Would we have called them Jaleb or Culie?

Julie Wendall and Caleb Snyder. If portmanteaux had been a 1989 thing, would we have called them Jaleb or Culie?

by Anonymousreply 590December 21, 2020 3:11 AM

Old time soap fans don't combine character names. It's simply not done! Here's an interview with Susan Marie Syder (Julie). When she talked about Michael David Morrison, it made me tear up. I know, MARY! I just adored them so much. I always wanted a guy like Caleb. He was my dream. Not Holden!
My co-star, Michael David Morrison, died from a drug overdose. They replaced him the next day. That was pretty traumatic. The part of me who made "Julie" real, was deeply in love with the part of Michael who played "Caleb." It was very difficult to separate that out.

I had a boyfriend who looked like MDM's twin. First guy to make me cum "no hands."

Of course this was years before I watched ATWT.

I think that is pre-Dobsons. I thought the Dobsons were writing when Tom was Justin Deas.

by Anonymousreply 5October 12, 2015 9:16 PM

Here's a trippy interview with Bridget Dobson, who claims that she and Jerry made Guiding Light number 1 and CBS were so disturbed by GL dethroning ATWT that they transferred the Dobsons to World Turns in order to get it back to the top spot!
Needless to say, P&G was happy to have GL the number one rated soap. But there was a problem: it was never anticipated that GL would or could be number one. ATWT was supposed to be #1 because of the way it was positioned in the line up, because of its time slot. It was to be the tent-pole, the lynch-pin. Years of research (and decades of storytelling) supported this. Guiding Light was, at best, supposed to be #2, in part due to trickle-down ratings theory. By bringing GL to #1 we had unwittingly sowed chaos in the corporate world. And GL was #1 for months. Executives were tearing their hair, but being careful not to let the Dobsons know of their concerns (except retrospectively). We were popping champagne corks and they were drinking hemlock .
Simultaneously, it was time for long term story projections (the bibles) to be written for both shows. Jerry and I wrote the GL story projection, and our bosses loved it. The headwriter on ATWT wrote their story projection, and our bosses felt it was inadequate. ATWT's headwriter and the Dobsons were asked to swap shows. (!) They asked us to bring ATWT up to #1, where it had been for so long. There were money issues. And ego issues. And loyalty issues. Another complication was that the headwriter of ATWT was exhausted, didn't like the deal etc.
The upshot was that, after resolving all issues, as we the Dobsons took the helm of ATWT, the other headwriter took over GL - but he insisted on taking a month's vacation before he worked again. So, Jerry and I wrote both shows for one month. Two hours of dramatic air time a day, approximately sixty characters, an average of 200 pages a day, seven days a week. My head hasn’t stopped spinning yet.

So which HW moved from WT to GL?

by Anonymousreply 7October 12, 2015 9:36 PM

Marland is who traded with the Dobsons.

by Anonymousreply 8October 12, 2015 9:45 PM

And his GL was one of the best GLs, right?

And eventually he brought ATWT back up to number 2, but only for one week, IIRC.

by Anonymousreply 9October 12, 2015 11:34 PM

I always thought that the actors who played Caleb and Casey could be brothers.

by Anonymousreply 10October 12, 2015 11:51 PM

I remember an article from SOD a few years before MDM's death. It was about him and his wife and how they were "party animals" and that was just the lifestyle they wanted for themselves. He seemed to be a functional alcoholic/drug addict. I think I was only about 9 or10 years old at the time and I thought it was the weirdest thing.

I think they did end up settling down a bit when their son was born, but as sad as it was, it was no surprise he died of an OD while he was with another woman.

by Anonymousreply 11October 13, 2015 12:56 AM

How can you be a party animal on the rigorous soap schedule? It catches up with you eventually, especially when there are like 80 pages of dialogue to learn. MDM should never have died, if only he could have known how much he meant to us all. So many male soap actors are just brainless studs, but he had a soulfulness. Oh god, now I'm going to cry.

by Anonymousreply 12October 13, 2015 1:05 AM

I've really been enjoying the summer 1989 storylines of World Turns on youtube. Lucinda is trying to get 'that godforsaken kid' Duke back to Seattle and is working with Julie to do a number on him. Julie pretends to be pregnant and then finds out she actually IS pregnant. As always, it's a thrill to watch Liz Hubbard devour every bit of scenery in sight.

by Anonymousreply 17October 13, 2015 3:11 AM

R11

He was with another woman when he OD'd ??

I'd never heard that part.

Damn! That would be a hard pill (pardon the pun) to swallow.

by Anonymousreply 18October 13, 2015 3:45 AM

Someone mentioned Cady as Rosanna in the previous thread.

I always enjoyed her as Dixie but she was a revelation to me as Rosanna.

She was just excellent.

I sobbed like a ninny when Rosanna's son died and she literally crawled into his empty crib.

Cady's chemistry with Hunt Block was off the chain.

Everyone knows they were fucking in real life and their scenes crackled and popped.

by Anonymousreply 19October 13, 2015 3:51 AM

You're right r19. Cady was so different from Yvonne Perry that I thought it would be a huge casting mistake on the Susan Batten-as-Connor level.

But Rosanna had been gone for a few years and Cady really took the character to a different place. And I had no idea she and Hunt Block were fucking. Wow! What a disappointment Jon Lindstrom would be to me after that. Hunt is a sexy man.

by Anonymousreply 20October 13, 2015 4:27 AM

Who were Bridget and Michelle's parents, Jake and Vicky? And they died? Why would Molly get their kids?

by Anonymousreply 21October 13, 2015 4:30 AM

Molly was their stepmom, she was married to Jake.

by Anonymousreply 22October 13, 2015 4:36 AM

Andrew Kavovit was great as teen Paul Ryan. His friendship with Andy Dixon was so authentic.

And in case you were wonder WEHT Andy Kavovit, he was on "Shark Tank" with his young daughter:

by Anonymousreply 23October 13, 2015 4:42 AM

by Anonymousreply 24October 13, 2015 4:47 AM

R20

You didn't know about Hunt and Cady?

Lord, honey. Hunt was married with kids. They lived in the country and he'd commute to NYC.

Then he took up with Cady and the two of them moved in together in the City.

He and Cady were hot and heavy.

After a 2-3 years they split up and he went back to the wife.

Hunt was the best Craig IMO.

Time moves on. Cady seems blissfully happy with Jon.

by Anonymousreply 25October 13, 2015 7:16 AM
Hunt was the best Craig IMO.

He was okay in every other role he had, and in general, I find him a better actor than Scott Bryce, but he never convinced me as Craig Montgomery, particularly in scenes with Lucinda. In those he was outstandingly, obstreperously, ostentatiously wrong.

by Anonymousreply 26October 13, 2015 12:38 PM

I always wanted Julie to go up in Andy. Caleb wasn't bad, but Andy was spectacular.

by Anonymousreply 27October 13, 2015 12:39 PM

To me Yvonne Perry is the only Rosanna and Scott Bryce is the only Craig. And oddly enough, I liked the recast Caleb.

But I preferred Seth to Holden.

by Anonymousreply 28October 13, 2015 12:55 PM

Andy was a nerd. Caleb was just right for Julie. I'm glad that they ultimately stayed together.

by Anonymousreply 29October 13, 2015 1:09 PM

Poor Lien. Andy is practically on the verge of raping her in all of those clips and she can't articulate her sexual issues to him at all.

by Anonymousreply 30October 13, 2015 1:22 PM

The thing about Liz Hubbard and Lucinda Walsh was while she had an overwhelming masculine willpower and energy, she still had a woman's needs. She was so much more powerful than Joan Collins as Alexis on Dynasty. So much more.

by Anonymousreply 31October 13, 2015 2:57 PM

Everything about Lucinda Walsh was just so intense and overwhelming. It's hard to put her into adequate words. The only two co stars who I felt really held their own against her was Larry Bryggyman and Eileen Fulton. The thing Eileen has is this hilarious girlish and mischievous charm, which was just the perfect counter to Liz's strident and aggressive approach.

Jensen Buchanan is joining Y&R.

by Anonymousreply 38October 13, 2015 5:50 PM

Okay, about those classic episodes of World Turns - can somebody please tell me why Lily Walsh was the object of so many men's obsession? In the episodes I'm watching, she's married a broker and the guy doing construction on their cottage is in love with her, meanwhile Caleb was pursuing her and obviously, there was Holden and Dusty, and let's not forget the eventual arrival of Damian. Am I missing any?

by Anonymousreply 39October 13, 2015 5:53 PM

R38 And you posted that here because.............?

by Anonymousreply 40October 13, 2015 5:54 PM

It's a P&G thread, bitch. And Jensen was AW's leading lady in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 41October 13, 2015 6:31 PM

r25, I had no idea about any of that. I'd pretty much moved on from soaps around that time - they were all so horrible, so I guess I didn't keep up with the gossip.

His wife took him back after that!?

by Anonymousreply 42October 13, 2015 6:42 PM

R42

Yep

by Anonymousreply 43October 13, 2015 7:06 PM

R40

Wasn't Jenson on ATWT for a time following AW's cancellation.

by Anonymousreply 44October 13, 2015 7:08 PM

Yes, Jensen was on ATWT as Vicky. As a ghost she led Jake and Molly to where she had had the twin babies at issue in the clip above.

Spence wanted Lily because he was nuts. Caleb wanted Lily because his brother wanted her. Derek wanted Lily as part of a plot with his father to get her money (but had a change of heart).

Dusty was her puppy love. Holden first hated her, then loved her. Damian loved her, but loved his family more.

by Anonymousreply 45October 13, 2015 7:32 PM

You'd think Lily was Helen of Troy the way all these men flocked to her. Emily Stewart (Melanie Smith) was gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 46October 13, 2015 7:34 PM
To me Yvonne Perry is the only Rosanna

I thought the Perry's Rosanna was what Lily would have been like if Lucy Deakins had not been replaced by the simpering Martha Byrne.

by Anonymousreply 47October 13, 2015 7:40 PM

Smart fans of AW and ATWT agreed back in 1999 to pretend Vicky and Jake never went to Oakdale.

And r41, "bitch," this is an ATWT thread. GL and AW have their separate threads. A new one about Bert Bauer (GL) and an old one with Therese Lamont's name in it (AW). So stick that up your vagino, "bitch."

by Anonymousreply 48October 13, 2015 8:51 PM

There is no "o" in Jensen, R44.

by Anonymousreply 49October 13, 2015 8:53 PM

There are too many soap threads.

The Bert Bauer max'd out at 600.

ATWT and GL were both discussed in that thread.

Let's continue discussing both here.

by Anonymousreply 50October 13, 2015 9:03 PM

There's a new GL thread. It has "Spaulding" in the title. I didn't start it.

by Anonymousreply 51October 13, 2015 9:47 PM

Heather Rattray was my first Lily, and I liked her a lot. I know it's unusual, but she's my "real" Lily. I was always thinking she might be a lesbian, too.

by Anonymousreply 52October 13, 2015 9:55 PM

Listen r48 you little jerk, like it or not Vicky went onto World Turns, that makes her part of the whole cosmology and so if I want to bring up Miss Buchanan in this thread, I bloody well will.

by Anonymousreply 53October 13, 2015 10:02 PM

Do whatever the fuck you want, R53. But don't expect respect for your choices.

by Anonymousreply 54October 13, 2015 10:09 PM

Do you think I wanted Jake and Vicky to go to Oakdale? They didn't belong there. I don't believe iconic characters to a show should ever go onto another established show, only the players who would pop in and out of town. If Cecile had moved to World Turns, that would have been an easier pill to swallow.

by Anonymousreply 55October 13, 2015 10:18 PM

The P&G soap threads have a history of being friendly and polite.

It's a shame that they couldn't recast Andy with a sexier, hotter actor. He could have been a major player, but alas Scott DeFreitas just couldn't cut it in the hot, sexy department. That's probably why they brought on Duke.

I'm now watching Paul Stenbeck's trial from November 1989. James Stenbeck's mother Greta turns up and every time she sees Emily, she shrieks "WHORE!" and/or slaps her across the face. Wonderful camp!

I loved how long the scenes were on ATWT/AW/GL during their prime.

The scenes really resonated as opposed to the rapid fire pace of today.

The POV of characters could be explored so much better.

All I remember from the Dobson years was Tom and Margo and Mr. Big...a little Erie and Cricket and Craig and Betsy and Steve.

by Anonymousreply 140October 23, 2015 2:35 AM

My favorite Tom was Greg Marxx. He was elegant, dashing, kind, clever, masculine, reliable. I always wondered why I was so drawn to him as a little boy, and found him so deeply attractive. I recently discovered he's gay. Maybe I had a sense for one of my own. It's all so wonderfully mysterious, the gay psyche, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 141October 23, 2015 2:42 AM

I also think Douglas Marland adds credence to the theory about creative genius and homosexuality. His female characters were so rich, his understanding about human nature so deep and dynamic, he was so deeply symapthetic to male characters and the torment of the heterosexual male subject trying to live up to his own expectations... all of this done in a way only a deeply sensitive artist with homosexual inclinations can understand.

by Anonymousreply 142October 23, 2015 2:47 AM

R136 That was not a publicly known thing, but she was at the very beginnings of it when the show ended, which was why her screen time was so seriously curtailed. At that time it was chalked up to age, but about a year or so later she stopped doing some of her singing appearances and withdrew from social media, and a few of the NYC folks I knew who worked at the shows said that was why.

I don't think it's seriously advanced, she still has some level of lucidity, but she has help, I would imagine. Not an issue for a standard 80-something lady, but not a condition where one can sing old cabaret standards or do three days of shows in one taping.

by Anonymousreply 143October 23, 2015 3:18 AM

R137 The fact that Liz never won for Lucinda is the second most egregious Daytime Emmy oversight/snub of all time.

Surpassed in my book only by the fact that somehow, Beverlee McKinsey, the most divine actress ever, NEVER got a nomination. (Hubbard at least won for Althea, another great role, on The Doctors.)

Hal died today in 2006.

The actor killed himself in real life.

He had battled depression through the years.

Many wondered if the very taxing scenes where Hal's daughter died were a tipping point.

The actor had recently lost both his parents

by Anonymousreply 150October 23, 2015 5:25 PM

Jennifer Munson's death was one of the most grueling and realistic soap deaths I've ever seen, so it would not surprise me if it was very hard for an already-depressed person to handle.

The 1989 ATWT playlist stops before Caleb and Julie get together. I'm pretty depressed about that. I would love somebody to upload the whole storyline. Michael David Morrison and Susan Marie Snyder were two very captivating actors. Julie's pairing with Andy is painful to watch. He's such a whiny little jerk of a kid, I simply can't stand watching him in these episodes (he falls off the wagon too). I just need my Juleb fix!

by Anonymousreply 156October 23, 2015 9:06 PM

Me again. Duke is getting on my tits too, calling John "Pop". You can tell Larry Bryggyman is thinking, 'How the hell did I end up with these two jerks as sons?'

by Anonymousreply 157October 23, 2015 9:09 PM

r156, AsTheWorldStillTurns is posting new stuff almost every day on Youtube, and if that continues, Caleb and Julie aren't too far off.

I have to disagree with you about the Julie/Andy pairing, though. It was well worth it for the way John and Kim completely freaked out and both of their families and marriages were impacted. There's a great scene in the Hugheses' living room where Julie's abortion is brought up, and Nancy LITERALLY drops her jaw and clutches her pearls.

by Anonymousreply 158October 23, 2015 9:14 PM

I know, the storyline Marland devised on paper reads well but Scott DeFrates is just not selling the storyline r158. I really am not convinced that Julie could fall in love with this possessive and sulky teenager. In contrast, I'm adoring the actor Andrew K who plays Paul and his infatuation for Emily, which is so believable and beautifully played.

by Anonymousreply 159October 23, 2015 9:56 PM

Marland weaved such an intricate tapestry that so many variations of storyline were possible to him. He was truly powerful. I am currently watching Lisa and Julie's friendship blossoming and saintly Lien looking on jealously. It was by setting up moments like this that Marland could entertain whether or not he wanted to further examine what was merely being suggested. But it was brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 160October 23, 2015 10:05 PM

Another delicious moment. Lisa and Julie are chattering away and Julie says sweetly, 'I've never had a real girlfriend before', then Lisa goes up to Bob and Kim and says, 'I love that girl, she has spunk' and Kim shoots Lisa the look of death.

by Anonymousreply 161October 23, 2015 10:08 PM

"I really am not convinced that Julie could fall in love with this possessive and sulky teenager."

Oh, neither am I. She never loved him for a second-- just used him. It was fabulous when she dumped him for Tonio and drove him farther into alcoholism. Loved every second of it.

by Anonymousreply 162October 23, 2015 10:17 PM

The summer of 91, when shirtless Andy took care of a Julie pregnant with Holden's baby is STILL masturbation material.

by Anonymousreply 163October 23, 2015 10:31 PM

I wish Andy and Holden would have taken turns breeding me and knocking me up!

by Anonymousreply 164October 23, 2015 10:32 PM

Julie did love Andy. But when Tonio showed her possibilities, how could she resist that? She'd been treated like a whore by everyone.

by Anonymousreply 165October 23, 2015 10:33 PM

The episodes I'm watching, Heather Rattray has come on as Lily Walsh. It makes me wonder who else could have played the role. I would have loved to have seen Kristian Alfonso as a recast Lily. She had left Days around the same time Martha left World Turns. Really, the characters are pretty much interchangeable. Snotty rich kid meets local rough boy. I also would have liked Robin Christopher to have played Frannie because she's similar to Julianne Moore. It's weird seeing a blonde Frannie.

Why the fuck do they concentrate on Katie and that fucking guy (I don't even know who the fuck he is) during Julianne's return scene?

by Anonymousreply 183October 29, 2015 2:42 PM

Because the show had already been ruined beyond repair by that point, R183. Nothing would ever bring it back. Certainly not Kuntie Perretti.

by Anonymousreply 184October 29, 2015 2:55 PM

Because by that time the show was all Katie, all the time, sadly. Teri Conn is a good actress (which she proved during the Brad Dies storyline), but I hate where they took the character and the amount of airtime she got.

The EP Goutman declared that Katie was the "sweetheart" of the show in one of his last TV Guide interviews before the show ended. However, they should've brought back Simon for that instead of having that actor from GL play Chris for a few months.

Nathaniel Marston, who played Eddie, Margo's underage romantic interest, was critically injured in a car accident and his mom is posting about it on Facebook. Says no alcohol was involved and that if he survives, he'll probably be paralyzed from the neck down.

by Anonymousreply 204November 1, 2015 7:46 PM

That news about Marston is so sad. I know that he had some issues following his OLTL (or maybe even during) stint. I wish him and his family the best.

You know that the temporary Althea whom someone mentioned above as looking like Bobbie Gentry was a Tony nominated actress, right? I get that Liz Hubbard is irreplaceable, but the late Virginia Vestoff was no slouch.

by Anonymousreply 205November 2, 2015 7:15 AM

Vestoff? That's Abigail Adams!!!

by Anonymousreply 206November 2, 2015 10:51 PM

The Latest on Marston....

He was to have surgery at 3pm today.

The doctors say if he survives he'll need 2 years of extensive rehab.

by Anonymousreply 207November 3, 2015 1:00 AM

Vestoff wasn't at all bad, and I kind of see why they cast her, but Hubbard was so divine it's hard to replace her.

And blond, smooth haired Hubbard was replaced by Vestoff, who looked like a GINORMOUS ginger Dusty Springfield/Bobbie Gentry wig was on her head.

William Fichtner was on Empire tonight playing a pseudo David Geffen.

I've been a fan ever since he was ATWT's Rod Landry.

by Anonymousreply 211November 5, 2015 8:12 AM

Fichtner pulled off the almost-impossible in making Landry a sympathetic character. The reaction of the Snyder family to his long-ago rape of Iva was so realistic: rage, tolerance, and everything in between. A perfect example of how Marland used gray areas to force his characters into constant self-examination. Is it okay to forgive? Do I deserve love? What is a family?

by Anonymousreply 212November 5, 2015 2:41 PM

How did Rod Landry turn into Josh Snyder? That was a little before my time.

by Anonymousreply 213November 5, 2015 3:21 PM

r213, he changed his name to Rod Landry in young adulthood because of his shame over his (legally unpunished) crime. So to people like Betsy Stewart and her family, he was "Rod," but to the Snyders and their friends he was still "Josh."

by Anonymousreply 214November 5, 2015 3:30 PM

Thanks, R214. That must have been confusing, having two different names while living in one town.

by Anonymousreply 215November 5, 2015 3:37 PM

Bad News Update for Nathaniel Marston

He took a turn for the worse yesterday.

He quit breathing twice.

He's still requiring a ventilator.

The doctors thought he might regain the use of his upper extremities.

They now say he will definitely be a quadriplegic.

Michael Easton has set up a Go Fund Me page and Kathy Brier is organizing a charity concert for him.

by Anonymousreply 216November 6, 2015 8:59 PM

They should let him go. It's what I want if I'm ever in such a state.

by Anonymousreply 217November 6, 2015 9:22 PM

R217

According to his mother the doctors presented him with that choice.

Even though he was on a vent and unable to speak he "communicated" to them he wanted everything done.

This was the day after the accident.

Now his mom says they're having difficulty waking him up post surgery.

It's really tragic.

by Anonymousreply 218November 6, 2015 9:27 PM

I saw a preview for the new series "Chicago Med".

One of the doctors is played by the actor who played Margo's oldest son.

His name escapes me.

by Anonymousreply 219November 7, 2015 3:39 AM

Margo's elder son was Adam, R219, who was played by Craig Lawlor, Matthew J. Morrison, Matt Cavenaugh, and Tom Degnan, none of whom is listed in IMDB's credits for CHICAGO MED?

Could you be talking about Will Munson, Hal and Barbara's son, played by Jesse Lee Soffer? He plays Detective Jay Halstead on CHICAGO P.D. Jay's brother, Will Halstead, is a doctor on CHICAGO MED. He's played by Nick Gehlfuss, who looks a lot like Jesse Soffer. Here's a pic of them both. Jesse is second in from the left, Nick is on the right.

Some cable channels started airing The Doctors a few months ago.

My company doesn't offer it.

A guy I follow on Twitter has started uploading episodes to Youtube.

His YT username is MRGH80s

The amazing Elizabeth Hubbard played Althea Davis on The Doctors.

by Anonymousreply 250December 6, 2015 11:53 PM

So I'm walking down 11th St and heading onto 6th Avenue when I stop to take a picture of one of the small old cemeteries that are around when someone behind me yells out"I think they are all out of room!" And I turn around and its Kathleen Widdows(Emma Synder) She was a character. So funny and so nice. She told me how she got in trouble one time for kissing Jon Hensley on the mouth in a scene. I said who could blame you and she laughed. Again a treat to run into her.

Are they really the stars? It looks like it's a black series.

by Anonymousreply 254December 7, 2015 8:54 PM

R254

I believe they are the stars but it's an ensemble show.

Martha says she wrote the role especially for EH.

by Anonymousreply 255December 8, 2015 5:15 PM

Today six years ago was when the ATWT cancellation was announced.

by Anonymousreply 256December 9, 2015 3:25 AM

Ugh. I can remember receiving an email alert at work from some entertainment website announcing it. I knew it had to happen (the show was so awful by that time and had been for a few years), but it still upset me.

by Anonymousreply 257December 9, 2015 3:35 AM

I was at work when it was announced. I knew it was coming and had just watched GL die, after becoming very involved with THAT show...so we kinda all knew.

Still sad, though. Though ATWT really sucked at the end. Fucking Katie Peretti's snatch.

Kathy Brier gave the eulogy at Nathanial Marston's funeral

His mom asked her to post it.

When I can find the link I'll post it.

It's a beautiful eulogy.

I was shocked to learn that at one point they were lovers in real life.

They kept that under the radar--at least to me.

He had terrible teeth at that point. And bad Linc and bad Margo. Iva and John dating. KMH as Emily. You can see why Doug was just about to completely overhaul the show.

by Anonymousreply 263December 13, 2015 2:31 PM

How long did Barbara and Hal stay together? Who are the kids?

by Anonymousreply 264December 13, 2015 4:03 PM

r264, they were on and off from the mid-Eighties until Hal died. Jennifer was conceived by Barbara and Darryl Crawford in an adulterous affair, but was raised as Hal's child. Will, born several years later, was the biological son of both Barbara and Hal.

by Anonymousreply 265December 13, 2015 7:37 PM

I wonder if Barbara ever gets to Chicago to visit Will, who's a cop up there these days.

by Anonymousreply 266December 13, 2015 8:30 PM

Barbara and Hal were getting married in Kentucky so those kids were his nieces and nephews.

by Anonymousreply 267December 13, 2015 9:12 PM

Thanks, R267. I guess Tess was off doing some indie flick in Zanzibar or Greenland.

by Anonymousreply 268December 13, 2015 10:05 PM

I know no one remembered Glynnis O'Connor as Dee Stewart by then, but she was also just too damn short to be Margo. Just like Lindsay Frost was too tall for Betsy. It isn't enough to look like the previous actor.

by Anonymousreply 269December 13, 2015 10:58 PM

Lindsay Frost was about a million times better as Betsy than that whiny baby Meg Ryan. I didn't even mind the height thing, because it felt appropriate-- like Betsy had *finally* grown up.

by Anonymousreply 270December 14, 2015 1:22 AM
And bad Linc and bad Margo. Iva and John dating. KMH as Emily. You can see why Doug was just about to completely overhaul the show.

Was he? Is it known what his plans were? Bad Linc and Iva were gone by the end of the year, and bad Margo only a little while later. Of course KMH as Emily stayed on and became a cornerstone of the show.

I'm curious about what he wanted to change.

by Anonymousreply 271December 14, 2015 2:04 AM

Doug said he had gotten too far away from the core families. His last major moves included bringing Lily back with Damien. I am fairly sure he wrote the end to the Debbie, Hutch, Linc group before he died.

by Anonymousreply 272December 14, 2015 1:25 PM

And then there was Carly, R272. Or was she a product of the new regime(s)?

by Anonymousreply 273December 14, 2015 2:02 PM

Carly was after Marland's death.

by Anonymousreply 274December 14, 2015 2:59 PM

That doesn't surprise me, R274.

by Anonymousreply 275December 14, 2015 3:03 PM

Glynnis O'Connor couldn't handle the pace of the hour ATWT after doing movies, tv movies for years. You either sink or swim and she had the smarts to realize that. She also had trouble playing 'tough' as Margo after Margaret Colin and Hilary Bailey Smith. Ellen Dolan who I would never have taken for 'tough' either, made it work for her.

by Anonymousreply 276December 14, 2015 3:30 PM

Did Marland have any input when it came to recasts? Linc #2 was so awful and unsexy - a big departure from Linc #1 James Wlcek, who I've always read here was a Marland favorite.

by Anonymousreply 277December 14, 2015 3:45 PM

Any truth to the rumor that Carly Tenney was in the story outlines bible that Marland left behind? Apparently in early 1993, he had written projections for well into 1995.

by Anonymousreply 278December 14, 2015 4:50 PM

Rosanna was a Marland creation and all the seeds for Carly were already in place with Marland. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Rosanna-Mike-Carly was in his outlines to replace the Debbie-Linc-Hutch stuff. He certainly had the Orlena story outlined and the malpractice suit outlined...though those both went off the rails without him to follow through.

by Anonymousreply 279December 14, 2015 9:02 PM
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Rosanna-Mike-Carly was in his outlines

You know Mike was. Remember his first scene, carrying the tire, shirtless, like that exceptionally hot tyre guy who was gaybashed to death (UK, IIRC, on account of "tyre"). No surprise that Andy's seeming obsession with Mike came from the pen of a gay male. Andy-Mike-Rosanna would have been such a better story than Rosanna-Mike-Imitation Janet Leigh.
He certainly had the Orlena story outlined

Really? Poisoned lemon drops (or was it postage stamps?) came from Mr. Marland? Was he becoming Alzheimers-y?
and the malpractice suit outlined...though those both went off the rails without him to follow through.

Orlooney [italic]began[/italic] off the rails. Lisa suing John? Andy being forced to testify against his father? That was as good as soap opera got.
I ignored Rosanna once Cady assumed the role.
Cady's Rosanna and Hunt's Craig had me glued to OLTL.

by Anonymousreply 283December 14, 2015 11:09 PM

You're an awfully testy little twit.

I am no MADD fan but I really enjoyed Cady & Hunt's portrayals.

You do realize more than 1 HW wrote for them don't you ?

by Anonymousreply 284December 14, 2015 11:24 PM

Cady was a revelation as Rosanna. It made me wonder how amazing she could have been as Marley on Another World (opposite, say, Cynthia Watros as Vicky?)

by Anonymousreply 285December 14, 2015 11:30 PM

R285

WOW! I never even thought of Cady as Marley. She would have been really good IMO.

I worshiped Anne Heche as Vicky/Marley.

by Anonymousreply 286December 14, 2015 11:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 287December 15, 2015 12:03 AM

I never liked Cady as Rosanna. It was just a completely different character. Just like Craig, just like Dusty, et al.

by Anonymousreply 288December 15, 2015 2:12 AM

Scott Bryce was the ONLY Craig.

by Anonymousreply 289December 15, 2015 2:23 AM

Agreed, r289.

by Anonymousreply 290December 15, 2015 2:28 AM

I never liked Rosanna until Cady played her (the other actress acted like she was constipated or something). I thought she was great with Craig. It was when Rosanna was paired with Paul that her character went off the rails (as did some others when they were paired with Paul). She lost her smarts, her edge, everything that made her interesting. He wasn't all that.

by Anonymousreply 291December 15, 2015 3:07 AM

I read This Day in Soap History every day via Twitter.

I was shocked to learn that DAYS Peter Reckell began on ATWT as Eric Hollister.

He was the brother of Brad Hollister.

I have no recollection of either character.

Anyone else remember them ?

Supposedly Brad was involved with Lisa.

CZ and Siri are still friendly, but Mark and Colleen, not so much. But that's what happens when you cheat on your wife, give her an STD that gives her cancer, then cheat on her some more while she's getting treatment.

by Anonymousreply 320January 30, 2016 8:54 AM

Eileen Fulton was notorious for stinking up the bathroom at the studio. She must have had a terrible diet. Everyone knew not to go into the bathroom after she had been in there. Pee You! She let out some nasty excretment!!!

by Anonymousreply 321January 30, 2016 12:50 PM

R321 She acted like her shit didn't stink. However I knew she was hiding a secret.

by Anonymousreply 323January 31, 2016 3:49 AM

R321 is clearly that awful Juicy Janet woman, the one with no class!

by Anonymousreply 324January 31, 2016 8:55 PM

Eileen created soap p.r. and gossip. Kathy Hays is too elegant for words.

Patsy Bruder - what a downer in the early 70's; when they finally got rid of her two 35 year old sons, Dan and Paul, they let her hair down a bit and de-aged her, making her the mother of only Annie and Dawn.

by Anonymousreply 325February 1, 2016 1:13 PM

Eileen was a nightmare! Her shit stank!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 326February 1, 2016 7:39 PM

That was a rumor started by Liz Hubbard.

At the show's end, Rosemary Prinz as Penny should have walked around the square clutching her teddy bear.

by Anonymousreply 327February 2, 2016 5:36 PM

Liz Hubbard used to walk in to the ladies room after Eileen stunk it up. Liz would then say "Oh, Darling". Eileen had really smelly shit.

by Anonymousreply 348February 21, 2016 10:51 PM

I'm watching the 1990's eps on YouTube also (thank you, AsTheWorldStillTurns!!!) and my God was that soap at its very finest. Even the characters I hadn't remembered as being very interesting are fascinating to me now. Sean and Frannie had wonderful chemistry-- they should have done a lot more with both actors. (Plus it's really fun watching Lily go after Sean.) Blake and Jessica, too. They were just hanging out at Jess' and the conversation turned to how painful it was that people in their lives thought that they were "trying to be white" just because they were ambitious and successful. These are the kinds of conversations you NEVER see on soaps anymore, and it's why no one watches.

by Anonymousreply 352February 22, 2016 3:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 354February 22, 2016 5:07 AM

Colleen was a raging bitch. She made sure that her dressing room was far away from the other cast members dressing rooms. When Ben Hendrickson offed himself, she was so phoney in her "grief". No wonder that Mark Pinter abandoned her. She is a real piece of work. Truth.

by Anonymousreply 355February 23, 2016 2:23 AM

Sounds like she needed Aunt Kim to give her a "kiddo" talking to!

by Anonymousreply 356February 23, 2016 2:31 AM

I heard Mark cheated on her; that's not the same as abandoning

by Anonymousreply 357February 23, 2016 2:33 AM

Mark cheated on her, gave her the virus that gave her oral cancer, and then cheated on her AND left her when she was being treated.

That's abandoning, and if I ever saw him, I would kick him in the nuts.

Colleen is fabulous and warm. Nothing at all like her character. Which probably means Kathy Hays tears the wings off of flies, but let's not ponder that.

by Anonymousreply 358February 23, 2016 3:38 AM

She tore off Glenn Ford's wings.

by Anonymousreply 359February 23, 2016 3:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 360February 23, 2016 5:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 361February 23, 2016 5:04 AM

Didn't Zenk and Hillary Bailey Smith loathe each other?

by Anonymousreply 362February 23, 2016 5:06 AM

I had a boyfriend whom Michael David Morrison resembled big time. We were over by the time I started watching WT, but I always enjoyed MDM, especially when he was wearing practically nothing. TMT.

by Anonymousreply 363February 23, 2016 5:08 AM

Colleen's real battle was in the early 80's with Jacqueline Schultz. Those two were being played off each other. Schultz at the time, had more power.

by Anonymousreply 364February 23, 2016 10:16 AM

Yes, Zenk and Margaret Colin got along really well, and Zenk never warmed up to Hilary Bailey Smith in the same way, which pissed off HBS. But Zenk was generally well-liked. Mark Pinter was not.

by Anonymousreply 365February 23, 2016 12:26 PM

Zenk was NOT well liked. She cheated on her husband with Pinter. Pinter and Zenk were universally disliked on that set.

by Anonymousreply 366February 23, 2016 12:36 PM

Pinter's daughter married Carson Daly. What a wonderful family. I can imagine Carson being all real and calling him Dad The Cad.

by Anonymousreply 367February 23, 2016 1:11 PM

I never took to Kayla from Days playing Sierra. I always thought Finn was quite good in the role. She also had a sublime beauty that unique on soaps. If she is fucking Swan good for her.

by Anonymousreply 368February 23, 2016 1:17 PM

I remember the big build-up for Sierra before she ever appeared on the screen. Lucinda always talked about how brave she was during the revolution, blah, blah, blah. I bought it wholesale, and was so disappointed when she finally appeared. She was this soft-spoken, almost mousy person who was not brave at all, much less a heroine. What a huge let-down (I was young). I preferred her later incarnation, who had some personality.

by Anonymousreply 369February 23, 2016 1:43 PM

I thought Finn was perfection in the role. Can't understand why they didn't bring her back, but then again, watching her work with Hunt Block instead of Scott Bryce would have been sickening and broken my heart, so...

by Anonymousreply 370February 23, 2016 3:31 PM

Ask Jackie Shultz about Colleen, and you'll get an earful.

by Anonymousreply 371February 23, 2016 4:12 PM

I liked Mary Beth Evans as Sierra. So much better than the wimpy, wispy Finn Carter with her odd teeth.

by Anonymousreply 372February 23, 2016 10:26 PM

I'm not on team Colleen. There are many, many people from the ATWT crew/actors who will dish on Colleen. The woman was NOT liked at all. Couldn't keep her legs closed and was a real beeeyatch.

by Anonymousreply 375February 24, 2016 10:17 AM

I suspect the anti-Collen troll is the same person as the anti-Beverlee troll in the other thread.

by Anonymousreply 376February 24, 2016 6:23 PM

R358, I agree about the 'abandoning'; previously, it was written (at least I read it as) she 'deserved' to be left, which she did not. Nor did she deserve to be cheated and certainly not given the cancer via the cheating.

People can be team Colleen or team Hillary (I think one of Margo's slaps was as real as possible); people are both good and bad; no one is always good.

I think we can all agree that when CZ and HBS were on screen together it was magic.

by Anonymousreply 378February 24, 2016 7:01 PM

They should have spun off Luke, Reid and Noah onto LOGO for their own soap.

by Anonymousreply 379February 25, 2016 12:28 PM

Pretty sure that Colleen and Maggie Reed detested each other as well.

by Anonymousreply 380February 25, 2016 3:01 PM

R376 There are multiple anti-Bev trolls on the AW thread. I can see ripping Colleen for her personal conduct with STI king, Pinter. Maybe she was a back stabbing cunt.Otherwise she did a nice job on the show. She also remained quite attractive throughout the years.

by Anonymousreply 381February 25, 2016 3:06 PM

It seems like an endless list of people that Colleen had conflict with. Hmmm, seems like Colleen is the common denominator. She's obviously the one who had issues, beginning with her cheating ways.

by Anonymousreply 382February 25, 2016 4:17 PM

R379 I would've watched that. With Richard and the long-scarfed professor, there were at least 5 gay men in Oakdale. And ex-step-grandpa Brian could come back to town to make it an even number!

by Anonymousreply 383February 26, 2016 3:11 AM

No, Colleen and Maggie are friends. I follow both of them on social media and they often say hello to each other.

by Anonymousreply 386February 26, 2016 3:27 AM

So I'm to believe some hated Zenk because she and Grant had an affair, fell in love, divorced spouses and got married?

Some may not have approved but it wasn't some fling. They were together for almost 2 decades.

I'm confident 99.9% got over it and accepted it. Only a wingnut or a personal friend of the spouses would hang on to that.

by Anonymousreply 387February 26, 2016 1:02 PM

I could swear there was bad blood between Colleen and Margaret Reed. I know that Colleen was quite close with Martha Byrne and Michael Park. Did Colleen ever share scenes with either of them?

by Anonymousreply 388February 26, 2016 4:48 PM

Zenk did seem to get along well with all the kids offset. The fact that she did not get along with some women who were not on the show all that long and were competing with her for screentime in their age bracket...and she survived them all indicates to me that Colleen wasn't the problem.

by Anonymousreply 389February 26, 2016 9:04 PM

I almost died when i saw Don Hastings and Marie Masters walking together in the west village in 1991. It wad a warm summer night and I had just exited the old uncle charlies bar on Greenwich. It was my first time in a gay bar and I passed the two of them as I walking along Christipher Street. That was some night.

Martha Byrne's Lily played into the frau fantasy of being romantically pursued by hot guys. No way someone like Martha Byrne would have attracted a Jon Hensley or Brian Bloom or Paolo Sergente IRL.

by Anonymousreply 395February 28, 2016 2:08 PM

"No way someone like Martha Byrne would have attracted a Jon Hensley or Brian Bloom or Paolo Sergente IRL."

Um, she did sleep with Segante in real life, so...

by Anonymousreply 396February 28, 2016 2:30 PM

They made Lily more dowdy than they needed to later, but I think Martha Byrne was attractive, and had that all-american girl look when first involved with Holden. TV and movies are all about someone getting the fantasy mate -- look at all the average to below average looking men who had the knock-out love interest. It was a requirement for CBS sitcoms for awhile.

Not many romantic interests would be a match for Hensley at the peak of his hotness (except for maybe Brian Bloom or Paolo Sergente).

by Anonymousreply 397February 28, 2016 2:37 PM

I think there would be plenty of men who would go after Lily because she was an heiress.

by Anonymousreply 398February 28, 2016 9:04 PM

I agree.

by Anonymousreply 399February 28, 2016 9:08 PM

I just watched the episode with Casey's wake. So many things in this that show Marland's brilliance. First, he delayed Casey's death so the audience would have time to get used to Ellen Dolan as Margo. Casey's parents were already real characters even though they lived out of town. Everyone's reaction is different and completely rooted in their histories (including Lien's Buddhism!). And Doug brought Josh and Meg back for the funeral (because Meg had trained as a nurse under Lyla, of course) and Meg had (justified) suspicions about her sister-in-law Julie (who she was just meeting for the first time). We didn't see them, but everyone was talking about Bob and Kim and Susan, who Tom reported all came to the wake, though Susan cleared out before Bob and Kim got there.

So good!

by Anonymousreply 400February 28, 2016 9:26 PM

People talk about "umbrella stories" now, but ATWT back then WAS an umbrella, all the time, continuously, for years on end. And that's what it takes to make a great soap.

by Anonymousreply 401February 28, 2016 9:51 PM

Agree. That's why I switched from the ABC soaps all those years ago to watch ATWT, because it was an ensemble, not a show putting a lot of its efforts into a character (Erica Kane) or couple (Luke and Laura).

Then ATWT turned into the "Carly" show and kept many characters in little bubbles with few interactions with members of their own family or long-time friends....any attempts at an umbrella story failed....no wonder the show tanked.

by Anonymousreply 402February 28, 2016 11:23 PM

Ugh, that hideous Carly character played by the insufferable MW. No comment.

by Anonymousreply 403February 28, 2016 11:28 PM

r400 and r401...MARY!!!

by Anonymousreply 404February 28, 2016 11:57 PM

Martha Byrne's greatest life achievement as landing Paolo Segante in real life. She was cute at best and he was hot. She must have been an acrobat in bed. I had a good looking friend who was with a bland looking woman. He told me that in the sack she was every man's fantasy.

PS and MB still remain friends after their marriages and the like. I wonder if she ever blows him for old time's sake.

by Anonymousreply 405February 29, 2016 12:02 AM

I had no idea that Les Moonves' first wife was the real life daughter of the actress who plays Susan.

I just read that yesterday.

She must really hate him. He left her daughter for Chen and he cancelled ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 406March 2, 2016 5:36 PM

Paolo Seganti looked as if he blew his nose into his hand, then raked his fingers through his hair. At least once an hour. Seriously, he was one dirty-looking motherfucker.

by Anonymousreply 407March 2, 2016 5:54 PM

Thanks to the other Carly haters. Sometimes I think I was the only one.

by Anonymousreply 408March 2, 2016 5:54 PM

I loved Julia (Annie Parisse). The entire room at college cheered when she punched Carly in the stomach and then kidnapped her at gunpoint (I remember this distinctly because it was a couple of weeks before 9/11).

by Anonymousreply 409March 2, 2016 5:58 PM

"Then ATWT turned into the "Carly" show and kept many characters in little bubbles with few interactions with members of their own family or long-time friends....any attempts at an umbrella story failed...."

IMO, they did do *one* great umbrella story during those later years: the Jennifer/Gwen baby switch. Almost every single character was involved in some way, and Jennifer Landon, Jennifer Ferrin, Ben Hendrickson, Colleen Zenk, Michael Park, Jesse Soffer, and-- yes-- Maura West did amazing work. The writers and actors made one of soap's most eye-rolling cliches fresh and heartbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 410March 2, 2016 8:00 PM

Boring as watching shit dry, R410. So far below "MARY!" standards, I might as well call you "BILL!"

by Anonymousreply 411March 2, 2016 8:02 PM

I agree with r411.... the fact that r410 is trying to sell post-Marland ATWT as anything but the shit it was makes me want him to hand in his gay card immediately.

by Anonymousreply 412March 2, 2016 8:39 PM

First things first: there should be no mention of Carly Tenney on a thread about Julie and Caleb.

by Anonymousreply 413March 2, 2016 8:40 PM

I have to seriously question the taste level of anyone who thinks the baby switch storyline was good. Even though the actors did their best to sell it, it was total garbage and obviously a ripoff of the far more successful and entertaining AMC storyline. I don't deify Marland the way others do, but it would've been 100x better under his pen.

by Anonymousreply 414March 2, 2016 9:01 PM

"I don't deify Marland the way others do, but it would've been 100x better under his pen."

Well, obviously. I do worship Marland, and yes, overall the show was "shit" in its last years. I praised one story, not the show as a whole. I hate what they did to it.

by Anonymousreply 415March 2, 2016 9:29 PM

"Lisa sues John; Andy is forced to testify against his father" was the only post-Marland story that worked. Richard Culliton was listed as headwriter.

by Anonymousreply 416March 2, 2016 9:31 PM

Say what you want about Goutman and Passanante, but ATWT was the only one of the more recently cancelled shows (talking about GL, AMC, OLTL, AW) that did not gut its core. Whether that was them or P&G, the show was at least recognizable when it went off the air.

by Anonymousreply 417March 2, 2016 9:33 PM

Maybe, R417, if you started watching in 1995.

Post-Marland, Lucinda was defanged by having her make up with Holden, absolutely destroying the character. Lisa disappeared nearly completely. The cunt brigade fired Andy Dixon. And where was Emma, at Janie Porter's every day?

And worst of all, the show was turned into As the World Turns around Carly Tenney.

Please, spare us any further analysis.

by Anonymousreply 418March 2, 2016 9:41 PM

I would add to r418:

1. Kim Hughes, once the host of the classy "Patterns" talk show, was turned into a purveyor of reality-TV sleaze, urging Katie Peretti to get as down and dirty as possible for ratings. Kim Hughes would never do this.

2. Lyla Peretti was turned into a cruel, overbearing mother who forced her child-- Katie Peretti-- to compete in degrading child pageants. Lyla Peretti would never do this.

3. Nancy Hughes was turned into a "mentor" and BFF to-- you guessed it!-- Katie Peretti, even after Katie falsely accused her grandson of rape, then lied about a hit-and-run accident that could have killed Nancy. Nancy Hughes would never do this.

Now what was that you were saying about the show revolving around Carly?

by Anonymousreply 419March 2, 2016 10:20 PM

In an interview a few years back, William Fichtner who played Josh Snyder made fun of Doug's writing. He was asked about his time on the show, and he said that soap writing is awful and joked that his character was all fucked up because he had killed a dog or something.

by Anonymousreply 420March 2, 2016 10:55 PM

To have somebody mention Carly (or Cuntley as some of us preferred to call her) in a thread, and a thread about the heavenly Julie Little Miss Seattle no less makes me feel very depressed.

by Anonymousreply 421March 2, 2016 11:07 PM
In an interview a few years back, William Fichtner who played Josh Snyder made fun of Doug's writing. He was asked about his time on the show, and he said that soap writing is awful and joked that his character was all fucked up because he had killed a dog or something.

I remember shortly after Invasion ended he was bashing the writing on that show. He might have had some valid points, but how he stated them made him come off as a bit of a pretentious whiner.

by Anonymousreply 422March 2, 2016 11:22 PM

Fichtner should keep his mouth shut. He got a lot of good press for his role on ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 423March 2, 2016 11:50 PM

Lyla Peretti was gone by 1995, wasn't she?

by Anonymousreply 424March 3, 2016 12:27 AM

Lyla was gone by 95, yes, I thinks he left in 94 when Craig came back, but Sward came back for a few shows circa 2000 to work with Katie; She looked great; wished she had been back for more.

at least GL did its best to give happy endings all around: Ed and Holly (no Roger!) off on a cruise; Phillip and Beth married, Rick and Mindy about to be married; Josh and Reva together -- ATWT gave NOTHING to Lisa. And Noelle Beck offered to step aside and let Miss Martha come back and finish up Lily, but TPTB never made that happen.

Btw, does anyone know if Sward's singing is on CD? I'd love to get a copy of 'I Think That they're Playing Our Song'

by Anonymousreply 425March 3, 2016 12:52 AM

"Lyla Peretti was gone by 1995, wasn't she?"

She came back a few times as a prop to show how "emotionally abused" Katie had been by Lyla. Never mind that we'd watched Lyla for years and had never seen her be anything but a caring, down-to-earth mother. Who knows why Anne Sward agreed to do it? She doesn't seem to need money. I would've told them to go to hell.

by Anonymousreply 426March 3, 2016 12:53 AM

ATWT didn't use Eileen Fulton much because she kept plugging up the studios toilet. I don't know what Eileen's diet was, but, whew, the stink that came from her bowels! ATWT never wanted her in the studio much because she kept plugging up the shitter. True story.

by Anonymousreply 427March 3, 2016 1:05 AM

Lyla was such an annoying character. And her singing...sheesh! I've heard more pleasant sounds at night coming from the cats that occupy the alley next to my building. I think she was originally brought on as a love interest for Bob Hughes, but that never panned out.

by Anonymousreply 428March 3, 2016 1:13 AM

Eileen Fulton's farts coming out of the studio john sounded better than Lyla's singing.

by Anonymousreply 429March 3, 2016 1:23 AM

I must have stopped watching; didn't see Lyla's 2000 ish return to see how she'd been re-written. sigh.

There really was nothing like the 80s and early 90s.

When Babs wanted Lucinda to buy out Simply Barbara (in case she went to jail for killing James -- who wasn't even dead), Lucinda says to Babs: "But Barbara, darling, Simply Barbara simply wouldn't be Simply Barbara without Barbara."

Dreadful writing. I could never watch the show for more than a week or two at a time.

R420

I hate to hear that Fichter slammed his time at ATWT.

I have been a huge fan of his ever since he played Josh.

That whole storyline of Josh/Lily/Iva was just spectacular.

Any idea what publication he made these statements in ?

And Josh's issues weren't based on the death of his dog (WTF??).

He had been physically and sexually abused as a child.

by Anonymousreply 435March 3, 2016 4:11 PM

R420, I'm sure if you ever talked to Fitchner one on one, he'd have some nice things to say about ATWT.

I find that talent tends to respond to the reporter asking the question: You were on a SOAP? REALLY? Then, the talent speaks disparagingly.

But if it were asked: "Wow, you were on one of the best soaps during one of the best writing eras ever! Did you like it?" He'd respond differently.

by Anonymousreply 436March 4, 2016 1:41 AM

r436, I don't know about that. Some actors just look down on the genre, no matter how well-written the show. Look at Larry Bryggman. He would constantly put down soaps. He recounted a story of a lunch meeting he had with some P&G bigwig in the early 70s in which he complained about the writing and ways to improve it. The P&G guy essentially said their objective is to sell laundry detergent to housewives and that the writing didn't have to be any good. And this was when ATWT was the golden child and #1 in the ratings! The only time I ever heard him say something nice was when he was the best actor Emmy circa 1987 and he praised the hard-working cast. I think he appreciated his fellow actors, and I know he took Scott DeFreitas under his wing, but I think he ALWAYS felt the writing was just inferior. Probably the same thing with Fichtner.

Has Meg Ryan or Marissa Tomei ever talked about their time on ATWT? I think that it was so fucking classy of Julianne Moore to return out of pure love for the show and former castmates. There was no agenda, no motivation to promote her latest film, just pure altruism on her part. A real class act. Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 440March 4, 2016 3:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 444March 4, 2016 3:55 AM

The show should've invited Patricia Bruder back. Next to Eileen Fulton's treatment, the way Bruder just disappeared from the show without explanation was just awful.

by Anonymousreply 445March 4, 2016 4:09 AM

They definitely should have invited Pat Bruder back. As for Eileen, they didn't use her a lot because she used to plug up the studio toilet with her excrement and it ran into a lot of $$$$ to unplug the pipes. She had a terrible diet. They didn't want her in the studio too often.

by Anonymousreply 446March 4, 2016 4:34 AM

Marland did the murder trial with a mother/daughter angle 3 different times: Lesley/Laura on GH; Jennifer/Amanda on GL; and Kim/Frannie on ATWT.

On GH, Laura accidentally killed older lover David Hamilton after he taunted her, saying Lesley was the one who really 'turned him on.' Lesley came upon the scene (Laura blacked out the memory of the deed for a while) and decided to take the blame. The D.A. found a portion of a ripped up love letter that said 'nor Rick must ever find out about our love' (something like that). The D.A. presented it at trial and Lesley confessed to spare Laura.

On GL, Jennifer killed Lucille in self-defense. Amanda didn't know she was Jen's daughter; Mike Bauer put the pieces together and it came out at the second trial, causing Amanda to miscarry Ben's baby.

On ATWT, Marland really perfected the story. Kim came into a room and saw dead Doug on top of Frannie, assumed that Frannie had stabbed him to death with the crystal cylinder (great choice of weapon!) and lied that she had done to save Frannie from being raped. Doug being impotent and the entry wounds didn't match Kim's story, however. At trial, Frannie recalled that Doug had been killed by Marsha Talbot.

Doug Marland was brilliant; he knew kids watching soaps were lucky to get 'don't slam the door' from their parents. When they watched his stories, kids saw parents who really cared for their kids.

Lyla was singing at the Mona Lisa one time, a lot of Oakdale is seated and in shadows listening to her as the spotlight literally is on her.

I'm watching it and I see these two elbows constantly sticking up and then going down as this woman voraciously eats a salad while STILL looking up at Lyla giving her full attention.

I thought only Liz in the shadows could steal focus from a singer with a spotlight on her.

by Anonymousreply 466March 6, 2016 2:48 AM

Hubbard was your typical hambone "look at me" actress. Kathy ays could act rings around her, but Kim wasn't a showy character so Kathy was overlooed at Emmy time.

by Anonymousreply 467March 6, 2016 6:43 PM

Yes, Liz Hubbard was a scenery chewing ham in the Kim Zimmer vein but you need those types, just as you need the Kathy Hays and the Maureen Garretts in contrast.

by Anonymousreply 468March 6, 2016 6:48 PM

Ms. Hubbard acted like that because Lucinda was a larger than life character. If you watch her performances on the Doctors, you will see her as Dr. Althea Davis playing very quiet, very nuanced scenes beautifully, and you can't take your eyes off of her. I can't imagine what Doctors fans thought after seeing her play that to watch her as Lucinda Walsh since most soap actors play the same type of character from show to show. The two characters are night and day.

by Anonymousreply 469March 6, 2016 7:15 PM

She could be OTT as Althea too. However, The Doctors, especially in its earlier years, had a highly theatrical quality that went well with Hubbard's stagey acting. I have to say that she had more chemistry with her ATWT leading men like Bryggman, Bryce, and Wiggin than she did with the guy who played Nick Bellini on The Doctors have seen some eps on retro and I really don't see any chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 470March 6, 2016 7:35 PM

r464, I've been watching four or five eps a day from 1990 since ATWST started posting tons a day, while also bouncing back to 1986 every few days. Don't think I can find it, but I'll try.

by Anonymousreply 472March 6, 2016 7:55 PM

thank you, R472

R455 Moones was never married to Marie Master's daughter. He had two wives - Leslie Westerfield and Julie Chen. Emily Harris is Marie's daughter, born I think in 1969. So give it a rest.

Where the hell is Colleen Zenk Pinter these days?

by Anonymousreply 475March 7, 2016 12:51 PM

R475

She's very active.

She tweeted this week about several jobs she has lined up including something with DeNiro.

by Anonymousreply 476March 7, 2016 1:26 PM

Hasn't she gone back to just Zenk yet?

by Anonymousreply 477March 7, 2016 1:29 PM

Colleen looks like Jill Farren Phelps. I wonder why she hasn't been hired by Y&R.

by Anonymousreply 478March 7, 2016 1:38 PM

E478

You need your eyes checked.

by Anonymousreply 479March 7, 2016 1:54 PM

Sometimes they have similar hair, R478, but the resemblance ends there.

by Anonymousreply 480March 7, 2016 4:30 PM

A lot of people had Zenk atop a short list as a replacement for Jess Walton when Walton hit a contract negotiation snag a few years ago. Zenk could've brought back the character's raw sexuality reminiscent of Brenda Dickson that Walton was never really able to conjure. A sexy Jill would be a major player on today Y&R if Zenk had taken the role.

by Anonymousreply 481March 7, 2016 6:10 PM

Saw an episode of ATWT where Zenk was listed as Colleen Zenk Crouch. Just how many times has she cheated/spread those legs? Sounds like her life is a better soap opera than old Babsy on World Turns.

by Anonymousreply 482March 8, 2016 12:17 AM

Her best look, by far:

James Douglas, who played Grant Coleman, has died at 86:

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 489March 18, 2016 9:42 PM

RIP James. I always thought they should've made Henry as Grant's son or grandson, which would have allowed James to easily slip back onto the canvas near the end of the show's run to reunite with Lisa. That would've given Eileen Fulton the send-off she so deserved.

by Anonymousreply 490March 18, 2016 9:55 PM

I wonder how many of these former soap stars still jones to get any role that opens up on the few soaps that are left. Must be depressing.

by Anonymousreply 491March 18, 2016 9:57 PM

One time Grant came back was for ATWT's 30th and he had brief interaction with Lisa who was dating Earl at the time.

I believe Harding Lemay really liked having him on AW as Elliot Carrington; he referred later -- not by name -- to an actor who left the show and was hired for more money on another P&G show. That fits with the time he became Grant on ATWT. Here's a scene from 50 years of Soaps featuring Eileen and James and the great bitch who played Joyce.

by Anonymousreply 492March 19, 2016 4:31 AM

I always thought Grant was Lisa's true love (not counting Bob).

They should have definitely brought him back for a few days at the end.

Grant could have swept Lisa off her feet and they could have left on an around the world trip.

by Anonymousreply 493March 19, 2016 6:46 AM

Aw, wasn't Eileen just lovely in that segment? You could tell she was having a wonderful time presenting that clip. And the Robert Redford line!!! That was the Dobsons, correct?

by Anonymousreply 494March 20, 2016 9:36 PM

Watched ORDINARY PEOPLE on encore Saturday evening and caught Elizabeth Hubbard's name in the end credit scroll but never noticed her while watching the movie, so rewound through it and caught her in the party scene. There was never a clear shot of her from the front, just from the side, and I believe she only had one line, so I found it odd she was listed in the end credits along with others who had a more substantial part.

by Anonymousreply 495March 21, 2016 4:47 PM

She was in more than 1 scene, douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 496March 21, 2016 8:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 497March 22, 2016 12:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 498March 25, 2016 4:04 AM

My favorite Lucinda scene of all time from this clip, at the 1:58 mark. Lucinda shrieks at Ambrose over Ellie Snyder potentially coming between a Craig and Sierra reunion.

"WAAAAAIT FOR IT!!!"

Yeah, if Breen really wants to peddle the "I was fired" story he is in for a world of lawsuits.

by Anonymousreply 501March 27, 2016 2:30 PM

I only heard recently that Breen wasn't fired -- that he chose to leave. I'm open to that being the truth. Who knows? I wouldn't have given up a job that paid and had healthcare, however.

R499, the Thanksgiving miracle of Sierra's return was brilliant. Having her presumed dead opened up opportunities story-wise for Craig; once his portrayer, the marvelous Scott Bryce, chose to leave the show it was ideal to bring Sierra (Finn Carter) back to usher him off the canvas.

The episode prior to this -- Lucinda seeing Sierra alive was one of my favorites. I swear Liz Hubbard is adlibbing questions to Finn in character about where she's been and I see Finn keeping pace nicely coming up with answers. I think she was one of the actresses who handled Liz's adlibs much better than others did.

by Anonymousreply 502March 27, 2016 10:46 PM
Yeah, if Breen really wants to peddle the "I was fired" story he is in for a world of lawsuits.

Uh...from who? There's no Telenext left.

I don't think that's what his story is about, anyway. But ain't nobody home at P&G who would give three shits, even if it was.

by Anonymousreply 506March 28, 2016 2:03 PM

Being a "born again Christian" married to a Country singer is the only reason I can think of for Breen to peddle he doesn't know how he contracted AIDS.

He was an IV drug addict at the time.

It's not rocket science.

by Anonymousreply 507March 29, 2016 9:42 PM

I found a great YT channel you need to bookmark.

It's called "As the World Still Turns"

They have episodes from as far back as the 1970s.

They upload new episodes every night at 11pm

They're up to 1996.

by Anonymousreply 509March 30, 2016 2:38 PM

Been watching every night, r509. ATWST is awesome, but I live in fear that P&G will have those episodes taken down. They won't, will they? I mean, is it even worth their time?

by Anonymousreply 510March 30, 2016 2:41 PM

R506 didn't get it.

by Anonymousreply 512March 31, 2016 4:01 AM

R510

I'll be furious if they take them down.

DAYS is the absolute worst for doing that. I swear they employee someone who deletes stuff every day.

From the article at R517:
Weekly spilled the beans about a proposed storyline on ‘World Turns. Lisa Brown had gotten wind that the Snyder farm was going to burn down and, thinking that the Snyders were going to be written off, hit the panic button and leaked the info to Weekly, which ran it. Ironically, the plan had been to bring the far-flung Snyder characters back to the show. But, Laurie Caso was so pissed he killed the story.

Had Mimi started torchin' yet when Laurie Caso was still EP on WT?

by Anonymousreply 524April 3, 2016 1:51 AM

Terri Conn - or Terri Peck, these days (former ATWT's Katie) is now selling real estate. I think her devout Christian husband is too.

by Anonymousreply 525April 3, 2016 1:51 PM

Sadly, ATWT died when Doug died except for an occasional good arc (like Lisa suing Johnny Dixon; and some of the Hogan years).

by Anonymousreply 526April 3, 2016 8:20 PM

I almost WWed R526 for his comment on the Lisa v. Johnny Boy lawsuit. But nothing in the Hogan years amounted to anything but cow piss.

by Anonymousreply 527April 3, 2016 8:29 PM

Annie Parisse (sp?) is doing a bang up job on the new series Vinyl.

She looks fucking phenomenal.

Last week's episode even had AMC's Jill Larson.

So strange to hear her natural voice instead of Opal's

by Anonymousreply 528April 3, 2016 9:05 PM

R526 is right. The first few Hogan years weren't bad, I think he had some people working with him that helped guide things, but then it went off the rails.

by Anonymousreply 529April 4, 2016 11:23 PM

Does Annie Parisse have a starring role on the new HBO show? I always thought she was the bright spot of the Hogan years. I hated the Carly character and rooted for Julia to destroy her.

by Anonymousreply 530April 4, 2016 11:30 PM

R530

She's a supporting character.

She didn't enter the show until probably the third episodes.

Bobby Canavale and Olivia Wilde are the leads.

They're married and he runs a record company in the 70s

Annie plays an old lover of Canavale. She works for a rival record company and he woos her away from there by offering her a partnership in his company.

Annie looks amazing and her character is really dynamic.

Really good show.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 534April 6, 2016 3:34 AM

I don't think it's ever been specified publicly, R534, but I know that Doug also was going to woo Jeanne Cooper away from Y&R to play Jane's mother. THAT combo would have been amazing.

by Anonymousreply 535April 6, 2016 2:50 PM

God Bless, Jeanne and God rest her soul, but was Doug really going to make room for her on ATWT?

He already had Hubbard, Hays, Widdoes, Patsy Bruder was still popping up...and of course, Miss Lisa - Eileen Fulton herself!

Jeanne wasn't being used a lot in the early 90s; I think she had committed a big no-no by talking about the Braeden/Bergman fight (Eric attacking Peter) on a CBS news program around the Emmys and TPTB were pissed she opened her mouth.

But Jeanne was a smart cookie; she would know to stick with a long term thing at Y&R rather than jump ship.

by Anonymousreply 536April 6, 2016 4:55 PM

Yeah, I can't imagine Jeanne would have liked ATWT very much, she would have been one of many. And she would have likely been a short term character, running a year or two.

Still, a delicious idea.

by Anonymousreply 537April 6, 2016 5:24 PM

Jeanne claimed that she wanted to leave Y&R for ATWT, because working on the latter would allow her to go back to the stag/Broadway. That's what she said, don't shoot the messenger.

by Anonymousreply 538April 6, 2016 5:34 PM
the latter would allow her to go back to the stage/Broadway ...

When did JC do any stage work in NY on Broadway?

by Anonymousreply 539April 7, 2016 1:48 AM

Mary Kay Adams said once people in show biz say all the time 'oh, yeah, I'll create a part for you' and that Marland said that to her once at a P&G party; she was very pleased when he actually came through with Neal Alcott; I'm not sure if the original plan was for Neal to be killed off, which happened around the time Marland died.

His death really was the end of ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 552April 14, 2016 10:43 PM

Mary Kay never should have left ATWT; as Lucinda's sister, she had YEARS in her and in that role.

She never should have left GL either. India would have stayed till the end and we might have been spared (God Bless her) Marj's heavy wheezing "ALLLANNN!"

I say 'never,' but hey, it's her life. she can do whatever she wants. I just really liked her acting.

India's last scene with Phillip was nice; it showed they'd developed a friendship of sorts; she still loved him. He accepted her. She says "I could Olivia a run for her money" - that simple line had so many levels.

The producers and writers were nuts not to go for more with her, but if she didn't want to stay...

I hear she teaches sign language now.

by Anonymousreply 553April 15, 2016 1:09 AM

Mary Kay was and is fabulous. I agree, India had so much life in her, and we didn't even know who Neal was.

As much as I loved the whole Liz Hubbard/Mary Kay/Terry Lester thing on screen, the chemistry of the three of them, I'm not really sure I ever "got" why that storyline came to be. Or just got "it" in general. I mean, yes, I understood the story. But some of it just didn't click for me. And sad that almost everyone except for her darling Lily (and Sierra) seemed to slip away from Lucinda.

by Anonymousreply 554April 15, 2016 1:30 AM

I think the power of the Neal Alcott character was that she was like an angel on this earth, seemingly a perfect person, and as such she could not have stayed long. Her function was to change Lucinda's nature and make her more lovable. It would have been wonderful to have MKA do both P&G soaps simultaneously and have the characters flit in and out of the shows. Maybe they could have turned out to be twins, or would that have been too absurd? India would have been horrified if her natural birth mother was poverty stricken.

by Anonymousreply 555April 15, 2016 1:53 AM

on paper, Lester, Adams and Hubbard sounds like GOLD and maybe it was Doug's death, which happened around this time, but something about the storyline never took off for me, either.

I so wish Mary Kay had stayed at GL; it would have been great if her birth mother had popped up. (Faye Dunaway in stunt casting?)

The Spauldings went through SO many recasts -- there were three Alans, four Alexandras (if you count Lydia Brice), four Alan-Michaels, two Amandas, two Phillips (or, as I like to say, there was just one, sorry John!),

by Anonymousreply 556April 15, 2016 6:13 AM

Mary Kay as Neal was fucking wonderful. She had a lovely relationship with Lucinda and a fun romance with Scott. The problems were that Terry Lester was not clicking with/against Lucinda or with a recast Emily. Royce should have died and Neal stayed on. But Mary Kay wanted out, Breen checked out, and Marland died.

by Anonymousreply 566May 4, 2016 5:33 PM

r566 They only had nine months notice they were being cancelled. And you expect them to have planned out an ending for the show in such a SHORT amount of time. You're really demanding too much.

And frankly, it was really inconsiderate of Helen to go and die on them before taping the final scene. Who would have expected a 91 year old woman to just die like that?!?

by Anonymousreply 567May 4, 2016 8:05 PM

Met Michael David Morrison at a gay bar in NYC in spring of 1990. We spent a memorable night at the Helmsley Windsor Hotel where I was staying while in the city. Didn't know he was on a soap until he said, the next morning, that he needed to hurry to the studio because he was shooting that day. I joked, "...last night's shooting didn't count?" A few weeks later he accompanied me to Radio City Music Hall for "Night of 100 Stars 3" (May of 1990). We stayed in touch intermittently and it was only later I learned that he was married. He had a son later on and I sent a card and gift to them. He was sweet, funny, very sexy and endowed, and also seemed troubled. The third time we met, he struck me as someone floundering in the ocean, desperately trying to grab a life preserver. He died way too young.
