255 from the Gossip in Hollywood thread. I'd forgotten about this thread. I just read the long remembrance above with Dennis's brother and exes. I only spent a few hours with him that night and it was not great, and I think I mentioned his boyfriend "Terry" walked in. I realize now it was "Joey." Because of the timing, I recall wondering at the time if Joey had been watching us from somewhere before he walked in on us naked. I didn't see the sweet side of Dennis, probably because of the drugs. I was a one-night-stand, or a one-hour-stand, with him and was kind of amazed he talked to me. I was only about 19 then, a twink, skinny with light-brown hair and a bad complexion. There were so many interesting gay guys in NYC back then. I was always looking for love and knew it wouldn't be happening with Dennis. Uncle Charlie's was very close to his apartment, which I think was on 38th near Third. I remember it wasn't a long walk from the bar. Obviously we didn't exchange phone numbers, and shortly afterwards I moved in with my first "real" boyfriend on the UES. I never saw Dennis after that but I remember a lot of the crowd that was around back then. There was Potossa de Lafayette, a Filipino drag queen who was Dali's muse. I knew Pablo, who was Paul Lynde's long-term hustler/boyfriend. I left NYC in '75 and moved to L.A. L.A. had nothing on NYC. You would never meet the kind of people out in Hollywood that you met in the city back then

R216 Wow! What a great story! Sorry your time with Dennis wasn't a good one, but it gave you a great story! The Rialto Report story says Dennis was into twinky boys with slight frames, so based on your description of yourself from that time, it's not surprising that he was attracted to you. What do you remember about him picking you up? Did he give you a line, or was it more just, "come back to my place?"

This snippet from it I found to be particularly amusing -
Carter Stevens (adult film director):
When I made ‘Jailbait’ (1977), he was my lead actor. We shot it up in Nyack NY, which was a sort of a mini porn capital for filming in those days. I had this gay make-up artist working on the crew, and after a couple of days, he proudly came to me to announce that he had “turned” one of my actors.
I asked him which one?
He said it was the star, Wade Nichols!
I inquired if he knew that Wade had been a professional call-boy before the films?
The make-up artist looked pained, and said: “Oh that queen! He told me I was his first!”

Here's an EON scene that aired back in May 1980 with his boyfriend Joey Alan Phipps as the puppeteer. Fast forward to 12min 30sec in and that's where he starts. The fans really didn't care for him, just look at the comments posted under the clip.
I agree with the comments about this Joey guy. I wasn't much of an Allen Fawcett fan but he's miles ahead of this rather creepy and effeminate version of Kelly.
Joey Allan Phipps will come across as creepy and disturbed. Allen Fawcett is more masculine, sure of himself, blonde, blue-eyed. He and Lori Loughlin are supposed to remind everyone of the Blue Lagoon.
Sadly, one can see why Joey Allen Phipps didn't last long in the role of Kelly McGrath. He just wasn't right for the role.

I have a hard time seeing Joey as a top. But who knows. Dennis seemed to be really attached to him. Joey put off contracting HIV for several years after Dennis died. According to Dennis' brother, Joey contracted it in the early 90s. Sounds like they stayed in touch after Dennis death.

It's interesting that in all of the threads about gay-for-pay porn stars, there's always a vocal contingent who insist that they CANNOT possibly be straight, yet here we have an example of a gay man who did a lot of straight porn, yet no one says he cannot possibly be gay if he does straight porn.

I think the number of gay guys on EON has been overestimated throughout the years. People claim that Joel Crothers was gay, but where's the proof? At the time of his death from lymphoma, he was engaged to Veleka Gray. He was also romantically linked to actress on AW whose name escapes me. Denny Albee was straight. Joel Crothers had gayface for days (although a handsome one when he was young). There has long been bearding arrangements in show business, the soaps included. Dennis had some as did Joel. I read the RR article the other day. It had a few interesting tidbits, yet seemed oddly underwhelming. Regardless, what a life he led, including being a call boy (one of the intriguing bits). Unfortunately, his disco song LIKE AN EAGLE has been stuck in my head ever since – and it isn’t even that good!
I've never heard about him doing drugs other than pot. He seemed to be far too professional for that to the case. Maybe was a smoker and that helped cause his fast aging along with the bad plastic surgery.
He was a bottom and into getting fisted (two more intriguing bits), and likely used poppers for that (however, I have no idea if long-term poppers use effs up one’s looks). R216 – who briefly tricked with him – mentioned drug use.

No, of course I never witnessed Joel Crothers having sex with a woman. But I do know he was engaged to be married to Veleka Gray at the time of his death. That could hardly be considered a bearding relationship. They were very much in love. He was also romantically linked to another P&G actress whose name escapes me. Possibly Millette Alexander, though I'm drawing a bit of a blank on that. Whatever the case, the evidence is there that he was straight. I take the anecdotal evidence that he was gay with a grain of salt. His romantic linkage with female actresses plus his effortless masculinity and his great chemistry with his leading ladies tell me that he was most likely straight. I know I'm right. My gut rarely fails me in these matters.

The quality of the straight porn back then was far superior to the gay side. Much more time, money and effort was put into the straight films. They has decent scripts back then, directors they had some idea of filmmaking, and decent to good actors. There were lots of gay men both in front and behind the cameras. Wade, Jack, Zebedy Colt, RJ Reynolds, Marc Stevens, Chuck Vincent, John Christopher, The Amero Brothers, just to name some. This appealed to the ones with artistic aspirations and allowed them to continue to work on their craft.

Most of the early guys in "The Golden Age" were real actors that made the move because they were real movies that played in neighborhood theaters. There was about ten minutes where people thought hardcore might actually go mainstream. Directors hired guys who could act and even dick size didn't matter since most were average or a little bigger. R308 because Jack Wrangler or John Robert Stillman was one of those ex gay types that married a woman just to appear heterosexual, all while he cheated on her with lots of men. A 1998 lawsuit against New York City demanded $1M for loss of conjugal relations with wife Margaret Whiting,
R216/R310 who did you date or sleep with? I'm not surprised that they were sad, they were all whores, since being an escort on the side is how anyone that's in porn makes money, and a lot were into drugs as well.

How would New York City be responsible for a loss of conjugal relations?

Jack Wrangler was always openly gay. Case closed.

They were sad in the way that they seemed damaged somehow from earlier in their lives, at least the ones I knew. I think the first guy I dated was Jamie Wingo, who was a porn actor partnered with another actor named Leo Ford. After Leo died, I met him in Hollywood. These guys would know that I would find out their "sidelines" eventually and they would try to ease me into the knowledge of their "other" life. The way Jamie did it was to invite me to a party and then, when it was time to go, he told he was the "gift" for the host whose birthday it was. I don't judge. They knew that. Jamie eventually moved away and wrote me sweet letters from, I think, Maine, or someplace like that. They're all gone now. But they were sweet. That's all. Don't judge.

Edge Of Night was best prior to hiring all the male-model types. Anyone remember the Nicole Travis/Adam Drake/Stephanie Martin days?

If he was R317 then why did he marry a woman and get into some lame marriage of convenience? If he was actually gay and open/out that's pathetic and akin to being ex gay or a total closet queen. But he was always an idiot and had no talent other than being a professional cum dumpster.
Here's the lawsuit information.

He was gay gay gay. he married a gay icon of his generation. He lost his virginity with a woman ON FILM. Actually he was with two women in "China Sisters" after making 15 gay films and he was bad at it and had a dildo shoved up while he was at it. Read his book or see the documentary. His "wife" knew, accepted and understood his cheating with guys.

R320 Watch the documentary about his life, "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon." He explains that he was gay, was always gay, and was gay when he married Margaret Whiting. He was up front with her about his sexuality, and she accepted it. He explains why he married her and why the marriage ultimately worked for both of them, and when you see the movie, you can understand it.
