What he didn't tell me was that I would have to take out a second mortgage to buy them. Why are cashews so expensive?
My doctor told me to eat a few cashews every day
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 16, 2022 12:02 AM |
Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby, OP? It sells nuts cheaper than most. Why did your doctor recommend cashews?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 3, 2015 3:05 AM |
Jesus. If cashews are so EXPENSIVE, eat a fucking Snickers. See what that accomplishes. Who said eating healthy is CHEAP?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 3, 2015 3:10 AM |
[quote]My doctor told me to eat a few cashews every day
Why?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 3, 2015 3:14 AM |
If it's only a few each day surely that won't break you?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 3, 2015 3:14 AM |
Make sure you get the no salt ones, OP. And the store brand/generic ones are a lot cheaper. Also the "non whole" ones are a lot cheaper, but don't taste as good.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 3, 2015 3:16 AM |
Almonds and Pecans are good for you too.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 3, 2015 3:16 AM |
66% of this unsaturated fatty acid content within Cashews are heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, similar to those found in olive oil. Studies of diabetic patients show that monounsaturated fat, when added to a low-fat diet, can help to reduce high triglyceride levels.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 3, 2015 3:21 AM |
They aren't expensive at all.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 3, 2015 3:30 AM |
Go to Rite Aid or whatever your local chain drug store is. They sell their own brands of cashews cheap.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 3, 2015 3:35 AM |
I have a history of heart problems in my family and my doctor what I could do to make sure that everything stays fine, and he suggested some cashews everyday, added to my already low fat /high exercise diet.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 3, 2015 3:45 AM |
You're on a high exercise diet? Sounds delicious.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 3, 2015 3:50 AM |
Eat Brazil nuts and get radioactive as a bonus, OP!
Yum!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 3, 2015 3:52 AM |
They go on sale at places like CVS, Walgreen's and Rite-Aid all the time. Stock up.
Or maybe your doctor was just trying to find a diplomatic way of saying "Nuts, to you!"
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 3, 2015 6:06 AM |
Wallnuts are even more expensive.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 3, 2015 8:39 AM |
Traders or Sprouts bulk bins. They're still expensive though.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 3, 2015 8:55 AM |
R14 Here in SoCal they've actually started robbing truckloads of nuts and selling them.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 3, 2015 8:58 AM |
Cashews are expensive because a) they're in short supply, and b) cashews belong to the same family as poison ivy and poison sumac, and in order to elimate the toxins that can make you seriously ill, they're put through a labor-intensive roasting process before shelling. This also must be done outdoors because the raw roasting cashews release gases that can impair breathing, sometimes fatally.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 3, 2015 9:53 AM |
Healthy food is in an investment in your health. When you are healthy you will spend a lot less on hospital bills, doctor consultations, pharmaceutical drugs, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 3, 2015 10:20 AM |
No guarantees of that, r18.
Proving god does or doesn't exist is on the same order.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 3, 2015 12:41 PM |
Considering the laborious handwork needed to process the nuts, as noted above in r17, I'm surprised cashews are as INexpensive as they are. Buy the best you can afford, OP, it's a good and healthy treat. Cashew butter is amazingly toothsome.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 3, 2015 12:43 PM |
I simply substitute a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup every day.
My doctor didn't tell me not to.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 3, 2015 12:50 PM |
Find a large package at a reasonable price. Take out a small amount for now and keep the rest in a Ziplock bag in the freezer, since nuts tend to go bad in a couple of months.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 3, 2015 12:53 PM |
That's a few cashews every day, OP, not a few cans every day.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 3, 2015 12:53 PM |
raw nuts are expensive but stick to the orders and eat a few a day. I know it'll be hard not eating it all at once but you need to practice discipline.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 3, 2015 12:56 PM |
Aldi's, people.....Aldi's!
Huge selection of nuts at low prices.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 3, 2015 12:58 PM |
I didn't know you could toast almonds in the microwave in about a minute. My sister showed me.
1. Handful of raw almonds on a flat plate.
2. MW on HIGH for 45 secs.
3. Stir around with your fingers.
4. MW again on HIGH for 25 secs.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 3, 2015 2:16 PM |
Because of the California drought, almonds and cashews are now the same price at Whole Foods (8.99 a pound).
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 3, 2015 2:49 PM |
California walnuts will be sky high too.
As will California pistachios.
Nut trees are the water buffaloes of the arboreal world.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 3, 2015 4:36 PM |
It is better to eat a variety of different nuts rather than the same one over and over OP. And yes, while nuts are certainly healthy they are also high in calories so be careful about over indulging.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 3, 2015 4:38 PM |
"This also must be done outdoors because the raw roasting cashews release gases that can impair breathing, sometimes fatally."
Amatuers. Mine are guaranteed to be fatal.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 3, 2015 5:27 PM |
There are many things you should always buy at Trader Joes. Nuts are one of them.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 3, 2015 6:41 PM |
A ldi's is where "bargain" shoppers shop. I will never go there.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 3, 2015 6:47 PM |
I like getting them at CVS when they’re on sale.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 2, 2021 2:48 AM |
Almonds and walnuts I've heard about the health benefits of. Cashews? Doctor recommended, yet? That's a new one for me. I love them but I always understood them to be calorie bombs without the benefit.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 2, 2021 2:57 AM |
I love cashews and don’t care how much they cost.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 2, 2021 3:07 AM |
Fancy whole organic are the healthiest, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 2, 2021 3:14 AM |
The healthiest nuts are in order:
Almonds
Brazil Nuts
Cashews
Pistachios
Walnuts
Peanuts
As per my cardiologist, it's preferable to eat them unsalted and raw.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 2, 2021 3:15 AM |
I couldn't attach the link for some reason, but Yupik Nuts organic raw cashews are $22.98 for 2.2 lbs on Amazon. They are very good and I think the price isn't bad.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 2, 2021 3:16 AM |
R37, I think pumpkin and sunflowers seeds are very healthy too. Yes, unsalted and raw are best.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 2, 2021 3:17 AM |
Cashews look like little baby penises.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 2, 2021 3:35 AM |
Just steal them from Walmart like normal people.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 2, 2021 3:55 AM |
Is your doctor Dr. Oz?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 2, 2021 6:52 AM |
This is what cashews look like on the tree and they are not a nut, but a drupes, I shit you not.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 2, 2021 7:04 AM |
OP types poor.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 2, 2021 7:08 AM |
OP Make sure you get the unsalted ones that are harvested by virgins under a full moon.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 2, 2021 7:43 AM |
Store brand nuts are cheaper for a reason. They are usually of substandard quality and older harvests. The nutritional value is nearly the same, but the taste is not.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 2, 2021 8:39 AM |
I grab my nuts at Costco.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 2, 2021 8:44 AM |
^^^ can I grab your nuts at Costco?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 2, 2021 10:51 AM |
They’re not that expensive.
Macadamia nuts are.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 2, 2021 11:05 AM |
OP Cashews are fattening and full of carbs. They are one of the worst nuts out there.
You should be eating about a dozen walnuts & almonds per day - they are the best by far in limited amounts.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 2, 2021 11:13 AM |
This is the first time I heard a doctor prescribing a cashew. I never thought it's good for your health. I actually thought it's bad for you.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 2, 2021 11:18 AM |
This is one of the 2015 threads being bumped and if I recall, cashews were briefly considered a heart-healthy food. Or maybe OP had a copper deficiency.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 2, 2021 11:26 AM |
OP, go suck on a penny instead, it only costs a penny, even you should be fine with that cheap bastard that you are.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 2, 2021 1:45 PM |
I splurged once and got the expensive cashews from Nuts.com and I didn't think they were better than the generic kind
by Anonymous | reply 54 | July 2, 2021 1:55 PM |
R13- What really happened is- OP walked in to his doctor's ( actually a SHRINK) office one day wearing nothing but plastic wrap and when the doctor saw OP he said- I CAN CLEARLY SEE YOU'RE NUTS!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 2, 2021 2:03 PM |
Again the cashew is not a nut and Oat Milk is not milk and should be clearly labeled as such.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 2, 2021 2:20 PM |
Oat Drink?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 2, 2021 8:34 PM |
Oat beverage.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 2, 2021 8:38 PM |
Almonds are healthier.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | July 2, 2021 8:40 PM |
Oat-ade
by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 2, 2021 8:44 PM |
A Brazilian friend always got annoyed when people said "cashews." She'd say "THose aren't cashews. They're cashew nuts." We thought she was just being pissy until she told us that to Brazilians, "cashew" is a fruit, and the nut is just a weird-looking part of it. I had no idea.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | July 2, 2021 8:52 PM |
haha r41 beat me to it. Missed that.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | July 2, 2021 8:53 PM |
r43, that is.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | July 2, 2021 8:54 PM |
R61 i knew that, but is the fruit edible?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | July 3, 2021 12:40 AM |
R61 is the fruit even edible?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | July 3, 2021 12:41 AM |
Life's and Aldi's carry them for a reasonable price, if you have any around you. They have them in 2 differ ent sections, packaged differently. (Think baking and specialty aisles.)
by Anonymous | reply 66 | July 3, 2021 1:45 AM |
Life's should be Lidl's.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | July 3, 2021 3:04 AM |
I made peanut butter in my food processor and it was so much better than storebought. I'm going to try cashew butter next :)
by Anonymous | reply 68 | July 20, 2021 3:45 AM |
I ate too many and fucked up my kidneys. Had to drink a ton of water and apple cider vinegar to cleanse.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | July 20, 2021 3:53 AM |
R19, there are more guarantees than if you eat a crappy diet. I see a lot of medical records in my work. The amount of chronic disease is high. Most of these patients eat the standard American diet with too much sugar and processed foods. Diet can improve or reverse a lot of chronic conditions. The doctors I know who use a dietary approach are able to consistently decrease or cut out the prescription drugs patients take, while reducing or eliminating the symptoms.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | July 20, 2021 4:02 AM |
R68 fascinating
by Anonymous | reply 71 | July 20, 2021 4:04 AM |
Yes, the fruit is edible. I visited a plantation on the island of St. Lucia years ago. The fruit is very sweet. I found it disgusting (I don't like the nuts, either) but the locals enjoyed it. I gather it is too fragile to export, so it has little value. A typical jar of the nuts is basically the entire production of a tree (or two) for a year -which is why they are so expensive. They are also hard to grow outside warm, tropical climates.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | July 20, 2021 4:23 AM |
Lol R2. That's the depressing thing and why the poor are usually obese. It's cheap to eat unhealthy, expensive to eat healthy.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 15, 2022 11:47 PM |
If you only eat a couple a day it wouldn't be that expensive. But hard to refrain from over-indulging. Nuts are one of those delicious snack foods that I just can't leave alone. Especially macadamia nuts, which are ridiculously expensive.
