Romanian Prince Nicholas
Romania’s former King Michael has stripped his only grandson of his royal title, a move that has stunned Romanians. Michael said in a statement that he had withdrawn the royal titles and privileges from the popular Prince Nicholas, known for his dedication to ecology, cycling and literacy.
The king’s statement Monday said the royal family should be led by someone who is “modest, well-balanced and with moral principles,” sparking speculation, bewilderment and disappointment.

I thought Romania stripped both their titles. How can a King whose title has been stripped from him strip a title that doesn't exist?

Please. The Crown Princess Margareta, once the "king" is dead, will take over as pretender, and reinstate her nephew to his former place as heir. They get along well.
Not that any of this matters in a constitutionally anti-monarchical nation.
One wonders what Nicky actually did, though. Since it's not like this family has ever been without its outrageous scandals, Margareta included.

r17 the rumor is that he came out to the family and it is alleged that's the reason his grandfather the king stripped him of titles but there is also the rumor that it was other family members vying for the chance to be king or queen somehow manipulated their way into causing him to be stripped of his titles and not because of his rumors of him being gay.

If I am not hopelessly confused I met Nicky and his slightly younger brother, maybe nine years ago. It was at a fairly large party where I was a plus one and not important to anyone. But they didn't seem to know many people either. While my companion networked I more or less bumped into them, they were utterly adorable and very charming (as well as cute and much younger than most people there including me) and sort of played off of one another like a comedy team, naughtily commenting to me on various guests who I either didn't know at all, or only knew from newspapers. I went from wondering if sneaking out would end my friendship forever with my friend (with whom I got into some interesting parties, since she was a dyke who hated humanity but got a kick out of me, a male). I stayed and was very sorry to say goodbye to them, realizing that of course I'd never see them again.

R1 Romanian is no longer a monarchy, it is a presidential republic but like many countries in Europe, it still has a Royal Family.
Countries likes Greece, Italy, Portugal, France, Germany, Russia etc. abolished their monarchies long ago but all those countries still have Royal Families. Some countries like Greece have very hostile relations with their royals (The Greek Royals were only recently allowed to return to Greece to live part-time very privately). Other countries like Romania are still republics but their royals actually play a social royal in their country. Serbia is still a republic but it has all but restored the monarchy. Crown Prince Alexander of Serbia is now treated as the country's defacto head of state.

R49, As with the Greeks, it was only in 2002 that the male Savoy royals were allowed to return to Italy. Today, the Savoy heir Emmanuele Filiberto, who styles himself Prince of Piedmont and Venice, makes a living as a television personality, having won the prized trophy on "Ballando con le stelle" (Italy's "Dancing with the Stars").

Romania, in its monarchical years, had numerous scandals involving Crown Prince Carol openly cheated on his wife, and later renounced the throne in favor of his son, then later reclaimed it in a coup. He eventually abdicated.
Queen Mary of Great Britain, when told about the abdication plans of her son, Edward VIII, was appalled and famously stated "Really, this might be Romania." I use that line all the time in the face of any adversity. I know, "Mary!"

The reason that Prince Nicholas lost his title is that he tried to persuade a one-night stand to have an abortion. She decided to keep the baby and raise it alone. One of King Michael's daughters was arrested for running a cockfighting (yes, Mary!) ring with her boyfriend here in the US. Another daughter is married to a tall, handsome and crooked arriviste named Radu Duda who has adopted the family's Hohenzollern name and is trying to ease Prince Nicholas out of the line of privilege. It was recently discovered that King Michael owes millions in Romanian tax.

Romania is never going to restore its monarchy, so the line of succession does not matter. But the current heir to the throne is Princess Margareta, and she is past childbearing years. When she dies, her sister Elena will inherit the position, and she could easily restore Nicholas, who is her eldest child.
The reason for Nicholas's fall has been leaked: he fathered an illegitimate child.

R128 A number of opinion polls have put support for restoration of the monarchy at between 45 - 61%, and the Romanian government is reported to be considering a referendum on the subject.
Elsewhere in Eastern Europe, Serbian support for its monarchy is between 39 - 64 %, Montenegro has virtually restored theirs in 2011, and it recently emerged that when Albania voted not to restore its monarchy in 1997 by 65%, the government (ex communists) had rigged the vote and restoration had actually won by 67%.
So there is actually support for monarchy in some parts of Europe, in a nutshell.

Some comments above include gypsy references, but Romania is not the country of origin of Romani gypsies. India is.
[quote]Genetic findings appear to confirm that the Romani "came from a single group that left northwestern India about 1,500 years ago". Genetic research published in the European Journal of Human Genetics "revealed that over 70% of males belong to a single lineage that appears unique to the Roma". They are a dispersed people, but their most concentrated populations are located in Europe, especially Central, Eastern and Southern Europe (including Turkey, Spain and Southern France). The Romani arrived in Mid-West Asia and Europe around 1,000 years ago.
