I never really paid attention to him (never watch GLEE), but his red carpet gig at this year's Tonys was very telling. First of all, he practically shrieked when he saw Chita RIvera and screamed her name ("Chita!"), then he told Vanessa Hudgens that he has a 'man crush' on her co-star Corey Cott, then he fangirled over Bernadette Peters, and in the actual telecast he seemed to flirt with Joe Manganiello, and the way Criss was sitting (legs crossed, hands folded on lap) seemed very gay. I saw Hedwig today. Now I will preface this with, I saw the original production of Hedwig downtown with John Cameron Mitchell. I always thought this was an unnecessary revival. It was nothing more than a vanity project for NPH and an excuse for the theatre community to hand him a Tony.

This being said, I went in expecting the worst and ended up pleasantly surprised. Darren was no better or worse than any clips I've seen of NPH. I did find him engaging to watch on stage and he was charming. I still think this revival was unnecessary though as, other than the updated pop culture references, there was nothing new in it. And if you're familiar with the show it totally fucks up the timeline as Hedwig is supposed to be about 28 when the Berlin Wall came down. That would put the character at about 54 now and there was no way he was playing her as 54.

Anywho....

Back to Darren - aesthetically it was all worth at the end when he's running around in those black booty shorts. He looks good - really good. Looks more toned than some of the pics that have been posted. His arms and legs looked great. I was tempted to try and snap a picture at the curtain call, but couldn't bring myself to do it - more so for theater etiquette reasons than anything else.
