I always wonder if Ryan Philippe has African ancestry in his past. I would not be surprised if Ryan has white-passing black ancestors.

On the East Coast, only NY, Massachussetts, NJ, CT, North Carolina and Florida have Native tribes around, the rest of the South eradicated them. Sean is from Georgia which is in the Black Belt.

As for Johnny Depp, "Depp is primarily of English descent, with some French, German, and Irish ancestry. He is descended from a French Huguenot immigrant (Pierre Dieppe, who settled in Virginia around 1700) and from colonial freedom fighter Elizabeth Key Grinstead (1630–1665), daughter of an English planter and his African slave."

R121 I agree but many people from that region, Kentucky, will claim Native American due to ignorance of their own heritage because their ancestors have been there so long, like since the 1600s/1700s. Johnny claimed NA for years until he embarrassed publicly when his genealogy came out and that he was in fact had some distant African ancestry.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | September 14, 2020 1:40 AM |
Lots of Irish men have dark features like George Clooney. The men of Irish descent I know who resemble George are not from Kentucky, they are native New Yorkers. Their descendants came directly from Ireland.
Many people do not have the physical features which are attributed to whatever their race and nationality are. Not all Irish people have light eyes and red or light hair, same for Germans and Swedes. Lots of German and Swedes have dark hair and brown eyes. I've noticed a lot of Black and white people look Hispanic and many mixed Black/white people, for some odd reason, have Asian eyes.
One of my grandfathers was a blond blue-eyed Sicilian, there was nothing in his background which pointed to him being anything other than a Sicilian. No German or Nordic ancestry. There are also lots of naturally red haired Italians, I have two in my family. One has bright red hair, the other has auburn hair. My other grandfather was Sicilian and North African, yet he looked 100% South Asian, he looked Indian, he had thick wavy black hair, slightly Asian shaped eyes and basic SA features.
Genes are weird, period.

[quote] Johnny claimed NA for years until he embarrassed publicly when his genealogy came out and that he was in fact had some distant African ancestry.
But as you say, Depp only claimed NA heritage because that is what he was told his entire life. Many mixed race people living in America during the time of slavery and Jim Crow passed as whatever their appearance would allow. It was not political, African ancestry was the difference between freedom and bondage.

R129 White-passing was a lot more common than we presumed. I think in states like South Carolina, Louisiana and Alabama, a certain percentage of the white population has some African blood. And a lot of black people in Louisiana especially Creoles could be mistaken for white in some other states. I think also the black/white mixture can create a mid-range appearance that can look Native American-ish to some which helps with passing, if you can't pass for white then you could pass for Native. People like Johnny Depp just repeat what they are told by family members. I didn't get the hate for Elizabeth Warren either since she is from Oklahoma, a state that has a lot of white-passing Natives running around. Warren was just repeating common family folklore. Also, the Lumbee tribe in North Carolina is actually a isolated ethnic group descended from white and black farmers who intermixed but claimed Native American to avoid discrimination.

I've posted this on here before. My Mother's side of the family is black, but they basically look white with a little bit of seasoning. My Mom always gets asked the "what are you question". People seem to think that she's either Mediterranean or Middle Eastern, but never black. It happens to me outside of the south, quite a bit, for some reason even though I think I present as black (I'm probably a shade lighter than Obama). My Mom says it's probably because of my hair. I get are you Hispanic a lot. A few times I've gotten Egyptian.
Anyway, after that digression, my Grandmother's sister moved to NYC in the 50s and passed. She lived life as a white woman. No one was the wiser and there would be no reason for anyone to suspect. Apparently, her NYC family had no clue about her until she and her husband returned for my Great Grandmother's funeral years later. I can only imagine what that conversation was like, but clearly he didn't care.
Later on my Mom, Dad, and I did 23 & Me, My Mom is like 10% African. My Dad is like 60% African. But for some weird reason I'm only 30%. And yes, he's my biological father.
Any way, I apologize for the long post, but I have first hand experience with a family member passing... And strange genetics.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | September 14, 2020 7:08 AM |
r134, Thanks for that post. It was very enlightening. (No pun intended). I certainly think that people of mixed race are likely to be healthier. The human race is actually descended from a tiny, rather inbred group (180,000 years ago or so), so we are all pretty vulnerable to unknown diseases (as the current pandemic is showing us). But even separations of 25,000 or 40,000 years (as current Africans were separated from all those who migrated out of Africa in the past hundred thousand years or so and in waves since), means that biological traits and immunities might have developed in one population and not the other, so that mixing them confers better immunity upon progeny and possibly better assortments of microflora. Sadly, history has also shown us that when one separated group meets up with another, diseases which one group has developed partial resistance to can completely devastate the other. Much more than half of indigenous populations in the western hemisphere died off of diseases like small pox, flu, typhus and measles which were introduced by Europeans to the continents.

[quote]Obama's mother was pure Irish. He was raised in an all-white environment. There actually isn't very much black about him.
Except his pure, black African father. Obama is also descended from slaves on his mother’s side. And he must have changed his speech cadence after moving to Chicago because he doesn’t sound like a white guy.

r149 I think he is so gorgeous. It may be primarily his sparkling personality and positivity that attracts me but I also think he is just adorable.

[quote]One of my grandfathers was a blond blue-eyed Sicilian,
given your Sicilian ancestry, surely you are aware of the island's history and that it was colonized by vikings 800+ years ago

[quote]What is [R64] smoking? This is nothing but a pathetic attempt to place dark-skinned black men beneath him in a racial hierarchy he's built in his own head. No one's checking for your lukewarm nondescript, tepidly ambiguous ass, boo.
I think he's a white, gay troll. Because if he were black he'd know light-skinned men aren't on top of any desirability hierarchy in the black community and these guys get ( often unfairly) labelled as effeminate. Masculinity is a big thing for black women, just like macho is in the Latino community.
