The '90s: greatest tabloid decade ever?

Were the '90s just a particularly crazy time or were we just saturated with these kinds of stories because Hard Copy, A Current Affair, and Inside Edition wouldn't let go of them? Would we have reality TV and the Kardashians today if not for these stories? Off the top of my head, I can think of:

The OJ trial

the Menendez brothers

Amy Fisher

Lorena Bobbitt

Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, and Gennifer Flowers

Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan

Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill

Charles and Di's divorce

Heidi Fleiss

What else am I forgetting?

Diana's death

Julia Roberts, Keifer Sutherland and Jason Patric

Michael Jackson's molestation allegations

Jon Benet Ramsey

My mom loved it. Right after she retired, the Anita Hill thing was on, then she became obsessed with the OJ trial. I wish she'd lived to see the new miniseries.

The gossip had yet to be manipulated and controlled as much as it is now. I remember when Diana died, newscasters having to explain what papparazzis were

by Anonymousreply 11February 1, 2016 6:08 PM

In the music industry, the deaths of:

Freddy Mercury

Kurt Cobain

Selena

Tupac Shakur

The Notorious B.I.G.

by Anonymousreply 12February 1, 2016 6:08 PM

The death of MOTHER THERESA OF CALCUTTA

by Anonymousreply 13February 1, 2016 6:10 PM

Totally, R12. I remember Cobain and Tupac v Biggie the most. Along with OJ and the LA Riots.

Hugh Grant getting caught with the hooker Divine Brown was huge in the summer of '95, especially since it happened two weeks before his rom-com Nine Months was released. He had to attend the premiere and then the talk show circuit to promote it, but all everyone wanted to talk about was 'the incident.' I remember when he went on Jay Leno drew big ratings and Leno outright asked him "What the hell were you thinking?!" Brown make a couple million from selling her side of the story.

.

by Anonymousreply 15February 1, 2016 6:17 PM

R14 Selena was huge, too, especially since Latino celebrities had not been given much coverage before. And suddenly there was this young singer most Americans had never heard of, but the case occupied a lot of air time. It made people realize that the booming Hispanic market was a force to be reckoned with. People magazine started People en Espanol as a direct result to how well the issue which featured her death coverage sold out and later a commemorative issue also sold out. Selena was pretty much in the public eye all 1995 because her English album DREAMING OF YOU was released in July (4 months after her death) which became biggest-selling debut, and her murder trial (thought not as huge as OJ) still got a lot of coverage.

Jackie Kennedy's death and, then later in the decade, her son's death with the two deaths linked because who knew if (a) he'd have married Carolyn if Jackie had been alive and (b) if he would have been flying at all if Jackie had been alive.

by Anonymousreply 17February 1, 2016 6:27 PM

Drew Barrymore's addictions issues in the early 90s made the tabloid covers quite a bit.

by Anonymousreply 18February 1, 2016 6:31 PM

Didn't one of the tabloids run morgue pictures of Selena's body?

by Anonymousreply 19February 1, 2016 7:11 PM

R19 yes!

Shanda Sharer's lesbian-infused murder is horrific. A couple of those bitches are already out. The other two will be out in a few years. What a complete travesty of justice considering how they tortured the poor girl.

River Phoenix's death; a lot of folks were shocked that he was a druggie

A sort-of semi-scandal was the director of the Sharon Stone film SLIVER leaving his pregnant wife for the actress. Stone's career-trajectory sputtered as a result, and never recovered.

by Anonymousreply 25February 1, 2016 9:04 PM

The Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan scandal is the most intriguing piece of marketing ever. CBS crossed all sorts of ethical lines, bastardizing both skaters in the process, and achieved exactly what they set out to: the highest rated Olympics ever.

CBS is ancient Sanskrit for Whore. $5 Whore.

In the UK:

Blur Vs Oasis battle for the no.1 spot

Tony Blair winning a landslide victory in the 1997 elections and ending nearly 18 years of Tory rule

The apocalyptic coverage of Ecstasy "The Love Drug" and the moral panic that ensued because of Leah Betts.

Courtney Love punching Kathleen Hannah in the face at Lollapalooza and responding "Bitch can't even read" when Kathleen challenged her to a public debate about feminism after.

The Jordash Trial on Brookside and the first lesbian kiss broadcast on a prime time soap during that storyline and the ridiculous scandal it caused. Will always love Anna Friel.

Fred and Rose West. The horror. Cue endless jokes about dandruff and the "head and shoulders" in the bathroom.

Jamie Bulger. Something I don't think the nation ever really recovered from. It was the only event that has never been joked about or milked for dark humor. Every other murder was. But that truly traumatised a generation of us

Girls in my school home dyeing their choppy "layered" bob the same hue of plum/auburn paired with slight variations on the mid length black trenchcoat and platform heels. Every girl dressed in exactly this from the entire period of 1996 to 99.

No man or boy daring to part his hair on the side or wear acid wash jeans. Come to think of it this went for girls too. If your middle parting drifted to one side it was major cause for panic and you fixed it immediately.

Essential oils gaining popularity and suddenly every Boho gift shop and arty living room stinking like toxic herbal oven cleaner.

The sudden magic of text messaging into our lives and how much it changed everything. You no longer had to give up and go home if your friend did not turn up to the meeting place and you could now find each other if you became separated. You could also cancel on people at the last minute even if you know they had left the house already. You don't know what it was like to live before that!

Instantly available hard-core porn. To all our ruin.

The death of the album as a piece of art in itself.

The start of the long run of unusually warm winters that never really ended.

Slim fast.

The "waaaahhhh Bodyform!" overly elaborate ad for sanitary products that was endlessly parodied into legend.

AbFab being misunderstood as a silly camp comedy for silly camp gay men about fashion and bolly when we all knew that it was an incredibly dark study on parental neglect and child abuse, socipathic irresponsibility and fucked up, terrible mothers .

Johnny Vaughan and Will Mellor forming the template to the benchmark I hold every man up against ever since.

Starbucks just spreading its cancerous wave through our high streets.

The shocking display of public hysteria and outpouring of emotion when Diana died. For about a week or two we genuinely forgot we were Brirish and wept on the streets like grieving sicillan widows.

Liquid soap in the bathroom! ? In a fancy bottle!? With a pump dispenser!? Why I can feel like a princess every day!

I completely forgot the tabloid theme of this thread and went on a random unasked for nostalgia trip. Oh well!

The first time I ever heard of Trump was during tabloid magazines’ coverage of the Marla Maples affair. I’m between Don Jr. and Ivanka in age and lived in Ohio, so I had no idea why he was a person of interest in the magazines.

Also, there was tons of copy about Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson and their breakup.

Club kids and Michael Alig's murder of Angel Melendez

Jerry Seinfeld publicly dating a high school student when he was nearly 40

Yes, the 90s were incredible. I was a teen/young adult and I loved all the trashy talk shows
