Generally, I like Stouffers, but a lot of their stuff has nuts and cheese, which I don't like. Which frozen food companies have the best tasting meals?
Amy's...don't need to be vegetarian or vegan to like their stuff, it's damn tasty.

Stouffers by a mile. I just had their lasagna for supper tonight. I was feeling very lazy. It's too bad about the high sodium content.

I haven't had a frozen dinner in years. As Reply 12 said, eat real food such as a sandwich or a really good salad, with a tasty but not too fattening desert. That's how I've just lost almost 10 pounds.

If you like Indian, the Tandoor Chef people know what they're doing. Better yet, get them cheaper as "Deep Foods" brand meals, which is the name of the parent company. Those and others like them are at your friendly neighborhood Indian food store. I also like Saffron Road, though they are expensive.

The Michael Angelo single serve products IIRC are along the lines of Banquet: inexpensive but miniscule portions. Perhaps a meal for a child but only a snack for an adult.

Saffron Road, EVOL (really like their truffle mac & cheese). A few varieties of Lean Cuisine are not bad, like the Korean spicy beef.

Believe it or not back in the mid 70s Weight Watchers made the best frozen meals. It was according to their program so you got a huge portion of protein and 2 low carb vegetables, no cheap potatoes or rice. They had a Salisbury Steak that to this day I've never tasted anything like that, chopped steak, meatloaf, anything int that family that is as delicious. It had plenty of this mushroom gravy. SO good. They did have a few pasta dishes as if you fit them in right a carb like that was allowed a couple of times a week. This was long before the points plans. They made a stuffed with veal and cheese and spinach that was so good I once made several of them for a dinner party and everyone raved. I never told them it was frozen WW dinners.
I miss them.
These days none of them taste like real food. Funny, if you cook something from scratch and then freeze some of it it tastes just as good when defrosted and used. The commercial frozen dinners all taste like fake food.

Lean Cuisine has become so incredibly bad... every 3-4 years they do some kind of overhaul and make things worse and worse (aka cheaper and cheaper). It's virtually inedible at this point. Amy's is the main good brand left. Cedar Lane is a little better I think.

The blanket judgments on "all frozen meals are unhealthy" is stupid. AGAIN, you might want to take a look at AMY'S...very good quality products, produced locally (to me), they opened a restaurant that is very successful and whose drive-thru line rivals In-N-Out's drive-thru at any given time. They have the most tasty vegan burger...
I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, love meat, but their food is delicious.
And, no - i'm not fat; far from it in fact.

I just checked out David zinzenko's book on what to buy in the super market to eat healthy/lose weight and discovered Blake's chicken pot pie. It was sold out at my home city market but I'm on vacation and found it at Walmart and it wS good but only had 12 grams protein but around 370 calories as I recall. he said lean cuisine French bread pepperoni pizza was a solid choice. I like chile relleno at Trader Joe's and it has 20 grams protein for around 400 calories and not too much fat surprisingly.

Marie Calendar's pot pies are NOT 1000 calories. The large are somewhere around 800 and the small are about 450. If you bake them the small one instead of nuking it and have a side salad with some olive oil and lemon, you've got a very tasty, cheap and fairly healthy dinner.

R26, I have been gluten free exclusively for a long time.
First, Amy's does sell the cheese enchiladas in a family size. They are available in my area at Target, Kroger, Safeway and Walmart, about $8.50 a package.
Second, if you're willing to eat convenience foods, Velveeta is gluten-free, as are Rotel canned tomatoes and Pace Picante sauce and Hatch chili products. You can make your own dips with those items. Or you can make a dip by starting with a white sauce base with milk, cornstarch, and add cheese and other ingredients to make something you like.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | January 20, 2017 4:31 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 20, 2017 8:17 AM |
Fat whores and Girls, girls! The pot pie data is available online on Marie C.'s own website. Keeping with the spirit of DL, I chose Chicken.
You have to do a little math. Because Marie is addled on crack, her pies are packaged in oz but the nutritional info is listed in g. A small pie is 10 oz, or about 285 g (I rounded up). The nutritional info/portion is for 200 g. So, multiply by 285/200 or 1.425 to get the info for a full pie.
That means 612 calories, 36 g fat, 14 g sat fat, 1069 mg sodium, etc.
For the large pie, your multiplier is (454/200) 2.27. So, 976 cal, 57 g fat, 23 g sat fat, and 1700 mg sodium.
Don't forget to horf down a Pepperidge Farm chocolate cake for dessert!

Ugh....these fucking American problems with butter, cheese, potatoes, carbs etc.
The rest of the world manages to be slimmer and live longer without obsessing over this shit.
Instead of the palm oil and transfat garbage you all eat, stick to high quality full fat butter and good olive oil.

Amy's you definitely have to shop around. It's $1-2 cheaper at Target than the local grocery stores, which have them at $4.69 and 5.99. Their red label bean and cheese burritos are the thing I eat the most. And their cheese pizza. For the person wanting non-spicy, I'd recommend the Veggie Loaf meal. It's a slice of lentil loaf in a brown gravy with whipped potatoes and peas/corn. Midwestern tasty.
The Trader Joe's frozen Indian food is really good. (While I think the Amy's Indian food is absolutely disgusting.) Garlic naan and the Paneer Tikka Masala are delicious.

by Anonymous | reply 107 | January 21, 2017 3:08 PM |
I like most of Amy's canned products. However like all prepared food you have to watch the calories, carbs and sodium. I'm not a big fan of anybody's frozen food. But I keep some cans of Amy's stuff around. For example one can Amy's chili and a wheat tortilla seems reasonable. But you are looking at over 160 grams of carbs and over 2000 mg of sodium. Although if you switch to a corn tortilla - carbs and sodium drop significantly.

Americans won't quit until every food option is smothered in a mountain of melted cheese. It's the preferred way to eat anything here. I told a friend of mine trying to diet to limit cheese to one food item a day and don't make other changes just yet, and he lost weight quickly.

Yeah, all this cheese consumption is so gross and bad for you
by Anonymous | reply 119 | January 23, 2017 4:28 PM |
The problem with Lean Cuisine, like most diet frozen food, is that carbs and sodium are out of line for the number of calories. For example if you are on a 1500 calories a day diet in order to lose weight if you extrapolate this Lean Cuisine meal to your entire daily intake that would mean 205 grams of carbs a day. Way out of line for a health diet let alone one to lose weight. Same is true with the sodium.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | January 23, 2017 4:30 PM |
Yeah, Lean Cuisine has way too many carbs - even though there are 50 different meals, all are carb-heavy. There was an Atkins and South Beach low carb brand out for a while, but it was gross. The meat was impossible to chew, it smelled bad, and it was expensive.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 23, 2017 4:33 PM |
I'm sure it's best not to know but my curiosity is winning out--how is it possible for Banquet to sell their meat pies and small dinner entrees for $1?

by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 23, 2017 4:48 PM |

[quote] Wonder why LeMenu went away?
They were too expensive to make. Other manufacturers jumped into the microwaveable frozen food market (which was fairly new at the time) using much cheaper foods and Le Menu got priced out.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | January 23, 2017 8:01 PM |
After all this LeMenu talk, I found a thread somewhere on the internets about LeMenu, and a guy who said he had been the LeMenu brand manager piped up. He said that they were retail priced at about $5.59, which was a ton of $$$ in the 1980s for a frozen meal. They had a solid but not huge niche in what was then not a real big market, and no competition. Apparently the quality was good (I never ate one). Then the microwave-meal competitors started up with much cheaper food and packaging. LeMenu tried to compete but couldn't - customers were angry at the lower quality food and packaging, sales dropped, and Swanson killed the brand.
And 25 years later, there still isn't really a replacement for LeMenu in the US market, that is to say, good quality frozen food made with at least average quality ingredients. Nobody wants to make an affordable meat-based frozen entree. The Brits are right - everything is carbs and cheese.
I'm having a food flashback from that time (early '90s). A friend and I would get stoned and eat at Taco Bell. We thought it was amusing to challenge each other to eat $5 of Taco Bell food. That was a lot of TB. So a frozen dinner that cost even more than that would have seemed bourgeois-luxe to the point of being silly.

Celentano Eggplant Parmigiana - tastes very good, though only have half and save the rest in the refrigerator to nuke for the next day. Have it with some veggies and/or some pasta and marinara on the side.

Why is there so much sodium? With refrigeration and modern preservatives, why resort to medieval means to hide the taste or extend the shelf life? Can't people just add salt at home if it's not salty enough for them? No tiny little entree should have 25-30% of daily sodium limit.

Trader Joe's tend to be lower sodium. One of the many reasons they are the best for this stuff.

UH, some of us don’t have the time, money, skills, energy, kitchen equipment, etc. to whip up something tasty or go out to a restaurant. Frozen meals are very convenient and if you choose wisely, just as healthy as homemade food. The people deriding them must snack on fatty salty things all day...News flash: 25% of your salt for the day is not much if you have cereal, OJ and an egg for breakfast and a peanut butter sandwich, milk and baby carrots for lunch. You have to watch your numbers regardless of where the food is coming from.

Thanks to you bitches for mentioning Marie Callender’s chicken pot pies. I was in the store and saw it - so I decided to try it. God damn! That was so friggin good. Like crack. After one, I’m addicted. I couldn’t bring myself to look at the ingredients or calories. I feel so ashamed. But I can’t wait for the next one,

It's been a decade since I've had them, but Marie Callender's everything was quite tasty and filling. Yes, you have to kiss your food plan goodbye, but, going with the best-tasting theme, I'd say MC. They do a nifty thing with their sauces where you microwave the packet on top of your meal, so you get decent gravy on your chicken-fried steak. The pot pies are delicious, too.

I'm PISSED that EVOL stopped making their tandoori chicken. It was low cal, low fat and good.
I like Blake's shepherd's pie, Trader Joe Pizza Margherita, various Indian foods that are all made by the same company and sold to Amy's, Trader Joe & supermarket brands.
I used to like Lean Cuisine tortilla crusted fish but it seems to have been discontinued in favor of even more fake Asian food.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | February 9, 2019 5:47 AM |
Part of LeMenu's branding success came from including the microwavable plate at a time when microwave ovens were fairly new and many dishes weren't compatible with those older microwave ovens.
My idea is to create a new brand called LeCaftan - every meal will include a large comfy Caftan - you know just to air out your private parts while you watch that all that cheap goop spin around in your microwave oven.

About once every five years I buy a chicken pot pie, but they're always disappointing. That's the only frozen-dinner I've ever tried. I just cook a regular decent meal, it's not hard.

Trader Joe's jackfruit curry and it's thai eggplant are truly yummy!!! Cheap and so good! I add peanuts to mine, for added protein as I am vegetarian, and I serve the thai eggplant over rice or pasta. Don't be afraid to add a few ingredients to your meal to take it over the top! Much faster and cheaper and tastier than takeout!!

Lean Cuisine's Moroccan beef is very good. Butternut ravioli with veggies is tasty with added frozen peas. Both have been $1.69 each at Smith's (Kroeger.) Their Asian entrees are way too sweet. Frozen dinners are reserved for when I'm sick and therefore can't cook.

I just tried a "Michael Angelo's" frozen lasagna (way better than Stouffers that doesn't get the sauce right). I added some mozzarella cheese on top the last minute of cooking (microwaved) and it was pretty darn good. Had a nice piece of homemade bread (mom's she gave me) with butter on the side.

Saffron Road and Amy's are my favorites. For gluten-free Chinese, I look for Feel Good. I'm not claiming it's the best frozen Chinese food, just that it's a good, gluten-free option. For "American" food, Nighthawk or Boston Market. I now avoid regular Stouffer's and Marie Callender because they seem to be nothing but fat and salt. Lean Cuisine still has some decent options, e.g., the spicy Korean BBQ.

I love Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice frozen meals. Though I do like to cook, I also like to have these on hand. They're low calorie, low fat and low sodium, and many of them include a good portion of vegetables. Plus they make portion and calorie control effortless. They're almost always on sale at my local grocery store, like 4 for 10 deals or even better 5 for 10 deals. I would spend considerably more to buy all the ingredients to make these meals from scratch.
Healthy Choice Simply Cafe Steamers are great.
