Armistead Maupin

Let's dish. I hear he's a real prick in private unless you're a favorite or he can get something out of you.

He also runs around pleading 'writer's poverty' when he just sold his San Francisco house for millions, has had several of his works go to production and has plenty of appearances. WTF is going on there? Does hos husband still run Pantheon Studios?

by Anonymousreply 18April 18, 2021 9:54 AM

Who cares? Some relic from the 70's who is completely irrelevant today... Found his husband on daddyhunt.com - good lord - tells you everything you need to know right there...

by Anonymousreply 1December 22, 2015 4:16 PM

I think you're onto something, OP. He's the belle of the ball in San Francisco, and came running back from Santa Fe in less than a year.

by Anonymousreply 2December 22, 2015 4:17 PM

I shook his hand at a book signing and it was ice cold and had this waxy, embalmed look.

by Anonymousreply 3December 22, 2015 4:22 PM

Oh, for heaven's sake.

Yes, I'm sure he's a bit of a climber: didn't he start as out as the society columnist for the SF paper?

Like a lot of writers, I'm sure he imagines himself more significant, smarter, and influential than he actually is. Unlike many, he's actually created a handful of popular books that people really loved and that took hold in the public imagination, at least for a while. How many openly gay authors can say that?

Let the old queen have his due.

by Anonymousreply 4December 22, 2015 4:26 PM

gives great oral

by Anonymousreply 5December 22, 2015 4:28 PM

That's the problem, R4. He is due far less than he thinks he is.

And are we really supposed to believe he bagged Rock Hudson?

by Anonymousreply 6December 22, 2015 4:30 PM

he's a dick. talking to him is like getting a sharp-elbow in the ribs

by Anonymousreply 7December 22, 2015 4:31 PM

He is a narcissistic user.

by Anonymousreply 8December 22, 2015 5:34 PM

I do have to give him credit for being the first writer to mention AIDS in a work of fiction. That's something.

But I follow him on Facebook and he's incredibly MEMEMEMEME. I'm a fiction writer too, so I get how you have to self-promote (it's something I really hate about the current state of publishing - especially when potential literary agents are like, "Do you have a strong social media presence?" No, I'm not a fucking Kardashian. I write novels.) But he is just really over-the-top about it sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 9December 22, 2015 5:37 PM

He'll always get a pass from me. I don't know him socially or have to deal with him (if he has an obnoxious personality, etc)

I just know I really enjoyed most of his books.

I wish they'd make a movie of 'Maybe The Moon'.

by Anonymousreply 10December 22, 2015 9:25 PM

He'd probably have been A LOT more wealthy had he written about straight people.

by Anonymousreply 11December 22, 2015 9:28 PM

He sorta did with Night Listener and had a massive best seller and film deal.

by Anonymousreply 12December 22, 2015 10:15 PM

OP, Armistead Maupin is your typical garden variety narcissist; but so is his husband.

I made the mistake of reading his memoir as I did enjoy the first three tales of the city novels, and in it he just shows how he's a user/narcissist and even his own family members find him vindictive.

by Anonymousreply 13January 1, 2021 4:10 AM

What kind of name is Armistice Mowpan?

I just watched the Netflix documentary and found his sister, Jane, very likable. I wonder now if she thinks he's a cunt.

90s is where he went over the top on the smugness but one can blame glaad for most of that.. the mini series expanding his circle with others that survive on their own fumes. swoosie

honestly surprised he's not getting the harvey weinstein/bryan singer treatment

by Anonymousreply 16April 18, 2021 8:03 AM

More than five years later, there are fewer than 20 replies. I wish there were some way to let him know that's how little interest he generates.

by Anonymousreply 17April 18, 2021 8:36 AM

R17 He went with the trannys. Fuck the traitor.
