Rock Hudson used to have pool parties for young, attractive men
They were rumored about but nobody was publishing photos, etc. Was it PR who kept the photos away from sight?
But what about the same thing happening today. How are all these young Hollywood gays meeting and hooking up at parties- and you know they happen- and there are never any photos leaked online. Do they have a "check your phone at the door policy" (which would seem impossible to enforce as everybody is always texting, etc.) Or do they have people sign paperwork (which would kind of kill any fun party buzz.)
Just amazing that one of the only outings that happened like that was Chad Allen and that was 20 years ago.

I thought it was George Cukor who had the famous pool parties. Of course in those days before cell-phones and the internet, you had to be in with the in crowd to get invited, and be discreet.

I'd like to see the OP try to hide a 1950s "small" camera in his bathing suit!
And I don't know how worried Hudson was about being outed. He was privately out to some degree, wasn't he? And he paid people to make sure nothing about his real private life was ever published, and they earned their money.

yeah, i find it hard today in 2015 or heck since 2000 that all these hollywood pool parties exist all the time but there is NEVER EVER any proof?....
cell phones confiscated at the door, so called papers signed (would a party of a bunch of people 50,100,200 really stop at the door creating a line signing papers before they get in at some house?) and so on....
i can understand the whole gated private property mansion thing, but what about the hired guards? bartenders, anyone hired wouldn't they have stories to tell and yes, cell phones or whatever they could have on them?
what about i don't know a hidden cell phone in someone's shoes? what about high lens powerful cameras that can zoom and take photos from a hundreds yards away? stuff like that?... unless these parties are very private and spur of the moment, i would think the paps could find out all the time?!..

Was friends with an older man in Sedona AZ, who said he was a contract player at one of the the majors, which I presumed was Universal, since he added he'd had a 6-months affair with John Hodiak. When I asked him about Cukor's pool parties, he pointed out that no one who had any ambitions could afford to be seen at them, because word about them would be all over town by the next day, and their career would be over.
That was in the late 40's.

r50 It still happens. A few years ago I was dating an attorney from New Orleans with A-List friends, and we attended a gay swim party while I was ther. A well-known actor from Hollywood, who was part of their little group, and in town for the week, was invited. He told the host he give his right arm to come, but he couldn't risk being seen or having his picture taken at the party. I thought by the time he's not so famous, the fun will be over. I guess that's the price they pay for their careers. Said though it's still happening in the 21st century.

Given that homosexuality was a hard labor criminal offense back then and would destroy any career instantly if the public found out, the Hollywood bunch had to keep it secret. There were a few gossip rags that would publish gay rumors, unless the studios or actors paid them not to. So, the only pictures taken would have been staged ones. Many years ago, there was one small gay bar in my town. You had to know where it was and be known to get in there. One night a patron decided to bring in one of those huge old cameras with the huge flash. He didn't get to take any pictures and was lucky to get out of there alive. That's life in the shadows.

Everyone with a pool, some money/fame/influence/studio affiliation throws parties. It has been going on long before Rock (See James Whale) and will go on long after you and I are gone. I knew a guy who attended Rock's pool parties back in the day. To look at it from a distance, it was just a sunny day in Bev Hills with kids frolicking in the pool. When you wandered into the house, though, you might find yourself in a smoky room where deals with the devil were being made. Procurers (those who knew the stars and curried favor with them) knew by sight who would willingly go to so and so's party, and who would be willing to go but wouldn't be willing to put out for career purposes. The latter group didn't get to go. But they kept their dignity.

These type of parties rely on the feel of exclusiveness like entering a VIP section. Once you like it you will be more willing to obey the rules (don't tell outsiders what's going on around here or you will go back being an outsider!). But it also creates this foul stench of paranoia and witchhunts where ambitious social climbers accuse each other of breaking the rules in order to gain favor with the "Queen Bee" or "Leader of the Pack".
There is a very "Mean Girls" inner circle vibe at these events where people fight each other to "sit at the cool kids' table" and in a lot of cases the "cool kids" enjoy the fights over them.
Why don't disgruntled jealous queens share more about what's going on at these parties? Like closeted stars who had a big career once hope to make a comeback again, these disgruntled jealous queens hope to get back into the inner circle one day and fear that might not happen when their blabbling gets traced back to them.

No cell phones or social media. Newspapers would not publish such pictures back then...because they would get in trouble with TPTB at the studio. Also people were allowed to have a private life so secrets would be kept for celebrities unless some public scandal made that impossible.

It's strange that some people are so surprised by the thought of gay, same-sex naked pool parties in Hollywood's past. It was a small community and the gay community was even smaller. It was impossible to date or be seen in public together, especially if someone's sexuality was whispered about, so they would meet in private homes or other places hidden from public view. As much as a lot of old gossip has surfaced, you know there's plenty more which hasn't. (And probably never will, given such things as Rodney McDowell's diaries being locked away.) Also surprising, is how people don't think parties such as these still don't happen today among certain circles. Despite homosexuality being more accepted, there are still plenty of men who are closeted and don't want their sexuality to be made public.

Guys, including celebrities, put their sex partners in danger (by not disclosing their HIV, or other STDs, status) back then as they do now. Things haven't changed in that regard. What has changed is Hollywood giving this fake impression that it's a lot gay friendlier as it is.

Coming out was not really an option for Liberace. He had successfully sued a London newspaper for libel in the 1950s when its cultural critic wrote a scathing review in which he implied that Liberace was a homosexual. Liberace denied being homosexual in a court of law. The paper could have sued him to restore the settlement awarded him plus damages had he ever admitted perjuring himself in the libel case.

R87 You have to realize that we knew very little about the disease in the mid eighties. Rock didn't give his boyfriend AIDS. People forget that Marc sued the estate because Rock MAY have exposed him and this caused him emotional distress. Truth be told, it was a money grab because he wasn't in the will and he was pissed! Marc tested negative and was clean the rest of his life. Also Rock died very soon after he found out he had AIDS and he DID publicly reveal his condition.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | August 18, 2019 9:13 PM

R87 also in 1984 it was believed that you got AIDS from kissing or being sneezed on/near someone infected. So, when Marc said he was "exposed to the disease" his lawyers argued that it included proximity exposure not just anal. Which was a valid argument at the time. Also testing was really sketchy. False negatives were common as were false positives. The technology wasn't there. Plus Rock's doctors first thought he had cancer so they weren't looking in the right place to determine why he was getting so sick. It happened alot in those days.
I'll shut up now.
