Any one out there remember the old thread about this? Did we ever find out if her family was prosecuted for neglect? Was her story ever told about how she ended up permanently fused to the couch? Any DL vets remember the old thread?

I'd also like to find out what happened to the McMath girl.

I remember it. The initial thread got a lot of replies and she was brought up several other times over the years. I don't see how she didn't die of an infection from using the couch as a toilet for who knows how long. Imagine how the bad the smell must've been there.

Someone on reddit claimed their mother was working at the ER that night she was brought in. Here's what they wrote:
[quote]I just told my mom about this headline and she says "Oh yeah, I was charge nurse that night" (in the ER). The EMTs requested a water hose, bottles of saline, and full scrubs/booties. (EDIT: Apparently it took about 4 hours to get her to the ER; they got the first call to get prepared at 8:30pm and she didn't arrive until some time after 2am).
They had to remove a wall of the house and use a chainsaw to cut out part of the couch that she was on. They also rented a truck from Home Depot and built handles onto the remaining part of the couch so they could lift her and the couch onto the flatbed truck. Doctors said she had 15lbs of feces under/between her legs, bottle caps stuck under her, etc. Her skin looked thick as an elephants skin with huge cracks in it from being so dried out. They literally had to hose her down before getting her off the truck so they didn't contaminate the entire ER area.
She started having respiratory issues while on the couch/truck still and had to be intubated. My mom had to break the couch to get her into a somewhat prone position, and the woman soon went into cardiac arrest. They couldn't use a defibrillator because the woman, the couch, and the entire truck were covered in water. The woman died while still on the truck.
After she died it became a crime scene, and they covered her (while still on the truck) in a tarp and drove her to the M.E. office. They later found out that someone (probably her family) was coming to her house to cash her welfare/disability checks. All that time she was left there while her family was aware of her condition. My mom said she wasn't sure how the investigation turned out. It was also the last night she was charge nurse at the ER, she didn't want to deal with anything like that ever again.

I believe the guy that was with her said he had tried several times to get her off the couch but she wouldn't move. I remember the old thread where people were saying she would fling her feces on the wall. Not sure why that was claimed or how anybody knew. This poor woman. May she be resting in peace.

I believe I read she had fell and hurt herself badly, and therefore was afraid to get up off the couch after that. It's unbelievable her family members didn't try and get her some kind of help. They were probably afraid she's get put in a nursing home and they'd lose her SS checks then.

There used to be more info out there about Gayle Grinds, but over the years it's disappeared.
I seem to recall some people were assuming she flung her feces (and they made racist comments, of course) but most people assumed it was just the expected kind of mess you'd get in this situation.

Something I always wondered is why they left so much of the couch intact when cutting it off. Surely they could have gotten rid of the frame at least and just left the upholstery attached to her.

You're right, R6. I found the article -- she broke her leg twice and apparently just stayed on the couch after recovering the second time, worried she'd break it again.

I hope that, one day, that legendary thread will be available for viewing once more.

Not to be insensitive but a great director and writer could make this an Oscar caliber movie. Telling the tragic tale of this woman who was apparently well liked and respected in her neighborhood.

The last I checked, R1, Jahi McMath's family is claiming she is doing well and her skin is "flawless."

At least a documentary.

Another article, I guess its too long because it won't allow to post after I copy and pasted it.

R12, really? I had read that a doctor testified that her insides were beginning to liquefy and ooze out of her ears.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 14, 2016 12:01 PM |
Here's her brother that was mentioned in some of the articles.

Major virus alert at that link, R16. My antivirus went off like a car alarm. Here's a link right to the image, which hopefully works.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 14, 2016 12:17 PM |
Hmm. I didn't get a virus alert. Sorry if there was one on there. Her adopted son Marcus Grinds has been arrested several times too.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 14, 2016 12:26 PM |
Pretty sure this is her sister mentioned in the articles.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 14, 2016 12:27 PM |
And this I believe is her adopted daughter which was mentioned in one of the articles.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 14, 2016 12:28 PM |
And her adopted son is gay.

If someone made a documentary about Mr. Hands, they sure as hell could make one about this case. It's fascinating.

I'm on my way to meet a similar fate if I don't get off my ass, let me tell you.

"r1 licks Gayle Grinds's walls" is one of my favorite DL insults of all-time!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 14, 2016 2:13 PM |
Apparently they based this episode of Nip/Tuck on her.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 14, 2016 2:27 PM |
That show was vile.

The Gayle Grinds story brought me to DL. I clicked a link from somewhere I don't recall and I've been here ever since.

Will they do a Lifetime movie? I'm available!

I came for the fusion and stayed for the embedded bottle caps.
