Picket Fences 1992-1996

Anyone remember this show? I'm watching episode 2, on the Green Bay Chopper right now,

I love the way Kathy Baker and Tom Skerritt interact. Kathy's got great comedic timing. IMDB says Kathy hasn't been working in a decade. I don't understand that.

Their boys are so cute. The oldest, Justin Shenkarow, is on our team, I think.

Costas Mandylor was such a hunk, but a terrible actor. He's been in a couple "Saw" movies since then, not much else.

I guess Fyvush Finkel was a one trick pony, but lots of fun.

It seemed so edgy, but things are only edgy once.

God, "on our team' is the most fucking stupid phrase ever.

No love for Lauren Holly??

by Anonymousreply 2October 20, 2014 3:49 AM

Holly Marie Combs played the oldest daughter. She shared a kiss with another woman on a very special episode early in the show.

by Anonymousreply 7October 20, 2014 3:58 AM

Kathy Baker played the murderous matriarch of a serial killing family on Criminal Minds a couple years ago.

Like Holly Marie Combs, Kathy and Tim Skerritt are always fun to watch. They have a way of rising above a mediocre-bad script.

by Anonymousreply 8October 20, 2014 3:58 AM

It was a great series. I never missed an episode.

Am surprised it was never syndicated. Or if it was, they certainly didn't do much advertising for it.

Costas Mandylor was so dreamy. But yes, he was not a great actor.

by Anonymousreply 9October 20, 2014 3:58 AM

What are you talking about OP? Baker has over two dozen IMDB credits since 2010.

There were a few episodes where Holly's birth mom appeared. That actress looked a lot like what Holly looks like now.

by Anonymousreply 14October 20, 2014 4:17 AM

I only saw episodes here and there, my mom loved it, but it seemed to change tone, rather drastically, a few times during its run.

by Anonymousreply 15October 20, 2014 4:19 AM

If I recall correctly, it really was running on fumes the last season or possibly two.

I had to watch an episode in school once, where the son played by Justin Shenkarow gets shot in school by another classmate. This was 1996, pre-Columbine and the 1997-1998 school shooting sprees, so at the time it seemed like an improbable situation. I don't remember much about the episode (i.e. what caused the shooting), but I do remember they feared the boy may have been paralyzed. There was a dramatic scene where the mother is pricking the boy's feet with a needle until he feels something, then there was a lot of rejoicing. It was cheesy as hell!

by Anonymousreply 22October 20, 2014 4:42 AM

I just met Costas at a horror movie con and he looked great (those lips are still succulent). He was personable and not as tall as I imagined. We talked about football and I took a photo with him.

Which Mandylor brother played the Catholic priest Samantha fucked on Sex & The City?

Kathy Baker was terrific last winter as the smart ass secretary to Walt Disney in "Saving Mr. Banks".

Fyvush Finkel is always working in NYC, doing off-Broadway plays and cabarets. After Picket Fences, he had a running job as a teacher on David E. Kelley's Boston Public, and then turned up often as a judge on The Practice and Boston Legal.

]quote]I'm watching episode 2, on the Green Bay Chopper right now,

What is a Green Bay Chopper?

by Anonymousreply 48October 20, 2014 1:39 PM

If I remember correctly, when it was developed it was influenced a bit by Twins Peaks and the early episodes had more of a quirky small town where sometimes spooky things happen (the Poltergeist lady worked in the office). By the second season, the town was having problems more in line with a bigger city and the show had a different feel (including but not limited to the writing off of the Poltergeist lady).

by Anonymousreply 49October 20, 2014 2:03 PM

writing off of the Poltergeist lady happened in season 3 due to budget cuts.

Leigh-Taylor Young was also affected by the cuts as she was dropped as well. But asked back for two guest appearances.

by Anonymousreply 50October 20, 2014 2:09 PM

I love that moment when Marlee Matlin (as the town's new mayor) finds the severed head of the previous mayor, holds it up and the first thing she says, "He's cute!" Then a flustered Tom Skerritt insists, "No, he is NOT cute!" The show was filled with weirdly funny little scenes like that.

by Anonymousreply 51October 20, 2014 7:33 PM

Just remembered another classic Skerritt line: "I REFUSE to allow cows to give birth to humans in my town!"

by Anonymousreply 52October 20, 2014 7:35 PM

P.S., Skeritt's Capt. Dallas was a lot more laid back then Sheriff Brock. I know that Capt. Dallas would allow humans to give birth to cows and wouldn't give it a second thought.

I was a kid when this show was on and my parents liked it. I remember cow having the human baby storyline and the Poltergeist lady. I can't remember all the details, but there was a storyline, in which a teacher of one of the sheriff's sons was outed as a male to female transsexual.

by Anonymousreply 55October 20, 2014 7:55 PM

Justin Shenkarow was in everything back then - I was a tween at the time and had watched him on the kids' show Eerie, Indiana with Omri Katz, who I had a crush on. He was apparently a huge dick on "Millionaire Matchmaker" or whatever it was. I remember some article about it from one of the women involved. I don't think he has worked in years.

Twin Peaks and its eccentric style had permeated everything on TV at that time: sitcoms, dramedies, children's programming. So we had Eerie, Northern Exposure, then shows like Picket Fences. It was all trying to capitalize on the progenitor, TP (which I am so glad is coming back). I think Picket Fences was also another David E. Kelley show. The proto-Ally McBeal. All his shows got too forced "quirky" for their own good, but I did love Kathy Baker and Tom Skerritt. My mother had had a huge thing for Skerritt since Alien and we would watch PF every week.

This was back when Lauren Holly had a career too. It's too bad about her. She was great on the show. Adam Wylie, the youngest boy, still does a lot of TV, voice work and theater and film. He was Jack in the Into the Woods revival on Bway a few years ago. Pings a lot.

Didn't the show end with the Sheriff and his wife getting a divorce? I didn't see it but I heard about it and thought it sounded grim as hell.

by Anonymousreply 56October 20, 2014 8:04 PM

r56 -- I thought Northern Exp came first...

by Anonymousreply 57October 20, 2014 8:12 PM

"Didn't Kathy Baker play Joan's long-suffering assistant in "Mommie Dearest"?"

Are you thinking of Rutanya Alda?

by Anonymousreply 58October 20, 2014 8:30 PM

The vibe is more Northern Exposure than Twin Peaks.

by Anonymousreply 59October 20, 2014 9:31 PM

This was another role Lauren Holly got from sleeping around. Sherry Lansing was fucking her in '91, got bored with her and sent her to Alice West as a "surprise" present for her birthday; Lauren delivers a cake to Alice, Alice lets her in, bam, Lauren's wearing nothing but her panties and a come fuck me look, so the story goes. David Kelly would tell that story perhaps bitter that he wasn't the one to casting couch her, and had a season one scene written in around Lauren Holly in a bikini with a birthday cake as an in-joke to humiliate her.

by Anonymousreply 60October 20, 2014 11:35 PM

R58 Thank you -- you're right. Not sure why I got them confused.

by Anonymousreply 67October 21, 2014 12:10 AM

R62 because of all the runaway production in Canada, Lauren Holly legally became a Canadian citizen.

Any TV or film shooting in Canada must have a certain number of Canadian actors in the cast to qualify for tax breaks.

Because Lauren Holly became a Canadian citizen, she qualifies. And is more likely to get acting jobs in Canadian shot projects than someone non-Canadian.

Why doesn't Tori Spelling try that as well. She would get more acting gigs because of it.

If it would have gone on another season, I suspect they would have. They had big problems at the end did not appear heading towards reconciliation. When the show got cancelled they did a series finale where it seems like they quickly solved all of the couples problems. It ended with Max and Kenny's wedding and if I remember correctly, the sheriff and his wife danced together and looked like they were going to try to work it out.

R93 lauren Holly was my first girl crush back in the 90’s. Does anyone have any stories about her? I loved her in the Bruce Lee Story, Dumb and Dumber, Beautiful Girls, ,any Given Sunday etc. the new plastic-surgeried Hallmark movie making Lauren Holly not so much.

Picket Fences was one of the best 90’s TV shows. Seasons 1-3 pushed the envelope of topics back in the day in a ln always quirky matter—plus it was the perfect mix of cop, Medical, law and family show. I loved Holly Marie Combs as the level -headed Kimberly as well. Season 4 sucked because David E.Kelley stopped writing for the show to work more on the new Chicago Hope and develop other series. I still think this and The Practice are his two best shows.

by Anonymousreply 99December 19, 2018 12:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 100December 19, 2018 12:21 AM

The first show I stumbled upon in the early 1990s was the one where the kids found a severed hand, and I was hooked.

I just rented episode 1 recently, and it was awful.

I loved and still remember the episode where the eldest boy asked his mother, Kathy Bates, if their family had “too much drama”. Then he listed a series of over the top high points of many episodes, like said hand. She had her back to him and cringed, and calmly said “well, every family has its problems.” It was hysterical dry humor with perfect timing. Loved the cringe.
