If you're talking about Westworld I don't agree. Barnes' Logan was an asshole and Simpson's William started despising him more and more as the show went on. These two didn't have chemistry in the sense that I'd need to see them get close. There was something in the beginning, when it was sort of hinted that Logan might want William to join an orgy with him but it was made clear William didn't want it. I generally like Barnes but he didn't do a good job in Westworld. Others were way better actors than him. Since he replaced Eion Bailey it's possible he didn't have enough time to prepare for the role but at that point it's the production's problem. Jimmi did a great job and it certainly changed my perception of his abilities.

I saw it mentioned somewhere that Simpson got on really well with Evan Rachel Wood on the set. They were apparently constantly trying to guess what would happen next since they were delivered only partial scripts. Could be PR talk, though.

My point being that a major plot in WW depends on the audience buying Jimmi as a romantic lead.

WW is the first time he played the romantic lead. He was shocked when he started shooting and realized he was paired up with ERW and would carry the plot.

He was also the only cast member to figure out a twist prior to be given the specific reveal script.

Yeah regardless of how the character twists, Jimmi is believable as a romantic lead to begin with. A genuine, not conventionally "studly" romantic lead which is refreshing. And he could be gay or bi, or he and Melanie Lynskey could just be nice, down-to-earth people who decided to forgo a toxic divorce. Whatever, I like him.
