I choose McDLT, I seriously miss them, but I could add the original high-fat fries, the best fries there ever were.

The probably toxic concoction that was the original MCDonalds "Orange drink."
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 19, 2016 8:19 PM |
I'm pretty sure the majority of your listed items were never marketed in the US, so how would we know? The only ones I've ever heard of were the McDLT, McPizza and Big-n-Tasty. ("Super Size" is not a different type of food, so that's irrelevant.)
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 19, 2016 8:22 PM |
The McGratin just sounds nasty. Therefore, resurrect it in those inbred Midwestern states and maybe they'll die out.

R6 I didn't mention the word "food' anywhere.
The above 10 are failed products/product lines that are no longer found on the McDonald's menu today.
The "Super Size" product line was stopped after the documentary "Super Size Me" popped up a few years ago.
The question isn't "which discontinued product have you sampled?" but which product/product line you want to see revived so you might actually get to try it (if you're curious about it).
Most LGBT teenagers around the world might not have tasted a single item listed above but they can vote (like myself & others) out of curiosity. :)

The Steak Sandwich from the late-1970s/early-1980s.
I think McDonald's, which claimed it wasn't successful in some markets, bailed because of the expense of the product in relation to their guideline in menu prices. (Back then, McDonald's didn't want to much a gap so that its items appeared very affordable.)
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 19, 2016 9:08 PM |
Another vote for McDLT. Great burger, surprisingly so considering where it came from.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 19, 2016 9:24 PM |
The McLobster ? I've got to go google whatever the fuck that is ...... probably just a nasty ol' lobster roll.
Do they still do the orange milkshake ? I think it was seasonal like the shamrock shake.
I'd vote for that.
Also the Mc Alexis Arquette DOES sound nasty. Gotta google that one too.

McDLT died when McDonalds did away with styrofoam. How in the world could you keep "the hot side hot and the cold side cold," as advertised without it?
I'm with r14 with the shakes. I lived for the Shamrock Shake around St. patty's day when I was a little fatty. Not a huge fan of the Artic Orange but my brother was. I also really miss their big ass cheese and apple Danishes.

I worked at McDs back in the 70s as a teenager. They did not overcook the patties the way they do now because of E. coli etc so they were at least somewhat juicy and tender, unlike the dried out shoe leather they serve now. We used to mix the shamrock and chocolate shakes together - mmmm good. Wonder why they never offered that combo on the menu?

by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 24, 2016 5:14 PM |
Totally the McPizza... those things rocked.
But... before the nation-wide McPizza, they had a different one that was even better. It was a deep-fried stuffed pizza... like a Hot Pocket thing. It was DELICIOUS. But as far as I know it was only test marketed in the Columbus Ohio area in the mid 80s.
I also wish they'd bring back the McChicken. All the ones around here are the "Hot and Spicy" version... you can't get a REGULAR one. I hate the fake chemical burn of the "Hot and Spicy" ones. I want the REGULAR McChicken!
Also the "ChickenLT" was a great, low-calorie grilled chicken that was delicious (it was at the same time as the McDLT). Lettuce, Tomato, honey mustard, grilled chicken, on a toasted bun.
I also wish they'd bring back my favorite desserts: Baked Cherry Pies (they almost never have them around here), Egg Nog shakes during the holidays.... and back in the early 80s, they did a "Wild Raspberry Shake" that was fucking delicious.
But more than anything else, I wish they'd bring back the Chicken Fajitas. THOSE THINGS RULED.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 24, 2016 5:22 PM |
Back in the eighties/early-nineties they had a Cheddar Melt. It was a quarter pound burger with a rye bun and a cheese sauce with onions on the meat. Those were so good.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 24, 2016 5:30 PM |
They recently had 'special quarter pounders', and one of them was the "Jabenero Ranch" Quarter Pounder... I loved that thing. So zesty and tangy.
When that went away with their recent "menu simplification', I stopped going. I only started going again when they started the 24-hour breakfast thing.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 24, 2016 5:33 PM |
I hate their new chicken sandwiches ("BUTTERMILK!")
I want the "Southern Style Chicken Sandwich" back. It was better than Chick-Fil-A!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 24, 2016 5:33 PM |
McD's used to be good road trip food because it was clean and consistent. That has changed in the last decade or so and it is no longer trust worthy at all. For a while, a good bet was to eat only at corporate owned outlets, but the last time I did, I got a burger that smelled like bleach...
Now when I drive, I carry a cooler and buy deli meat at supermarkets along the way for sandwiches. This also allows me to drink milk instead of soda.

They had the McLobster at some coastal NE McDs this summer. I haven't been there since then so I don't know if they still have them. To my recollection, it is usually only a summer offering - although I might be thinking that because I'm usually only there during the summer. It isn't bad - big chunks of real lobster and just a bit of mayo.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 24, 2016 5:42 PM |

I wish they did the 'special shake' thing where they had different shakes every quarter.... Egg Nog for Holidays, Peppermint in the winter, Shamrock Shakes in the spring, Arctic Orange in the summer, Wild Raspberry in the fall.
They did that with pies for a while too. Cherry in the winter, Pineapple in the spring, Blueberry in the summer, Pumpkin in the fall.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 24, 2016 6:31 PM |
The "product" they should revive are spotlessly clean stores. That's what they use to be know for on road trips where you'd stop to use the bathrooms. Got them a lot of business because then a lot of the time you'd end up buying something. The last few times i've been in the stores complete mess. So they don't get that business anymore. Lot control of the franchise.

I don't know if it was ever a secret, but even when neither was on the menu you could order a Grilled Cheese or a double cheeseburger at MCD's.
The real secret was ordering a sandwich "off the grill" at BK which used to be code for "not one that's been under a heat lamp too long or is going in the microwave". (Probably theat has changed )
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 24, 2016 8:20 PM |
The "Grilled Cheese" is called a "Toasted Cheese"... and I'm pretty sure you can still order it. People ordered it a lot when I worked for McDonald's back in the 80s.

I used to love the danishes that were sold at breakfastime. I got (rightfully) embarrassed by a childhood friend's mother for eating 5 of them at one time. I was only 7. What happened was that - the morning after a "slumber party" - this friend's father took all of us to a nearby McDonald's for breakfast. He basically encouraged us to eat to our hearts' content - and I took him up on his offer. I would devour one, then ask him to buy me another one...then we would go back in the line and buy another one. This was repeated 5 times. When we got back to my friend's house - the father must have mentioned it to his wife (out of my earshot), and she proceeded to "tease" me about it. I was embarrassed. I knew I was a pig - but, darn - those danishes...
Well anyway - those danishes need to come back exactly as they were in the early-1980s.
And bring back the Hot Mustard Sauce, darn it! As far as I was concerned, McDonald's had a clear advantage over other fast food restaurants when it came to that sauce. I tend to prefer spicy/hot things over sweet-ish things - and fast-food places annoy me with this "Honey Mustard" monotony. Bring the heat!
I hated it when - after all these years - they dumped the Hot Mustard Sauce in favor of sauces that I don't like that much. I also liked their more recent "Sweet Chili" (IIRC) sauce (which actually had some spice) - but they inexplicably got rid of that after a short while.
The absence of those sauces - especially the Hot Mustard sauce - has cost them visits, as far as I'm concerned.
Cherry pies should also make a comeback. I miss the days when there was that choice.
They should also bring back the fries cooked in beef tallow - which infused the fries with richness and flavor. Saturated fat gets a bad rap; polyunsaturated fats may actually be worse for you.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | January 25, 2016 9:00 AM |
Funny - in my childhood, I was both a McDonald's fiend and a pizza fiend - and - for the life of me - I cannot remember McDonald's ever having a "McPizza". Did that come along before my time (mid/late-'70s) - or did it just miss the Atlanta market?
by Anonymous | reply 102 | January 25, 2016 9:03 AM |
But above all - I remember a time when McDonald's food just tasted better and was more satisfying. Or have my taste buds changed over time?
The removal of various menu items so that there is much less choice is frustrating. Along with the two flavors of pies that we used to get - we also used to get three types of sundaes, the three different breakfast danishes, etc..
by Anonymous | reply 103 | January 25, 2016 9:05 AM |
I liked the chicken and bacon wrap and they already TOOK THEM OFF THE MENU. Now you can only get the small snack wraps.

According to Wiki, it was a large market test: in 500+ U.S. stores over nearly a decade. All Canadian stores had it. Franchisees weren't thrilled to buy and maintain the extra pizza ovens, and the disruption to workflow it required.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | January 25, 2016 2:18 PM |
Thanks, R105. I'm curious about how a McDonald's pizza tasted. Then again - perhaps the answer can be found in our memories of school lunchroom pizza, or some brands of frozen pizza that are on the market.
If the McPizza was ever in the Atlanta area - it must have been gone by the late-'70s. Perhaps the pizza was relatively limited to Northeastern and/or Midwestern franchises - pizza only started becoming popular in the South much later than it did in the Yankee states.
I also have no memory of the McHotDog. I've wondered why the "Big 3" fast-food joints have mostly stayed away from having hot dogs on their menus. I remember a brief time in the mid-'80s when Wendy's sold hot dogs - but it turned out to be very temporary.

R109, I believe the pizzas were either a late 80s thing or an early 90s thing.
The first test try of the pocket-pizzas (basically deep-fried like the old apple pies, but stuffed with cheese, sauce, and pepperoni like a hot pocket) were mid-80s. The "real" pizzas came after that. And they weren't bad. Not great, mind you. But they weren't bad.

And yeah, the sweet chili sauce was good too. I always got the grilled sweet-chili chicken wrap (made with that sauce... grilled chicken, cucumbers, lettuce, etc.). It was delicious, and nutritious, and low in fat and calories.
So of course they got rid of it.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | January 25, 2016 6:17 PM |
for a while they did apple pie a-la-mode. It was shortly after the switch to baked pies. You'd get an apple pie, topped with soft-serve and caramel topping in a dish. It was good.

[quote]The first test try of the pocket-pizzas (basically deep-fried like the old apple pies, but stuffed with cheese, sauce, and pepperoni like a hot pocket)
That actually sounds good. They should bring it back with more varieties. They can have a meatball and marinara one, a cheeseburger one, a nacho one, a chicken and cheese one.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 25, 2016 6:48 PM |
They are going the opposite direction and simplifying the menu. It just adds to cost and complexity to have to many items. Choose a few things and get them right. Gotta keep it cheap and simple.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 25, 2016 6:52 PM |
I remember the cheese danish ( it was pretty good) but I have no memory of the items listed in the poll ( other than super size) or in the comments.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | January 25, 2016 7:00 PM |
R121, they were delicious, and at the time, they were cheap as hell. I was a college student, and lived off of them. They were very filling.
But alas, they were only popular in the McDonald's stores on college campuses. They failed everywhere else. So they were withdrawn pretty quickly, without ever expanding beyond the initial test markets in Ohio.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | January 25, 2016 7:01 PM |
Maybe R122, but they've removed all the reasons I ever went there. Except for the all day breakfast thing, which brought me back occasionally for a sausage McMuffin with egg or a breakfast burrito.
Seriously, the more I think about it... they've LITERALLY gotten rid of everything I ever liked to go there for.
Their burgers are boring, and their current line up of chicken sandwiches is bleh.

All their shake machines have four flavor capacity. I don't understand why they don't make use of that more. It'd be a good driver to get people in and coming back, as they cycle through "special shake" flavors, at least quarterly, if not monthly.
Peppermint, Arctic Orange, Egg Nog, Wild Raspberry, Mint/Shamrock, Caramel, Blueberry, Pineapple, Peanut Butter, Black Cherry, Amaretto, ....
So many possible flavors.
Yet in most stores, for most of the time, that fourth flavor option sits empty.

The McPizza was actually pretty good, and as noted above, they do the McLobster pretty much every summer in many New England restaurants, and it gets surprisingly good reviews. Every so often they'll offer a coffee milkshake, which is delicious.

I remember those. The ads for the Cheddar Melt got me into McDonald for the first time in many years. Damn, that burger was like crack...delicious! Someone mentioned the bagel breakfast sandwiches and the mozzarella sticks-they are both back on the menu. McPizza- I remember it advertised but I thought the concept was stupid. Do they still do Shamrock Shakes around St. Patrick's Day? Every year kids in my school would run to the school nurse after shitting a green turd, not realizing the green food coloring in the shake was responsible. It got so bad the school nurse issued a pamphlet for parents on how kids might leave a green "Number Two" (seriously, that's how she wrote it, caps and all) after having a Shamrock Shake and we had to take the pamphlet home to our parents. That lasted two years before it was stopped by the PTA. Hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | February 1, 2016 9:08 PM |
Some places do, R159. But it seems to be optional. I hadn't seen a shamrock shake in over a decade until about two years ago, when suddenly they appeared again.
I have no confidence they'll do them again this spring, but when they do them, I always get one.
They're not nearly as 'green' as they used to be, but they still taste good.

Chicken select strips were on the menu over 10 years...then gone. They were actually made out of chicken, not fused patty material. A lot of people liked them & all kinds of social media campaigns tried to save them, but McDs wouldn't do it. Back around 84-85 or so, they test marketed a McPizza that was totally different... more a pocket-pizza, like a Hot Pocket. And it was deep fried. They were AWESOME. And really cheap, and really filling. They had them at the McDonalds on the Ohio State University campus, and let me tell you, they sold like crazy because they were such cheap, filling food for starving college students.
But apparently that location was the ONLY place they sold, and they didn't last more than six months or so.

I wish they would bring back the full cast of McDonaldland characters. I guess it wouldn't work now because TV commercials are so short, but I remember them in the 70s as being enchanting. It reminded me how I was born in the 50s, but didn't feel as if my nephew who was born in the mid 70s was from a generation all that much different than mine. The McD holiday ads were ... nice. Ice skating, kids and characters having silly fun.
My other nephew was born in the mid80s but he was in a different world. McD ads were frenetic, hectoring -- buy, buy buy! Get out of the house right now and run to McDs for prizes in your happy meal, they will make you break dance with joy! And be sure to make wise guy cracks to your parents and grandparents in order to get them to take you there. All the kids will have this toy and you need it too! You've got to have it! HURRY!

The line was first introduced in 1991 with the McLean Deluxe; the Arch Deluxe was introduced in May 1996 and the others on September 27, 1996. Except for the McLean Deluxe, all sandwiches were developed by McDonald's executive chef Andrew Selvaggio.[4][5]
The McLean Deluxe was marketed as a healthy alternative to McDonald's regular menu. It was released in the United States in 1991. It had a reduced fat content compared to other McDonald's hamburgers. This was achieved through use of 91% lean beef and the addition of carrageenan to the meat. The McLean Deluxe was originally designed as a replacement of the McDLT.[8] Like the McDLT, and despite performing well in taste-tests, it did not sell well and was dropped from the menu in February 1996
by Anonymous | reply 225 | February 2, 2017 10:32 PM |
The Arch Deluxe was another product to compete against the Burger King Whopper sandwich. It had hickory bacon, onions, tomato, ketchup, lettuce, American cheese, and a mustard and mayonnaise based Chef's sauce.[5]

Weird b/c my local McD has a ton of selection. I take my mom every week to get her out of the house, she loves the fries and sweet tea. Seem to recall the fish nuggets were awful, the McRib just nasty. We have plain McChickens here (near Providence). Right now one of the decent newer items are fresh baked muffins, they have a double chocolate one and a cranberry orange that are pretty good with coffee.
And we have sundaes: caramel and hot fudge. had one last summer. They also has cherry pies on occasion though not usually. The standard is apple with pumpkin in the fall and strawberry cream (or whatever that fake filling is) the rest of year. We usually get those small overpriced lobster rolls every summer too.
We had egg nog shakes last holiday and will have Shamrock shakes next month, around St Patrick’s. We have oreo, m&m and Reese’s pb cup McFlurrys all year. Lots of choice.
R101 and everyone else: our local has Hot Mustard sauce. Always has. Stop by.

I wish they carried egg-nog shakes around here... they did one year, and never again. They were awesome.
They only rarely do the shamrock shakes here. Every third year maybe, I see them. It sucks. I love those things.
One year, ages ago (literally decades ago), they did a "wild raspberry" shake. That was phenomenal. Apparently I was the only one that thought so, because I've never seen or heard of it ever again.

R239, they switched from fried to baked pies at some point.
Popeye's still has fried apple pies, if you like them.

Whataburger has fried pies too... love their lemon pies.

I remember working at rubber sole in the village (raver store that no longer exists) I pretty much lived on chicken fajitas and small fries. It was so deleted cloud and satisfying. Fuck you mcdumbass for discontinuing it, I hate all your other shit!

Deleted cloud= delicious * wtf auto correct lol
by Anonymous | reply 244 | February 8, 2017 3:53 AM |
Rubber soul* I also loved the southern style chicken sandwich which came out around 2014 :(

I never understood why the McDLT got such backlash. Crisp, fresh lettuce and tomato? WTF??
by Anonymous | reply 246 | February 8, 2017 4:05 AM |
For fun I'l say the obvious- OP you type fat. Anyway, I'd say the McDLT shoukd come back.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | February 8, 2017 4:57 AM |
The Big 'n Tasty -- oh hell yes. Many a drunk night ended with one of these going in my mouth. If I had been unsuccessful in finding a big dick to go in there instead.
Mc DLT - as close to a classic burger as McDonald's came. The hot stayed hot, and the lettuce/tomato stayed crisp.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I loved the Arch Deluxe. I'd eat at McDonald's more often if they still had that.
Also, the McLean Deluxe wasn't too bad if you added some ketchup and mustard.

R245, they brought the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich back! At least it's been back in my local McDonalds for the last 6-9 months or so. I love it. I just wish it were a bit less expensive.
And yeah, R243, the Chicken Fajitas were awesome. No idea why they dropped them. Everyone I know liked them.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | February 8, 2017 8:52 PM |
Hamburgers that taste and look like meat. How did they fail? When are they coming back? Ditto: dairy/cheese ingredients that taste like cow.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | February 8, 2017 9:16 PM |
Speaking of pies... they did some amazing blueberry pies. And pineapple pies.
by Anonymous | reply 256 | February 8, 2017 11:18 PM |
R45, agree; that was delicious; I used to get it at least once a week - this is c. 9 years ago, and in SF. I LOVED the chicken, the edamame beans, the MANDARIN ORANGES!!, and whatever the particular Newman's Own dressing was.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | February 8, 2017 11:37 PM |
Something - not an exciting choice, but was nice in colder weather - I haven't seen in an McDonald's in a long time, is soup. Perhaps is seasonable? I used to see it on McD's menus in SF, in the early 80's; think I also saw in NYC in the 80's. Anybody else remember them having soup?
by Anonymous | reply 258 | February 8, 2017 11:45 PM |
Hot Side Hot
Cold Side Cold -
McDLT, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 259 | February 8, 2017 11:52 PM |
The McDLT doesn't make any sense anymore. They used to hold food in hot bins, so the McDLT made sense. Now they make sandwiches to order, so there's no point. Plus, they gave up all Styrofoam packaging. Worst part about the McDLT? The cheese was on the COLD side. Bleh. It should have been nice and melty, sitting under the burger on the hot side.
I want them to bring back the 'special shake' flavors though... EVERY McDonalds, rotating through all the special shake flavors every couple of months... Arctic Orange, Shamrock Shakes, Wild Raspberry, Egg Nog shakes, Peppermint shakes.... they had some damn good flavors, and it would add some welcome variety.

They're getting rid of it!
It'll be gone from most stores by the end of May, allegedly (or maybe it was end of June). AUGH!

by Anonymous | reply 273 | April 29, 2017 12:08 AM |
They should just serve vegan and gluten free food and use recyclable/biodegradable containers. They would be packed in no time. Their fries contain both meat byproduct spray and gluten. How on earth do you fuck up potatoes? If they just served rice flour-based tempura veggies, I would eat there every day.

R274: You'll still get fat. What they need to do is replace the seed oils with saturated fats and replace the high-fructose corn syrup with a low-carb low glycemic sweetener. And the meat should be organic and the beef grass-fed, and the breads not made with non-grain flours.
I'd also like to see sweet potato fries as an option.

by Anonymous | reply 288 | May 10, 2017 3:17 PM |
McRib is back right now.
They brought back the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich for a while. I love that thing. So much better than Chick Fil A.
They also did a strawberry cream pie this past summer that was AMAZING. I hope they bring that back again.
Right now though they've brought back the "McPick 2 for $5"... awesome deal!
by Anonymous | reply 289 | December 3, 2017 5:17 AM |
I tried to like McRib but never could stand it. My father and younger brother did, but it wasn't something we could bond over.
I remember liking the pizza the first time I had it in the 90s, and somehow a local manager was authorized to bring it to us at our office, in abundance, after working on local ads for what seemed like weeks of 12 hour days. This included translations, coupons, etc. Our manager promised McD's would give us a bonus for finishing that night, then she went home. The guy showed up about two hours later and it was the best thing We'd ever tasted. We were starving.

They'd be smart to do that and advertise the way Starbucks does when they have a seasonal or limited time drink.
They sell mocha frappes, so they could make a frappe like shake out of anything. Or just call it a frappe instead of a shake. Pumpkin spice frappe, Chocolate mocha candy cane frappe. Strawberry short frappe. Strawberry blueberry frappe at 4th July.

I can't believe that McPizza a.k.a. "beach pizza" actually received votes.

by Anonymous | reply 305 | December 4, 2017 9:59 AM |
Before the personal pizzas (which were inexpensive and good enough for what you paid).... they had a calzone-like thing they called "McPizza". A deep-fried pocket pizza filled with cheese, sauce, and pepperoni. They were AWESOME. But they were only test marketed in Columbus and Dayton and apparently they only sold well at the McDonald's at the Ohio State University campus. Which is where I worked. And I must have eaten a hundred of those things. Cheap and filling and GOOD. Sad they never went nationwide.

We do have some hysterical anti-fast food nutcases here so it's quite possible they saw "McDonalds" and F&Fed the OP over and over.

They did an "Apple pie a la mode" briefly back when they first introduced their baked apple pies (as opposed to the previous fried ones). They put the pie in a long dish, added two swirls of ice-cream, and a drizzle of caramel sundae topping. It was pretty awesome.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | December 16, 2017 4:37 AM |
Before the 'McChicken" became a dollar-value-menu item, it was an actual full-sized chicken sandwich, with a ton of lettuce, mayo, and PICKLES. It was great way back then, very juicy (it was more like a giant chicken nugget than a chicken breast... formed and shaped... but it was delicious and thick and juicy and crispy and wonderful!)
by Anonymous | reply 326 | December 16, 2017 8:05 PM |
Why does the Filet o' Fish cost so fucking much these days? It used to be about the same as a double cheeseburger, but now it's like 4 bucks. And it is a small sandwich, comparatively
by Anonymous | reply 327 | December 16, 2017 8:13 PM |
Probably has something to do with depleting stocks of fish... fish is just getting more expensive. But yeah, it seems WAY too expensive for what it is. It's okay as part of the McPick 2 for $5 though... that makes the cost only $2.50 and that's fairly reasonable.

by Anonymous | reply 334 | June 4, 2018 3:45 AM |
Definitely the McDLT. Now that they make things fresh to order, no need for the 'hot-side/cold-side' nonsense, just make them to order... like a quarter pounder with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and mayo. It'd be awesome. But again, that just gets back to the whole "variations on a quarter pounder with cheese".
