Who, here, has had these exotic, spiky, tropical fruits of Asia?
Durian above, jackfruit below.
What do they taste like? Saw one at the store, contemplating buying one but they are pricey!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 24, 2016 7:50 PM |
I've tried them. Little or no flavor and costly in the Northeast.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 24, 2016 7:51 PM |
They look like they could kill someone if they fell from a tree and landed on your head.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 24, 2016 8:31 PM |
Jackfruit is lovely and easy to like. The closest thing I can say it tastes like is... mango? But it's meatier. I'm lucky enough to live near a Vietnamese supermarket that sells the fruit itself, packaged and cut up already.
Durian is an entirely different beast.... it's definitely an acquired taste. The smell, most people agree, is awful! I've heard people compare the smell to, well, Cheryl's problem.... and the taste is creamy, with hints of garlic and chives. It's very strange!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 24, 2016 8:49 PM |
Oh goody. A fruit that stinks like Cheryl's pussy. I'm sure all of the gays here will be all over that!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 24, 2016 10:48 PM |
I've tried both, and, perhaps, they were bad examples, or underripe. I didn't think either had much flavor at all.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 24, 2016 10:59 PM |
I love durian! Not sure I've ever had jackfruit.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 24, 2016 11:03 PM |
Jackfruit is pretty mild and inoffensive and (oddly enough) sometimes used as a vegan meat substitute.
Durian is...let's just say the odor can fill a room. The only way I can think of to describe the taste is a bizarre mix of custard and onion. There are actually signs in Singapore telling people not to eat it on public transportation.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 25, 2016 12:27 AM |
Durian smells like garbage and has a taste that's a bit like rotten garlic, although it's surprisingly good as an ingredient in other things, including ice cream.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 25, 2016 12:38 AM |
First time I had durian was in ice cream, so no smell involved.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 25, 2016 1:18 AM |
Durians especially the good varieties are very expensive.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 25, 2016 2:28 AM |
Durian is actually OK if you get part the smell. It has a set custardy texture and flavour. Strangely some people find it a pleasant smell whereas to others its stnks or anything from turps to dung. It smells on the bad end of the spectrum to me and I only forced myself to try it out of curiosity. Jackfruit on tye otherhand smells and tastes like a comination of tropical fruits (mango, pineapple, banana) and is very pleasant.

I had a durian drink at a Polynesian restaurant and it tasted like cat pee smells.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 25, 2016 3:21 AM |
Thump a melon
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 27, 2016 1:51 AM |
Not to change the subject, but what's the name of the fruit that is white inside and has a lot of little black seeds (like a Kiwi)?

Diesel Washington's latest twink.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 30, 2016 7:36 PM |
Dragonfruit? ^^^ It looks more exotic than it tastes (bland)
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 30, 2016 7:37 PM |
Jackfruit is quite delicious. Sweet, but not cloying. I don't have a refined palate, so I'm not good for a more detailed description.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 30, 2016 8:26 PM |
R19 Yeah, that's it -- thank you. I had it in a fruit bowl at a restaurant and couldn't remember what it was. (And, yes, it was bland.)
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 30, 2016 8:37 PM |
Mango-y is the closest I would describe jackfruit's taste to.. but it's meatier.
Vegetarians use it as a meat substitute sometimes, such as this one for jackfruit carnitas
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 30, 2016 8:38 PM |
Soursap rules! It even prevents/cures cancer [supposedly] In Hawaii it's called "sasalapa" but that's actually a Samoan word...go figure
Durian smells like a wet rank jockstrap but when you eat it it actually takes like a spicy, creamy, custard
Starfruit rocks, Mangosteen is meh, custard apple aka Atis is good. And yes for all it's exotic look, dragonfruit is kinda blah.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 30, 2016 10:19 PM |
Fresh Jackfruit is plasticky. It is much better cooked. Durian is disgusting. Star fruit is very crisp. Rambutan, everybody likes rambutan.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 30, 2016 11:15 PM |
Rambutans are like lychees. I bought a can of them years ago when I was making a recipe for curried rabbit. I had custard apple in India, but I understand it's common in South America as well.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 30, 2016 11:25 PM |
Durians smells like days old vomit. The taste is similar to the smell, but surprisingly just slightly nausea inducing. Kind of custardy, and is actually pretty good in ice cream. I was once on a day trip in Malaysia and we stopped to buy some Durian. One guy belched after eating some and the heated up smell was so intense that we had to pull over and air out the car.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 30, 2016 11:31 PM |
Jackfruit is better cooked in curries/stir-fries/soups etc.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 30, 2016 11:34 PM |
My ex and I were visiting friends in Greece a few years ago. We brought along as a sort of joke a package of durian wafers. Our host told us later that when he opened the package the dog ran out of the room.
I hate papaya, which tastes like vomit to me.

Jessica Chastain convinces Jimmy Kimmel to try the durian fruit:
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 1, 2016 5:50 AM |
R31 I agree completely - papaya tastes exactly like foul vomit!!! I thought I was the only one...
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 1, 2016 5:55 AM |
Nothing beats the cherimoya, bitches!
Refrigerated cold, ripened and eaten with a spoon!
It is the fruit of Gods.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 1, 2016 5:59 AM |
I've never figured out how to eat rambutan without getting some of the bark/husk off the seed
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 1, 2016 6:02 AM |
durian breath
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 6, 2016 2:30 AM |
I had never heard of Jessica Chastain before, but in that clip she is awesome!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 6, 2016 3:21 AM |
I've heard good things about jackfruit, but I have fructose malabsorption issues. I assume it's a melon and therefore high in fructose. Blah.
Avoid durian at all costs. It's an abortion. Seriously.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 6, 2016 5:29 AM |
Durian is dee-lish, you Philistine!

by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 6, 2016 6:04 AM |
Speaking of foul-smelling produce -- to me the absolute worst smell is when you have potatoes that have gone bad. Worse than diarrhea. Worse than durian. Worse than vomit. And it permeates your whole kitchen.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 6, 2016 6:05 AM |
R38 is Jimmy kimmel . Lol
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 6, 2016 6:07 AM |
At our asian market you can buy durian pastries and I love them! My family and partner find them completely disgusting. The smell makes my sister retch.
So i would definitely say they are an acquired taste.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 8, 2016 1:32 AM |
Durian tasted like sweaty socks to me.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 8, 2016 1:52 AM |
tastes like pussy

[quote]I had never heard of Jessica Chastain
She is much loved here at the Datalounge.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 8, 2016 4:17 AM |
Durian is like sweet garlic custard soaking in a dirty sock filled with rancid truffle oil.
Immature jackfruit -- sold canned in water or brine, or frozen --is stringy and it doesn't taste like much of anything. It takes on the taste of whatever it's cooked in/with, hence its use in vegan carne asada, pulled pork, and crab cakes. Fresh and ripe, it tastes exactly like Juicy Fruit gum.
Enjoy some durian porn...

R48 wtf was that video?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 8, 2016 6:13 AM |
Jackfruit is currently on sale in Southern California Asian markets
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 4, 2017 3:57 AM |
Ripe jackfruit is delicious but I can only eat s little of it. Too much makes me nauseous. It's cooked only when green and its bland and uninteresting.
Don't knock durian. Many dislike the smell but many are not offended by it. Like with armpit musk some love it some are turned off. I don't mind the smell though I don't like it. But I don't find it particularly tasty.
Rembutan. Ah, rembutan. (Not rambutan) Lovely fruit. Great to look at too. Southeast Asia has the most amazing fruit. Ladyboys are delicious too :)
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 4, 2017 4:41 AM |
Well if you think about it, walking into cheese shop is quite rank but bc people are used to and like eating the "smell" isn't so bad. Cheese smells like dirty feet to me.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 4, 2017 5:12 AM |
are they hard to cut into?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 4, 2017 6:47 AM |
R51 you're wrong. It's rambutan.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 4, 2017 6:49 AM |
I stand corrected. Thanks

One smells like unwashed ass and the other describes gays.

As a vegetarian I’ve really grown to liking Jackfruit as a protein substitute. Whole Foods sells shredded BBQ jackfruit and I use it to make pulled “pork” sandwiches. I’ve never had ripe, sweet jackfruit, but want to try it.
Dragonfruit is somewhat bland, but is a good additive to smoothies.
