Julie Wendall and Caleb Snyder. If portmanteaux had been a 1989 thing, would we have called them Jaleb or Culie?
Would we have called them Jaleb or Culie?

Old time soap fans don't combine character names. It's simply not done! Here's an interview with Susan Marie Syder (Julie). When she talked about Michael David Morrison, it made me tear up. I know, MARY! I just adored them so much. I always wanted a guy like Caleb. He was my dream. Not Holden!
My co-star, Michael David Morrison, died from a drug overdose. They replaced him the next day. That was pretty traumatic. The part of me who made "Julie" real, was deeply in love with the part of Michael who played "Caleb." It was very difficult to separate that out.

I had a boyfriend who looked like MDM's twin. First guy to make me cum "no hands."
Of course this was years before I watched ATWT.

Were the Dobsons writing ATWT at this time? Soap pundits help!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 12, 2015 8:48 PM |
I think that is pre-Dobsons. I thought the Dobsons were writing when Tom was Justin Deas.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 12, 2015 9:16 PM |
Here's a trippy interview with Bridget Dobson, who claims that she and Jerry made Guiding Light number 1 and CBS were so disturbed by GL dethroning ATWT that they transferred the Dobsons to World Turns in order to get it back to the top spot!
Needless to say, P&G was happy to have GL the number one rated soap. But there was a problem: it was never anticipated that GL would or could be number one. ATWT was supposed to be #1 because of the way it was positioned in the line up, because of its time slot. It was to be the tent-pole, the lynch-pin. Years of research (and decades of storytelling) supported this. Guiding Light was, at best, supposed to be #2, in part due to trickle-down ratings theory. By bringing GL to #1 we had unwittingly sowed chaos in the corporate world. And GL was #1 for months. Executives were tearing their hair, but being careful not to let the Dobsons know of their concerns (except retrospectively). We were popping champagne corks and they were drinking hemlock .
Simultaneously, it was time for long term story projections (the bibles) to be written for both shows. Jerry and I wrote the GL story projection, and our bosses loved it. The headwriter on ATWT wrote their story projection, and our bosses felt it was inadequate. ATWT's headwriter and the Dobsons were asked to swap shows. (!) They asked us to bring ATWT up to #1, where it had been for so long. There were money issues. And ego issues. And loyalty issues. Another complication was that the headwriter of ATWT was exhausted, didn't like the deal etc.
The upshot was that, after resolving all issues, as we the Dobsons took the helm of ATWT, the other headwriter took over GL - but he insisted on taking a month's vacation before he worked again. So, Jerry and I wrote both shows for one month. Two hours of dramatic air time a day, approximately sixty characters, an average of 200 pages a day, seven days a week. My head hasn’t stopped spinning yet.

So which HW moved from WT to GL?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 12, 2015 9:36 PM |
Marland is who traded with the Dobsons.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 12, 2015 9:45 PM |
And his GL was one of the best GLs, right?
And eventually he brought ATWT back up to number 2, but only for one week, IIRC.

I always thought that the actors who played Caleb and Casey could be brothers.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 12, 2015 11:51 PM |
I remember an article from SOD a few years before MDM's death. It was about him and his wife and how they were "party animals" and that was just the lifestyle they wanted for themselves. He seemed to be a functional alcoholic/drug addict. I think I was only about 9 or10 years old at the time and I thought it was the weirdest thing.
I think they did end up settling down a bit when their son was born, but as sad as it was, it was no surprise he died of an OD while he was with another woman.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 13, 2015 12:56 AM |
How can you be a party animal on the rigorous soap schedule? It catches up with you eventually, especially when there are like 80 pages of dialogue to learn. MDM should never have died, if only he could have known how much he meant to us all. So many male soap actors are just brainless studs, but he had a soulfulness. Oh god, now I'm going to cry.

I've really been enjoying the summer 1989 storylines of World Turns on youtube. Lucinda is trying to get 'that godforsaken kid' Duke back to Seattle and is working with Julie to do a number on him. Julie pretends to be pregnant and then finds out she actually IS pregnant. As always, it's a thrill to watch Liz Hubbard devour every bit of scenery in sight.

Someone mentioned Cady as Rosanna in the previous thread.
I always enjoyed her as Dixie but she was a revelation to me as Rosanna.
She was just excellent.
I sobbed like a ninny when Rosanna's son died and she literally crawled into his empty crib.
Cady's chemistry with Hunt Block was off the chain.
Everyone knows they were fucking in real life and their scenes crackled and popped.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 13, 2015 3:51 AM |
You're right r19. Cady was so different from Yvonne Perry that I thought it would be a huge casting mistake on the Susan Batten-as-Connor level.
But Rosanna had been gone for a few years and Cady really took the character to a different place. And I had no idea she and Hunt Block were fucking. Wow! What a disappointment Jon Lindstrom would be to me after that. Hunt is a sexy man.

Andrew Kavovit was great as teen Paul Ryan. His friendship with Andy Dixon was so authentic.
And in case you were wonder WEHT Andy Kavovit, he was on "Shark Tank" with his young daughter:

You didn't know about Hunt and Cady?
Lord, honey. Hunt was married with kids. They lived in the country and he'd commute to NYC.
Then he took up with Cady and the two of them moved in together in the City.
He and Cady were hot and heavy.
After a 2-3 years they split up and he went back to the wife.
Hunt was the best Craig IMO.
Time moves on. Cady seems blissfully happy with Jon.
Hunt was the best Craig IMO.
He was okay in every other role he had, and in general, I find him a better actor than Scott Bryce, but he never convinced me as Craig Montgomery, particularly in scenes with Lucinda. In those he was outstandingly, obstreperously, ostentatiously wrong.

The thing about Liz Hubbard and Lucinda Walsh was while she had an overwhelming masculine willpower and energy, she still had a woman's needs. She was so much more powerful than Joan Collins as Alexis on Dynasty. So much more.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 13, 2015 2:57 PM |
Everything about Lucinda Walsh was just so intense and overwhelming. It's hard to put her into adequate words. The only two co stars who I felt really held their own against her was Larry Bryggyman and Eileen Fulton. The thing Eileen has is this hilarious girlish and mischievous charm, which was just the perfect counter to Liz's strident and aggressive approach.

Okay, about those classic episodes of World Turns - can somebody please tell me why Lily Walsh was the object of so many men's obsession? In the episodes I'm watching, she's married a broker and the guy doing construction on their cottage is in love with her, meanwhile Caleb was pursuing her and obviously, there was Holden and Dusty, and let's not forget the eventual arrival of Damian. Am I missing any?

by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 13, 2015 7:08 PM |
Yes, Jensen was on ATWT as Vicky. As a ghost she led Jake and Molly to where she had had the twin babies at issue in the clip above.
Spence wanted Lily because he was nuts. Caleb wanted Lily because his brother wanted her. Derek wanted Lily as part of a plot with his father to get her money (but had a change of heart).
Dusty was her puppy love. Holden first hated her, then loved her. Damian loved her, but loved his family more.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 13, 2015 7:32 PM |

Smart fans of AW and ATWT agreed back in 1999 to pretend Vicky and Jake never went to Oakdale.
And r41, "bitch," this is an ATWT thread. GL and AW have their separate threads. A new one about Bert Bauer (GL) and an old one with Therese Lamont's name in it (AW). So stick that up your vagino, "bitch."

Do you think I wanted Jake and Vicky to go to Oakdale? They didn't belong there. I loved how long the scenes were on ATWT/AW/GL during their prime.
The scenes really resonated as opposed to the rapid fire pace of today.
The POV of characters could be explored so much better.

All I remember from the Dobson years was Tom and Margo and Mr. Big...a little Erie and Cricket and Craig and Betsy and Steve.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | October 23, 2015 2:35 AM |
My favorite Tom was Greg Marxx. He was elegant, dashing, kind, clever, masculine, reliable. I always wondered why I was so drawn to him as a little boy, and found him so deeply attractive. I recently discovered he's gay. Maybe I had a sense for one of my own. It's all so wonderfully mysterious, the gay psyche, isn't it?
by Anonymous | reply 141 | October 23, 2015 2:42 AM |
I also think Douglas Marland adds credence to the theory about creative genius and homosexuality. His female characters were so rich, his understanding about human nature so deep and dynamic, he was so deeply symapthetic to male characters and the torment of the heterosexual male subject trying to live up to his own expectations... all of this done in a way only a deeply sensitive artist with homosexual inclinations can understand.

R136 That was not a publicly known thing, but she was at the very beginnings of it when the show ended, which was why her screen time was so seriously curtailed. At that time it was chalked up to age, but about a year or so later she stopped doing some of her singing appearances and withdrew from social media, and a few of the NYC folks I knew who worked at the shows said that was why.
I don't think it's seriously advanced, she still has some level of lucidity, but she has help, I would imagine. Not an issue for a standard 80-something lady, but not a condition where one can sing old cabaret standards or do three days of shows in one taping.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | October 23, 2015 3:18 AM |
R137 The fact that Liz never won for Lucinda is the second most egregious Daytime Emmy oversight/snub of all time.
Surpassed in my book only by the fact that somehow, Beverlee McKinsey, the most divine actress ever, NEVER got a nomination. (Hubbard at least won for Althea, another great role, on The Doctors.)

The 1989 ATWT playlist stops before Caleb and Julie get together. I'm pretty depressed about that. I would love somebody to upload the whole storyline. Michael David Morrison and Susan Marie Snyder were two very captivating actors. Julie's pairing with Andy is painful to watch. He's such a whiny little jerk of a kid, I simply can't stand watching him in these episodes (he falls off the wagon too). I just need my Juleb fix!
by Anonymous | reply 156 | October 23, 2015 9:06 PM |

r156, AsTheWorldStillTurns is posting new stuff almost every day on Youtube, and if that continues, Caleb and Julie aren't too far off.
I have to disagree with you about the Julie/Andy pairing, though. It was well worth it for the way John and Kim completely freaked out and both of their families and marriages were impacted. There's a great scene in the Hugheses' living room where Julie's abortion is brought up, and Nancy LITERALLY drops her jaw and clutches her pearls.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | October 23, 2015 9:14 PM |
I know, the storyline Marland devised on paper reads well but Scott DeFrates is just not selling the storyline r158. I really am not convinced that Julie could fall in love with this possessive and sulky teenager. In contrast, I'm adoring the actor Andrew K who plays Paul and his infatuation for Emily, which is so believable and beautifully played.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | October 23, 2015 9:56 PM |
Marland weaved such an intricate tapestry that so many variations of storyline were possible to him. He was truly powerful. I am currently watching Lisa and Julie's friendship blossoming and saintly Lien looking on jealously. It was by setting up moments like this that Marland could entertain whether or not he wanted to further examine what was merely being suggested. But it was brilliant.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | October 23, 2015 10:05 PM |
Another delicious moment. Lisa and Julie are chattering away and Julie says sweetly, 'I've never had a real girlfriend before', then Lisa goes up to Bob and Kim and says, 'I love that girl, she has spunk' and Kim shoots Lisa the look of death.

The episodes I'm watching, Heather Rattray has come on as Lily Walsh. It makes me wonder who else could have played the role. I would have loved to have seen Kristian Alfonso as a recast Lily. She had left Days around the same time Martha left World Turns. Really, the characters are pretty much interchangeable. Snotty rich kid meets local rough boy. I also would have liked Robin Christopher to have played Frannie because she's similar to Julianne Moore. It's weird seeing a blonde Frannie.

Because the show had already been ruined beyond repair by that point, R183. Nothing would ever bring it back. Certainly not Kuntie Perretti.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | October 29, 2015 2:55 PM |
Because by that time the show was all Katie, all the time, sadly. Teri Conn is a good actress (which she proved during the Brad Dies storyline), but I hate where they took the character and the amount of airtime she got.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | October 29, 2015 3:07 PM |
The EP Goutman declared that Katie was the "sweetheart" of the show in one of his last TV Guide interviews before the show ended. That's why everything was about her (including Chris getting Reid Oliver's heart) so she would have a happy ending. However, they should've brought back Simon for that instead of having that actor from GL play Chris for a few months.

I've been a fan ever since he was ATWT's Rod Landry.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | November 5, 2015 8:12 AM |
Fichtner pulled off the almost-impossible in making Landry a sympathetic character. The reaction of the Snyder family to his long-ago rape of Iva was so realistic: rage, tolerance, and everything in between. A perfect example of how Marland used gray areas to force his characters into constant self-examination. Is it okay to forgive? Do I deserve love? What is a family?
by Anonymous | reply 212 | November 5, 2015 2:41 PM |
How did Rod Landry turn into Josh Snyder? That was a little before my time.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | November 5, 2015 3:21 PM |
r213, he changed his name to Rod Landry in young adulthood because of his shame over his (legally unpunished) crime. So to people like Betsy Stewart and her family, he was "Rod," but to the Snyders and their friends he was still "Josh."

Bad News Update for Nathaniel Marston

He quit breathing twice.
He's still requiring a ventilator.

According to his mother the doctors presented him with that choice.
Even though he was on a vent and unable to speak he "communicated" to them he wanted everything done.
This was the day after the accident.
Now his mom says they're having difficulty waking him up post surgery.
It's really tragic.

Margo's elder son was Adam, R219, who was played by Craig Lawlor, Matthew J. Morrison, Matt Cavenaugh, and Tom Degnan, none of whom is listed in IMDB's credits for CHICAGO MED?
Could you be talking about Will Munson, Hal and Barbara's son, played by Jesse Lee Soffer? He plays Detective Jay Halstead on CHICAGO P.D. Jay's brother, Will Halstead, is a doctor on CHICAGO MED. He's played by Nick Gehlfuss, who looks a lot like Jesse Soffer. Here's a pic of them both. Jesse is second in from the left, Nick is on the right.

And I turn around and its Kathleen Widdows(Emma Synder) She was a character. So funny and so nice. She told me how she got in trouble one time for kissing Jon Hensley on the mouth in a scene. I said who could blame you and she laughed. Again a treat to run into her.

I believe they are the stars but it's an ensemble show.
Martha says she wrote the role especially for EH.

Ugh. I can remember receiving an email alert at work from some entertainment website announcing it. I knew it had to happen (the show was so awful by that time and had been for a few years), but it still upset me.

I was at work when it was announced. I knew it was coming and had just watched GL die, after becoming very involved with THAT show...so we kinda all knew.
Still sad, though. Though ATWT really sucked at the end. Fucking Katie Peretti's snatch.

His mom asked her to post it.

It's a beautiful eulogy.

by Anonymous | reply 264 | December 13, 2015 4:03 PM |
r264, they were on and off from the mid-Eighties until Hal died. Jennifer was conceived by Barbara and Darryl Crawford in an adulterous affair, but was raised as Hal's child. Will, born several years later, was the biological son of both Barbara and Hal.

I know no one remembered Glynnis O'Connor as Dee Stewart by then, but she was also just too damn short to be Margo. Just like Lindsay Frost was too tall for Betsy. It isn't enough to look like the previous actor.
by Anonymous | reply 269 | December 13, 2015 10:58 PM |
Lindsay Frost was about a million times better as Betsy than that whiny baby Meg Ryan. I didn't even mind the height thing, because it felt appropriate-- like Betsy had *finally* grown up.

Was he? Is it known what his plans were? Bad Linc and Iva were gone by the end of the year, and bad Margo only a little while later. Of course KMH as Emily stayed on and became a cornerstone of the show.
I'm curious about what he wanted to change.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | December 14, 2015 2:04 AM |
Doug said he had gotten too far away from the core families. His last major moves included bringing Lily back with Damien. I am fairly sure he wrote the end to the Debbie, Hutch, Linc group before he died.

Carly was after Marland's death.
by Anonymous | reply 274 | December 14, 2015 2:59 PM |
That doesn't surprise me, R274.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | December 14, 2015 3:03 PM |
Glynnis O'Connor couldn't handle the pace of the hour ATWT after doing movies, tv movies for years. You either sink or swim and she had the smarts to realize that. She also had trouble playing 'tough' as Margo after Margaret Colin and Hilary Bailey Smith. Ellen Dolan who I would never have taken for 'tough' either, made it work for her.
by Anonymous | reply 276 | December 14, 2015 3:30 PM |
Did Marland have any input when it came to recasts? Linc #2 was so awful and unsexy - a big departure from Linc #1 James Wlcek, who I've always read here was a Marland favorite.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | December 14, 2015 3:45 PM |
Any truth to the rumor that Carly Tenney was in the story outlines bible that Marland left behind? Apparently in early 1993, he had written projections for well into 1995.
by Anonymous | reply 278 | December 14, 2015 4:50 PM |
Rosanna was a Marland creation and all the seeds for Carly were already in place with Marland. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Rosanna-Mike-Carly was in his outlines to replace the Debbie-Linc-Hutch stuff. He certainly had the Orlena story outlined and the malpractice suit outlined...though those both went off the rails without him to follow through.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | December 14, 2015 9:02 PM |
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Rosanna-Mike-Carly was in his outlines
You know Mike was. Remember his first scene, carrying the tire, shirtless, like that exceptionally hot tyre guy who was gaybashed to death (UK, IIRC, on account of "tyre"). No surprise that Andy's seeming obsession with Mike came from the pen of a gay male. Andy-Mike-Rosanna would have been such a better story than Rosanna-Mike-Imitation Janet Leigh.
He certainly had the Orlena story outlined
Really? Poisoned lemon drops (or was it postage stamps?) came from Mr. Marland? Was he becoming Alzheimers-y?
and the malpractice suit outlined...though those both went off the rails without him to follow through.
Orlooney [italic]began[/italic] off the rails. Lisa suing John? Andy being forced to testify against his father? That was as good as soap opera got.

I never liked Rosanna until Cady played her (the other actress acted like she was constipated or something). I thought she was great with Craig. I'm watching the 1990's eps on YouTube also (thank you, AsTheWorldStillTurns!!!) and my God was that soap at its very finest. Even the characters I hadn't remembered as being very interesting are fascinating to me now. Sean and Frannie had wonderful chemistry-- they should have done a lot more with both actors. (Plus it's really fun watching Lily go after Sean.) Blake and Jessica, too. They were just hanging out at Jess' and the conversation turned to how painful it was that people in their lives thought that they were "trying to be white" just because they were ambitious and successful. These are the kinds of conversations you NEVER see on soaps anymore, and it's why no one watches.

I remember the big build-up for Sierra before she ever appeared on the screen. Lucinda always talked about how brave she was during the revolution, blah, blah, blah. R358, I agree about the 'abandoning'; previously, it was written (at least I read it as) she 'deserved' to be left, which she did not. Nor did she deserve to be cheated and certainly not given the cancer via the cheating.
People can be team Colleen or team Hillary (I think one of Margo's slaps was as real as possible); people are both good and bad; no one is always good.
I think we can all agree that when CZ and HBS were on screen together it was magic.

R376 There are multiple anti-Bev trolls on the AW thread. I can see ripping Colleen for her personal conduct with STI king, Pinter. Maybe she was a back stabbing cunt.Otherwise she did a nice job on the show. She also remained quite attractive throughout the years.

It seems like an endless list of people that Colleen had conflict with. Hmmm, seems like Colleen is the common denominator. She's obviously the one who had issues, beginning with her cheating ways.

R379 I would've watched that. With Richard and the long-scarfed professor, there were at least 5 gay men in Oakdale. And ex-step-grandpa Brian could come back to town to make it an even number!

So I'm to believe some hated Zenk because she and Grant had an affair, fell in love, divorced spouses and got married?
Some may not have approved but it wasn't some fling. They were together for almost 2 decades.
I'm confident 99.9% got over it and accepted it. Only a wingnut or a personal friend of the spouses would hang on to that.

by Anonymous | reply 388 | February 26, 2016 4:48 PM |
Zenk did seem to get along well with all the kids offset. The fact that she did not get along with some women who were not on the show all that long and were competing with her for screentime in their age bracket...and she survived them all indicates to me that Colleen wasn't the problem.

Martha Byrne's Lily played into the frau fantasy of being romantically pursued by hot guys. No way someone like Martha Byrne would have attracted a Jon Hensley or Brian Bloom or Paolo Sergente IRL.

Um, she did sleep with Segante in real life, so...
by Anonymous | reply 396 | February 28, 2016 2:30 PM |
They made Lily more dowdy than they needed to later, but I think Martha Byrne was attractive, and had that all-american girl look when first involved with Holden. TV and movies are all about someone getting the fantasy mate -- look at all the average to below average looking men who had the knock-out love interest. It was a requirement for CBS sitcoms for awhile.
Not many romantic interests would be a match for Hensley at the peak of his hotness (except for maybe Brian Bloom or Paolo Sergente).

I just watched the episode with Casey's wake. So many things in this that show Marland's brilliance. First, he delayed Casey's death so the audience would have time to get used to Ellen Dolan as Margo. Casey's parents were already real characters even though they lived out of town. Everyone's reaction is different and completely rooted in their histories (including Lien's Buddhism!). And Doug brought Josh and Meg back for the funeral (because Meg had trained as a nurse under Lyla, of course) and Meg had (justified) suspicions about her sister-in-law Julie (who she was just meeting for the first time). We didn't see them, but everyone was talking about Bob and Kim and Susan, who Tom reported all came to the wake, though Susan cleared out before Bob and Kim got there.
So good!

People talk about "umbrella stories" now, but ATWT back then WAS an umbrella, all the time, continuously, for years on end. And that's what it takes to make a great soap.
by Anonymous | reply 401 | February 28, 2016 9:51 PM |
Agree. That's why I switched from the ABC soaps all those years ago to watch ATWT, because it was an ensemble, not a show putting a lot of its efforts into a character (Erica Kane) or couple (Luke and Laura).
Then ATWT turned into the "Carly" show and kept many characters in little bubbles with few interactions with members of their own family or long-time friends....any attempts at an umbrella story failed....no wonder the show tanked.

Martha Byrne's greatest life achievement as landing Paolo Segante in real life. She was cute at best and he was hot. She must have been an acrobat in bed. I had a good looking friend who was with a bland looking woman. He told me that in the sack she was every man's fantasy.
PS and MB still remain friends after their marriages and the like. I wonder if she ever blows him for old time's sake.

"Then ATWT turned into the "Carly" show and kept many characters in little bubbles with few interactions with members of their own family or long-time friends....any attempts at an umbrella story failed...."
IMO, they did do *one* great umbrella story during those later years: the Jennifer/Gwen baby switch. Almost every single character was involved in some way, and Jennifer Landon, Jennifer Ferrin, Ben Hendrickson, Colleen Zenk, Michael Park, Jesse Soffer, and-- yes-- Maura West did amazing work. The writers and actors made one of soap's most eye-rolling cliches fresh and heartbreaking.

by Anonymous | reply 413 | March 2, 2016 8:40 PM |
I have to seriously question the taste level of anyone who thinks the baby switch storyline was good. Even though the actors did their best to sell it, it was total garbage and obviously a ripoff of the far more successful and entertaining AMC storyline. I don't deify Marland the way others do, but it would've been 100x better under his pen.

"I don't deify Marland the way others do, but it would've been 100x better under his pen."
Well, obviously. I do worship Marland, and yes, overall the show was "shit" in its last years. I praised one story, not the show as a whole. I hate what they did to it.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | March 2, 2016 9:29 PM |
"Lisa sues John; Andy is forced to testify against his father" was the only post-Marland story that worked. Richard Culliton was listed as headwriter.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | March 2, 2016 9:31 PM |
Say what you want about Goutman and Passanante, but ATWT was the only one of the more recently cancelled shows (talking about GL, AMC, OLTL, AW) that did not gut its core. Whether that was them or P&G, the show was at least recognizable when it went off the air.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | March 2, 2016 9:33 PM |
Maybe, R417, if you started watching in 1995.
Post-Marland, Lucinda was defanged by having her make up with Holden, absolutely destroying the character. Lisa disappeared nearly completely. The cunt brigade fired Andy Dixon. And where was Emma, at Janie Porter's every day?
And worst of all, the show was turned into As the World Turns around Carly Tenney.
Please, spare us any further analysis.
by Anonymous | reply 418 | March 2, 2016 9:41 PM |
I would add to r418:
1. Kim Hughes, once the host of the classy "Patterns" talk show, was turned into a purveyor of reality-TV sleaze, urging Katie Peretti to get as down and dirty as possible for ratings. Kim Hughes would never do this.
2. Lyla Peretti was turned into a cruel, overbearing mother who forced her child-- Katie Peretti-- to compete in degrading child pageants. Lyla Peretti would never do this.
3. Nancy Hughes was turned into a "mentor" and BFF to-- you guessed it!-- Katie Peretti, even after Katie falsely accused her grandson of rape, then lied about a hit-and-run accident that could have killed Nancy. Nancy Hughes would never do this.
Now what was that you were saying about the show revolving around Carly?

In an interview a few years back, William Fichtner who played Josh Snyder made fun of Doug's writing. He was asked about his time on the show, and he said that soap writing is awful and joked that his character was all fucked up because he had killed a dog or something.

by Anonymous | reply 424 | March 3, 2016 12:27 AM |
Lyla was gone by 95, yes, I thinks he left in 94 when Craig came back, but Sward came back for a few shows circa 2000 to work with Katie; She looked great; wished she had been back for more.
at least GL did its best to give happy endings all around: Ed and Holly (no Roger!) off on a cruise; Phillip and Beth married, Rick and Mindy about to be married; Josh and Reva together -- ATWT gave NOTHING to Lisa. And Noelle Beck offered to step aside and let Miss Martha come back and finish up Lily, but TPTB never made that happen.
Btw, does anyone know if Sward's singing is on CD? I'd love to get a copy of 'I Think That they're Playing Our Song'
by Anonymous | reply 425 | March 3, 2016 12:52 AM |
"Lyla Peretti was gone by 1995, wasn't she?"
She came back a few times as a prop to show how "emotionally abused" Katie had been by Lyla. Never mind that we'd watched Lyla for years and had never seen her be anything but a caring, down-to-earth mother. Who knows why Anne Sward agreed to do it? She doesn't seem to need money. I would've told them to go to hell.

ATWT didn't use Eileen Fulton much because she kept plugging up the studios toilet. I don't know what Eileen's diet was, but, whew, the stink that came from her bowels! ATWT never wanted her in the studio much because she kept plugging up the shitter. True story.

That whole storyline of Josh/Lily/Iva was just spectacular.

And Josh's issues weren't based on the death of his dog (WTF??).
He had been physically and sexually abused as a child.

R420, I'm sure if you ever talked to Fitchner one on one, he'd have some nice things to say about ATWT.
I find that talent tends to respond to the reporter asking the question: You were on a SOAP? REALLY? Then, the talent speaks disparagingly.
But if it were asked: "Wow, you were on one of the best soaps during one of the best writing eras ever! Did you like it?" He'd respond differently.
by Anonymous | reply 436 | March 4, 2016 1:41 AM |
r436, I don't know about that. Some actors just look down on the genre, no matter how well-written the show. Look at Larry Bryggman. He would constantly put down soaps. He recounted a story of a lunch meeting he had with some P&G bigwig in the early 70s in which he complained about the writing and ways to improve it. The P&G guy essentially said their objective is to sell laundry detergent to housewives and that the writing didn't have to be any good. And this was when ATWT was the golden child and #1 in the ratings! The only time I ever heard him say something nice was when he was the best actor Emmy circa 1987 and he praised the hard-working cast. I think he appreciated his fellow actors, and I know he took Scott DeFreitas under his wing, but I think he ALWAYS felt the writing was just inferior. Probably the same thing with Fichtner.

Marland did the murder trial with a mother/daughter angle 3 different times: Lesley/Laura on GH; Jennifer/Amanda on GL; and Kim/Frannie on ATWT.
On GH, Laura accidentally killed older lover David Hamilton after he taunted her, saying Lesley was the one who really 'turned him on.' Lesley came upon the scene (Laura blacked out the memory of the deed for a while) and decided to take the blame. The D.A. found a portion of a ripped up love letter that said 'nor Rick must ever find out about our love' (something like that). The D.A. presented it at trial and Lesley confessed to spare Laura.
On GL, Jennifer killed Lucille in self-defense. Amanda didn't know she was Jen's daughter; Mike Bauer put the pieces together and it came out at the second trial, causing Amanda to miscarry Ben's baby.
On ATWT, Marland really perfected the story. Kim came into a room and saw dead Doug on top of Frannie, assumed that Frannie had stabbed him to death with the crystal cylinder (great choice of weapon!) and lied that she had done to save Frannie from being raped. Doug being impotent and the entry wounds didn't match Kim's story, however. At trial, Frannie recalled that Doug had been killed by Marsha Talbot.
Doug Marland was brilliant; he knew kids watching soaps were lucky to get 'don't slam the door' from their parents. When they watched his stories, kids saw parents who really cared for their kids.

by Anonymous | reply 467 | March 6, 2016 6:43 PM |
Yes, Liz Hubbard was a scenery chewing ham in the Kim Zimmer vein but you need those types, just as you need the Kathy Hays and the Maureen Garretts in contrast.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | March 6, 2016 6:48 PM |
Ms. Hubbard acted like that because Lucinda was a larger than life character. If you watch her performances on the Doctors, you will see her as Dr. Althea Davis playing very quiet, very nuanced scenes beautifully, and you can't take your eyes off of her. I can't imagine what Doctors fans thought after seeing her play that to watch her as Lucinda Walsh since most soap actors play the same type of character from show to show. The two characters are night and day.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | March 6, 2016 7:15 PM |
She could be OTT as Althea too. However, The Doctors, especially in its earlier years, had a highly theatrical quality that went well with Hubbard's stagey acting. I have to say that she had more chemistry with her ATWT leading men like Bryggman, Bryce, and Wiggin than she did with the guy who played Nick Bellini on The Doctors have seen some eps on retro and I really don't see any chemistry.

A lot of people had Zenk atop a short list as a replacement for Jess Walton when Walton hit a contract negotiation snag a few years ago. Zenk could've brought back the character's raw sexuality reminiscent of Brenda Dickson that Walton was never really able to conjure. A sexy Jill would be a major player on today Y&R if Zenk had taken the role.
by Anonymous | reply 481 | March 7, 2016 6:10 PM |
Saw an episode of ATWT where Zenk was listed as Colleen Zenk Crouch. Just how many times has she cheated/spread those legs? Sounds like her life is a better soap opera than old Babsy on World Turns.

James Douglas, who played Grant Coleman, has died at 86:
by Anonymous | reply 489 | March 18, 2016 9:42 PM |
RIP James. I always thought they should've made Henry as Grant's son or grandson, which would have allowed James to easily slip back onto the canvas near the end of the show's run to reunite with Lisa. That would've given Eileen Fulton the send-off she so deserved.
by Anonymous | reply 490 | March 18, 2016 9:55 PM |
I wonder how many of these former soap stars still jones to get any role that opens up on the few soaps that are left. Must be depressing.
by Anonymous | reply 491 | March 18, 2016 9:57 PM |
One time Grant came back was for ATWT's 30th and he had brief interaction with Lisa who was dating Earl at the time.
I believe Harding Lemay really liked having him on AW as Elliot Carrington; he referred later -- not by name -- to an actor who left the show and was hired for more money on another P&G show. That fits with the time he became Grant on ATWT. Here's a scene from 50 years of Soaps featuring Eileen and James and the great bitch who played Joyce.
by Anonymous | reply 492 | March 19, 2016 4:31 AM |
I always thought Grant was Lisa's true love (not counting Bob).
They should have definitely brought him back for a few days at the end.
Grant could have swept Lisa off her feet and they could have left on an around the world trip.

Watched ORDINARY PEOPLE on encore Saturday evening and caught Elizabeth Hubbard's name in the end credit scroll but never noticed her while watching the movie, so rewound through it and caught her in the party scene. There was never a clear shot of her from the front, just from the side, and I believe she only had one line, so I found it odd she was listed in the end credits along with others who had a more substantial part.

Yeah, if Breen really wants to peddle the "I was fired" story he is in for a world of lawsuits.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | March 27, 2016 2:30 PM |
I only heard recently that Breen wasn't fired -- that he chose to leave. I'm open to that being the truth. Who knows? I wouldn't have given up a job that paid and had healthcare, however.
R499, the Thanksgiving miracle of Sierra's return was brilliant. Having her presumed dead opened up opportunities story-wise for Craig; once his portrayer, the marvelous Scott Bryce, chose to leave the show it was ideal to bring Sierra (Finn Carter) back to usher him off the canvas.
The episode prior to this -- Lucinda seeing Sierra alive was one of my favorites. I swear Liz Hubbard is adlibbing questions to Finn in character about where she's been and I see Finn keeping pace nicely coming up with answers. I think she was one of the actresses who handled Liz's adlibs much better than others did.
Weekly spilled the beans about a proposed storyline on ‘World Turns. Lisa Brown had gotten wind that the Snyder farm was going to burn down and, thinking that the Snyders were going to be written off, hit the panic button and leaked the info to Weekly, which ran it. Ironically, the plan had been to bring the far-flung Snyder characters back to the show. But, Laurie Caso was so pissed he killed the story.

by Anonymous | reply 530 | April 4, 2016 11:30 PM |
R530
She's a supporting character.
She didn't enter the show until probably the third episodes.
Bobby Canavale and Olivia Wilde are the leads.
They're married and he runs a record company in the 70s
Annie plays an old lover of Canavale. She works for a rival record company and he woos her away from there by offering her a partnership in his company.
Annie looks amazing and her character is really dynamic.
Really good show.

by Anonymous | reply 534 | April 6, 2016 3:34 AM |
I don't think it's ever been specified publicly, R534, but I know that Doug also was going to woo Jeanne Cooper away from Y&R to play Jane's mother. THAT combo would have been amazing.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | April 6, 2016 2:50 PM |
God Bless, Jeanne and God rest her soul, but was Doug really going to make room for her on ATWT?
He already had Hubbard, Hays, Widdoes, Patsy Bruder was still popping up...and of course, Miss Lisa - Eileen Fulton herself!
Jeanne wasn't being used a lot in the early 90s; I think she had committed a big no-no by talking about the Braeden/Bergman fight (Eric attacking Peter) on a CBS news program around the Emmys and TPTB were pissed she opened her mouth.
But Jeanne was a smart cookie; she would know to stick with a long term thing at Y&R rather than jump ship.
by Anonymous | reply 536 | April 6, 2016 4:55 PM |
Yeah, I can't imagine Jeanne would have liked ATWT very much, she would have been one of many. And she would have likely been a short term character, running a year or two.
Still, a delicious idea.
by Anonymous | reply 537 | April 6, 2016 5:24 PM |
Jeanne claimed that she wanted to leave Y&R for ATWT, because working on the latter would allow her to go back to the stag/Broadway. That's what she said, don't shoot the messenger.

Mary Kay Adams said once people in show biz say all the time 'oh, yeah, I'll create a part for you' and that Marland said that to her once at a P&G party; she was very pleased when he actually came through with Neal Alcott; I'm not sure if the original plan was for Neal to be killed off, which happened around the time Marland died.
His death really was the end of ATWT.

Mary Kay never should have left ATWT; as Lucinda's sister, she had YEARS in her and in that role.
She never should have left GL either. India would have stayed till the end and we might have been spared (God Bless her) Marj's heavy wheezing "ALLLANNN!"
I say 'never,' but hey, it's her life. she can do whatever she wants. I just really liked her acting.
India's last scene with Phillip was nice; it showed they'd developed a friendship of sorts; she still loved him. He accepted her. She says "I could Olivia a run for her money" - that simple line had so many levels.
The producers and writers were nuts not to go for more with her, but if she didn't want to stay...
I hear she teaches sign language now.
by Anonymous | reply 553 | April 15, 2016 1:09 AM |
Mary Kay was and is fabulous. I agree, India had so much life in her, and we didn't even know who Neal was.
As much as I loved the whole Liz Hubbard/Mary Kay/Terry Lester thing on screen, the chemistry of the three of them, I'm not really sure I ever "got" why that storyline came to be. Or just got "it" in general. I mean, yes, I understood the story. But some of it just didn't click for me. And sad that almost everyone except for her darling Lily (and Sierra) seemed to slip away from Lucinda.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | April 15, 2016 1:30 AM |
I think the power of the Neal Alcott character was that she was like an angel on this earth, seemingly a perfect person, and as such she could not have stayed long. Her function was to change Lucinda's nature and make her more lovable. It would have been wonderful to have MKA do both P&G soaps simultaneously and have the characters flit in and out of the shows. Maybe they could have turned out to be twins, or would that have been too absurd? India would have been horrified if her natural birth mother was poverty stricken.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | April 15, 2016 1:53 AM |
on paper, Lester, Adams and Hubbard sounds like GOLD and maybe it was Doug's death, which happened around this time, but something about the storyline never took off for me, either.
I so wish Mary Kay had stayed at GL; it would have been great if her birth mother had popped up. (Faye Dunaway in stunt casting?)
The Spauldings went through SO many recasts -- there were three Alans, four Alexandras (if you count Lydia Brice), four Alan-Michaels, two Amandas, two Phillips (or, as I like to say, there was just one, sorry John!),
by Anonymous | reply 556 | April 15, 2016 6:13 AM |
Mary Kay as Neal was fucking wonderful. She had a lovely relationship with Lucinda and a fun romance with Scott. The problems were that Terry Lester was not clicking with/against Lucinda or with a recast Emily. Royce should have died and Neal stayed on. But Mary Kay wanted out, Breen checked out, and Marland died.

Ellen Dolen always gave off a lesbian vibe to me but I'm pretty sure she's straight.
I saw a HGTV episode last year and Ellen, her husband and daughter were wanting to sell their NYC loft.
She and her hubby were funny and demonstrative with each other.
They were selling to move to the country.
I also caught an episode where nuLily (Noelle) was charged with selling her parents' pied a terre in the Gramercy Hotel.
Very nice digs but in the end they opted not to sell.

Met Michael David Morrison at a gay bar in NYC in spring of 1990. We spent a memorable night at the Helmsley Windsor Hotel where I was staying while in the city. Didn't know he was on a soap until he said, the next morning, that he needed to hurry to the studio because he was shooting that day. I joked, "...last night's shooting didn't count?" A few weeks later he accompanied me to Radio City Music Hall for "Night of 100 Stars 3" (May of 1990). We stayed in touch intermittently and it was only later I learned that he was married. He had a son later on and I sent a card and gift to them. He was sweet, funny, very sexy and endowed, and also seemed troubled. The third time we met, he struck me as someone floundering in the ocean, desperately trying to grab a life preserver. He died way too young.
