There's apparently a new DVD with a zillion extras.
I bought the 2006 one and it's also got a zillion (terrific) extras and therefore worth every penny. Could't get the newest one where I live.
A lot of DVD extras are disappointing and thin - NOT the case here. They're fantastic.

Patty Duke was all pumped up to become a big film star with the release of "Valley Of The Dolls" and possibly even being elevated to Patricia Duke. Dolls was a mess and it shattered forever her ambition to become a bonafide big name actress. But she still worked consistently in television and did some good work.

Seems strange.

You know, it's funny. When I was about, I don't know, 7 years old I first became aware of Patty Duke. I remember her hosting the New York portion of the MDA Telethon with John Astin for several years running. Something attracted me to her. There was a warmth, a tone of voice, a look. I can't even put my finger on it. Soon after I remember loving when I would see her on Match Game, or Tattletales, and I remember being home sick from school one day and being enthralled by her in The Swarm, and later as Anne Sullivan in the TV remake of Miracle Worker (still haven't seen the original)..
When I saw the out sized outpouring here when she died it made sense to me. We all felt that attraction. I felt it years and years before I ever saw Valley of the Dolls, which I didn't see till I was in the 20s. Maybe it was we knew instinctively she was a survivor from those horrible managers who abused her, and we related.

We remember people who died, and then life has a strange way of moving on and the person is forgotten. Patty Duke isn't one of them. She is one who will long be remembered and missed. There wasn't anybody like Patty Duke. Great actress. Big loss.
Joan Rivers was another who made her mark and hasn't been forgotten. Same with Judy Garland, who lives on too and can't be replaced--even more so than Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis and Frank Sinatra.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 8, 2017 4:37 AM |
Duke might not have had the film career that might have been expected of her, she managed to win Emmys for her work in MY SWEET CHARLIE, as Anne Sullivan in the MIRACLE WORKER, for THE WOMEN'S ROOM and my favorite as Bernadette in CAPTAINS & THE KINGS.
As for VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, Duke made her peace with Neely O'Hara. On location shoots for television movies, she would invite the entire cast and crew in to watch VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and would answer everyone's questions. She even paid for the pizza.
I will admit that I would like to have seen Duke play Neely when she (Duke) was physically and mentally healthy
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 8, 2017 4:54 AM |
Sally Field swept in and took over Patty Duke's movie career. Think about it. I'm not saying Sally wasn't great, but you could easily imagine Patty in almost all of Field's film roles, including Norma Rae and Steel Magnolias. I bet Duke would have been just as good. Just a different interpretation.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 8, 2017 4:58 AM |
Correction: I should have written "just as great!"

by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 8, 2017 4:59 AM |
Patty Duke should have played the role of Violet, the mother in August: Osage County. Patty would have been perfect in the role, and would have been much more suited than Meryl Streep. Yes, Meryl is a great actress, but the role of Violet was not for her. It belonged to Patty, who certainly could have played the role on Broadway.

R215 and R216 it was sepsis that resulted from a burst intestine. She had been sick with stomach problems for about a year. I don't think it was cancer, because I think they would have said so. From the old SUMMER STOCK MEMORIES thread in the archives:
************************** I sometimes acted as a baby sitter. For adults and for children. When John Astin and Patty Duke Astin travelled around with their production of MY FAT FRIEND, they brought their combined families with them, five kids plus a nanny. It was difficult find a place to take them out to eat. They both were very popular from their TV and movie careers, and they insisted on bring the kids with them, so the restaurant had to appeal to the kidsโ tastes as well. In the town of Bourne, there was very nice casual restaurant located near a local yacht club. It was the kind of place where you sailed in from Nantucket, had lunch with your other sailing buddies, and then headed out for an afternoon trip to Marthaโs Vineyard. I had reserved a table for the family, and when we arrived, despite my request fro a quiet corner, they had placed us in the center of the room.
Mr. Astin sat at the head of the table. Patty sat in the middle of one side of the table, next to her two smallest children (Sean and Mackenzie) and the nanny. I sat on the other side of the table, with the older kids. I had forgotten how demanding and loud kids could be, and the Astin family was no exception. They were a handful. Of course, other patrons began to notice John Astin (heโs very recognizable) and I could hear the whispers and see the heads turn. Now Patty was another matter. She was very tiny, and without makeup looked very young, and she was hidden among the kids.
I was annoyed when some guy came over during the middle of the meal, and introduced himself to Mr. Astin. He blustered about how his family loved them, and commented on how nice it was to see the Astins out as a family having their lunch. Mr. Astin smile amicably and said nothing. Then the guy said โIโm really disappointed that your wifeโs not here. We loved her in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and in THE MIRACLE WORKER.โ
Patty was sitting right across from me, her head down, and all the kids participated in this charade with glee. Mr. Astin said โThank you very much. Iโll be sure to pass on your kind compliments to her.โ He the turned to Patty and said โAnna, eat your vegetables!โ We all burst out laughing.

She was indirectly responsible for Sharon Tate s death. Sharon and Roman Polanski were renting Patty s house. Patty Duke was splitting from her husband. She needed to sell the house for the community property settlement. Sharon wanted to buy it but Roman Polanski and Patty s ex husband couldnt come to terms on price. Roman was at that particular moment cash poor, which impacted the negotiations ,So Sharon had to vacate and find something fast, especially as just at that time she discovered that she was pregnant. They moved about 6 blocks away to cielo drive and the rest is as they say history.

A timely bump. I spent the weekend in Palm Springs where I got chatting to the bartender about the history of the bar/celebrities who frequented. Long story short he had me and my boyfriend howling with laughter as he described the decades long feud between Patti Duke and Suzanne Pleshette. Well, it was more that Suzanne held a hell of a grudge really. But this guy acted it all out doing voices and everything. Hysterical.

She was great in the "Miracle Worker"... and I enjoyed her TV show (not shown anymore on anttv.. ugh). I watched a little known movie, "Me, Natalie", filmed in the late 60s. I saw an interview with Suzanne Pleshette (you can find it on YouTube) in which she talks about the terrible time she had replacing Anne Bancroft during the Broadway run of "The Miracle Worker" while Patty was still in the show. She says Patty took an instant dislike to her (because she wasn't Anne Bancroft) and made their scenes together, especially the fight scenes, very difficult and literally painful for Suzanne. Fairly or unfairly, she makes Patty sound pretty awful in the interview.

R312 I know that interview, Patty was 13 or 14 and Bancroft was like a second mother to her. Patty was definitely at first not a fan of Suzanne Pleshette, though I think later things settle down. But Suzanne to keep that alive all lthose years later, seems a little strange.

I saw Patty Duke as Phyllis in a Los Angeles production of "Follies". Lauren Bacall, Bea Arthur and Elaine Stritch sounded like Julie Andrews, Sally Anne Howes and Florence Henderson singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" compared to her screeching "Could I Leave You?" The only really interesting thing about this Sunday matinee was seeing all the people that I knew from West Hollywood there and turning to my friend and saying, "Wow, I bet the Abbey is empty!"

Sometimes in the middle of the day out of nowhere, Patty shrieking, 'WITH THAT LITTLE WHORE!' from the scene where she catches Ted C in the pool with another woman in VOTD, just pops into my head. Her delivery is so over the top it's absolutely iconic.
