I would enjoy touching butts with Perry, Kimmy's new love interest played by Daveed Diggs.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 21, 2017 2:34 AM |
I finished it today
TBH I think they could have gotten away with 10 episodes
13 felt stretched out, especially with the Lillian subplots
Josh Charles was a great addition and surprisingly sexy. Sorry he didn't last longer.
Billy Magnussen was bad.

I've only see the first couple episodes but Mikey going off to be with a guy who is more similar to himself felt realistic, Titus and Mikey never felt real to me.

That line killed me.

The Linda subplot was straight out of DataLounge. I loved it.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 22, 2017 3:25 AM |
I was pissed that they broke up Mikey and Titus. Why oh why do writers always break up potential gay couples but then drag out the most mundane straight white coupling? Next season better be about Mikey and Titus getting back together and their new relationship. I was hoping Mikey would become a regular this season. Fuck you Tina Fey! Fuck you up your sorry, skinny, bony, whatever you call that thing!

Tina only seems to hire her friends. Everybody in the cast seems to have some connection to SNL and 30 Rock. Judah Friedlander is back, Scott Adsit played the voice actor. Maya Rudolph was brill as Miss Warwick but it does seem to be the Tina's Buddies Reunion Hour

I never liked Josh Charles and cannot understand why he had a career. Anyone remember him from Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter Is Dead. Christina Applegates character liking him was a mystery.

I've always thought Josh Charles was cute. First fell in love with him in THREESOME , where he played gay and ended up in a ménage à trois with roommates Stephen Baldwin and Lara Flynn Boyle. I wonder what he thinks of his presently crazy, former co-stars?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 22, 2017 4:01 PM |
Josh Charles' father says something like, "That's what I get for having a baby with a woman -- he's half-girl!"

I thought Seasons 1 & 2 were better. Too many sub plots in Season 3. Carol Kanes character has become tiresome, imo.
I have no idea how Titus doesn't burst out laughing at some of the lines he delivers.
Maya Rudolph as Warwick was hysterical, esp at the New Jersey telethon, trying to pull her gown over her head.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 22, 2017 4:21 PM |
The gas station bathroom episode: WTF?
My favorite was Titus singing back up on Judah Friedlanders songs.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 22, 2017 4:33 PM |
I thought the new season was good. Titus is a hoot.
I liked that they didn't make Kimmy win at everything (Columbia, crossing guard).
The Carol Kane story line was drawn out a bit too much. But I liked her love interest (forget his name)
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 22, 2017 5:45 PM |
Season 1 was brilliant because there was no network interference. Season 3 could have used some network interference.
Series that run a long time have large supporting casts. This show goes through its supporting cast like tissues. Too quickly used and thrown away.
Season 3 spends too much time on the leads and they are now mostly repeating themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 22, 2017 5:58 PM |
Whatever. I enjoyed the new season, after not particularly caring for Season 2. So I'm more than satisfied.

I'm not familiar with him. This was my first exposure to him, and I thought he came off amateurish. I looked him up to see what else he was in and was surprised to learn that he'd won a Tony last year for HAMILTON. Maybe he's a better rapper/singer than actor, I thought. Can anyone recommend something else he's been in where he was good?

I bet they're not finished with Mikey and Titus yet, and next season Titus will try to win Mikey back. Didn't Titus do a "God as my witness" speech, a la Scarlett at the end of the book?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 23, 2017 12:48 PM |
I like Daveed Diggs in this because he comes off so real. Everyone else is such a cartoon that he grounds it. His line about Kimmie getting into Columbia on a full scholarship when he had to work his ass off to get there was great.

I wanted to see more of Mikey's pupazza.
And Anna Camp's Deirdre Robespierre.

Josh Charles is hot. I would like it if his character develops a conscience while in Gitmo and then he and Jacqueline can get together for real as Russ takes his place as the corrupt favorite son in the Snyder family. Then again, Josh Charles seems to have it in his contract that he won't ever take off his shirt onscreen, that's a shame.

R72 he got completely naked in THREESOME. Then again, that was 23 years ago, when gratuitous nudity was still prevalent in the '90s. Miss those days. Today, you're lucky to see any skin (especially male) in teen/college comedies.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 23, 2017 4:31 PM |
Random question: Does anyone know where they film the exterior of Kimmy's apartment? I can't think of a part of Manhattan that quite looks like that, but I don't know of any place in Brooklyn of Queens that that tugboat might be.

Flouncy broke up with D'fwan, both played by Titus B.
Kimmy's professor is married to a woman, both lesbian characters played by Rachel D.
Is Tina Fey trying to tell us something about gay couples?
by Anonymous | reply 103 | May 25, 2017 6:26 PM |
You're really stretching things, claiming that Titus claiming to break up with D'fwan (from another series and thus another universe) is the same thing as Dratch playing two parts. Sorry.

I found it hilarious that they made fun of the names 'Jeff' and 'Linda' because those are my aunt and uncle's names. Well, they're divorced now. Aunt Linda is a dental hygienist, though. And the name Jeff does sound odd if you think about it.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | May 27, 2017 6:28 PM |
It's also funny because Jeff is the name of Tina Fey's husband.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | May 27, 2017 6:32 PM |

Andrea Martin was talking about her husband "Gary."

by Anonymous | reply 111 | May 27, 2017 6:38 PM |
I don't care about Kimmy and her shenanigans at all (college, cross guard career, relationship drama). It's usually about the seconadary characters like Titus, Jaqueline and Lilian. But in this season? I don't know, something was just off. Jaqueline was way too passionate helping others and Lillian was just too involved with the whole romance with the Whole Food's (or whatever the food chain on the series is called) to deliver some great one liners. And I don't know if that was the case in the previous seasons, but this season the show relied way too much on stunt casting (Laura Dern, Maya Rudolph, Andrea Martin, for example) to bring in the laughs.
And am I the only one who is so over Beyonce tributes?
by Anonymous | reply 112 | May 27, 2017 6:44 PM |
R110 Jeff was the catalyst for Titus and Mikey's breakup. He is the butch guy Mikey befriended while Titus was away on the Dionne Warwick cruise; Titus suspected there was something between them 'cause they were more similar than Mikey and Titus.

Ugh, I want to get fucked by Scott Adsit so bad. He's single, right? There's something about him that turns me on so much. I'm not joking! In 30 Rock, there'd be many scenes where his huge bulge would be totally out of control.
The season was good, but sometimes Kimmy just seemed TOO retarded. The whole crossing guard thing was pretty weak.
Lillian is great, but sometimes her voice gets stuck in my head and drives me insane. But I love how she's a main character.
Josh Charles was so sexy. Mmm.

I think the only non-American actor that has been on Kimmy Schmidt is Adam Campbell in season 1. Campbell is also on that other Fey/Carlock produced show Great News. I also don't care if Fey hires her friends or SNL alums for the guest spots. I'm mixed on foreign actors playing Americans on American shows and movies because some are great. I can also see why some people here get pissed about non-Americans moving and faking American accents for roles. Kate McKinnon is playing an Australian in that upcoming movie Rough Night and I wonder if her casting was done as a way of shoving it to Aussies and Brits who move here and land roles playing Americans.

Brandon Andrus, who played Mikey's new boyfriend, is so handsome, but was really under-used. I understand it wasn't about him. But the guy has starred in musicals galore and is a great singer (I've seen him perform in NYC). Glad that he got the job, but I would have loved to see more of him.

Maya Randolph was hilarious as Dionne Warwick. the wet baby corn thing for soothing singers' voices was hilariously random, and she had one of the best lines all season: "You better have a birthmark or a library card, honey, 'cause when we die on this thing, the news is gonna say, "Grammy Award-Winner Dionne Warwick and Unknown Sneaky Fool Found Dead.'"
by Anonymous | reply 125 | May 28, 2017 6:18 AM |
Adam Campbell is totally unnecessary on Great News. Why the fuck would a British guy come to America to work at a local news station? How is he even allowed to work there?
I bet Tina didn't have oversight on that casting choice, because she will not hire non-Americans (and good for her!).
They should do a plot-line about how he's here illegally and tries to convince whatever the lead girl's name or Nicole Richie to marry him. And then he gets deported and he's off the show and the mom character can replace him, so she becomes the lead's boss and leads to even MORE drama!
I love Nicole Richie on Great News. The only reason to watch that show.

I don't think Tina Fey is heavily involved in Great News. It was Tracey Wigfield who created that show. Wigfield worked under Fey at 30 Rock for several years. I wonder if Fey suggested Horatio Sanz for Great News. She could felt sorry for him since he had some non speaking role on Modern Family.
It is usually casting directors or showrunners for basic and premium cable drama shows that hire a lot of non-Americans for roles. I remember some TV blogger used to trash HBO and AMC for hiring non-Americans for True Blood and The Walking Dead.

Maybe he's not supposed to be British. His Kimmy Schmidt character was from Connecticut, but was taught to speak with a British accent to sound richer.

There were a couple of episodes of Great News that explained why Adam Campbell's character came to America.

I also hate how American shows are becoming shorter and shorter -- I0-13 episodes per season? I liked going through the school year (September-May), knowing there was a new episode every week. We only had the summer 'til the next season. I hate having to wait nearly a year for another.

Would you rather have 10-13 good episodes, or 22 mediocre ones?

[quote]Adam Campbell is totally unnecessary on Great News. Why the fuck would a British guy come to America to work at a local news station? How is he even allowed to work there?
1. It's not a local news station, it's a national cable news network, like CNN.
2. Ever heard of Peter Jennings? Piers Morgan?
3. If you'd seen the last two episodes, you'd know that his mother (played by Christina Pickles) OWNS the network, so that's how he got the job.

R134 granted, some shows need just 10-13, but others need more time. THiS IS US, for example, could've benefited from a few more episodes instead of 18. The season felt truncated and rushed, IMO.

Was this Milwaukee boat house the inspiration for Lillian's tugboat? Fey lived nearby in Chicago for several years.

Finished the season a few days ago. I really loved it. I was a huge fan of 30 Rock so I'm happy Kimmy Schmidt is continuing that brand of frenetic, absurdist humor. I definitely want to rewatch it to pick up on things I might have missed, but a few points:
• Laura Dern was WONDERFUL! I'd hoped she would have come back near the end of the season as the whole divorce storyline wrapped up, but like a few other plots this season it never concluded. She fit into the world pretty perfectly though, and I also love seeing her.
• I missed Mikey. I liked Titus letting him go and learning to be alone, however short lived that was. Perhaps the actor couldn't film, but I loved the two of them together and would have liked to have seen that relationship grow. Maybe season 4.
• Seeing more 30 Rock alumni like Judah Friedlander, Scott Adsit, and Chris Parnell was great. Even the guy who played Tracey's fake son showed up as the choir director. Mustn't forget about Rachel Dratch in her duel role.
• You know who I thought we'd see? Lisa Kudrow as the mother! The entire second season was building up to their meeting and I'd hoped that relationship could have developed this season. For the first few episodes it felt like they had no idea what to do with Kimmy... keeping the mom in the picture, at least at the beginning, would have been nice.
If I think of more things I'll post them, but for now, get small, muchachos!

I enjoyed it a lot, too. I love Jacqueline. I love Titus and Lillian. I like Kimmy in small doses. My only complaint was breaking up Mikey and Titus for the whole season. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this season more than season two.
Oh, I didn't care for the dull guy from Hamilton who just didn't seem to fit in with the energy of the show. Otherwise, it was great.

I had hoped she would have been back for season 3. A good storyline would have been trying to use Kimmy's kidnapping story for money purposes.

Am I the only one who really isn't a fan of Lillian? I feel the character and her subplots often drag the show down.
She was fine in small doses, but not meant to be a main character.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | June 6, 2017 6:14 PM |
R143 I agree. Lillian slows down the rest of the story, and I find myself waiting for her to leave. Less is more in her case.

She plays his grandmother and he calls her "Gran" as in granny or grandmother.

I so agree. She really was great and imo the best guest star this season. Well, apart from Rachel Dratch, of course. And Amy Sedaris is a regular and always delivers.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | June 6, 2017 11:31 PM |
I like Amy Sedaris but god damn, the woman plays the same role OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Same voice, same facial expressions, same everything. You've seen her do one character, you've seen them all. There's nothing unique about any of them. Her Kimmy Schmidt character is just Jerri Blank in nicer clothes.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | June 9, 2017 12:07 AM |
R147 I totally agree with you and think she's a not funny one-note but most gays worship her.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | June 9, 2017 12:19 AM |
Is tina fey back? She ruined the second season for me. It's like she can't help herself and has to be in her shows all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | June 9, 2017 12:24 AM |
Only in one scene in one episode, r149.
I also agree about Amy Sedaris. I LOVED her as Jerri Blank, but everything else since then has been Jerri without the wig in different outfits. Maybe the accent isn't there, but the same facial ticks, the same forced overbite, the same alternating, exaggerated eye-blinking. It's disappointing. Her Mimi character is Jerri with money.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | June 9, 2017 12:32 AM |
R149 Tina only appears in one episode in season 3.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | June 9, 2017 2:01 PM |
Again, I ask since perhaps by now more people have seen the episode:
WTF was up with the awful gas station bathroom episode? Am I the only one who thought it was stupid, pointless, and unfunny?
by Anonymous | reply 152 | June 9, 2017 6:18 PM |
R152 Agreed.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | June 9, 2017 6:24 PM |
I agree, r152. It seemed like filler and didn't go anywhere. Plus, Ray Scar-otta is a drag.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | June 9, 2017 6:38 PM |
Huh, that bathroom episode was a highlight for me.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | June 9, 2017 6:44 PM |
R154 - I also thought it portrayed Titus in a really disgusting, low-class way, like some kind of animal, when they'd described how he destroyed the bathroom with shit everywhere.
Speaking of Jerri Blank, I think Kimmy reached her "Jerri Blank retarded moment" with that whole wanting to be a crossing guard thing.
Kimmy was supposed to be naive because she lived away from society for so long, but not fucking retarded.
I love Kemper and consider her an actual actress, not like one-note Amy Sedaris.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | June 11, 2017 5:26 PM |
Season 3 was better than season 2. It was a good idea to have Titus single again.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | June 11, 2017 6:17 PM |
Ellie Kemper does well at playing very dumb characters.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | June 11, 2017 8:03 PM |
The Ray Liotta episode was so terrible. It was the most blatant display of building an episode around a very special guest star since Glee. At least the Laura Dern one was funny in a pathetic way.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | June 13, 2017 6:16 PM |
Casting Ray Liotta in that role was a huge waste. He didn't bring anything new to the role. This is another prime example of the disturbing trend of major actors taking small roles that could have better gone to a talented unknown ethnic actor for whom it could have been a big credit.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | June 13, 2017 8:53 PM |
I loved Laura Dern, Maya Randolph (as she should be known henceforth), Rachel Dratch and Anna Camp but all the regulars have become deeply tiresome. And Daveed Diggs was a huge casting mistake-zero charisma and can't act his way out of a paper bag.
Season 4 won't start shooting until next February because Tina Fey will be concentrating on Great News and the Broadway bound musical version of Mean Girls.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | July 9, 2017 4:06 AM |
I'm not a Tina Fey fan and I pretty much hated the Mean Girls movie but the original songs in 30 Rock and Kimmy are a highlight of both shows so I'll buy a ticket to the Mean Girls musical.

by Anonymous | reply 164 | July 9, 2017 4:29 AM |
Daveed Digs was TERRIBLE. Surely he's not going to have any kind of career on screen. He can't act. Take it back to Broadway, gurlina.
I love Titus, but that Lemonade take off was cringeworthy.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | July 9, 2017 1:27 PM |
Another downvote for Sedaris on this show. She amps way up and distracts me during the scenes she's in.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | July 9, 2017 6:47 PM |
Yeah, I loved Sedaris in S1 but not this one. A little Sedaris goes a long way. Same goes for Carol Kane.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | July 9, 2017 10:19 PM |
I thought the gas station episode was meant to fit into the whole arc of Titus realizing he's self-centered and trying to become a better person. All the bathroom stuff was a set-up for Titus to be humiliated in front of Mikey at the end. I agree that the plotline was too fleshed out to the point that it seemed like an awkward standalone episode though. There must have been some writer with a fondness for cop shows and heist movies who just wanted to make Kimmy a pixy-stick addict for some reason. It also doesn't really make sense to show Titus being so selfish and manipulative after his whole, "I'm still a mortal fetus, don't abort me" thing from two episodes before.
Anyway, "pubic chigger bombs".

Love this show so much. Please give Titus Burgess, Jane Krakowski, and Ellie Kemper Emmys.

I hope Josh Charles' character turns good while at Gitmo and ends up with Jaqueline. He's great, and it was sad when she had to break up with Russ.
