The most romantic films ever made

What would you say are some of the most romantic films ever made? Or perhaps the most romantic film of all-time?

The Sting.

I imagine at the end when they're walking off together, they found a little B&B, fucked for days, then bought the place and lived out their days together. So romantic!

by Anonymousreply 21May 7, 2016 11:34 PM

Samuel West walking through the countryside in Howards End is high camp, beautifully shot, and achingly romantic.

[quote]Morocco (1930)...Anna Christie (1930)...Camille (1936)

I couldn't agree more with these titles. Garbo films are always romantic but Anna Christie and certainly Camille epitomizes the romance genre.

The ending to Morocco is one of the greatest ever filmed

I just watched Destry Rides Again, again. Dietrich didn't get a chance to fall in love with Jimmy Stewart but the ending is highly romantic. Dietrich wasn't exactly warm about romance but if someone wrote a good part she could break your heat.

Not necessarily a romantic film - but always thought the George and Mary romance in a Wonderful Life was strong and helped carry the movie.

The ending of Notorious was romantic -- and the leads had great chemistry, but Bergman and Grant's characters relationship was pretty dysfunctional, so probably not on the list.

Thanks for mentioning that about It's A Wonderful Life r52. The movie wouldn't be as great without the George and Mary "romance".

by Anonymousreply 69May 9, 2016 3:18 AM

Many of the ones mentioned I love, but for the most romantic, I would have to go with "Enchanted April". (The newer one with Michael Kitchen, Polly Walker, etc.)

When asked about his favorite love scene, Marcello Mastroianni said he loved it when Mickey kissed Minnie and all the little hearts appeared.

Sunset Boulevard is romantic but perverted romance.

Norma is cray but she falls in love with cray and her doomed love, pursuit, and seducing of Joe is the primary narrative. Max is a slave-lover of Norma, extremely perverted story there. Joe and Betty supposedly fall in love. I think Betty is in love but Joe is only somewhat, He's actually pretty torn between Betty and Norma and keeps hedging towards Norma, fatally. The New Years Eve party scene is wonderfully nuanced.

I think its a gay cult film because gays so often find themselves in twisted love stories.

"Remember the Night" with Barbara Stanwyck, and Fred MacMurray. Mitchell Leisen directing the Preston Sturges screenplay. Truly a perfect romance and both funny and moving.

by Anonymousreply 81May 12, 2016 9:01 PM

OK. Some of you are truly crazy. "Sunset Boulevard" is not a romantic film. Yes, I know that Norma Desmond loves Joe. Big fucking deal. That doesn't make it romantic. Joe never loves her. She kills him. Where's the fucking romance?

Where's the thread about deal breakers for a guy? Someone thinking "Sunset Boulevard" is romantic is a deal breaker. They think obsession/possession and love are the same thing. Run the fuck away before you end up face down in a fucking pool.

Portrait of Jennie from 1948 is one of the most romantic and strange films ever. The photography is amazing. Especially the storm at the end by a lighthouse and the screen turns to green

The slow build that precedes Ennis and Jack being reunited after 4 years.... and the bone crushing hug Ennis gives Jack followed by their attempts to devour each other with kisses. this may not be what the OP meant about a film being romantic, but "Brokeback Mountain" sure works for me.
