Marcia Cross: 10 years after the controversy
What do you think about her now? Gay and in the closet or a wrong call? Will we ever know the truth?
Here's what happened 10 years ago according to the Datalounge Wikipedia site:
[italic]DataLounge was in the news in February 2005, when a "friendly spy" claiming to work at the ABC television network, posted that actress Marcia Cross would come out as gay in an upcoming issue of The Advocate. Within days the rumor had spread like wildfire and garnered mentions in the media including CNN and Fox Television's Los Angeles affiliate, before Cross denied the rumors in an interview with Barbara Walters and her co-hosts on The View. The Advocate published an article chronicling this incident. [3] Less than six months later, Cross announced her engagement to stockbroker Tom Mahoney, leading to widespread speculation on DataLounge that Cross -- believed by most posters to be a closeted lesbian, owing to both direct accusations made by gossip columnist and DataLounge user Michael Musto and the fact that she had not, to anyone's public knowledge, dated a man since her then-boyfriend Richard Jordan died of a brain tumor in 1993 -- had entered into a relationship of convenience at the urging of her PR team in order to squash the gay rumors about her.[/italic]

It's hard to say with women because their sexuality is not as hard-wired. It's more of an emotional orientation than a sexual one. The reality is that being 'born this way' tends to apply more to males than females. I can think of a dozen examples of self identifying lesbians who spent more than 2 decades in the lesbian lifestyle and are today settled down in relationships with men. These were not your LUG (lesbian until graduation) types. In fact, a couple were gold stars who came out in their teens, but in their 30s (perhaps for biological clock reasons) got married to men and are now doing the '2.6 kids' thing. Bill De Blasio's wife is the classic example of this. This is somewhat of an 'inconvenient truth' for the LGBT party-liners because the premise they've always championed is that sexuality is static and genetically predetermined and therefore immutable. They're better off saying everyone has the right to love/have sex with whomever they choose without having to provide justification for it.

Supposedly her hubby is gay, too.

R2, from my experience, feminism is what causes many women to identify as lesbians for a certain period of time and then end up marrying men.
When I first heard about De Blasio's wife, I immediately knew she had been involved in a feminist group in the 70s and it turns out she was.
These women are not lesbians but they believe that their problems in life are caused by men so they often end up being feminist activists for a while until they meet a man who is not as bad as the others.
Feminism has ruined heterosexuality and lesbianism unfortunately.

R4, right-wingers like to bash feminism for everything they don't like but the vast majority of feminists do not identify as lesbian. Only 1% of women identify as gay, significantly more identify as feminist

R4, none of the women I know who have 'switched teams' were particularly feminist or involved in feminist causes. Furthermore, aren't you just question begging by dismissing anyone who goes straight as not 'really lesbian to begin with'? How long does someone have to be a lesbian to qualify for that designation? Suppose a woman is a lesbian for 30 years and then meets and marries a guy, was she just confused for the previous 3 decades? Was she really straight that whole time, but thought she was gay, or is she really gay, but now thinks she's straight?

R10 and anyone who agrees with him is an idiot.
When posters say something like that it means someone they want to be straight isn't and the frau fantasy they were living in is now ruined.
I'm also tired of the apathetic attitude toward coming out. It still fucking matters and anyone who stay closeted just for the sake of being a celebrity is a coward.

The answer is that they were bisexual the whole time, R14.

R19, so you're saying they were bisexual the whole time, but didn't know it? How does that work? When Bill De Blasio's wife wrote an article entitled I AM A LESBIAN, was she hiding a secret attraction to men?
Also, R4, if feminism ruined lesbianism, the Michfest womyn sure didn't get the memo.

It's obviously some type of repression, R20. Not that I get why women would repress heterosexual tendencies, but maybe it's like someone else said; they have some type of unresolved issue with men.

What I don't understand is why the gossip caught on in the mainstream. "Insiders" post gossip here every day, what was so special about that little tidbit? It makes me think there might have been something to it if so many networks were willing to report on it. It seemed plausible enough to them that Marcia Cross would come out as a lesbian.

R18, And I'm tired of your apathy towards the very real glass ceiling for celebrity status, is moot or not part and parcel of the same phenomenon bringing you the glass closet. Those who reach celebrity status do so because they have a "palatable" image and persona appealing to the widest possible number of people. There are deeper root causes for your not ranting over the extant non-civilians who have come out, and have failed to eradicate homophobia entirely from this earth.
Sure, rant about the closetcases once in a while, but devoting enormous energy and venom to them, when the same time and effort can be spent on helping the out celebrities to reach even wider, higher status of shining, virtuous "Heroism", and doing outreach to your neighbors and kins through each gay's own personal network (that has a far more affecting, personable "human face" of struggle than some faraway celebrity easily shut out by the in-group of a stubborn community) - is ignoring what really "fucking matters".

Totally agree with R29, again. Not sure if it's the same poster as R10 - but that's right.
R18 why are you entitled to know someone's sexuality just because they are a celebrity? It' IS a problem when they are voting against gay rights or speaking out against them, but Marcia Cross doesn't do that.
There is a generational divide here too - over a certain age, you've had more struggles with the closet than people born after ~1985.

"...why are you entitled to know someone's sexuality just because they are a celebrity?"
Well put R30.
A person’s decision to come out of the closet is a personal one and it is their choice and their choice alone to make. I understand the feeling that all gays should be out and proud but sometimes it isn’t that simple.
I believe things will get better in the near future and there soon will not be a need for anyone to be in the closet. Until then let’s just try and respect that everyone is on their own journey.

R14, it has been MY experience that a lot of former lesbians were not lesbian to begin with and started identifying as lesbians because they were involved in a feminist organization or because like someone else said, they had unresolved issues with men. De Blasio's wife was a 70s feminist.
Feminism has ruined women and lesbianism even for those who were not actively involved in feminism. Women started blaming men for all of their problems. If they were unhappy in life it was because of patriarchy. So many women ended up in lesbian relationships because of this. If men were the problem, then women were the solution. That's why we've always had a lot of fucked up lesbians in our community. They're not here because they love women, but because they hate men and the heterosexual society. Feminism helped create this problem. Instead of having women take responsibility for their own lives and their own failures, everything became about men and patriarchy.
A lot of lesbians dress like men and don't take care of their appearance because feminism has taught them that femininity is a patriarchal social construct. Feminism has taught lesbians to not only hate men but to hate themselves as feminine women.

Ah, R36 must be the lesbian who bitches incessantly about how there are never any beautiful lipstick lesbians for her to drool over.
Not that I'm not impressed at R36's ability to talk about the patriarchal social construct in the same sentence that she declares that there is such a thing as "dressing like a man," but it's pretty clear they're a troll. Anyone who says "feminism is what prevents women from being as pretty as I want them to be" is, by definition, trolling.

DL has managed to become even more stupid. 2015 and people are still defending the closet. And not for regular people, but for fucking celebrities. So what are you, r29, r31, and r35? Frau cunts who know shit about homosexuality or self-loathing gays who rationalize bigotry because you want to fit in?
When you become a celebrity, you lose that "personal choice" timing. There is nothing wrong with being gay and staying closeted for the sake of fame not only makes you a coward but also someone reinforcing the idea that being gay is shameful.

What a croc of shit. Feminism was about leveling the playing field for women.
I will forever be grateful for the working women (and some of the men) of the 'Madmen' generation and before for helping to pave the way and open doors for me. It must have been really tough for them in the work place and in life.

I think there's an even simpler explanation. Some lesbians who want to have children think it's easier to just "suck it up" (no pun intended) and enter a relationship with a man. They can tell themselves that the kid will have a traditional father figure, and they can also bypass costly IVF procedures. Wasn't the movie with DL faves Annette Bening and Julianne Moore about this? Seriously?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 11, 2015 8:56 PM

R41, I think that's a huge part of it. Most of the former lesbians I know switched to men in their mid to late 30s. This came from what they probably saw as the clock running down on their reproductive abilities and a strong desire for the family and white picket fence lifestyle. I know some who switched in their 40s and don't have kids. Most of them say it's because the dating options for 40s+ gay women are so limited that they would have to be single indefinitely unless they opened up their dating options to include men. They say that men are far easier to meet and date, so it ends up being the path of least resistance.
