Latest Poll: Clinton has commanding lead in Iowa

After weeks of back and forth and up and down polls, the most current shows Hillary on top. With the caucus just one week away, it will be tough for Bernie Sanders to catch her.

The Bernie fanatics will just tell you that all of the voters in Iowa are the Establishment and have been bought by the big banks.

by Anonymousreply 1January 25, 2016 7:22 PM

Did you read the article OP? Hillary does not have a "commanding lead."

by Anonymousreply 2January 25, 2016 7:31 PM

If Bernie wins, get ready for President Trump in 2017.

by Anonymousreply 3January 25, 2016 7:34 PM

Hillary is the most qualified. I'm excited to vote for her.

by Anonymousreply 11January 27, 2016 3:08 AM

This Clinton person accepted $675,000 from Goldman Sachs in 2013. The gall, the hubris of her to run for president after accepting that money is off the charts.

She won't be getting my vote.

by Anonymousreply 21January 28, 2016 1:24 AM

I've been a life long democrat. I cast my first vote for Jimmy Carter. Talking with others of my age and political persuasion our disdain for Hillary is palpable. There is no enthusiasm for her at all. Our attitude is we have no choice but to vote for Mrs Clinton or the gargoyle fascist Repugs will win. We really hoped Elizabeth Warren or even Biden would run. Our hearts our with Bernie Sanders. Unlike our enthusiasm for Obama in 2008 there is zero personal affection for this tired old woman. We seriously doubt Mrs Clinton can even turn out the liberal base to vote.

by Anonymousreply 22January 28, 2016 1:56 AM

Thanks so much for letting us know.

You're obviously a good representation of what "Bernie" supporters are like.

Silly cunt.

by Anonymousreply 23January 28, 2016 2:04 AM

And what makes that so different from the presumed many other Democrats you voted for over the years? Were you really thrilled about Walter Mondale? Excited about Dukakis? Gore? Kerry?

These questions are rhetorical, of course. Because if you tried to tell me you were excited for every other Democratic presidential candidate in the last 40 years and you are faced, in Hillary Clinton, with a candidate that doesn't thrill you for the very first time? I'm afraid I'll have to yell "bullshit" in a very loud and annoying voice. I'd probably draw out the vowels just to make it extra irritating. Maybe throw in some honking noises or something.

by Anonymousreply 27January 28, 2016 2:14 AM

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the kind of thinking that supports a 74-year-old candidate but calls his 67-year-old opponent "granny" as an epithet.

Just kidding. I don't have to figure it out. It's clear and blatant misogyny. It's also anti-Democrat and anti-Progressive, which is how a great deal of Bernie's more ardent online supporters come across.

And it's spelled "loser."

Sweetheart, I hate to break it to you, but you're just not as important as you seem to think; not to me and not to the DNC.

This is how the modern political landscape and voting process works - for both parties. Very, very rarely does a candidate come along that induces the kind of enthusiasm and excitement you seem to crave so desperately from your presidential candidates. In almost all instances, for both parties, in presidential election after presidential election for many decades now, most voters pick the candidate whose party affiliation mostly aligns with their own in order to stave of the election of the other party's candidate. The only people who complain that it's not exciting are political naifs and narcissists.

Please see the entry labeled "Tea Party" for more on this topic.

I'm guessing virtually no one responding with GIFs and insults actually bothered to read beyond the headline. Who knows who else toyed with the idea. But this is the menu we have. Don't play stupid games with your vote. Every fucking time we shit around we get a George Bush or a Ronald Reagan. It's not worth the risk. I was unemployed for nearly 3 years thanks to those fuckers and I saw a lot of good people lose jobs and homes. I will never again risk another Republican in the White House. Hil's campaign manager is from Monsanto. Rupert Murdoch says he could support her. It shows you how far to the right most Democrats have gone that they'd support a candidate who supports "welfare reform", war-mongering, and is against real universal health care. But what we've seen is the great incremental success of what folks call the "Reagan Revolution". Where the political spectrum is conservative neo-liberals to arch-conservatives. Hilary will be the final nail in the coffin of Democratic Party ideals. She'll finish up the Reagan Revolution with big cuts in social programs, and lots of military interventionism overseas.

But the taxes of upper middle class Democrats won't go up as much, and that's all they care about.

by Anonymousreply 55January 28, 2016 3:32 AM

The GOP is terrified of running against Hillary.

It is excited about running against Bernie

by Anonymousreply 64January 28, 2016 2:39 PM

Obama was the first President in a generation that had star quality, was so personally likeable, handsome, had a beautiful young family and pretty wife, and was so well educated, well spoken, elegant, and especially idealistic and optimistic, people were so proud to have represent them around the world. He represented the best of America, what we like people around the world to think we are. Plus, he was actually good at his job, and did his best to make people's lives better. The economy improved under him, millions of jobs were created, though he faced endless mindless opposition from the GOP. The last President like him was probably JFK.

Bill Clinton was a hard worker, he created many more jobs than Obama, even though Republicans were attacking him the whole time. He also had sympathy for lower and middle class people, because that was his background and he came from a poor state and poor family.

Bill Clinton was a different type of personality, a down to earth, skirt-chasing pol, one that governed in prose and not poetry. He was really excellent at explaining things in a simple way that was very hard to argue with, even for Republicans. He laid it out so simply and clearly even a Teabagger could understand. That's a rare gift that Obama doesn't have, for all his eloquence.

Obama was a unicorn. His like won't come back again for decades, if even in your lifetime. Young people don't realize that now, but they will.

Obama has been President seven years. A lot of millennials can't remember the candidates from previous elections, competent enough but without star power, that people had to get behind for reason of pragmatism.

Think of who these serious candidates were: Walter Mondale. Jimmy Carter. Al Gore. Michael Dukakis. Nice enough guys, but people weren't falling in love with them. They didn't have "It." They voted for them to maintain liberal policies, not for their personalities or looks. And on the Republican side: Bob Dole. John McCain. Bush I & II. None of these guys were good looking, warm or charming, a lot of the wives were cold, hard and brittle. They too were being voted for to maintain Republican policies, not because they were handsome or had electric personalities.

This is what you usually get to vote for, not Elvis. Voting isn't a superficial thing, it's not a beauty contest. You shouldn't be voting for Miss Congeniality or Mr. Best-Dressed. It's cold, hard, pragmatic, not losing ground to the opposition party's platform, and not letting them roll back everything President Obama and Mrs Obama gave eight years of their lives to accomplish for you. Obama wasn't perfect, but I'd vote for him again if I could.

Forget about who you "like" better. Remember what George W. Bush did to eight years of peace and prosperity. Even worse, he destroyed our county's unity and eroded rights that may never come back, plus gave evangelists even more political power and a seat at the table. Vote for the Democratic nominee, and show up. Don't whine because you don't get your dream candidate, or you'll get your nightmare candidate.

If you think think there's "no difference" between Hillary and Ted Cruz, or Trump, you deserve the eight years of pure hell coming to you, just like we got with W. That's what people said about Al Gore too, when they voted for Ralph Nader. Where would we be now without eight years of Bush?

by Anonymousreply 65January 28, 2016 3:14 PM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 66January 28, 2016 3:22 PM

R65 perfectly put!

by Anonymousreply 67January 28, 2016 5:37 PM

The Clintons love the poor, left behind, disadvantaged groups ... in theory. They love "policy" geared towards them. In reality, the Clintons' greatest strength is Looking Out for Number One. As Jimmy Carter put it in endorsing Obama: "They're there when they need you."

by Anonymousreply 68January 28, 2016 5:46 PM

If you want and approve of hard right policy, with Trump or Cruz you will get those, and presumably be happy about it. Neither Trump or Cruz is going to spend one second worrying about the poor and disadvantaged, their constituents would be very angry if they did. There is no "theory" that involves either one of them being more interested in the poor than any democrat.

Both Trump and Cruz are two of the most hard right candidates running for President in our lifetimes. If you dig down into their policy ideas and Cruz' record, neither is interested in preserving, protecting and defending the Constitution.

Cruz believes not winning the majority vote justifies shutting down the government, rather than respecting the will of the people and who they selected to run the country, or doing his duty to keep the country running and our credit rating undamaged. Cruz cost the country millions, rejected obligations we had to pay our debts, and could have done permanent, long lasting damage to our economy if other countries had decided to go off the United States dollar standard. They would have gone to some other currency and we never would have got that back.

Cruz only cared about getting attention for himself, not the welfare of the country. His reward for this selfish behavior is being a candidate for President with a significant following. There a reason rank and file Republicans don't like a guy that might actually be able to win. He made them all look bad and threw them under the bus.

Trump has no understanding of Constitutional restraints or Congresses' role in writing law. He wants to run the country as supreme ruler, not share the balance of power with Congress or the Supreme Court. That's the way our Constitution is written, and it shouldn't be up for debate, or subject to random people that want to circumvent hundreds of years of precedent for their own benefit. He brags that he is answerable to no one. That's the definition of fascism.

If you really think either Hillary or Bernie are worse than bringing this type of government to the United States, you must be a Republican.

Still think a lot of "pro Bernie" people are actually Republicans in disguise, riling up the ignorant rabble by telling them the way to prove their undying loyalty to Bernie is to undermine Democratic candidates so a Republican can be President. That'll show Hillary! Vote for Trump to put her in her place!

Don't let that Cankles-wearing, cow that needs to be put in a pasture, smells like bacon cooking when she "feels the Bern," (pig) Granny (because Grannies are evil and we all hate our grandmothers) go through the election process being treated with respect! That's against everything Bernie stands for! He would never allow it!

Oh, and Hillary and her husband are rich! That means they're bad and they hate the middle class and poor, just like the families they both come from. Because all rich people are evil!!!!1!!!11

The Rovian, misogynistic name-calling alone is a dead giveaway. And the stupidity of people that fall for it is amazing.

'I called Hillary a two bit Wall St. whore and she hit me with a $675,000 bag of quarters."... Bernie Sanders

by Anonymousreply 77January 29, 2016 3:12 AM

And if he did, he'd deserve it.

There's a lot of "democrats" out there that are too stupid to understand that they're falling for Rovian divide and conquer tactics. Remember a presidential candidate called Barack HUSSEIN Obama way back in 2008? Remember how he was called a Kenyan, Communist, fascist, terrorist (at the same time), called the n-word everywhere, he and his wife were called hairy apes and gorillas, there were pictures distributed of watermelons growing on the White House lawn? Conservative racists referred to it as the "Black House" and said it would have to be cleaned before decent, God-fearing white people (Republicans) could live in it again.

Well, wake up morons, you're being played, and you're falling for it. The Republicans think Hillary is the one to beat, so they accuse her of being a Republican. Have you even seen a single Republican debate? Here's a Republican:

No abortions ever, even to save the mother's life. No EPA. No department of education. No ACA and no single payer, ever. All blacks and Mexicans are subhuman animals. Women don't need equal pay, nobody needs maternity or paternity leave. Taxes for the rich should be cut and redistributed into the backs of the poor. Religious leaders should dictate the content of every schoolbook. Religious pharmacists should decide whether you're allowed to have your medicine. Prayer in school, work and the military. It will be evangelical Christian prayer whether you like it or not. No OSHA. No unions. Your boss should decide if you're allowed to have birth control, and you can be fired if you do. Women can be fired for getting pregnant. Forget about clean water or minimum wage, you don't need that.

And once they've ridiculed Hillary off the stage for daring to be an rich older woman running for President (just like all the other women holding office around the world for decades), guess what? BERNIE'S NEXT, you gullible morons. Decide and conquer is what they do, and you're letting them.

by Anonymousreply 78January 29, 2016 2:59 PM

That's "divide and conquer."

What's so horrible about Hillary and Bill being rich and powerful on their own anyway? She's a lawyer. Do you expect her to be a toothless, barefoot welfare mother? A hippie? They're both brilliant people. Do you expect them to lose all their money through bad investments and be poor? Give all their money away to charity? What male candidate has done that? Trump?

Look at the people that are traditional candidates. Almost all of them are rich, especially if they're older. Why? Because they're intelligent, ambitious, well-educated people. Most are lawyers. Who do you want for a President, Jesus? Good luck with that. People like that don't run for President.

All viable candidates are ego-driven, brilliant, and hard nosed politicians. If they aren't, they're not qualified to be President. Neither Hillary or any other female candidate is ever going to be some warm hearted, loving mommy. Forget it. The men aren't either, and nobody expects them to be.

Yeah, I remember this from the last primary season. Rove's hate minions pretending to be Obama supporters or Clinton supporters and writing absolutely vile stuff trying to get all the threads derailed. Clearly they're back.

Sanders would never countenance the misogyny we're seeing here, and neither would any true supporter of his. Ditto that 'pledge' I read about somewhere on one of these threads. That's pure Rove, it has his dirty little paw prints all over it.

Passionate disagreement is all to the good. It's an essential part of thinking critically about the candidates. Misogynists and neo-nazis get the ignore button. And I'm finding the debate and commentary at DL is excellent when they disappear.

by Anonymousreply 84January 30, 2016 2:02 AM

Exactly. Can you imagine who Donald Trump would appoint to the Supreme Court. Trump, both houses of congress plus a stronger Supreme Court majority means reversal on gay rights.

I was on Reddit a while ago, they were talking about Hillary's emails. Not a word about Colin Powell also having a private server, and using it to send his emails when he was SoS, exactly like Hillary. Powell was the first one to do this.

Every other post was, "If Bernie doesn't get the nomination, I'm voting for Trump." Sure you are, because you're a Republican.

There were so many Trump = Bernie posts, I thought, Trump is paying people to do this. Trump and Bernie are not at all the same thing politically. Most of their views are very much opposed to each other. If you're dumb enough to think they are interchangable, you're easy to troll. It just shows you people are voting for personalities, and they don't know what any of these people actually stand for.

The vitriol launched at Hillary from the frat boy Bernbots has become so excessive even Bernie's people are finally feebly protesting it. Their version is that it's Republican trolls and not their own people, or that their Bernbots are being "misled" because they get their news from the Internet and Twitter and not any actual news source.

Sending people death threats and publicizing someone's child's name and address because they said something positive about Hillary, isn't an innocent, vulnerable child being "misled," it's a low information voter on the left that believes everything fed to them by Republican trolls and decides to act on it. I don't want these people in my party. Go vote for Trump.

"Paul Krugman alludes to it here:

"Right now I’m getting the kind of correspondence I usually get from Rush Limbaugh listeners, although this time it’s from the left — I’m a crook, I’m a Hillary crony, etc., etc.

"A substantial cohort of the most virulent anti-Hillary trolls seem to be working from a script, echoing longstanding rightwing frames, referencing Vince Foster and Whitewater, thoroughly debunked conspiracy theories that predate the adulthood of Bernie’s millennial supporters. It’s no secret that Republicans are actively trying to tilt the election to Bernie, in a belief, mistaken or not, that he will be easier to defeat than Hillary."

The Washington Post found that an anti-Hillary hashtag picked up on Twitter by Bernbots came from...

[...]"Doc Thompson is connected to Glenn Beck, which leads to the unpleasant conclusion that Bernie Sanders supporters who jumped on the hashtag were goaded into doing the right’s dirty work by spreading lies about the Democratic frontrunner.

"The result of this torrent of invective directed at Hillary supporters is twofold. First, since most of Bernie’s younger supporters get their political news online, some have become convinced that Hillary is the world’s worst human being. It doesn’t help that the national media echo rightwing anti-Hillary narratives and reinforce false impressions about her. The combination of online lies and media irresponsibility (not to mention Maureen Dowd-style vendettas) account for negative perceptions of Hillary."

In the past five months, the Berniebro has morphed into a social media mob—aided largely by r/SandersforPresident and a feeling that the media has let them down. The Berniebro is now what happens when Reddit eats a fairly liberal, if irritatingly opinionated white guy, and spits him out. He is tired, he is covered in boils, and he is intent on destroying Hillary Clinton by any. means. necessary.

And he is making the campaign look bad.

Mashable’s Emily Cahn reports that politicians and other public figures who support Hillary Clinton can expect to receive a torrent of often-sexist insults in response. “You should have supported someone with integrity instead of a lying shitbag like HRC,” one Berniebro commented on a photo of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Clinton.

“Their vaginas are making terrible choices,” another commented.

The vitriol became so much that Mike Casca, Sanders’ rapid response director, took to Twitter to make an appeal for common decency:

"if you support BernieSanders please follow the senator's lead and be respectful when people disagree with you. mike casca (@cascamike) "

“We love our supporters and we know we wouldn’t be here without you all, but it does add a layer of complexity when we have to track what you all do during some moments when we are shaping our messaging,” Sanders’ digital media director Hector Sigala followed up on Reddit. “Above all: just know you represent our movement and be respectful with those who disagree with you.”

[the author of the article states]

In an attempt at shaking loose some bros from the internet’s rafters, I posted the comment, “Bernie is great, but isn’t Hillary more electable?” in two popular Facebook groups for Sanders supporters. In the first group, my comment was immediately deleted; in the second, it set off a bomb.

Within 45 minutes, it received almost 150 comments. Most people attempted to convince me why Sanders was the only electable option, many contributed memes, some dismissed me as a “Shillary” troll, and just a few bros reared their heads:

“#NoShillary,” one wrote.

“No she’s a fucking twat,” said another. “I am of the opinion that $hillary is a fucking twat. TWAT TWAT TWAT. Bye felicia!”

“Bernie IS GREAT if you have any morals or ethics that is the end of the discussion... if on the other hand you have no moral compos then why not say trump is more electable than that clitrash ..there now you can vote for the winner... year you .. idiot.. use you vote to do the right thing or get that weak sh&^t and go home...”

After the 25 January Democratic town hall, Emily Nussbaum, television critic for the New Yorker magazine, tweeted some positive feedback for Hillary Clinton.

"I'm into Hillary, obviously, but I genuinely thought she did really well tonight," Ms Nussbaum wrote. About a half an hour later, she followed up with this: "Man, the Feel The Bern crew (as opposed to Bern himself) is such a drag. Say anything pro-Hil & they yell 'bitch' & 'psycho.' V idealistic!"

Others - including a number of prominent members of the media - followed with their own reports of seeing Sanders supporters deploying vicious rhetoric towards anyone questioning the Vermont senator or his backers.

Author Sady Doyle said her tweets about Sanders supporters resulted in "several hundred angry notifications in a 24-hour span from that cohort," she wrote. "Someone also said *I* should die if I thought some Bernie supporters were kinda sexist."

Some say Sanders is the symptom, not the cause - the "Bernie bro" is just an old troll with a new name. Indeed, Sarah Jeong, a journalist who is the frequent target of sexist attacks, has received so much vitriol in the name of Sanders she set her Twitter account to private - even though she too is a Sanders fan. Kathleen Geier, a freelance contributor to The Nation and herself a Sanders supporter, says while she has gotten her fair share of ugly online comments from male Clinton supporters, the level of vitriol coming from what she calls a "tiny minority" of Sanders boosters troubles her.

"I think they're doing harm to the cause," she says. "I haven't seen people treat Obama supporters like this, or supporters of other male establishment candidates - just Hillary. So it's definitely misogyny." Sexism is not the only bad behaviour demonstrated online by Sanders supporters - an ugly racial element has arisen, too.

"I've gotten everything from 'shill', 'paid infiltrator', to flat out having somebody actually call me a N***** in the midst of this," says Elon James White, CEO of This Week in Blackness, who has been critical of Mr Sanders' record on race.

"They harass and try to take away the credibility from the people who question Mr Sanders."

by Anonymousreply 115January 31, 2016 6:26 PM

R107, those are direct quotes from articles. Follow the links and you'll see none of it is my personal text.

The point being, there has evolved a bunch of young white, privileged frat boys that support Bernie, or are maybe just Republicans pretending to support Bernie in order to name call Hillary and her supporters. They're also calling black Hillary supporters the "n"word, and sending death threats, doxxing people and generally giving Bernie a bad name. They're attacking and flaming female journalists especially.

It's become so extreme that the Bernie campaign has become aware of it. A couple of Bernie campaign staffers have asked supporters on Reddit and Twitter to stop attacking Hillary supporters. Unlike immature, irresponsible internet trolls for Bernie, Bernie himself knows in order to win the election he needs these extremely misogynistic trolls to lay off Hillary supporters because he needs Hillary supporters' votes in the general election. A number of Democratic voters that hadn't yet made their minds up started complaining that they were driven towards Hillary, and away from Bernie, by the hate filled misogynistic rants against both Hillary and any person that made the slightest positive comment towards her. A number of female journalists complained to the campaign that they were being doxxed by these people.

However, I've not seen Bernie himself say definitively that these people need to stop. Most are undeterred by gentle chiding from staffers they've never heard of. They won't stop until Bernie says so and maybe not then. Also, the Bernie campaign is finally becoming aware that many are Republican trolls trying to smear both him and Hillary at the same time and discourage women Democrats from voting in the general election, thereby making a Republican winner more likely.

Until Bernie personally repudiates the vile language of these trolls, I don't believe he respects women or women's interests, Hillary aside. The vitriol leveled towards women journalists and voters is very extreme. He should have got on top of it himself by now.

Once I read an article or two about this, I started following the links and they are everywhere. Horribly misogynistic trolls allowed to run free everywhere with only the most feeble, half-hearted protests, and no real condemnation from the top. Shit rolls downward.

The 2016 Presidential Election season officially gets underway on Monday evening, Feb. 1, with the Iowa caucuses, and advancing snow may affect voter turnout. Voters from Iowa's 99 counties will meet in caucuses as the first step to determine who will represent the state at the Republican and Democratic national conventions. However, a winter storm moving in from the Intermountain West will unleash a blizzard from Colorado to Iowa and northern Michigan later on Monday into early Wednesday. The voting prospects weather-wise could become precarious before the close of the caucuses because of the incoming storm system, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Rinde stated. Snow and a wintry mix will arrive in part of the state on Monday afternoon and evening bringing 12-18" with blizzard conditions! The caucuses are scheduled to be begin at 7:00 p.m. CST.

by Anonymousreply 132January 31, 2016 9:09 PM

Glenn Greenwald in that article seems to be claiming all the hostility is aimed at Hillary. Not true, a lot of it is aimed at female supporters or journalists reporting on Hillary.

A man shouldn't think he can define for women what they're going to find offensive. He's not understanding that women don't like misogyny no matter whom it's directed to.

Look at it this way: the first out male gay candidate that has a good chance of winning the nomination and the Presidency runs. Out of the woodwork comes every Republican, Christian, teabagger bigot in America, and Democratic bigots as well. This man is continually called a whore, a f****, a shitbag, a loser, described as filth in every personal way imaginable. This goes on and worsens month after month. Anyone who defends him or stands up for gays or civility is bullied off the internet.

Okay, gay guys, are you not going to take that personally? Are you going to cheerfully vote for his Democratic primary opponent in the general election, who stood by and did nothing while all this was said on his behalf by his supporters? And what do you think his opponent thinks of you, and your friends, really, if this all okay with him?

I have no idea if Nate is right or not, but Bill was governor of Arkansas. And well known to be a white good ol' boy and will likely campaign for her there. I would think Southerners would rather vote for someone with Southern ties than Northern ones. Much less a Northeastern Jew. The Clintons are generally known to have been brought up with Christian roots. That's a big deal in the south, they actually consider Christianity to be a qualification, like it or not.

Obama had a lot of regional problems with conservative states that Hillary doesn't. She's white, nobody's ever going to accuse her of being a secret Muslim. The South is more conservative and not less.

I don't know how much trouble Bernie's going to have with his regional background and religion, but he could have some. It would be naive to think not.

by Anonymousreply 140January 31, 2016 9:24 PM

What R 116 is the biggest bunch of bull posted on The DL. When has Sanders said anything against abortion or women's rights? Don't confuse what a small subset of people are saying versus what a person believes. On the other hand, Hil believes in bombing countries and killing innocent civilians. Unless she denounces her involvement on the bombing of Belgrade, the foreign policy that leas to the debacles in Syria, Egypt and Libya I cannot take her seriously.

by Anonymousreply 141January 31, 2016 9:32 PM

It is well known Bernie Sanders is anti semitic and will not support Israel.

by Anonymousreply 142January 31, 2016 9:37 PM

R141, what are you reading? There isn't one word about abortion or women's rights in that entire post. That's not the issue at all.

The issue is vile, sexist personal attacks on Hillary, her supporters, and female journalists that cover her. About people not personally involved in the campaign in any way being attacked by trolls. There's not a word about anybody having an abortion.

by Anonymousreply 143January 31, 2016 9:38 PM

"I love the smell of desperation in the morning"... Bernie Sanders

by Anonymousreply 144January 31, 2016 9:41 PM

I'm embarrassed by this thread. So much hate and mud slinging among Democrats and Progressives. It's one man or woman, one vote. EVERYONE votes his or her own interests. There are no PUMAS this time around. It doesn't matter who the Republicans pick as their nominee. They are all the same. In Bernie and Clinton we have candidates who agree more than they disagree. Despite the campaign rhetoric. And who have a genuine respect for each other. Just different approaches to the same problems that plague the 99%. Does anyone here think that Bernie would withold his support for Clinton and advise his supporters to do the same? The name calling is lame. As is the ageism, anti-semitism, and misogyny on display here. Just grow up. Vote for whoever you think is the better person in the meantime and then rally behind the winner in November. It is what an adult would do. Sheesh.

by Anonymousreply 145January 31, 2016 9:50 PM

R145, again, the issue isn't whether Bernie would stand on a stage and denounce all women on earth as evil monsters whose votes he doesn't need or want. That would be idiotic, and Bernie's not an idiot.

The issue is that Bernie is standing on a stage almost every day with a camera in front of him, and he could easily put a stop to most of this by using some of that shouting and arm-waving to say it's totally unacceptable and he won't have it. He doesn't.

That leaves many women with little confidence that he respects them or their concerns, or is even listening to them. It makes it seem that he thinks he's guaranteed women's votes without having to do even a bare minimum to see to it they are treated with respect. It's my understanding that black women are also getting racial epithets from his supporters. Having some unknown campaign staffer meekly post a few words on Reddit isn't cutting it. If Bernie can't handle a few fratboy trolls, what's he going to do with Congress? It's an entire body of nothing but trolls, and he can't accomplish anything if he lets them walk all over him and pretends he's helpless to do anything about it and won't even try.

Running for President is not when you want to impress on people how helpless and ineffective you are.

by Anonymousreply 147January 31, 2016 10:18 PM

I can't understand the hate for the "bombings of Belgrade", since Bill Clinton's support of the NATO military action in the 1990s stopped their genocide. It's a generally peaceful area now, with some countries of the former Yugoslavia now part or heading towards becoming part of the EU and NATO. What is wrong with peace?

by Anonymousreply 148January 31, 2016 10:21 PM

I believe most of the hate ostensibly between Bern & Hillary supporters is actually from Republicans. They lie, cheat, steal. They represent the ugliest characteristics of humanity in action. They try to get the Dems fighting between themselves, and we, the Dems, should ignore that ugliness.

by Anonymousreply 149January 31, 2016 10:25 PM

With all due respect, r146, I don't know what the F you are talking about. Really. Seems like you are the troll here. Hitting all the negative, and wildly outlandish, bases without offering one iota of proof that anything you have written is true. Or more to the point, none of what you purport seems to be grounded in reality. Bernie and his supporters are: 1. Misogynists. Even the females? 2. Racist. Throwing "racial epithets" at the people of color who attend his events even though people complain that his rallies in Iowa and New Hampshire are "lilly white"? Are these people throwing shade at shadows? Enlighten me. 3. Lack the backbone to stand up to fratboys? Like Christie, Rubio and Trump? Like I said. Vote for the person who you think is the right one for the job and let everyone else do the same.

by Anonymousreply 150January 31, 2016 10:28 PM

There are numerous articles upthread. If you don't choose to read them it doesn't mean they don't exist.

Obviously there was no claim that"even the females" were misogynist. You're just making that up. The people getting called racist names were writing in asking about black issues and Bernie's support of them or lack thereof. That's their issue and not mine. There seems to be some question in the black community about whether Bernie supports particular issues having to do with the black community. They have the right to ask without name calling, they want to know what candidate to support. There's nothing wrong with being involved and asking questions.

Attacking me and pretending this issue doesn't exist proves nothing. There are articles about it everywhere. Bernie's own campaign staff have left messages on Twitter and Reddit about it, why would they do that if it never happened?

by Anonymousreply 151January 31, 2016 11:10 PM

R151, you may think that you're doing Hillary a favor with your wildly exaggerated posts in this thread and others. You're not. In fact, it's people like you who drive some people away from Hillary to support Bernie instead. Insulting Bernie supporters as stupid and naive and trying to paint them as racist, sexist fratboys is likely to backfire if and when Hillary wins the nomination and needs Bernie's supporters to rally behind her.

I would also add that if Hillary and her supporters can't withstand some insults from Bernie supporters on Twitter, how the hell will they cope with the inevitable barrage of far worse insults from Republicans when we get to the general election?

by Anonymousreply 152January 31, 2016 11:26 PM

It's "wildly exaggerated" to quote articles verbatim?

I'm not trying to help Hillary. You're so obsessed with with putting down and patronizing any woman with any opinion, you don't even bother to understand the point, which is not about Hillary being trolled, it's about people that are not Hillary being trolled. Get it?

Jesus Christ, every woman in America is not named Hillary and every woman in America doesn't think, do and say exactly as Hillary would do. But there's damn few woman in America that like being talked down to like they're garbage.

The Republican party is extremely misogynistic. The Democratic Party has always been a place where women could go and be treated with respect. Get it through your head, Democratic women will still exist if Hillary does not win the nomination. If Bernie is going to let his trolls declare open season on any women that dares to express any opinion that isn't Bernie worship, and that's exactly what's happening now, even very mild criticism is met with attacks, then why should women get out and vote for him?

Or do you think a Democratic candidate can win with many Democratic women voters just not voting?

by Anonymousreply 153February 1, 2016 12:13 AM

Does merely saying that something is true make it true? No. Why aren't these alleged incidents of racism and misogyny being committed by Bernie supporters being reported in the media? It sounds to me like you are trying to discredit the hordes of young and college aged men and women who support him. The ones who think that Hillary is dishonest, untrustworthy, or simply more of the same old. Not one reporter, news organization, political pundit, talking head including FOX news is interested in investigating what should be a major story on the eve of the first votes being cast in Iowa? I find it disingenuous of you to say that you are not trying to help Hillary. Although that is certainly your prerogative but you seem to have an agenda, r153. I am a woman and nothing you say rings true.

by Anonymousreply 154February 1, 2016 12:53 AM

Stop putting words in my mouth. This has nothing to do with whether some people like Bernie or not. I don't know how many times I have to say the same thing over and over to get your mind to stop wandering to completely unrelated topics. This is about one thing, and that one thing is not how much people love Bernie.

Apparently you can't even imagine such a thing, but it is possible to support a candidate without viciously attacking every person in your own party that doesn't worship at his feet. There is such a thing as civility. Maybe you've never heard of it and can't imagine why anybody would have it, but it exists.

If you want the Democratic nominee to win, quit driving off women that haven't made up their minds about who to support, who support Hillary now but would be expected to support Bernie in the general if he wins the primaries, and for God's sake, don't attack journalists. Nobody ever wins a fight with journalists that have a column in some journal to give their side. This amateurish and petty behavior isn't helping Bernie, it's just making him and his followers look like a bunch of assholes. How is that helping?

Yes, you love Bernie to the depth of your being. Good for you. But you're making me think he's an asshole because he's using attack dogs like you to harass people that don't think he's god's gift to humanity. If he's that great, he ought to be able to convince people without a bunch of childish fanboys bullying skeptics to the ends of the earth.

[quote]I believe most of the hate ostensibly between Bern & Hillary supporters is actually from Republicans

Nope. Go on Democratic Underground. It's all there and then some from longtime democratic posters who are Bernie supporters. People are getting reported and kicked off for simply questioning Sanders. In fact, some of them are cracking jokes now over how these women are getting treated by the Sanders supporters. It's appalling.

And Clinton was called to the carpet back in 2008 to reign in her supporters who were attacking .

[quote] Go on Democratic Underground. It's all there and then some from longtime democratic posters who are Bernie supporters

So some troublesome posters on Democratic Underground = all Sanders supporters are racist, sexist jerks? God, you are unhinged.

by Anonymousreply 157February 1, 2016 1:41 AM

I never said all Sanders supporters are racist and sexist.

My point was to say that it wasn't simply the fault of Republicans. That there were Sanders supporters who were just as bad.

You should be bright enough to grasp such a simple statement.

No matter what happens in Iowa and New Hampshire, Bernie and Hillary will come out with roughly the same number of delegates. It really doesn't matter much. And then on to South Carolina which has more delegates up for grabs, and Hillary has a commanding lead there and will take it in a walk.

The reality is that Bernie and Hillary are likely to split the first caucuses, IA going to Hillary and NH going to Bernie. From there, it's hard to find too many places where Bernie will win.

by Anonymousreply 159February 1, 2016 1:53 AM

Except Bernie's numbers in New Hampshire are rather lopsided compared to the narrow ones in Iowa, so he will end up having far more delegates than she will after those two states.

by Anonymousreply 160February 1, 2016 1:57 AM

No r160. Firstly, the allocation of delegates in Iowa takes place at a state convention, has a series of arcana rules, and is not directly connected to the state's caucus night. In 2012, Rick Santorum won the Iowa Caucus, but Ron Paul collected more delegate votes, and he didn't even come in second.

Even combined, I owa and New Hampshire don't have many delegates anyway, they are small states.

Also consider this. There are 46 Democrats in the US Senate. Bernie Sanders is one of them, so there are 45 Dem Senators who might endorse their colleague Bernie. How many have? Zero. How many have endorsed Hillary Clinton, many of who served with her? Thirty nine. Only six who haven't, and guess when most of those six will endorse her? After tomorrow, I imagine. I doubt Elizabeth Warren will sully herself endorsing either until the winner is clear. Why do you think that is? Don't give me any of that Debbie Wasserman-Schultz crap either! They haven't endorsed him, because they CAN'T STAND HIM!

sorry to say R161 but lack of endorsement from the congress is very much a mark in the Bern's favor.

i think they're mostly afraid of political blowback tho. hillary has been slated the easy winner for months now and these clowns are far more interested in keeping their jobs than Actually Helping People.

i'm embarrassed to say that i just learned that democratic primaries were not a winner-takes-all affairs. am i the only ignorant person??

by Anonymousreply 163February 1, 2016 6:01 AM

Why, getting the Congress's overwhelming support sure is one glowing endorsement. *snort*

by Anonymousreply 164February 1, 2016 6:02 AM

Hillary cut deals to get them donors for their races, dear. Of course, they will endorse her. Congress is all about whoring yourself to money so you can not be voted out.

by Anonymousreply 165February 1, 2016 6:03 AM

I am sure many of Bern's Democrat colleagues in Congress think he is an honest man, believe his ideas are best for the country, and are astounded and possibly in awe at his grassroots success with public funding of donations, but they have to tow the party line and go with Hillary. Since when has politics been about standing for who and what you truly believe in?

by Anonymousreply 166February 1, 2016 6:08 AM

Hillary just hasn't ignited any real interest, yes, she's a known figure, but she's tired in her execution of her every move, it's just plodding.

by Anonymousreply 167February 1, 2016 6:10 AM

R161

I hear what you're saying, but Democrats run by slightly different rules so you're rather comparing apples and oranges. What would more support your argument is that Hillary seems to have better overall statewide strength, whereas his is concentrated in more liberal areas, so he has the danger of over performing there.

In caucus states last time, Ron Paul was able to snag lots of first-tier delegates by getting young libertarians to show up in heavily Democratic areas where no one would have shown up at all in some of these precincts, automatically electing themselves. As I understand it, tomorrow night the final delegate allocation for Republicans is fixed at one national convention vote per 3.3% earned statewide, even if many of delegates are establishment people who don't support the winning candidate.

by Anonymousreply 170February 1, 2016 6:32 AM

R163, it's EXACTLY that kind of naiveté that annoys me about Bernie supporters. How is the President supposed to get anything done if he has zero support in Congress, and nobody in Congress is willing to work with him? Are you even thinking this through?

Do you actually want to get things done, or do you just want to say "fuck you" to the system and let the entire country fall apart in the mean time?

by Anonymousreply 171February 1, 2016 6:42 AM

I expect Congress would be as "friendly" to Hillary as it's been to Obama.

by Anonymousreply 172February 1, 2016 8:21 PM

Well, one good thing if Hillary is elected. She won't waste years on end with that "we aren't red states and blue states, we are the United States" bullcrap like Obama. That was a very statesmanlike thing to say, but we've spent the last seven years learning it isn't true. With a vengeance.

She will expect zero Republican cooperation without old-fashioned wheeling and dealing. I know that's horrifying to millennials, who think standing on principal is more important than accomplishing anything, but that's why they call it politics. It's been that way since George Washington.

How much of the present gridlock is just Obama not being mean and ruthless enough? We can't just be nice and be used as doormats by the Republicans. People act like like Hillary being a crook is a bad thing. She may be a crook, but she's our crook.

Look at all those, sweet, polite, genteel folk on the other side she has to work with. I hope if elected, she gets a voodoo doll for every Republican congressman and sticks pins in it for four years straight. You can't baby those people.

by Anonymousreply 185February 1, 2016 11:43 PM

Gosh, this sounds like Ralph Nader in 2000, remember him? And remember how we voted in Bush, the worst POTUS ever, who is solely responsible for the worst foreign policy ever that resulted in ISIS?

I have a horrible feeling that the SJWs will derail the general election and there will be a President Trump or Cruz.

by Anonymousreply 186February 3, 2016 5:09 AM

Wait, R185, her big claim to fame is that she can indeed "work with" the Republican Congress! She boasts about how well she gets along with them when the political heat is off. I think they'll treat her like shite, but what do I know ...
