Anthony Perkins

Does anyone else think he was kind of cute in "Psycho"?

by Anonymousreply 38August 5, 2018 1:33 AM

I don't think Psycho would have worked as well if the character of Norman had been played by an un-attractive actor.

by Anonymousreply 1November 29, 2014 5:32 AM

he was very handsome and sexy.

by Anonymousreply 2November 29, 2014 5:33 AM

Oh yeah. I bit scrawny for my tastes (I'd take hunky John Gavin first) but a very cute face.

by Anonymousreply 3November 29, 2014 5:34 AM

Did you watch Marnie on TCM today too? Damn Sean Connery was hot.

by Anonymousreply 4November 29, 2014 5:39 AM

Yes, he was cute, sweet, and rather handsome. He's so typecast as Norman Bates that people tend to forget that before "Psycho", he usually played puppyish male ingenues. He actually started the film by doing a version of his usual sweet, sad-eyed, mildly troubled young innocent... and, well. People must have been totally shocked.

He should have been nominated for an Oscar, he was quite brilliant. But the AMPAS seemed to have a policy of disregarding Hitchcock's actors.

Janet Leigh got nominated though. I think there are other Hitchcock actors nominated too.

by Anonymousreply 6November 29, 2014 5:53 AM

Loved him. His look is totally, 'my type'.

by Anonymousreply 7November 29, 2014 12:48 PM

His vulnerability is what made the character of Norman work.

by Anonymousreply 8November 29, 2014 1:38 PM

He could be had in the slutty-sleazy 70's haze of NYC. A good friend of mine hooked up with him.

What am I, chopped liver?

by Anonymousreply 10November 29, 2014 1:54 PM

The way he walks? sashays? up the stairs is a classic moment. Deliberate or his normal gait?

by Anonymousreply 11November 29, 2014 2:02 PM

When he began in Hollywood he was adorable and totally unique! There was never another actor in film with his quality.

by Anonymousreply 12November 29, 2014 2:24 PM

r3, may have been scrawny, but he did have "hidden assets."

by Anonymousreply 13November 29, 2014 2:30 PM

He was considered kind of a heartthrob/teen idol in the 50s. Psycho totally changed his image.

Claude Rains (supporting nod for NOTORIOUS), Michael Chekhov (supporting actor nod for SPELLBOUND), Joan Fontaine (won best actress for SUSPICION; best actress nod for REBECCA), Laurence Olivier (best actor nod for REBECCA), Judith Anderson (supporting actress nod for REBECCA).

I wonder why Janet Leigh went supporting. I mean, I can see it, with her limited screen time and what-not. But at the time, that category was usually reserved for starlets and character actors, and Leigh was pretty much established.

Anne Baxter won Supporting Actress for THE RAZOR'S EDGE, but four years later she refused to be "relegated" to the supporting category for ALL ABOUT EVE, where she might've easily won. But her pride was too great.

by Anonymousreply 16November 29, 2014 6:16 PM

One cannot possibly be a supporting actress playing the eponymous role, r16.

by Anonymousreply 17November 29, 2014 7:15 PM

I think he was adorable, and he's set the template for the kind of guy I like -- clean cut, boyish, preppy/nerdy.

by Anonymousreply 18November 29, 2014 7:20 PM

Speak for yourself, R17/Anne!

by Anonymousreply 19November 29, 2014 7:50 PM

Well,he had a budding singing career and was even marketed as something of a teen idol ,but of course after `Psycho` this couldn`t go on .

by Anonymousreply 20November 29, 2014 7:56 PM

He also played a mad man of a photographer in "Mahogany."

First came upon Anthony Perkins via listening to the recording of Evening Primrose. Then saw him on TV in films such as Murder on the Orient Express, Is Paris Burning?, Catch 22, and so forth. Each and every time could not help thinking what a cool and tall glass of water AP was.

With the advent of the Internet have been able to "Google" up many of his other works and of course images and the last comment stands. In his day the guy was very attractive in that lanky, tall WASP sort of way.

Have never seen either version of Psycho

He was smoking hot in “Fear Strikes Out” (1957)!

by Anonymousreply 23November 30, 2014 3:13 AM

--I agree in that he may have been handsome but at the same time too awkward looking or scary

by Anonymousreply 24November 30, 2014 3:14 AM

Oh I don't know.

Many tall and thin guys have trouble/need time to "grow into" themselves. Add to this Mr. Perkins was a very attractive young man and that just puts a bit more on his plate.

To all this we cannot forget he was questioning and or in the closet.

Have always felt Psycho placed AP into a narrow typecast range that he just couldn't totally break free. Major tragedy of course was HIV/AIDs.

He did have a lighter comedic side in his early career that was wonderfully showcased in Tall Story and The Matchmaker. He's quite adorable in both.

by Anonymousreply 26November 30, 2014 5:13 AM

Wide, gorgeous shoulders and a beautiful smile.

by Anonymousreply 27November 30, 2014 6:08 AM

Very handsome, and I was attracted to him like no other as a youngling.

Later, when I found myself instantly attracted to nutcases and violent people, I looked back and was rather frightened that it was obviously hard-wired into me when I was 5 and thought Tony Perkins was the most handsome man I'd ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 28November 30, 2014 6:33 AM

Mmm hmmmm.

Well that is one way of getting a man!

*LOL*

by Anonymousreply 32November 30, 2014 7:26 AM

I wanted to be like him when I was a teen!

by Anonymousreply 33December 1, 2014 11:27 PM

I've always thought he was very good-looking, especially in "Psycho."

by Anonymousreply 34December 1, 2014 11:35 PM

Perkins loved to eat shit and drink piss and call it sex. He was quite the average homosexual.

by Anonymousreply 35December 1, 2014 11:54 PM

Are you kidding, R35?

by Anonymousreply 36December 1, 2014 11:57 PM

OMG R35

by Anonymousreply 37August 5, 2018 1:20 AM

He had the starring role in a Frank Loesser musical called Greenwillow in 1959 or 1960. It wasn't a hit, although it ran for a bit, and he was very appealing in it.
