Kansas is pretty ass backwards, fundie fucking retards too.

Well, there needs to be 10 more additional options, but the DL poll settings only allow for a maximum of 10...

Grew up in Missouri, r1, and had to laugh at your idiotic comment. KS is rotten but so is MO, which has been hugely pro-Klan for a century. Vile people. At least KS, like TX, has pockets of blue. MO Dems are Southern Dems, ie DINOs.

r20 NJ is one of the wealthiest states in the country asshole. Northern NJ is full of industry, universities, theaters, and culture, and within close proximity to New York. Southern NJ is a jewel: the beaches have been rated some of the best on the Eastern Seaboard and with the Pine Barrens and farmland left unspoiled, it's still pastoral. It's also close to Philly which provides even more economic opportunities for its residents.
I can only imagine the shithole you live in. You're obviously a basement dweller or trailer trash whose idea of culture is a night with a six pack of Miller Lite and cruising on Grindr for a date.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 14, 2016 1:55 PM |
LOL, R17. Without California, you would not even be on 'dem internets! Or, at least it would be a much more crude, basic experience!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 14, 2016 2:01 PM |
Florida offers tremendous entertainment value compared with the shitholes on the list. If we look at any redeeming feature:
OK - absolutely none WV - scenery and the Greenbriar resort IN - absolutely none ID - scenery MS - Faulkner and black music AL - more black music GA - dirty southern boys AR - gay enclaves TN - BBQ, blues, Dolly Parton ND - Badlands
So it's down to OK and IN.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 14, 2016 2:07 PM |
Badlands are in South Dakota. SD is the scenic Dakota. North Dakota has nothing to offer, not even in terms of scenery.. except that damn pipeline, I guess.
It's a state that nobody would want to visit.

OK, nevermind, R26, ND does have Theodore Roosevelt National Park, its one saving grace. Yay for ND?

North Dakota badlands in western North Dakota , breathtaking - part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park also the Pembina Gorge in northeastern North Dakota are but two reasons to visit the state.

Oklahoma is a shithole extraordinaire. No scenery to look at, the weather sucks matter what time of the year, oven dry high heat in the summer, ice storms in the winter. And don't get me started on that horrible red clay dirt everywhere that stains everything it touches like the blood of the damned. The inbred numbnuts that sisterfuck their way through life in Oklahoma are a waste of oxygen. The only thing they're good for is making all the other red states look good.

I was raised in New Jersey. My parents had college degrees as did almost everyone they knew. Sure, there are some lower class folks, but Snooki and The Sopranos are exaggerated stereotypes. One thing I miss about it is that people in line ahead of you would often say "One or two items, you can go ahead of me." I don't believe that has ever happened here in Seattle.
I've been to 44 states so far, with Montana striking me as Most Boring. I would say Texans top my Most Obnoxious list.

Alabama has some great civil rights museums and the MLK church. My wife and I did a four month road trip from Oregon down through California then east into southern FL then North to Michigan then west on I-90/I-84 back to Oregon. I really enjoyed Montgomery, AL. Missouri is red, Kansas City and St. Louis are only 2 major cities in a huge state with vast amounts of rural farmland and agriculture redness.
But Kansas is a beast of different stripes. So asinine and ass backwards. They actually reelected their moron fundie Governor who has run their boring box-shaped state right off a fucking cliff. An economic experiment from hell, and they remain ensconced behind Gov. Brownback who is trying to jump his sinking ship with a hoped for ticket to Trump's Washington. LOFL. R59 is right and all of the people who buy into the stereotypes of southern and flyover states portrayed by the media aren't very smart. The smugness of the coastal areas and New England is disappointing. Starting threads like this, OP, helps us become more divided, which is the last thing the US needs, especially now. Everybody in a red state is not Republican.

[quote]. Every state adds to the strength of the United States.
This is not true, at least on an economic basis. Some states are the givers, some states are the takers.
Amusingly enough most of the states being talked about (Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Kansas) are the worst takers, their economies are weak so they are reliant on the Federal government (ie money from other states).
by Anonymous | reply 82 | December 15, 2016 3:31 AM |

I used to travel for work, and over the years I ended up in a lot of places. But, the only one on this particular list is Arkansas. I was Bentonville (Wal Mart HQ) so that town is potentially an exception to what that entire state might be like (though it was 63% Trump...so maybe not). It was still pretty dingy and dull there, but it wasn't a bad place to work because the whole town caters to business travelers (lots of fast food, easy to get everywhere, etc.). The life goal of everyone I met there was to get out of Bentonville. So there's one answer.
The worst two were a small town in South Dakota and in Baton Rouge, LA. South Dakota was totally empty. The only food we had was McDonalds or Burger King. There was one dingy hotel. I don't even know where the employees lived - nothing was around. In Baton Rouge, The weather was incredibly hot, our office was disgusting (80 degrees + snake warnings on every door), the food was bad no matter where you went, and it was just a miserable place to be.
The funny thing about all of the above is that the people were always friendly (to my face) - more so than clients in cities like NY or Boston. I think it is a cultural thing to be nice to people and then talk shit about them privately. There were a number of examples of this, actually now that I think about it. In Boston & NYC, they just yelled at us directly when they didn't like something. The Southern states' employees were more conniving (or perhaps more hierarchical) and had their complaints go up their food chain and to the top of our leadership - thus making us look (personally) worse than if they just told us their problems to our face.

I've lived in Kansas for quite a while, lived in a few other states, and visited about 20 more. Kansas is a really good contender for worst state, but monetarily it is somewhat worthwhile to the U.S. because of crops, cattle and oil.
Oklahoma was just dire -- even more assholes than Kansas, no oases of blue, and fewer resources of any kind. Its worthlessness edges Kansas out of the top spot.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 15, 2016 10:37 AM |
[quote]I was the first to mention Kansas and have the displeasure of witnessing their self destructive implosion from right across the border.
Kansas fought hard to be admitted into the Union as a free state, while Missourians came over the border and massacred citizens on a regular basis, hoping to bully Kansas into being a slave state, which would help all the slave owners in Missouri. You may not have heard of the Marais des Cygnes Massacre or the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, but you should have heard of John Brown at least, and the burning of Lawrence.
It's been a century and a half but Kansas still has pockets of liberals in the same places it did back then. Missouri, as I know from growing up there, is still a slave state at heart. When I was a kid in the 1970s in Southern Missouri, the Klan was a prominent presence. When U of M students said they thought Klan members were on campus, I figured they might just be right -- it's not like the Klan is losing membership nowadays.
Kansas right now is troubling, but it's not as much from the citizens as it is from the Republicans using Kansas as a testing ground for all sorts of shitty stuff, and Republicans are complaining almost as much as Democrats nowadays.

R112 I also wondered why OP's list is so suspiciously anti-Southern. Georgia is hugely culturally influential. Tennessee is a cornerstone of America's musical heritage. Mississippi has produced some of America's greatest authors.
Here are some useless Yankee states that OP omitted:
Delaware
Wyoming
Utah
Idaho
Nebraska
by Anonymous | reply 115 | December 19, 2016 2:24 PM |
I think the results would change if you had to have actually spent some time in a state you're panning, none of this pass-through shit.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | December 19, 2016 2:31 PM |
Delaware is where a lot of companies incorporate and Dover is a pretty nice town, Brown University is there and the state is blue. Parts of Wyoming and Idaho are beautiful. Utah has some amazing national parks. I'll give you Nebraska, but the other states are far removed from this list.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | December 19, 2016 2:46 PM |
R115 you missed Pennsylvania. I'm from Philadelphia and except for a few areas PA is horrible. Remember we graced this country with lil' Ricky Santorum.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | December 19, 2016 2:48 PM |
Re-read the OP, PA does not belong on the list. Again it has scenic beauty, it has some great large cities and it has a lot of history. Contrast that to say, OK. Not even close.
We could nit pick every state, but that isn't what the OP writes about. There really are a handful of states that have nothing to offer.

OK, let me do this again but a little slower for R119, R120, and R121. First, I responded to R115, not the OP. Furthermore, as this thread has pointed out each state has SOME quality that can be viewed as redeeming. Asshole at R120 I'm assuming you and your friend at R121 are Pennsylvanians who get a little touchy when the state gets the criticism it deserves. Ben Franklin (actually from Boston) and the Continental Congress (the one that gave us our glorious Constitution took place in New York) are nice enough but any historic person or event that happens to pass through doesn't give a state cache in 2016. Finally R121, I don't disagree with you, Philly is horrid. Now take that water glass and cram it up your ass.

In order to win this poll, the state must offer nothing to the culture of the country. Although they might be politically useless, if they have some semblance of culture, they should not be considered.

Because one of the worst punishments someone could conceive is forcing someone to live in Mississippi? It's a fucking hellhole.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | December 19, 2016 11:54 PM |
Backwards has to be a poor red state, because voting GOP is undeniably voting against your state's best interests - so I'll pick Mississippi. It tops the chart on almost every negative measure, and consistently votes for people who will make it worse.
Shitty? Well that's subjective - shitty weather, shitty politics, shitty culture, shitty environment? I agree that there's beauty in every state. MS or AL have incredibly shitty politics, but there's interesting culture. I like bluegrass so I'll give the Appalachian states a pass. I'd opt for Oklahoma or Kansas with shitty politics, tornadoes and not a lot of cultural clout.
Useless? Well lots of states red and blue probably aren't all that useful. If Vermont moved to Canada the US wouldn't really miss it. Nevada? You can build casinos anywhere. Then again, those states are fairly self sufficient. Southern red states suck at the federal teat , but mainly because they are so poor and don't vote for people who could improve things - so there's potential for those states to be more useful than they are. I'll pick Louisiana - already costs the federal government a lot, and as it continues to sink it's only going to cost more.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | December 20, 2016 12:00 AM |
I'm going to go with Oklahoma--crap weather (hurricane alley),, culturally bland, red as all get-out. Best known for the Oklahoma City bombing, a musical written elsewhere and some gymnasts. Mississippi is a pit, but culturally a little more interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | December 20, 2016 12:19 AM |
Oklahoma has some beautiful scenery and lots of open land. There are tornadoes and it's windy a lot. There's a lot of churches. There's a Native American culture behind a lot of the state (and unfortunately a bunch of casinos now, thanks Republicans!). The streets are kind of shitty. There's a state income tax. OKC has put a lot of effort into revitalising the downtown area and it's become a pretty nice spot. There's some beautiful Art Deco buildings, lots of old Victorians, and the people are generally friendly. Cowboys too. There's a lot of wind farm investment. It has its plusses and minuses, the political situation is dire and the governor is a horrible right wing cunt. They got rid of state car inspection stickers, I have no idea why. The majority of the population is older/geriatric, hopefully once they die off the state will recover more and not be quite so Republican.

....Is it the 1800s? People are not stuck in their hometown dear, many people with college degrees and higher degrees move in search of greater job opportunities and cultural amenities.
And it is a simple reality that if you like progressive values and modern cultural amenities, some states have that, some not so much. For gay men especially trying to act like it is the same being a gay man in any state is foolish.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | December 21, 2016 12:25 PM |

Yes, I literally specified college educated in my post.
But you are proving my point. Some areas have serious issues with brain-drain, most of the talented people leave in search of better opportunities. So what is left behind are areas of uneducated people who have very provincial viewpoints.
Where as some places are hotspots for talented people, so you tend to be surrounded by more educated people with less conservative values.
Shocker, the former places seem like hell on earth if you are a more "cosmopolitan-type" of person. Or a gay person at all since such places are still a little stuck in the past when it comes to gay people.
You are basically admitting my point, but getting upset when we point out such differences exist.

I'm from Kentucky. Louisville and Lexington are nice places with a decent amount of culture, restaurants, sports and scenery. If you drive between the two, you will see beautiful horse farms. Everywhere else in KY sucks though. Especially southern KY near Tennessee.
Indiana is way worse though. That state is full of poverty, drugs, crime and is just totally yuck.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | December 21, 2016 5:58 PM |
Believe it or not, rural areas have their positives just like urban areas have theirs. True many of the people in rural areas are provincial and hard headed and non progressive. They like things the way they were, not they way they could be. And in most places that works. These areas provide a place for city dwellers to get away to unwind. Living in a big city is very stressful, no matter what your socioeconomic situation is. If I didn't have a place in the middle of nowhere to retreat to for a few months a year I'd go crazy. I'm more than happy to engage with country bumpkins and keep my progressive ideas and attitudes to myself while I'm there. And besides, some of those rubes turn out to be incredibly wise and I've learned a lot from them.

My vote was for Mississippi based on an experience I had in the 1990's....I work in the music biz and was on tour and we were doing a show in Biloxi at the Gulf Coast Coliseum.....during the day I walked down the beach to a Burger King to get some junk food (passed by the Jefferson Davis House (Beauvoir) on the way which should have been my clue to what I was about to experience.....anyway, I get to Burger King and go to the counter and order my lunch.....I notice a 20 something white girl in line behind me........so I get my food and go sit down at a table and start eating.....a minute later, the girl who was in line comes up to me and says she heard me order and from accent knew I wasn't a local and she asked if she could sit with me........not knowing that she was about to start crying at my table, I said sure.......and then she begins to tell me that she is in Biloxi with her husband who is in the military and is doing his medical residency on the military base........she said that she had grown up in Washington DC (as did her husband) and that this was their first time in the south......her family had worked inside the beltway. She went on to tell me that she had not been brought up a racist and that she didn't think she was going to make it through her husband's residency in Biloxi..she said that the racism was worse than anything she had ever seen on TV or heard about in school and was sobbing at my table....she couldn't handle the way blacks were treated in Biloxi ...I just listened........and when it came time for me to go, I gave her a hug and wished her well and told her she would get through the next six months.........I never looked at Mississippi the same after that experience....and when Katrina hit Biloxi, my one hope was that Beauvoir would have been washed out to sea.............I have been back to Biloxi with a few times over the years and still cringe at the sight of Beauvoir and the memories from lunch at Burger King........

I love this topic, and I think the criteria (beauty, culture, politics) are correct. Every time there's a thread like this, I give the same answer(s), based on extensive travel in the U.S. (every state). Oklahoma, Indiana and Alabama are worthless. Any good feature they have is surpassed by other states that do the same things better. Oklahoma might be the worst of them, especially now that there are millions of fracking induced mini-earthquakes to complement the tornadoes. And that red soil makes it hard to build basements to hide from the twisters. But I would probably want a house without a basement if I lived there, so I could die.

Tennessee obviously has the beautiful Smoky mountains, Dolly's birthplace Sevierville and some of the best roads I've driven on. They must spend a ton on infrastructure.
Georgia has Atlanta , CNN, old towns like Savannah, Chattanooga if you like mountains, and pecan and peanut brittle.
Idaho--well where would we be without those potatoes and the farming for food.
North Dakota has probably got some good scenery and landmarks (have never been there) and lots of Native American culture I assume.
West Virginia has waterfalls, caves, rivers and mountain scenery
The last three are runner ups for the worse place --Oklahoma, Alabama & Arkansas. They just seems to be places where bigotry lives, breathes and multiplies.
